- Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Why? Is there already a lack of Apple stores in NY?
- WiZZLa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'm not sure why you're getting dugg down, as you're bypassing the blogspam and your link has much better pictures...
- jefferson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15this proves you put apple in the title you're making the home page
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12They have like 6 different computers. Why do they need all that space?
I was in the Chicago store this weekend and thinking it was a lot of showiness for four basic options. (all the different set-ups are just varieties of combinations of accessories). - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I love it when large corporations open new retailers. It makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside.
- Scheissenegger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1032,000 - 50 for the pay desk = 31,950 square meters available for the iPhone waiting line.....
maybe I don't have to stand outside this time! - vare2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why are you so excited when you dont even know how it's going to look like.
- sid0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You have to if it's Apple. It isn't just *any* corporation, you know. It's the lifeblood of a thousand fanboys.
- jonr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow. A construction site. I'm dying of excitement here... What is wrong with diggers these days?
- UrbanOne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7For those who aren't familiar with Manhattan (I live here,) the meatpacking district has seen incredible change over the past decade. It is still home to some meat-packing plants (yes, parts of it smell sometimes, especially in summer.) It is also home to very high-end fashion retailers, a Design Within Reach, a few pretty good restaurants, many, many, bars that cater to many, many, folks from New Jersey, and, still, I believe, hookers. (For you Sex & the City fans, it's in the episode that Samantha moves into a loft and befriends a drag queen.)
The space reported used to house Markt, a pretty expensive restaurant (now relocated) and the Western Beef grocery store (also, relocated, I believe.)
It's an odd spot for Apple, but the demographics are there. And, though it's relatively close to the Apple store in SoHo, that store is packed constantly. Packed, like sometimes hard to get in the door. - CMfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it's anything like the other NYC store they need all that space so people can come in and check their email.
- TCKC2C, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow, a construction site!
- Rileyper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Ah there putting fruit in the meatpacking district.
- rzrshrp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Big whoop...
- profesorfrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The rising price of real estate and the greed of developers is killing the originality the uniqueness of New York, no more misfits and revolutionaries, no more adventurous entrepreneurs, no little guys allowed to play into the cultural landscape of New York. The are pricing out the New Yorkers out of New York. Really how many luxury condos and boutiques for the obscenely rich and absolutely stupid do we need in NY. (Honestly 100s of dlls for slave labor clothes, hey at least pass on the savings)
We are, in other words, letting the real New York die, and replacing it with a DisneyLand New York... Well I guess that is the reason some other cities are growing and developing new and original art and culture festival and events, and reastaurants, and so on... they are being priced out of New York. - ArnoldTPants, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7OMG! A giant corporation is building a store! Digg! Digg! Digg!!!!!!!!!
- jawbreaker4fs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also, Chelsea market is kickass.
- iRoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why is Steve Jobs building a Sand Castle in my city??
- BOFH2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so when this opens are we going to see "unboxing" pictures... I really hope not.
- DeejayLupo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very close to Googleplex NYC as well..
- rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey man, dont be hater! Get that 3rd ipod, a starbucks, make sure your little doggie is all tucked into your purse and off you go to live the American dream!
- profesorfrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny Thing
I used to work in the restaurant that occupied the corner of 14th and 9th... "Markt", a Belgian restaurant... I must say the space is large, and if they are indeed taking also the space of Western Beef it is going to be huge.
Sadly apple moving in means a bunch o people displaced, an a cheap supermarket, probably the last one in the neighborhood going out of business.
As much as I think the ***** that owned "Markt" is an ***** the reality is he took the place before the meatpacking district, one of the pioneers, kicked out by the greed of developers.
And the disappearance of the Western Beef leaves people nothing but overpriced and pretentious supermarket.
If the new apple store remains open 24 hrs it is going to be cool and I will visit often since I still work around the neighborhood. On the other hand the rising price of real estate and the greed of developers is killing the originality the uniqueness of New York, no more misfits and revolutionaries, no more adventurous entrepreneurs, no little guys allowed to play into the cultural landscape of New York. The are pricing out the New Yorkers out of New York. Really how many luxury condos and boutiques for the obscenely rich and absolutely stupid do we need in NY. (Honestly 100s of dlls for slave labor clothes, hey at least pass on the savings) - AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It may be a Mecca, but only in the sense that it will require a pilgrimage. The SoHo and 5th Ave stores are much closer to 3 out of 5 outer boroughs than this one would be. But the Apple faithful on the West Side and in Jersey now have a reason to rejoice.
- rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hehe, read that as "Apple High Profit stores"
- LGgeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2dugg down - only get blank page
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3How in god's name are construction pictures of a future Apple store worthy of Digg frontpage? If ***** like this continues to happen more and more people with leave for other sites that aren't so blatantly biased
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple High Profile stores are actually pretty incredible; a lot of design goes in before construction and with the product line expanding right and left (ex: Final Cut Pro Server) it's going to good to have all this space to show off more Pro Apps. In an interesting phenomena, both Retail mags and Design mags are featuring the same stores --- and they ain't in Milan. I wouldn't necessarily expect an Xsan or two but instead you may see the ability to get Xgrid going with whatever the successor to Shake is. Great to see nice retail spaces that aren't Brioni (small) or the house of Prada (large). Hard to imagine any other computer maker modeling after Hermes (but without the orange hahaha) !!!!
Bottom Line: Yes, more iPod stuff ... but hopefully more Pro level stuff, too.
Maybe a Red 4k!>!>!>!>!> Screw 1080 --- too small and still able to run on weak CPU / GPUs !!! - themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Need more Apple stores in Canada plz.
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Why do they need all that space?"
Because they are making lots of money with their retail stores. And it will probably house classes/presentations that will bring in even more potential customers. - mydave, on 07/28/2008, -0/+0Very good news for apple funs!

http://www.trgovinca.org - nickjag, on 12/13/2007, -0/+0Wow 32,000 that's a lot of space :) I have to say, their stores always amaze me as does their technology.
I look forward to seeing it when I come back up to NY in a couple years :)
Nick
http://www.innovign.com - fairlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pointless post, if I took a picture of the new shopping center near me getting built does that get front page?
- isaaccs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Apple's Manhattan stores are some of the most profitable stores per square foot in the world.
They're also wonderfully designed and interestingly intergrated into "historical" NYC areas, so they're of note for this reason alone. A new one opening up is a big deal for Apple users in NYC, so don't hate on it for making the front page.
Chelsea is also the home to a dizzying array of designers, creative firms, and the like (not that SOHO isn't) - these are Pro Apple users, not too mention that the machines are popular with the the trend savy residents of this area.
So there's a couple good reasons why to put it where it's supposedly going.
But this is the first I've heard of this, can anyone verify? - bjs256, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Actually, Western Beef didn't go out of business. They moved around the corner to 16th street and have a much nicer space now.
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They have Apple stores in several states, though. The one near me is nowhere as impressive but the commute is a lot better...
- igyigyigy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"32,000 square feet of floor spa"
Now that's a relaxing shop! - julian02392, on 10/12/2007, -13/+11Can't wait for it to be done!
- techsmack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Geez.. How about more cities, not more locations in one city. No apple stores near here.. :-/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1There are two apple stores I know of in Manhattan right now, Techserve and Apple SOHO both of which are great stores, I cannot wait for this one.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0yeah, NY has a couple of them already, how about expanding the franchise past NY, especially in Canada. They have been talking about building a flagship store in Toronto , the ones that exists in Toronto are glorified kiosks. And, there are other major urban centers other then Toronto in Canada. I mean, to buy Apple in Canada you either go to Futureshop/Bestbuy (same company) which have a small corner setup for Apple or online.
- streetr8cer13, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1this is going to be the meca of all apple stores even though there are 2 already i believe this one is 3 floors however i think someone else is taking the 3rd floor or part of it
- TruckStuff, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3So I guess we are just taking their word that this is a mac store? Because from I can tell, that could be just about any construction site in NYC. Buried as lame.
- MrPresident13, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I wish a Macbook would fall into my lap on the opening day. but it won't happen. Thanks alot Apple.
- sickswaystop, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4thats like a reason to goto NY
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Wrong place. Digg down.
- DeFex, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Thank the Chinese indentured slaves for saving them enough money to build it!
