man, these Apples that cost more then a PC - spray their toxic coolant over the place and blow up their batteries, spraying hot acid all over the god dam place.
Apple fan boys will digg me down for sure, but answer me this: When was the last time a PC sprayed hot burning acid all over my gentials? NEVER
But seems to happen all the time with my apple books! Now I got to worry about getting cooliant in my eyes and all over my naked exposed skin!
"Hi I'm a PC"
"Hi I'm a Mac"
"What do you have there Mac?"
"A flask full of hot burning acid"
"What you going to do with it?"
"Splash it all over your gentials of course!"
[cue stupid music] - notorious., on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Talk about irony.
- moosepile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Gotta love "equivalent tier machine replacement" as opposed to how car insurers do it.
We had a division many years ago get wiped out of a bunch of real crap: UMAX Supermax clones, Performa 6100s, some beige G3s. Insurance provided equivalent "desktop model" technology. Shiny new G4s... - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12OS X just uses Apache, whats your point? Apache handles the biggest sites in the world. OS X is every bit as stable as a plain BSD/Linux installation if all it's doing is serving up web pages. Your troll attempt fails in all regards.
- MacJazarus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Not really ***** they are a corporate entity and as such must be dealt with in such a manner and not personally. Imho MacDave did the appropriate steps to get the result that he got and I'm sure he would have kept receipts for 1GB sticks of RAM - I know I would
It's only smart on Apple's part and probably stems from experience "hey lets stick these dead 1GB ram sticks in this dead mac :D" some abusers would have thought -
and apple would have had to replace them if they didnt have that policy in place, those sticks cost quite a bit. - mattsfolio, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17damn

um, car batteries have battery acid in them. Li-Ion batteries do not. Not all batteries are the same, that's why they conveniently give them different names. Not only are you a troll, you're a ***** idiot - Shananra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11That's a Tanuki

A two year old liquid cooled computer springs a leak. Bad but lets face it, two is a bout 40 in computer years; ***** breaks down. Not only is the problem not a big deal but then they turn around and replace a two year-old computer with a brand new Mac Pro. They could have given him an equivalent refurbed G5.
Yeah, what a bunch of *****, how dare they. - spiffyfitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That's a big freaking PSU.
- ricepudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is there a button to eject the CPU core should such a situation occur?

I'll leave the dumb questions to you. Not to mention stupid ideas like cracking open a battery.

And I'm a Mac guy.....Digg me down...... ;) - anonyrodent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've personally worked on at least 5 machines that have much worse damage than the pictures linked to in the story. Often the logic board, power supply, power supply cover and whole enclosure must be replaced. Its a friggen mess. That being said I still am a fan of Apple. Unfortunatelly the companies (Delphi etc...) they contracted the coolent system out to didn't create the most robust designs.

July 2004? (after waiting so long for the vapourware DP3GHz if anyone remembers...), waited weeks for delivery only to get an email saying 'demand had been high' and they they had to put the delivery back another month. I cancelled the order and went and bought a DP2.0 off the shelf.
I am very glad I did that now. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Single source. And take a bath.
- cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5It's a joke, people. He was making a funny. I laughed. I didn't get all Fanboi-defensive like you turds. If you can't laugh at that, there's something wrong with you.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My system sprang a leak, but luckily all that happened was some USB and VGA cables got soaked. one i dried everything off and replaced a DVI->VGA connector that seemed a bit dull from all the water drying on it, the system was fine. The cause? ants ate holes through the plastic water reservoir. I'm guessing they could detect the additives to the coolant that are kind of sweet smelling.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That wikipedia article is somewhat lacking. This site is much better: http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/tanuki.shtml
They often have large balls, carrying booze in one hand and forged slips on the other.
This is also because Tanuki's are the Japanese god of restaurateurs and booze. They are also known tricksters but not as devious or skillful as the Nine Tailed Fox.
As a result they are commonly seen in Asian games or Manga using a leaf over their head to help facilitate transformation, no doubt to fool someone. - triska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@blackcow:

- macdaveus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hi, I'm MacDave, the guy who started the thread on MacTalk about the coolant leak in my G5 DP 2.7. Judging by responses here on Digg, it appears many didn't read the thread thoroughly nor look at links I posted about other incidences of G5 coolant leaks in the three liquid cooled models.
This coolant leakage is not such a frequent issue that one should be "scared" nor fear that their liquid cooled Mac will just someday blow up. However, it is an issue that people should be aware of and IMHO, it's a good lesson in the reasons why one should spend a bit extra for AppleCare, not just for potentially problematic models of Macs, but for any model. Even if one doesn't intend on keeping their Mac over a year, having AppleCare makes it much easier to sell them.
I did use the G5 quite heavily and it was pretty much running 24/7 for it's lifetime. However, it was not abused in any way and it's the first of many Macs I've owned that ever had a serious issue necessitating taking it in for service. Those Macs include a Graphite G4 tower, several Quicksilver G4s, an MDD G4, a Cube G4, and two Xserves among a few other machines over the last 5 years.
There were some small signs a day or two before the final meltdown: The second processor was running about 8° C cooler than normal relative to the termperature of the first processor. The fans were spinning up audibly more often than usual, especially when launching apps and the machine just had a funny "feel" to it. However, I had also just recently installed a large security update, was running on my original install of Tiger dating back to the day I bought the G5 and its OS was not in the best of shape. But, everything did continue to work until that last reboot which chimed, fired up the HDs, spun the fans, yet resulted in both monitors being pitch black and their power lights not coming on. I held the power button down for five seconds, waited another ten seconds or so and cold booted with the same results. At that time, I noticed red status LEDs through the G5's grill and knew there was something -very- wrong. I again held the power button down for five seconds, shut the G5 down and decided to unplug it, wait an hour and try again in a last ditch attempt that it might bring it back to life (not that I really expected it to.) However, when I plugged it back in, the power indicating light on the power button came instantly on without pressing it. Holding it down would not turn it off, there were no audible or visual signs of any life in the G5 and I just unplugged it again and took it in for service.
In essence, in my first submission in the MacTalk thread, I just strongly suggested that owners of liquid cooled G5s be aware of this -potential- coolant leakage issue and supplied links to incidences of it occuring. How many more liquid cooled G5s will suffer this same issue is something only time will tell. The main reason I said 18-24 months was based on a mate's G5 DP 2.5 totally failing a couple of months before mine did. He also bought his G5 a couple of months before I bought mine. And it was based on the links I had posted in the MacTalk thread in my first submission.
My story did have a very happy ending though and on the whole, my experience dealing with AppleCare workers, Apple Product Specialists, and Apple Customer Relations people was a good one. Sure, it was a bit of a hassle. It always is when things go unexpectedly wrong. On the other hand, I now have a lovely new Mac Pro 8-core on my desk with an ample supply of RAM in it. =)
Dave - Currawong2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Something else worth noting, I believe that the coolant is alcohol based.
- triska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He did, that's why Apple gave him a quad core Mac Pro as a replacement, specced up to the level of the original machine with regards to RAM. He chose to upgrade to an 8 core Mac pro for an extra $800.
