- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -1/+78How could you guys not have seen this?? This is a geek classic!!!
On second note, I feel sorry for those who have to watch it on youtube. At least have the decency to rent the DVD. (I remember when it hit the front page that the DVD was out...that was a long time ago ;-). - Brightside, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45For anyone who doesn't know, the guy who plays Ballmer does the voice acting for Bender from Futurama.
- marvinmatthew, on 10/12/2007, -5/+48Does anybody remember the MacWord where Noah Wyle (the actor who played Steve Jobs in Pirates of The Silicon Valley) came on stage imatating Steve Jobs? It was one of the more memerable MacWorld keynotes...

One of my favorite movies. Seen it too many times. That era is fascinating - joshcook83, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32i got this from netflix a few months ago with high expectations. i got dugg-down for for saying this a couple of months back, but, while there's some good material here, i was largely disappointed. if you haven't seen it, however, its worth a watch.
- bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Don't bother with the broken-up youtube version, use google video instead:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7941901498664355924&q=pirates+of+silicon+valley+duration%3Along - SjRaptor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I thought he was an ***** after watching the movie. He was selfish and only cared about himself and his own ideas. That's what I got out of watching it. Wozniak is a much better person imo.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Stop saying that Gates stole DOS or Apple stole PARC. Neither is true. The company that sold all their rights to MS for DOS were idiots. As was IBM for being short-sighted about it's potential by giving away the licensing rights to MS. Xerox had zero plans for PARC and for a nominal fee basically gave away the rights to that as well. So Gates and MS and Jobs and Apple made a killing off other people's ideas. So what? This happens everyday. So, you can tilt at windmills Donny my boy, or get used to the fact that in almost every business deal, someone gets screwed.
Koder, MS NEVER sold DOS to IBM. That was the point. IBM screwed up by letting MS license it to them thereby assuring that IBM would never be able to make serious headway into the OS market. IBM thought they were getting a great deal since they didn't have to give much money to MS. Who came out on top? - GrayOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Steve: Our stuff is better than yours!
Bill:You don't get it Steve. That doesn't matter.
Best line in the movie. - UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I will digg you up for honesty good sir.
- hexydes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If you guys like this movie (as I did), check out "Triumph of the Nerds" as well. It is much longer and more accurate. I believe it is based on the book "Accidental Empires" by Robert X. Cringley.
Additionally, if you have not read "Fire in the Valley", which "Pirates" is based on, do so. It is a fantastic read, and even though it is a very long book, it is broken up into very manageable pieces, and by the end of the book, you will be wishing that it went even more in-depth (to which I would say, check out books such as "Dealers of Lightning" and "Bootstrapping", all of which I have read and find very interesting). - theonewho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Another great geek documentary is Revolution OS.

One of my personal favorites :) - cwalk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This is a great movie, but I don't think it only applies to Geeks since it taught me all I needed to know about making a business successful: Copy someone else's product, tweak it a little, and sell it cheaper/quicker than them.
- Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The biggest omission from the movie: the impact of Commodore computer. Like it or not, Commodore bringing home the first reasonably priced home computer set both Apple and IBM spinning in circles. And a few years later, the Amiga was considered the most advanced computer of it's time even beating Apple for graphic programs. Hell, Bill Gates even WROTE Commodore Basic! Yet funny though how none of that is mentioned in this movie, and they make it look like it's always just been a race between Apple and IBM.
Yes Commodore was in it for the money, and they are gone and buried now, but let's not rewrite history by forgetting there was a THIRD major player at the time. - DDoSAttack, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13@Dannychico
Just because it is "illegal" today doesn't mean it will be tomorrow. Not all laws are good laws. Remember not to long ago it was illegal for women and black people to vote. It was also illegal to create, posses and/or consume alcohol. Oh and being accused of being a "witch" was an offense that required burning at the stake... just to make sure that you were not in fact a witch.
If we as a community have anything to say about it, media such as this won't be "illegal" to watch on sites such as YouTube for long ;) - rcran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Noah Wylde impersonates Steve Jobs at keynote:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_KRO5Hxv_No - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The movie had my undivided attention the whole way through, it was fascinating stuff to think that this movie is largely based of a true story. I wasn't disappointed, I was expecting it to be boring and long winded (its a movie about computers and business, not ninjas and spaceships), but was happy to see that it was actually quite entertaining.
- KoderOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Copy someone else's product, tweak it a little, and sell it (...)"
Do you mean the part where they sell DOS to IBM or where Steve visits Xerox PARC? - valkyries, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7the google video version is prob better quality
- sancho320, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I saw this when it first came out, great flick. Woz said he liked it too, and that its pretty accurate to boot.
- kyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ADD don't you know?
- tony134340, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you like this one, you would probably like Triumph of the Nerds 3 part series too. Can't find it on YouTube or Google vids but here's the torrent: http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/822441/PBS_Triumph_of_the_Nerds_1of3_DVDRip_XviD_AC3 . It's a documentary that covers most of what PSV covers with interviews from Bill Gates, Woz, and Steve Jobs.
