- Trojan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think in market/user numbers terms, this isn't that ingenious because your average Mac consumer is not a wiz with new apps. Mom and Dad mac heads may not be willing to "become part of the app" or enter into these types of esoteric geek contests. Despite not having mass appeal, this type of marketing likely can get to specific demographics very well.
I think the problem with shareware, however, is that this demographic knows how to steal an app or get a serial number all too well.
My 2¢ (bury first post) - greymarketbrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What I marvel at with all this new wave of apps is the fact that there appears to be a group of ppl stupid enough to pay the developers for the privilege to be beta testers. Seems like these sites specialize in hyping mediocre apps and charging for a buggy beta. Just goto versiontracker.com and find what you're looking for.
- Bitgod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'll tell you the best way to sell software. Low pricing. It seems to me Mac software is often cheaper than PC software, and because of that I probably have a higher ratio of purchased software on my Mac than on my PC. If someone whips up a handy app and only charges say $15 for it, I'm much more likely to pay for it.
- flyindutchman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Too bad most of the apps are worthless.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4why digg ? It's full of kids with no money. No chance of anyone buying anything from ad links here.
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I've found that all of the apps offered in the aforementioned scams to be total garbage I wouldn't want anyway. Good way to get stale bread to marked though.
- greymarketbrain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5no, digg and youtube make me wish I'd thought of it first
=) - jessed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Honestly I think it has nothing to do with features.
Development costs are higher in an MS environment. Think about it: Microsoft Visual Studio costs ~$300 for for Visual Studio .NET 2005 Standard Upgrade. What does it cost for XCode? Zip. - tim507, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I agree. Very creative services and apps are coming out and each one it starting to impress me more and more. I definitely digg and encourage more sites like MyDreamApp, MacHeist etc etc.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What, you don't like the naptime software or the Youtube client? Spotlight front-end? Crappy games?
No?
Maybe a mysterious bundle of all of the above, for one low low price?
I subscribed to the MacZot feed for a while because one of the first apps I saw there was AppZapper. For months, it was the *only* app posted that was worth a damn. I imagine it still is. - tttsquared, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Though these new ways of marketing have been getting some flack lately I personally have sold software on MacZot and have purchased quite a few apps on it too... There's been some great deals..
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Macupdate and Versiontracker are wonderful sites, and they let the user find what they want. Not some gimmicky sham that creates hype around half-assed, buggy, crap-ware forced upon users all for the sake of eyecandy and zero usefulness.
I used them both in he past week twice to find apps for what I needed to do and bought them both. - greymarketbrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am completely with you...
I find myself being one of "those" ppl that gets a ton of questions from friends who recently got a mac.... macupdate and version tracker are usually where I tell them to go first. - ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*raises hand*
- jvicinanza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MacAppADay seemed like a good idea but everytime Ive checked the site the featured app was a preview/demo version. You have to fork out moola to get the full blown version of the app. I can download demo software without any help from such services.
- tim507, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1 im all for niche audiences.
As for the serial number, hardware fingerprints are doing alot better now adays.
But as for anything,..there will always be someone who breaks the system. if not many. - greymarketbrain, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5and you'll get dugg down for saying that by all the zealots kissing those asses
- greymarketbrain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3because digg will get bought up by some old fart like Murdock (sp?) and Rose will make some mad cash.
an avid user of adblock myself I can say I don't know how anyone would use adclicks or why. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Adblock + Filterset G and you can't go wrong.
Of course, for sites like this you really should disable adblock every so often and click on a few of the ads, its just common courtesy if you like and get a benefit from the service. - BlurredWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a dfferent model of pricing. Windows software often goes for the pricepoint first, typically $50. Then they are like 'we need to add more to make this worth 50 dollars' and keep adding crap.
Mac shareware often is along the lines of "this product is done, lets sell it for $10" and move onto the next project. - lolwtfhaha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"The nepotism - so to speak - that seems to be involved in these marketing circles appears to be at every turn" . . . "Now none of this observation is meant in a negative light."
No negatively here folks... But seriously who would *buy* software anyway? - tim507, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1im all for niche audiences.

My 2¢ - blindpyro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Makes you wish you thought of it first, huh? :)
- greymarketbrain, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4My dream app. amounts to a way to get massive amount of work done in a short time - with very little investment. A software company that has to pay so little to test market an idea, have the best ideas honed by a huge group of potential buyers, then pay very little to the creatives behind the idea.... great way to make a buck. But then again, so are pyramid schemes.
