- muffinmanpoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51How is this a "podcast"? It's just a recording.
Pretty cool, nonetheless. - cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24I have this cassette tape somewhere. I recorded it off vinyl years ago. That's how we used to pirate..heh
- aussieNickuss, on 10/12/2007, -19/+42This post is another example of what is annoying me about Digg. I know this is an American site, made and run by Americans. BUT....it is read and used by the world. I wish the posts on Digg refferring to the US would not be like "the nation", "our nation", "our government" etc. etc. For example...the title of this article should be "Podcast of the Orson Welles Broadcast that Terrified the United States in 1938".

- SurrealDream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Wow, I've always wanted to listen to this, good find.

"The live broadcast frightened many listeners into believing that an actual Martian invasion was in progress. Although it is sometimes stated that there were many disclaimers pointing out the functionality of the invasion, there was only one disclaimer at the start of the broadcast, and then two close together near the end, leaving ample time in the middle for confusion and fright on the part of listeners."

- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hah! That is great! The Simpsons did a great job of recreating his voice in Halloween Special XVII. I think I read somewhere it was Maurice La March, the voice of "Brain" from Pinky and the Brain who did the impersonation.
"The devastation is incredible! They're grinding up the bodies of human beings! Now they're riding horses in the rain! Now they're playing the xylophone while bowling near an airport!" - theOster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"my advice to you? 'learn to live with it'"
- darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11You have to cut the article's poster a little bit of slack due to the fact that it is fairly typical where ever you go for people to refer to their own nation as "the nation" or similar. Most people don't really adapt to an international style of writing unless they have a reason to.

I'm kidding. I kid. I joke. I do that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9that's creepy he knew about pod cast back then
- kosibar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10H. G. Wells != Orson Welles

*vaudeville piano* - hoofdpijn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dude...stop trying to be reasonable...you're killing my "Americans are stupid and gullible" buzz.
- z0l0pht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@kosibar: H.G. wrote it, Orson performed it.
- cptn_cardboard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5we cant call it "Podcast of the Orson Welles Broadcast that Terrified the United States in 1938," it makes it look like America gets scared at the slightest little...
...nvm - hoofdpijn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm totally with ya.
I was on the Holden website building out a Commodore the other day and was totally confused on the pricing because nowhere on the site did it say that the listed price was in Australian dollars. I couldn't even find the little US flag icon on the site anywhere to translate it all to American for me. Thoughtless bastards. Oz != the world - idigital, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That's conspiracy theory *****, the Princeton Radio Project did a study into it *after* the broadcast. See wikipedia if necessary, not some conspiracy ***** website.
- spd998, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is really strange I have just been learning about American history at school and learned about his yesterday, what a coincidence. Thanks for the awesome website link.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've had this on my ipod for a while. Wherever I found it had it split into 'chapters'. Anyways, here's a direct link:

