- r4dius, on 10/12/2007, -13/+135Near the end there, when he's demo'ing the photo viewing, and uses a two-finger motion to zoom in on a particular aspect of the photo, I suddenly thought I was in Minority Report and got crazy excited. Maybe $499 doesn't seem so high... damnit...
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -9/+98I've never have paid $600 for a cell phone.. but that's because I hadn't seen a cell phone that was worth $600 dollars before. I think this one is.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+47It's a great price point for someone thinking about it as an alternative to a high-end smartphone. I was going to replace my Treo with a Sony P990i or a Fujitsu LOOK 830, and those are both more expensive. The Sony is $650 and the Fujitsu is $850.
Since I've already been saving up for one of those, now I can put the money in my bank account and wait until June.
This isn't for people that "just want a phone." That will probably be the iPhone nano in 2008. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43Does anyone remember this video about a touch-screen interface:
http://digg.com/hardware/Amazing_intuitive_interface_free_touch_driven_computer_screen
The "pinch" idea on apple's multi-touch seems to be right inline with what this guy has in mind. Foget mice, pointers, stylii, this guy sums it up well: "everything responds just like you would excpect it to. this is really the way humans should be interacting with machines" - mraustin1337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28so...beautiful...
*remembers that there will be no api*
*weeps* - stinkstank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Software. Software. Software.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Those phones got less attention because they were pictures of concepts, with no details about the interface or the user experience. Just making a touch screen phone is not what the iPhone is about. It's about the whole experience, from the UI to the integration with your PC or Mac, even the visual voicemail.
Can the LG jump from Wi-Fi to EDGE without any user interaction? Does it have multi-touch? Can it sync as easily as an iPod? How's the error-correction in the text input? How well does it manage to multitask, for example, sending emails while you're on the phone, or browsing your photos while you talk? Does it have Coverflow? How well is the SMS chat implemented? Are there widgets?
The answer to every one of those things is either "no" or "no one knows." - dimsum05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Has anyone asked if the phone vibrates?
- deto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Version 2 or 3 of this thing will be worth it: when it comes down in price, has more memory, has 3G, is available from other carriers, has decent battery life, and has a bluetooth keyboard available.
The interface looks amazing. MS is on version 5 of their mobile software and it still sux. - BarryChuckle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Hmm a voice-mail from Al Gore...
Wonder why he didn't answer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Bye bye sprint..
- ez12a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Remember when the RAZR was freaking expensive like two years ago? Whenever I saw it I thought that person must be rich to afford such a phone.
Now everyone and their mother has one..literally. One can probably be had for free with the signing of a new contract.
hopefully the iphone will follow the same trend and unlocked phones will be found cause Cingular blows. Wait a few years. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I can't decide whether to mod you up for hating your N91, or down for not understanding the difference between "eye candy" and user experience.
- drumnbass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@ cadillaccactus -
Yeah, I was reminded of that video of Jeff Han's work also. David Pogue even asked Jobs about it in one of his interviews - but Jobs claimed not to have heard of him, as well as politely mentioning again how long the iPhone's interface had been in development... - noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I just spent GOBS of money on a nokia e70 but come june, you'll be seeing me with an iPhone. The price point dosnt scare me. When you think of what the the iphone can do and what it will be able to do, because of its intuitive design it is not crippled by hardware and many more applications and uses for the product will come. The iphone is worth much more than 600 dollars. BTW, if anywants to buy a video ipod 30gig and a NEW nokia e70, email me :)
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12From a hardware standpoint the 2 devices look very similar.... but so do most PDAs and SmartPhones.
The Treo, Moto Q, Blackberry, Blackjack, ect... all look the same too.
This iPhone actually reminds me of an updated Newton. :)
Apple has been taking baby steps in this direction with the iPod from the very begining. - BrokenBeta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10EtherGnat: There's a volume wheel on the side of the iPhone. :-P
- jonknee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Bluetooth keyboards are not new technology. Given a decent Bluetooth stack, which is likely, the iPhone should support all the existing Bluetooth keyboards out there. That's why technology like Bluetooth is so cool, it all sort of just works.
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15is not Multi-Touch. and is LG
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7this will definitely out sell the PS3
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Someone above DID ask if it had a vibrate mode...
- CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Also, with the price, i want to buy it when i need a new iPod also, so that it mediates the expense a little bit. The 2 year contract thing is BS though... helloooo unlocked model on ebaaaay
- mostman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Check the software out. The navigation system is MUCH different. Cover flow when in landscape - click the art - shows the songs. Album summary when in portrait.
I think that is what he was referring to.
What you are seeing there is the future iPod interface. When they release the _true_ video iPod (this thing without a phone - maybe internet connection) - this is the interface they will use.
-Mike - drumnbass, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Many thanks for your insight.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Please define "real people."
I don't FEEL imaginary.
Remember when the Sony CEO said people would just have to save up a little more money to buy a PS3? Well, here's a much better example of something I'm willing to save my money for. At least I've got six months to do it. Put $3.50 in your piggy back every day, and when it comes out, you'll be ready with the cash. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12"It doesn't have the best storage capacity, but the interface is sure light years ahead of what is on current iPods."
Are you sure about that? Touchscreens have a lot of WOW factor, but they have inherent usability limitations. You won't be reaching into a jacket pocket to skip a track or lower the volume on this phone. Not only will you have to pull it out and look at it, you'll have to unlock it each time. Depending on the interface, your level of coordination, and your finger size it may be easy to select the wrong item. Fingerprints and scratches will likely be an issue. Will the phone work if you're wearing gloves?
The visual interface on the iPhone is the most beautiful I've ever seen, but I think this phone still has a lot to prove. - neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9only the iPhone is cooler...
- incognit0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm going to miss the scroll wheel too, but will get used to it eventually I'm sure.
- mostman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I have one thing to say.
Holy mother of ***** that scrolling list feature is SICK!
Flick to scroll and then it continues to slide as if its on a wheel and settles to a stop. Wow.
Folks that dont use Apple products and wonder why people that do are massive FanBoys - watch that single feature 100 times - and then you have your answer.
Its not eye-candy. Its visual feedback that serves a purpose while giving you the sense that you are not using a digital device.
-Mike - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@cadillaccactus
If you check that guy's page that demoed that UI, it now says:
"Update: Yes, we saw the keynote too! We have some very, very exciting updates coming soon- stay tuned!"
http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/
And here's further comment from him:
http://tedblog.typepad.com/tedblog/2007/01/the_new_apple_i.html - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I know they want 1% worldwide cellphone market share in 2008, cause they said it, but I hope they're not disappointed when they re;lease their other Nao phone, and collectively get 20%?
- BigEazy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They're treating it like a freaking Faberge egg.
- insanewriters, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It doesn't have the best storage capacity, but the interface is sure light years ahead of what is on current iPods.
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4why haven't u guys watched the keynote or looked at apples website. it shows u exactly how typing works
get of ur lazy asses. - mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6ur prolly one of those douches that actually believe that Al said he invented the internet... sheesh.
right wing propaganda is just too funny sometimes. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@shrimpcrackers:
I don't know why I'm feeding you, but I'll respond anyway.
The LG KE850 is not out anywhere. The latest I've seen is that it will be debuting as the Prada phone in Europe in March or April. I suppose it's possible that you know something that none of the sites like Gizmodo, Engadget, PhoneScoop, etc. know - if so, please share.
Sending a few photos of a prototype to the press is NOT the same as a "debut."
I don't know what the basis is for your claims that the interface is "very close." The largest gallery I've found is here: http://www.slashphone.com/89/6073.html and the interface looks closer to Windows Mobile than the iPhone. Perhaps you're going by the dial keypad. I'll admit, they do both use ten digits, numbered sequentially from 1 to 9, with a zero at the bottom.
Since no one has seen the LG KZVNDKR293492 or whatever yet, all I can go on is some comments from folks like Gizmodo:
"Hopefully the touchscreen works a little better than some of LG's other touch-sensitive products"
and Engadget:
"Its specs remain a mystery"
The rest of your argument against the iPhone seems to be the garden-variety feature comparisons. "It's just a gimmick." "So-and-so can do it, too."
The mouse was "just a gimmick" back in '84. Windows 3.1 had scroll bars, just like the Mac.
