Enjoy your ***** desktop now, bitch!" - inactive, on 01/04/2008, -2/+22Its not Apples fault you dumbass.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -1/+20No, it isn't. What does QuickBooks have to do with Apple?
Now, be good and go die in a fire. - happyseamonster, on 01/04/2008, -0/+18Their idea of a fix is to disable your update feature so it doesn't download the offending software. Why don't they just remove the bad software from their update server? In other words, if you don't disable auto-update, they will STILL send you the virus-like software. WTF is going on with these people?
- mavantix, on 01/04/2008, -0/+16I'd like to know how it's possible for a company that writes software that stores important financial information to be this irresponsible with their clients' data.
- w3torg, on 01/04/2008, -1/+15There's a prime example of how to not learn from a critical mistake.
- santaliqueur, on 01/04/2008, -1/+11Never got past the "macbook" part, did you? I would say 'rtfa', but in your case, rtf description. SO quick to trash Apple, didn't work out too well for you.
- supermanred, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5Lol, I was going to say that too.. RTFD
- newbill123, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5"Oh! They mean a fix for _that_ critical data loss bug. We thought they meant the other one."
- Raydr, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5Digg ate the 2nd half of my comment...
I bet #4 is where the error is - they "forgot" to put the update in it's own folder, and as part of their cleanup task, they delete the folder containing the upgrade files (a common cleanup).
Oops. - roennow, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4Stop spamming your ***** profile on some random social site
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -1/+5You're an idiot - why not learn to read before you comment?
- Raydr, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4I bet heads are gonna roll on this one.
I bet it was a simple bug in the scripting for the upgrade:
1.) Download Update File
2.) Decompress to Desktop
3.) Do whatever
4.) Delete update from desktop - Ryosen, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4You must not be familiar with Intuit.
- newbill123, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4mavantix asked: "...how it's possible for a company that writes software that stores important financial information to be this irresponsible with their clients' data."
It's a bit of legalese called an End User License Agreement, and it's really the only distinction that keeps Intuit Quickbooks from being classified as the first widespread Trojan Horse malware to hit Mac OS X. - troydoogle7, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4Intuit are absolutely evil, do yourself a favour and look at sage or even microsoft. Hit these bastards in the pocket. Their upgrade policies are huge ripoffs and they have a long history of taking software shortcuts to release something quickly. (look at qb 2005). Clearly in this case the issue has bit them squarely in the ass. Karma
- virtualball, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3...Time Machine?
- addingyears, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Intuit is a piece of ***** company. They deliberately release ***** mac software and charge a fortune for an upgraded version that does little but correct their previous *****-ups.
The only thing that has EVER made me think about getting a PC is the poor state of financial management software for the Mac. Until I give in or until intuit gets their act together (qb pro 2007 is a subtle step in the right direction), I just have to suffer. - noahhoward, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3State of a generation? "It's just a job" attitude?
- TheWindBlows, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Nothing new.
their older programs would randomly delete users profile data for just about no reason... - rspeed, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2So if you're driving down the street at twice the speed limit and run someone over, you can't be arrested for manslaughter? The fact that their QA testing didn't find a bug like this should hold them accountable.
- noahhoward, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2More modern? This has nothing to do with the Mac, it has to do with ***** software from a ***** company.
- nosecohn, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Intuit's Mac offerings have always been second rate.
- knightboat, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2*losing
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Of course, buy from Apple instead. And it must be everyone elses fault right? OMFG you mactarded sheep!
- technoredneck, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1EULA gets 'em out of it, probably. Not sure what I think of this. On one hand, someone ought to be held accountable, but on the other, it's not like they did this on purpose or that such data could have a pricetag.
- srafx, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Well, in my opinion I would never use quickbooks. There are plenty of suitable replacements that are native osx apps. Try some of this software: http://www.iggsoftware.com/
- roberto_deneero, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Where is Larry H Parker when you really need him?!
- herkalees, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Run SuperDuper! (or your favorite back up program) nightly and get on with your life.
- christophelyon, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Why are prople keeping unrecoverable documents on their computer ? Any file should be - at least - backuped automatically at least on a local device (by local, I mean something physically present at the same location as the computer)
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1the main reason they have such a dominance, is because all the accountant's demand that business use it.