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is not only a geek classic, but a good eye opener for those remotely interested in computers who don't realize the wild rollercoaster of Apple and Jobs and their tight relationship with Microsoft.
- flipmeat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ideas are not copyrightable or patentable, oddly enough. The law gives protection only for 'the expression of an idea', or the implementation.
Apple sees the Xerox Alto. Apple spends millions creating their own concept of a windowed interface from scratch. They also PAID Xerox a modest fee to cover themselves. Apple risks more millions making and selling the Mac. Profit! (sorry, couldn't resist) If you sit an Alto and an old Mac together, you'd see some general similarity, but lots of little differences. That's OK. More importantly, it'll hold up in court. Two distinct expressions of similar ideas...
What's criminal is actual literal copying of source code, like Microsoft did to Apple a couple of times. What's described above is just capitalism at it's finest. There's very little truly new in the world.
Now, if you want to read about stealing, study art history! - fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I like this movie so much that I even bought it.
Take that MPAA - fastsix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I pity the fool.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3CraigCarlyle, its John Dimaggio (aka Bender), hes also done voices in Gear of War :)
- kyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@cwalk: don't forget to take advantage of a slower dumber bigger corporation (i.e. IBM at the time). Poor IBM didn't see it coming. Of course, they were pretty hampered by the results of their own antitrust lawsuit at the time.
- ArcticCelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you can, after watching this, try to find the series from Bob Cringely named triumph of the nerds and nerds 2.0 Its amazing how the actors got it right when imitating Steve Jobs and Steve Ballmer. To really see what I mean you need to find clips of them in their 30s. The Woz and Gates are also ok.
- flipmeat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3'On the Edge', by Brian Bagnall, is a terrific book about Commodore. Highly recommended.
- Lutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's just insanely funny, love a company with humor!
- larsenm5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just reading through some of these comments I thought I would just point out the obvious: its not a documentary. Quite a nice "cute" little film I thought though, and well put together, but it is fiction in the end of the day (even though it is based on fact). I did like it though, especially the humour :-). I'd also hate to see how Bill Gates would have sex
- rbond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Triumph of the nerds is available on Youtube. Someone didn't call it Triumph of the Nerds. Instead it is labeled as Rise of Silicon Valley. I ironically found this when searching for Pirates of Silicon Valley.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xS48BkBl1o - pmantis205, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anti-Trust is without a doubt the worst geek movie ever.
- manatee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3one of my favorite if not favorite movies of all time!
- theonewho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Dammit, coughed when clicking submit so double posted. Digg down.
- CraigCarlyle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That guy playing Steve Ballmer is exactly the kind of guy you'd think Steve is off stage.
- exoendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"For anyone who doesn't know, the guy who plays Ballmer does the voice acting for Bender from Futurama."
and wakka from FFX. - MrRuslan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3545139/The_Pirates_Of_Silicon_Valley
- mikesum32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's got some pretty good music for a made for tv movie.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cool that they made a movie about this, but totally inaccurate. Read iWoz if you want a better picture
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Plus it was a TV network movie, not a theatrical release. Not much different than recording an old TV show.
- Ghostal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, it really is great. I saw it about 8 years ago (geez, has it been 8 years?) on TNT. The performances are exceptional. "Fire in the Valley", the book it was based on, is also a good read.
- pentomino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I imagine they had to cut it for simplicity, but I'd love to see a movie about the 8-bit computers that thrived in the shadows of IBM and Apple. I don't think there's a wide enough market for such a movie, but I for one would be glued to my seat.
- Overdose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember in my graphics communications class, we watched this everyday we had a substitute. x_x
Its a pretty good movie. - rmmatt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good movie. It doesn't always paint them in a good light, but it does make you appreciate how these guys both started their companies from nothing. The "big brother" moment of Gates appearing on the big screen still makes me smile.
- syco123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But it will matter.
As more people learn about alternatives to Windows, and other MS products, and as those alternatives improve, it'll matter more and more. - trfcrugby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I teach HS computer networking and a graphics class, and I make my students watch this film. I think it's a great part of the history of the computer world that a lot of people have no idea about.
Throughout the year, I show PSV, Triumph of the Nerds, Nerds 2.0, Tron, and The Video Game Invasion. All great films, and they tie in to my course pretty well.
Week one, while we are still doing adds and drops to the class, we watch Triumph of the Nerds. Halfway through the year when we are into the networking/Internet/router portion of the class, its Nerds 2.0.
For my animation/graphics class, it's Video Game Invasion the first week, then Tron halfway through the year when we get into 3D modeling and animation.
The sad thing is how many of the kids in the class can give a rats ass about any of the films, even the one about video games. - prodigy311, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You must have really great bandwidth.