Today, yes, technically, you can use another smartphone to listen to music, or another MP3 player to see album covers. That doesn't mean it will be an equal experience.
My Treo has a media player on it. I tried it one time, and never bothered with it again. It was that crappy.
If you're happier paying the same price or more for someone else's smartphone, with a cobbled-together UI that bears the fingerprints of a dozen committees, just so you can avoid Apple products, then knock yourself out. - TechyLah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Someone asked if it vibrates. Of course, but in the iPhone waycooler way.
It has body heat sensors to tell whether its in your pants, jacket, or shirt pocket and vibrates appropriately.
Alternatively, you can select the iBuzz app and hold it on your temples or back of your neck.
If you're a chick and cool with it, you simply slip on a fem-cover,
select vib level (this one goes past eleven!) and ....it takes care of business! - lopla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5MS fanboy says "waaa waaa waaa, Japan has had this tech for ageas" -whatever punk.. I live in Japan and have seen some cool phones but nothing close to this.. DEAL WITH IT.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As if hitting 7 four times for the letter S like we do now is the pinnacle of speed and ease of use.
If instead of a Tracfone you are you talking about one of those giant "smart phones" with qwerty keyboards with tiny buttons, there's a reason only business users have them: they're extremely ugly, unwieldy and uncool. The iPhone is the smart phone for the non-business crowd that actually fits in your pocket. I have a hard time believing texting on the iPhone will be any more difficult that texting on my RAZR is today. It's not like the flat RAZR keypad offers so much tactile feedback you can use it without looking. - DiggRadar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Incredibly sweet. I am blown away every time I see the scroll or pinch.
I just hope there is a version with a hard disk that will at least match my current iPod with video. 8 Gigs just isn't going to cut it. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It will sync to a PC too via iTunes.
And this notion that it would play only iTunes protected songs is completely ridiculous. I guess the FUD is working if some people can think Apple could even consider this option...
Of course it will play MP3s and unprotected AAC and lossless songs. Same for videos, it'll play unprotected MPEG-4 and .h264 movies, there's no doubt about it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh and just so everyone knows, you can terminate your contract early with Cingular without paying a penalty if you tell them you're in the service and are being deployed overseas. Be sure you look up some army jargon on Google first and know the name of the city in iraq you're being "deployed" to.
- DTJunkie07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I want one but i think ill just wait a good year, year and a half for the next evolution of the iPhone. My 30 gigabite ipod video and Samsung sch-a950 will have to do until then. But I do want a smartphone....
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's also not a tablet PC. Or an Origami. What's your point?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@klawz:
WiFi is on a few smartphones, but it has to be selected manually. I can say from experience with my MacBook and my Fujitsu laptop that Apple is much better at managing WiFi connections than Microsoft, and I expect their mobile offerings to follow suit.
"Syncs very well." Please, tell me which smartphone you're talking about! I've used two Windows Mobile phones, and I have a Palm Treo now - yes, technically they sync. But don't even get me started on what it's like to try and transfer a photo off your phone, or make your calendars play nice. There's a big difference between their promises and the real world.
Error correction on typing: Go back and see what David Pogue said about the iPhone. My Treo has no error correction at all, although my Windows phones were at least predictive. I'll call this one up in the air until I get my hands on an iPhone.
For all the rest, you could make a feature list that makes the current smartphones sound good on paper, but user experience trumps feature lists.
Since all the smartphones that this will compete with are already in the $450-$850 range, the only real issue is whether you like the Apple approach, and are willing to be a Cingular customer. There's nothing wrong with deciding the answer is "no" to one of those questions, but for those of us who say "yes," this is a very reasonable deal. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It has an API, it's called Safari. If you write a web application that runs in Safari, it will run on the iPhone.
- KingMoses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Is making fun of "Zune fanboys" still fun even if there's never been such a thing?
- nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The target is not for everyone. This is a high end product that's not meant for every consumer.
- shank2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Of course it can play any MP3 file just like every other Ipod out there. Whoever started the FUD about Ipods only being able to play iTunes songs?!?! Of course that is not true. Most people have most of thier own ripped from CDs MP3 songs far outnumbering songs bought from iTunes.
- Shabadoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5If I could, I'd make love to that thing.
