- MrMysterious, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Ok, now put it back together!
- Icecream, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21A BUNNY!
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+143.2GB?
I remember my 486's, and when I got that speedy Pentium MMX 133. With a whole gigabyte of storage!
Now you've made me feel old...and I'm only 22. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1622? Phhhshh. I remember the 8Mhz 68000 in my Mac Plus back in 1987. Now all ah you, get off my lawn!
- DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Meh, that's nothing. When I was in school we used a friggin abacus and wrote in cuneiform.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I'm sure he had you in mind when he did this.
- didoubleg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11the classic nano!
- irkenzim, on 10/10/2007, -2/+114-8 GB and a video screen? It's amazing to think how fast technology advances - my first computer wasn't that powerful (3.2GB) and that was less than a decade ago! (I know that's obvious by the way, but still :-) )
Anyway, I want one! - Grrreen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Yeesh... you guys are puppies... My first computer was this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS-80
The venerable TRS-80. 1.77Mhz and 4KB of RAM baby! I fondly remember taking over 4 hours to code a basic app and then realizing that I forgot to mount the 5.25 floppy drive - so I couldn't save it.
Loading games from cassette tape was sheer torture. Put in the tape, start loading and then go make lunch and read a book. - VtmnR, on 10/10/2007, -7/+15Put them together and what do you get?
- DatoeDakari, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8What is this word, 'buy'?
- stlcadet11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I picked up an 80gig classic on sunday... the sheer size on it compared to old 80 gig... let's just say technology is incredible. By the way, the screen is super bright and soo much better. Awesome to watch The Office on.
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5haha I just ordered a 80 gig classic(replacing a 1st gen windows). This saves me some money later when I get the urge to do so.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I went to the Apple Store looking to replace my 1st gen nano after 2 years. I played around with the new nano and watched a little video on it. Considering how small the screen is, it wasn't too bad. However the click wheel seemed smaller and more fragile feeling than the nano I had and I don't relish trying to watch video on it, so after some deliberation I went with the 80gb iPod Classic. The extra 1/2-inch makes a real difference IMO for video and it didn't get swallowed up in my big hands like the new nano seemed to. They didn't have any iPod Touch models yet (no surprise since they don't come out until later), but after playing with some of the iPhones there at the store I decided not to wait for one. I usually use an iPod while driving my car and without the click-wheel it's difficult to navigate it without having to look at it.
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8yeah because we all know that compression makes music even better.
- DCstewieG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Pass the papyrus.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Rocks? You had ROCKS?!? We had sub-atomic particles of proto-matter and we were LUCKY to have that.
- DPimp1262, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's amazing just how small the actual circuitry for the nano is. For the most part it's all screen.
- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4First computer had 3.2GB of HD space? Now I feel old.
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4they took apart a 80 gig classic which is only 249.
- ZackS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just toys? Where have you been for the last decade?
- jasmar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I know this is about the insides, but.... I think the photos of the nano and classic that are found on the Apple site misrepresent the thickness of these devices. The photos make both of them look thicker and less sleek looking than they really are. The shading you see around the edges of the front side implies a much more pronounced bevel. When you actually seen one of these in person and hold it in your hands, the "fatty" term no longer applies.
- worxman02, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I dont think they support the 6th gen yet, but lookup rockbox ( http://www.rockbox.org ). It is a linux based ipod firmware that plays most audio formats including flac, ogg, wma, etc. Oh and you shouldn't have music in wma/wmv format anyways. It is a know fact that those formats offer much crappier quality than mp3 or aac. Try to get all your music in mp3 or aac at 192 kbps VBR or more (for lossy formats) or flac or shorten for lossless.
- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm 23... we had a 486 with 250MB of HD space... And I remember getting a Sound Blaster 16 and 2x CD-ROM drive... took a technician two hours to install the drivers.
Now that was the *****.
Before that, we had an 80886... used it to play that magical 16-colour Wheel of Fortune. - Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+368000? Pfff! Modern rubbish!
