- autoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Depends for what. The point about Perian is that it enables codec support for all quicktime based apps, including frontrow. And now supports srt subtitles too, yay!
- dontbejack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16VLC for Mac OS X is a very iffy situation. Not as stable as on other OSes, a bit sketchy at times when playing some formats. Quicktime is native to the OS and because it's plug-in compatible, it can be much better with things like Perian. I don't know what I would do without this plug-in.
- Spampy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Finally! Something that makes Quicktime worth using instead of downloading some third-party player... I hope?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13They wanted it to be auto updating or at least give the option to auto update.
- martalli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11This is great news. Even better to see at least one news item out of 660+ upcoming articles that is not about the iphone.
- masterc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I absolutely love Perian, but why doe it have to be a pref pane? Why can't it be like it used to be- just drag the .component to the right folder?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8On the Mac, Quicktime is quite good assuming you have codecs for your videos. I will definitely agree that the Windows version sucks. I'm not sure why Apple doesn't improve it because it has sort of an anti-halo effect.
- vh1`, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7huh?
any components that help quicktime help frontrow. components are fun like that - gbooker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6As autoy said, it enables support for all quicktime based apps. Yes, this does include Quicktime Player, NicePlayer, frontrow, and the like, but it is also important to note that it includes editing apps as well. We have had reports of perian's use in applications such as Final Cut Pro, Crush, and other apps which use Quicktime as their backend.
And, of course, there is always the appleTV too, on which getting VLC to run is nowhere near as easy. - ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Quicktime is a giant media framework embedded into your system. You are free to use Quicktime Player or any third party player. Some players include their own framework (e.g. VLC), some uses Quicktime framework way better than Apple Quicktime player does (e.g. Niceplayer, realplayer 10+)
Perian is a quicktime component which is a complete right way to use the quicktime framework you already have on your system. Thanks to perian, you get lots of supported media playback plus enhanced support to H264 etc. It is alll CPU accelerated too. - gbooker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Expect it to be available via the ATV Loader later. In the mean time, if you right click on the pref pane and examine the package contents, and enter the directory Contents/Resources/Components, you will see zip files for all its components. Extract them, and copy them over.
Alternatively, you can install it on your mac, and then copy the components from there over to your AppleTV. - dkontrec, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Alleluia, it was about the time. Thanks to the team!
- Niten, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Personally, I have no manner of luck with VLC on OS X. In particular, OS X VLC doesn't seem to handle FLV nearly as well as it does on Linux or Windows. (Unfortunately I cannot offer any insight whatsoever into why that may be.)
Perian is excellent for playing FLV and other codecs that VLC occasionally chokes on. And more importantly, it's a QuickTime component; with Perian, all your QuickTime applications can be given easy access to a wide range of new codecs. - LeonardNimrod, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Do I need to first ditch my current OGG, MKV and A52 and Perian codecs in my Quicktime folder before installing?
- SpoBo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yes!! awesome! subs work now. although no asian subs :( Installation is a breeze. hats off.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"Do we need to remove the old perian component before installing?"
No. It overwrites the old component. - crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Leopard Quicktime has fullscreen for free!
By the way, does this let you play these video types in front row and later quick look? If not, I'm sticking with VLC. - iMags, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Doh! Wrong link! It was nothing about the iPhone there!
- punchmonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Perian 1.0 is set up a little differently than Perian 0.5. Has anyone got this going on the AppleTV yet? I tried myself but haven't had any luck yet.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5.mkv support??? Finally I can ditch VLC.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2There is no Ogg Vorbis support in Perian 1.0. There is Vorbis support for the MKV container, but not for the Ogg caontainer in Perian 1.0.
- punchmonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I did get Perian 1.0 setup on the AppleTV after some digging around -- I neglected to remove Apple's h264 codec. However, playback is extremely poor with less than 1fps for the x264 videos I tried
- KAMiKAZOW, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ogg: No, because Perian 1.0 doesn't have its functionalty. MKV and A52: Yes.
- AngeluX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Do we need to remove the old perian component before installing?
- Niten, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Does anyone know how well Perian 1.0's new Ogg Vorbis support works? Is it better or worse than the Xiph QuickTime component? (Or is it actually the very same implementation?)
Anyway, thanks, Perian team! I don't know what I'd do without this plugin. - wesamel, on 10/11/2007, -9/+10I'm not a Mac user, but isn't VLC better?
- chirs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Ya, you can use QuickTime player, or something like Niceplayer, which does full screen for free.
- linkinpark342, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Someone please enlighten me, a mac noob. What is the purpose of an opensource quicktime alt for an apple? i.e. what are the current drawbacks for the apple made one? (i ask because i got my hopes up thinking it was for linux but i realized "hey wait, vlc!" (also applies to mac, windows))
- Jorlwind, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"which does full screen for free."
...Or if your on a Mac you can download the free app Quicktime FS and have your Full screen too!
http://macweaver.com/software/quiktimefs/quiktimefs.htm
A pain to be sure, but you can still have FS for free. - Skeuomorph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The preference pane shows "Older Version", then "Updating", then "Installed Version: 1.0". So, I'd say no, you don't need to remove the older one manually first, it seems to do it for you.
- OdepiTy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7not for osx
- LuCiFer6, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I noticed something with playing same divx file in Quicktime (w/Perian Codec) and VLC. Quicktime used 30% of the CPU and about 20 megs of ram. Playing that same file in VLC it only used 10% of the CPU but it used 50megs of ram. Being that I have a MBP I think I would rather use VLC than Quicktime.
- presentday, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It means we can get subtitles in Front Row. Cool!
- tezmo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0but does this mean my appletv can now manage 720p x264 mkvs?
- kevnaca, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Finally movies load up quickly in Leopard just like they have in Tiger. No more long delay for videos to launch.
- michaelbrown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0looks like i'll be buying an appletv now.
- michaelbrown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0someone above said they didn't have luck with the appletv and there was a response that told how to do it.
- astrange, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0You mean SMIL? SRT (eastern europe) and SSA (sweaty anime fans) should play all the languages you could want. SMIL should be in another version or two from now.
- videosoftware, on 10/09/2008, -0/+0That's great! BTW, there is also another mkv converter tool, which can totally convert mkv to avi, mpeg, wmv, mov, rm, mp4 and mp3.
http://www.mkv-converter.com - StarManta, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3That might be taking it a little too far... Quicktime Player still sucks. But it certainly helps for embedded videos in webpages and other apps. And if Frontrow ever gets its act together it'll be great for that.
- dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Yep, unless the new fancy (And slightly annoying) preference pane icon removes older versions automatically.
- vh1`, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2huh?
any components that help quicktime help frontrow. components are fun like that
