- Sequence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6For your information, if you plug your macbook to an external screen with an external keyboard / mouse, you'll be able to close the lid and it won't sleep. This is called clamshell mode. Granted, you need a hack to make this work with the iBook. But for the macbook and macbook pro, it is an advertised feature.
- kaidovak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've looked for something like this for ages! This will be perfect for using my powerbook as a portable MP3 player. (since my ipod got stolen)
- compguy11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just got a MacBook Pro after switching from Windows, and this was the one thing that bothered me...I understand the reasoning of design, but my laptop is mostly used on a desk, and rarely would ever be running inside a bag or something, so I think I'm okay with the heat thing, but thanks for the comments..they were helpful.
- TeqnoHaxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember a few years ago on the screensavers, someone wrote in with a PowerBook asking how to prevent it from sleeping when shut. Kevin Rose pointed to a little app which solved the problem however that app has since been discontinued and was never ported to work with Intel Macs.
So, finally. Been looking for this for a long time, and it's a universal binary! Hooray. - definbaker, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1While handbrake was doing and encode it interrupted the sleep when I closed my lid and it ran for 4 hours and it wasn't any hotter than it normally would be. I think this would only be a problem if left on an intense task for a long time.
- walkingalone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just what i was looking for!
- Sequence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've seen more portable than a powerbook ;) Especially when we're talking of MP3 players.
- mattyohe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Uh yeah, that "missing feature" is "by design" so it doesn't overheat. Macbooks are built to raidiate heat through the keyboard and if you have it powered on while closed this prevents heat from escaping. There have been confirmations of this heat up with the recent release of 10.4.7... in some cases, the macbook failed to go into sleep mode. The user found the laptop later extremely hot to the touch: :"The computer was so hot I was barely able to ouch it to do a forced restart". -- http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/safetyissues/topic4346.html
