- mini_moose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love it, peecee users have been pooping on the powerbooks for the past year because the screen resolution was too low for such a pro-orientated laptop. So, now they increase the resolution and everybody complains that now they have to squint to see the thing. It just goes to show that apple can't please any peecee fanboy with anything they do. How about the fact that the 17" is aimed at HD video editors and that you can run a 30" display as well as the 17"? For those that it's aimed at it seems pretty good to me.
Yeah, they didn't upgrade much beyond that, but I'm sure you've heard about this big Intel transition thing they're going to be heading up in a few months. If they added a bunch of new features this time around with the intel models right around the corner I'm sure the complaints would be "what are they doing? if you buy this model before the Intel version you're going to have the old processor. Why is apple doing this? Apple is dumb, not like my PC." For most the 17" is overkill, but for those that it's aimed at it's a good fit.
I can't wait to see the complaints when the new Intel Powerbooks come out. They'll probably be ahead of their time in regards to features and technology, but the fanboys will find something to complain about. The hating continues. Viva la M$! - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK... so they have a widescreen monitor, but why didn't they expand the keyboard layout? The one thing I hate about laptops is the funky keyboard.
- Shinnokxz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple should ship that monstrosity with a pair of binoculars so you can find your away about to the program to run movies at that ridiculous resolution.
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so its just a higher resolution?
that's nice, i guess...better throw out the ones you all bought last month, they are really trying to stretch out the technology they have laying around.
those specs were very nice 2 years ago and having that high of a resolution on a computer monitor that size just doesn't make since to me.
/drunk digg comments bitches! what!?! - jhammar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use 1920x1200 on my 15.4". Whatever your opinion on high res small screens, it's kind of sad that they are trying to make this seem like some amazing new feature. Kind of like just now adding PCI express to a desktop...oh wait.
- suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who cares, ill be interested when the mactel machines come out.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why do people still refer to Windows users as "PC" users? Your Macintosh isn't a Personal Computer?"
The PC industry never really viewed Mac users as PC users. They coined the term to strictly mean WinTel users. And it started to catch on. An exampel of this is is when Dell tried to claim that they where the first computer company to popularize Wifi.
When in realty, Apple was the first. When Dell was asked about why they make such a claim he said "That Apple was the first to do this on the Mac and we where the first to do this for the PC" : He's a ***** idiot. - jcpiercy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just bought a 12 inch PB G4 in April ,, new switcher
I love the look of the new 15 inch PB's ,
Im lovin the Apple experience
+digg - PowerLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, the keyboard on powerbooks are full sized. They're not all scrunched up like normal laptop keyboards. I want a new screen. =( But I won't get a new one till the mactel machines start rollin out.
- sublime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ive got a IBM 15 inch 1400x1050. Its not that hard to read and I'd expect much more out of a 17 inch.
- Friedle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone want to trade one for my TiBook?
Damn, they sexy. - Polymira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i use 1680x1050 on my 15.4, it's perfect ...
- sleight42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys, really, this is simple.
More pixels inside the same area (width * height, folks--basic algebra) = more dots per inch. More dots per inch means the same resolution image on a higher resolution screen given the same size will look smaller! - Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That thing looks like a throw back to the 70's.
Ton of wasted space below the keyboard.
No way that I'd use that resolution on a 17" monitor. - Smiles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Look at the pictures. All the various elements on the two screens are the same size - higher resolution just allows for a crisper image."
commandar! - that's completely false. While OS X may scale nicely with a higher DPI (and therefore show the same thing, but more detailed), the side-by-side photos clearly show that the web pages being viewed have more information on them. The images are smaller, the text is smaller. Look more closely next time instead of making assumptions. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is with the increasing number of pictures of Apples new stuff? Theres atleast 3 or 4 on the digg-live-bookmark just now..
Meeh
- Ben - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"but why didn't they expand the keyboard layout?"
Agreed. It's the only reason why I didn't get a powerbook this summer. - DemiGuru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How many of you really own a PowerBook? As one owns one (15"), as a matter of fact I'm using it to type this comment. I can tell you that the keyboard is very easy to use unlike quite a few laptops it's a full size. As for the so called wasted space. Have you tried typing while your laptop is on your lap?? It's a perfect place to rest your hands while you type.
- optimusfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My current 15" keyboard is excellent. I dont see any reason to change it or add other silly keys. I type on it over 8 hours a day. In any case, ours light up, and yours dont. ;-)
- commandar!, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For all you "You just have to squint more" comments, you've not used OS X on a high DPI screen. X scales beautifully to higher resolutions. Just because Windows (and even Linux right now) have brain dead handling of scaling to higher resolutions doesn't mean every OS does.
Look at the pictures. All the various elements on the two screens are the same size - higher resolution just allows for a crisper image. - TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ commandar!: I'm running 1920x1200 on a 15.4" screen right now, and Linux looks great.
Somehow, 1680x1050 on a 17" display fails to impress me when mid-range laptops from mainstream manufacturers offer WUXGA at 15.4". - jermm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only one problem with my 15in tiBook's keyboard, the keys get too hot when playing games!
- NoOnEx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My 17" Sony Vaio A-Series does 1920x1200. Its amazing and nearly impossible to go back to something smaller.
- gunbuster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get the big deal. Increasing resolution without expanding the display just means you squint more. This is sexy? I'm happy with the 15" Powerbook that I have. I also don't feel so bad about all the unused space around the keyboard.
- Leonhard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't windows ffs. Things don't get smaller when the resolution gets higher, they just get more detailed. The whole 20x20pixel and nothing else idiocy is strictly M$
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'll take my HP Pavilion that I'm on right now over that."