- addingyears, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Actually, it sounds like it hit plenty of mac users in the ass. Thank god this incident hasn't affected me (yet), I won't speak for anyone else, but I need QB for my business. I have no interest in suing intuit or anything like that... or even to see intuit suffer. I just want my software to work so I can get my work done.
- dBass, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Quicken on the Mac has been ***** for ever. It doesn't even embrace the Mac vision.
Let's hope Uncle Steve completes iWork soon: First Pages, Numbers, Keynote; soon Bento, Cashflow? I don't even care if Apple releases it, or its subsidiary does. - inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Sure, buy a $400 windows computer (+$50 for MS Money) rather than a $50 app (of high quality that integrates wonderfully with my Mac). GTFO Troll.
- stevejobs, on 01/04/2008, -2/+2Quality control is really a non-issue at Intuit, and most big software companies. Release the new update, which is full of bugs, make quick money and later release a patch. I'm sick of it from all these companies. Uggggghhh
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1OR buy a 1200 mac, Buy 100-150$ updates every year for MAC OS, and buy a completely different app that is not compatible with anything. High quality?!! You're the mactarded troll !
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1Really though its the companies fault for not having the proper channels in place to catch this bug. Then it is the testing/QA departments fault for not catching the bug in test cases. Then its the developers fault for being so dumb, that he/she/it coded such a bug in the first place. As a programmer, I see it as one thing to typo some output, miscalculate or even botch some data. But to completely destroy all the files on a desktop is really bad.
But regardless of THAT, why are people keeping critical unrecoverable documents on their desktop? They should be in their own directory, and without question backed up on an external device or CD. - fireaway, on 01/04/2008, -2/+2Clinton: so last century. Don't you mean, like a Bush CIA attorney ditches torture tapes, or records of billions of cash sent to Iraq?
- LordRedSnake, on 01/04/2008, -2/+2Have you ever used Quickbooks? How they have such dominance in the small business sector is a mystery to me. It is such a lousy product I can't believe that no other company has successfully challenged it. They claim that their Windows version now supports Vista, but it in fact struggles with basic elements of the 32 bit Windows environment that have been around since NT 4.0. You still have to do arcane workarounds just to make it work properly in a multi-user environment. This is not surprising at all.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -1/+1This is just massive incompetence
but hey still beats using windows - inactive, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1Only the Liberal press has labeled them "Torture tapes." Recordings that cna compromise undercover operatives are routinely destroyed, and this is just a case of the Liberal MSM making hay of a non-issue.
- troydoogle7, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1Wow Just like their Windows offerings... oh wait they are third rate/
- bjornski, on 01/04/2008, -4/+3Ron Paul wouldn't use Quickbooks......
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -5/+3Or you could just get a Windows computer and be done with it.
- happyseamonster, on 01/04/2008, -3/+1For those with Macs, load Windows 2000 Pro SP/4 or XP/SP2 with VMWare or Parallels and use different financial software. The pitfalls here are still better than Intuit.
- notjustmii, on 01/04/2008, -8/+2I would see lawsuits for loosing that kind of data.
- SCMacUser, on 01/04/2008, -10/+2What's sad is that this is an OS-level bug, that the Quickbooks crew failed to account for.

http://www.rixstep.com/1/20071217,00.shtm - inactive, on 01/04/2008, -14/+3I'm actually happy about this. The Church bookkeeper has stubbornly hung onto her Mac for years despite pressure to upgrade to a more modern system. To make a long story short, this is the death knell for Mac at the Church and in the businesses of most the church members. The fact that the accounting system deletes records like a Clinton Whitewater attorney has caused a lot of frustration and expense. There were a few people who've been saying they want to wait and see if the update restores the lost data, but with THIS screw up in play, I think even our bookkeeper will see the light and ditch Mac.
Thank you QuickBooks, thanks to you, a small Indiana town will be Mac free in a matter of days. - ddorent, on 01/04/2008, -19/+1it is
- wontstoptalking, on 01/04/2008, -30/+1*gasp!* Apple did something wrong? SAY IT AIN'T SO!