♥ the KS10 in the DEC irons we had in the garage when I was a kid ;) - tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -1/+3Besides the fact that you can't buy any more episodes...
- rowlodge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2its funny how much space just the battery takes up, these things could even be more compact without the battery taking up 90% of the space.
- energyblue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2128MB HDD. The computer was older than I was.
- Chaulis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The classic doesn't look like they have changed anything but the hard drive in there. Honestly I would have expected a new system board due to the failure rate of the 5th gen.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, since they won't provide an evaluation version, I'm not interested. This sounds like a fscking scam to me.
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I remember a conversation with someone at college. He was talking about getting a 1GB hard disk. I was genuinely shocked. I said "One GIGABYTE... How the hell are you going to fill that up!".
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3he also puts premium gasoline in his geo and wipes his ass with fifty dollar bills. or doesn't every apple owner do that?
- BubbaJones, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I still have my TRS-80, with a couple of those big 5 1/4 inch floppy drives, a cassette tape drive, and dot-matrix printer. I also have a bunch of the cartridge games they made for it!!
- kaiwai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The failure rate to do more with the hard disk than the board itself. Mind you, half the problem is that the firmware exists on the hard disk instead of it being built in on the board - as with the case of most mp3 players.
Compared to other hard disk based players, I'd say they're about the same - ther e just happens to be more ipods and thus the rate of complaining is alot higher. - worxman02, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Oh and not to get dug down cause I mis-represented rockbox, it is NOT linux based. It is its own unique system
- TKDEE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It's not a waste if you know how to reassemble them, and I can tell you from experience that isn't very hard at all.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The OS isn't the major factor in determining how much CPU time a task takes and how smooth it is.
A difference of that sort is more likely due to differences in hardware. - TKDEE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No, but I've disassembled the Gen 2, and the Gen 4 several times. I meant that the iPods aren't that difficult to reassemble once you've gotten them open. The only time I've done any damage to one was with my first experiment with my failing Gen 2. The 2nd time I opened it up I poked a hole in the ribbon cable that connected the HD to the mother board, but it was a learning experience.
- malliemcg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Lots of people here have gone off on tangents about size of you're first hard drive relative to their first PC's, however - I'd like to know what the hell storage has to do with power? Admittedly it dates the era and likely computer and therefore computational power. Anyways enough of being a nit picky bastard. I'm amazed how small things are getting and how powerful they are - a device as small as the new nano-fatty capable of video playback and all the functions it supports is very impressive indeed.
- buu2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think you are talking about movies, but i've never heard of any. sorry. Maybe ipod linux can handle it.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The new nano and iPod Classic don't use OS X. It's simply a new version of the iPod software with some eye-candy. Based on my experience so far with the 80gb Classic, Coverflow is a little slow. Not nearly as smooth as the former iPod OS on my nano
- exec0extreme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2why do these people always need to pull the new stuff apart?
- yeahbuddy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So I know which stocks to buy!
- catskin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm interested in how difficult it is for myself to take those things apart. If they make it harder for me to have its battery replaced then that will become an issue.
- cave, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's called running a business. Get off my internets and go read a book.
- SuperSunny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apples Annoying Software that only plays their format? They play all the formats that I need, and that every single person I basically know needs. I don't see someone with 2000 songs in FLAC and OGG everyday.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well in my case it made for an interesting honeymoon - Dr. Hannibal Lecter
- Yoshi39, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thats Japan
- gregm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Have you checked the price of an 8GB flash drive? They're over $150. Assuming there is a 25% markup, its still $100 + the screen (likely ~ $75), the CPU (around $20) and case and battery (~15). Thats about $200 for the components... now add in marketing, warranty, and design.
Not a bad price to me. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No it's a comment on digg
kidding kidding...There have been stories out that after some of these recalls from China that managers have either been arrested or killed themselves. Apparently one guy offed himself over bad pet food. -