I don't think that's ever been uttered in the history of computing. Congrats on being the first... and oh, yea,
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaa..........
The person that would choose an HP over a PowarBook has got to be either insane or a troll. I think you're a little bit of both. :)+P+D - Shinnokxz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good to see we're going to need electron microscopes in order to see what the hell we're even doing on our computers soon enough.
- catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what amazes me about apple (or, conversely, befuddles me about PC makers), is that in the PC world, when laptop screens get bigger, the laptop itself gets thicker. try to find any 17" windows notebook that is a *slim* computer. on the contrary, the apple machines get *thinner* as the size gets bigger, to the point that the 17" powerbook is comparable to an ultra-thin 1" notebook. thoughts?
- expotice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just got my high resolution 1680x1050 powerbook g4 and the display is stunning.
found an awesome wallpaper site at http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/resolutions.php?w=1680 to take full advantage of that tight screen - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What people are saying about higher-screen-res = harder to see is true, and what people saying it looking the same size on screen is (un-techialy) true as well..
There'll be more pixels-per-inch, but, Apple made their interface bigger, so it's the same size if you measure it with a ruler, but their just more detailed (Well, less pixely)
..well, thats what I assume.. I'm more than happy with my Vaio laptop, runs almost all video editing programs I need (Could do with 1GB in stead of 512mb ram, but thats about it)
- Ben - ciphex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ sleight42: exactly right.
You do gain screen space. this is a good thing. A laptop monitor sits decently close to your eyes so I cannot see how on earth it would strain normal eyes to view the high res. though of course you can always set it lower. If your eyes suck... get glasses.
I say it's about damn time. After Apple finishes bringing its laptop hardware up to par and puts an intel chip in it then I will be picking one up for myself. Until then... I love my iBook for portable coding and picking up chicks.
NEXT TO DO: dissapate HD heat already you engineering geniuses! - stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice. It also looks considerably brighter.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn that's nice. Hopefully I don't get too jealous when I go to the Apple Store today and see the new 15" PB's with the upgraded resolutions.
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do people still refer to Windows users as "PC" users? Your Macintosh isn't a Personal Computer?
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My dell inspiron 9100 laptop has a 1920x1200 resolution.... I love it. I do a lot of graphic work on it and web design. Its great to be able to see what i'm doing AND all the tools/panels for photoshop. Also...those high def sample videos (720p & 1080i) released by a few companies look amazing full screen! so just having 1680 x 1050 seems to me that they are trying to please everybody... things do appear small. But if I were a mac user id demand the nicer screen atleast as an option.
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ha, I don't think there's such a thing as "PC Fanboys". it's probably more accurate to say "Mac Haters". But there are "Mac Fanboys"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how is a about the real spects like processor you guys are dumb!
- 3Den, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On why this is a big deal.
In terms of technology.. it's not. Not at all. There's nothing super fancy about it. Nobdy is pretending this is some groundbreaking new thing.
The fact is, powerbook displays have been behind the times for a while, and there are, I'm guessing, a lot of people out there who really WANT to have a mac laptop, but held off on purchasing one because the powerbook displays seemed so dated. The screen was the only thing holding me off, to be sure. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BlueStar asks: "Why are PC users spamming this Apple thread. Nobody cares that you like you PC laptop. This is an Apple topic. So ***** off."
I'm seeing a lot of that as well. Interestingly it's always the same names that show up in almost Apple related story with their anti-Apple diatribes. It's a little frustrating but mostly it's just sad.
The truth is (at least as far as I'm concerned) is that the stronger Apple AND Microsoft AND the various Linux/UNIX distributors are, the better it is for all of us. - anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0""but why didn't they expand the keyboard layout?"
Agreed. It's the only reason why I didn't get a powerbook this summer."
just use an iFrog or similar product:
http://digg.com/hardware/iFrog,_QWERTY_keyboard_killer_ - raining_west, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow!!
- Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, it looks like a great machine to me, I wish I had a screen with that resolution, I run my PC w/ 17inch LCD at 1280x1024 and I still don't think thats small enough. :(
But tell me when they split that mouse click into two buttons, then i'll be interested. Till then, no sale with me. - starman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why they couldn't get to 1920x1200 is beyond me. No digg.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Ugly."
Well what do you consider beautiful? If you really take a good look at their products you'll see that they are highly refined, i'd say the bottom of the powerbook looks better than the top of most pc's - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"of course, most windows users wont understand that concept since they almost always run everything "maximized"... so 'higher resolution' to them is not about 'more space', its about everything being 'smaller'"
Typical ignorant mac fanboy comment. - kkapoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"How about the fact that the 17" (powerbook)is aimed at HD video editors"
If you honestly think that the Powerbook has the power to do HD video editing you are mistaken. Don't try and justify the increased screen resolution on the Powerbook for a purpose that it is not intended. The hi-res screen upgrade was made to provide value to a machine that cannot currently compete with other offerings on the market.
Apple would if they could produce more powerful machines. They simply cannot because their chip supplier can't provide the goods. That said the tables will turn with the introduction of the Intel Powerbooks. They will have an inherent advantage at being able to act as dual boot mahines. Why wouldn't you dual boot OSX and XP/Vista. (Of course all this depends on Apple being able to prevent OSX running on non-Apple hardware.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Apple. Using a mac now in fact. But the PowerBooks are such a rip.
- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Why are PC users spamming this Apple thread. Nobody cares that you like you PC laptop. This is an Apple topic. So ***** off."
Could you BE more pathetic? IT'S A DIGG STORY AND WE'RE ALL DIGG USERS. Grow up, infant. - mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ugly.
- chojin808, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0grapple the apple snapple!!!!!!!!!