good find...
respect - hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this is the best guide to the internet ive found so far - its a project by 3 highschoolers
i think its a gem
from the netiquette section...
"DON'T tell someone that they are "unAmerican". Remember, the Internet is World-Wide. If you say that to someone from Italy, odds are they won't be offended. However, they probably don't care about a lecture on the First Amendment and American values either."
"DON'T SEND A MESSAGE IN ALL CAPS. CAPITALIZED MESSAGES ARE HARDER TO READ THAN LOWER CASE OR MIXED CASE."
"DO remember the immortal words of Martin Farquhar Tupper (1810-1889): "Well-timed silence hath more eloquence than speech."
and
"Netiquette is often forgotten, overlooked, or not known to many user, particulary new users (or 'newbies'). However, violation of these guidelines is considered a serious breach and can cause you to be flamed or spammmed. It is frequently forgotten, when using e-mail and other network tools, that there are real people on the other end of our electronic corresponsdence. Most of us would never dream of insulting someone on the telephone or writing a letter while we are angry. So, why do it on the Net? If the proper rules of Netiquette are followed, then your trip on this Information Superhighway will be a lot smoother."
http://library.thinkquest.org/10361/data.htm - idigital, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@datsclark: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Project
"The Radio Project also researched the 1938 Halloween broadcast of The War of the Worlds. They found that of the estimated 6 million people who heard this broadcast, 25% thought it was real. Most of the people who panicked did not think that it was an invasion from Mars that was occurring, but rather one by the Germans."
Oh, maybe Orson Welles got 1.5 million of his friends to pretend they thought it was real. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what do you mean "even though it takes place in england"
the original book was set in england - klepto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In case the original site goes down:
http://www.zshare.net/audio/2006-10-27t11_37_30-07_00-mp3.html - rrasco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@idigital & foxymcfoxy....
you live in 2007, not 1938. the world was a very different place then for all the reasons doctorsax already pointed out. good scenario too, if the radio came on saying terrorists are detonating nukes all over country and the Chinese have began an invasion in California, you wouldn't think about it for a minute....
in a time where the internet and tv was unconceivable, cell phones(and land lines for the most part) non existent, you have no other place to check, except the radio which was telling you there was an invasion done in the style of a news report....what do you believe. would you rather kill yourself or be suspended in a liquefied electric restraining system while aliens probe you for last nights lean cuisine? - americajones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is revisionist to suggest that the radioplay was an allegory about the rise of Fascism and impending global war, and that public anxieties "in the air" over this prospect contributed to the ensuing panic? The panic, perhaps, being a mass catharsis?
- robertgoodwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good find... but, ummm... why was this submitted under News >> Technology >> Apple? How the hell does this have anything to do with Apple tech? It's a simple mp3. Perhaps it should have been filed under Entertainment?
- mindlessxd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.mercurytheatre.info/mercury.torrent -- torrent for a number of old radio broadcasts including War of the Worlds
(also http://www.mercurytheatre.info/ if you absolutely abhor torrents) - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why don't people just say 'mp3' instead of pod cast?... i mean is a fashion statement?... sorta like va`s or vase?
Anyway... the mp3... oh I mean pod cast... has been out for years.... - KoderOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Album is really great, it is also a classical record to sample from, you can hear samples from it everywhere.
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can put them on any mp3 player, not just ipods
- rogermoore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Love the Orson Welles, used to listen to this when I was a kid, and Jeff Wayne's musical version of War of the Worlds, which has just been touring with a live band.
- MuZiKMafia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A couple of years ago, I was looking for a torrent for this and found "Jeff Wayne's Musical War of the Worlds". Even though it takes place in Britain (does that make you all happy?), the plot is basically the same, and the story is integrated into a long opera-style album... I highly recommend you torrent it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Wayne%27s_Musical_Version_of_The_War_Of_The_Worlds - xstevenx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey i created an ipod friendly version of the orginal broadcast MP3 link
-adds it to yur audiobooks section in itunes
-makes it bookmarkable
-includes album art in the file (if i did it wrong u can just pull it from my site)
theres the link
http://salinashardcore.blogspot.com/2007/02/orson-welles-war-of-worlds-1938.html - MuZiKMafia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article is referring to the radio version, which takes place in the U.S. I made this comment to contrast where Jeff Wayne's version and the radio broadcast take place....
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is public domain, so you can actually find this lots of places.
- nettleman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 This is a podcast?
i thought it was just an old fashioned .mp3 file
Do I need to get an iPod to listen to this? - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you dont need an ipod to listen to a podcast. and most podcast are just old fashion.mp3
- marso, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I notice the original link to Orson's audio is inactive. Here's the new link (opened due to popular demand): http://www.oculture.com/2007/07/the_war_of_the_worlds_on_podcast_how_hg_wells_and_orson_welles_riveted_a_nation.html
- HegemonBill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really wish that event could happen again in history. But now no one trusts the news.
There are too many people in the world
