- KingAdrock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30personally I blame Vista.. and rap music
- bertboerland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Judging by the teenage behavior in the comments ("WTF", "LOL"), I can only say that this man doesnt like you (and me :-) for a very good reason. He "knows" stuff, has been reading RFC's, has been coding, and is not a 2006 puber couch potato that can only hit "digg this". Read his blog, copy http://tomayko.com/weblog/2006/12/30/digg-scares-me in your browser, read!
And dont me mod me up or down, dont digg http://tomayko.com/weblog/2006/12/30/digg-scares-me, dont think for another, think for yourself. - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21It's incredibly unlikely, but entirely possible. You'd have to draw a rather high amount of current ... and it's more likely that he has a faulty power supply than anything else.
- anthonyberet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Hey diggers - he's blocked referrals from Digg.
It seems like he doesn't give a toss what you think. - Anticitizen1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm glad someone finally stood up and said "hey kiddies, no more candy!"
This man is totally right, but just sitting around in the comments section will not solve anything, and petty bitching back and forth about it wont either. Its really sad that this is the state of Digg, it goes to show that the glory days are over and the site has fallen to petty arguments and popularity contests rather than informed, intellectual reviews and ratings.
The saddest part is that neither this post, this comment or any of the comments people will form about it will solve the problem, as it will not change the majority's minds. The majority being the section of people who digg every little piece of entertaining crap they find out there and leave little stupid comments without even the slightest consideration for proper internet grammar or etiquette OR any consideration to the actual point of the article/post/video. For instance:
"My PowerBook cord melted as well. I had it still wrapped while using it and it melted together.
I'm fairly confident it was George W. Bush's fault; not parallels."
Notice the lack of useful information in this comment. The snide remarks about the president, not that he doesn't deserve them, are not related.
Again: (its disconcerting that this comment received +2 diggs.)
"OMFG IE7 is even worse than I thought, quick switch to FF before IE eats your cat."
EXCELLENT DEDUCTION! So in this post about web developing for IE (his customers are 99% IE users, but you knew that...) you derived the idea that IE is bad and we should all switch to FF. I'm glad that no matter what the contagious attitude of propagation surrounding Firefox transcends the boundaries of LOGIC and COMMON SENSE. "Oh our customers are almost all using IE7, we should switch to Firefox, cause its so much better you know, I herd it from the internet!"
The OMFG is a nice touch too, really speaks to the children and preteens we like to keep around Digg. - fluidfoundation, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18a faulty macbook part? why.. I never...
- lazyron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Dugg. Cuz he pwnd Digg, and I read his rebuttal before TFA from Reddit anyway.
- feaks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Nice MacGyver (aka duct taping) skills.
- AlfaWolph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I say good for him. I actually agree with the guy.
- EbenieRosa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Can't read the Article, WTF? Says it's Forbidden for Diggnerigger'sssss?
- BooshTukka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5He didn't post the story on digg, someone else did. He makes some great points, in fact. People forget that digg is just a glorified bookmarks page that has rankings. People don't always write stories just for diggers, and this guy certainly didn't. The comments sections on digg are getting more and more snidey and negative, and at the same time more innane. Is this what happens when a site gains mass popularity? Did youtube ever have reasonable comments on it?
- jcblitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He should have done to different articles on this, one for the cord and one on parallels. But mine melted too, obviously not software related. Apple claims I was the only one to ever report it even though I personally know someone else who reported it as well. Please call apple and let them know if your cord melted. My couch was almost lit on fire.
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Obviously nothing but a coincidence.
- xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6You in a nutshell. Make stupid comments.
- silicon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6large current draw + small gauge wires = hot wires = melting cord = fire
- Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Is this a late entry for dumbest post of the year?
This is obviously a hardware issue, not whatever software you were "testing" at the time. It is even stated in the article that Apple technicians say it's a hardware issue.
Flagged as inaccurate. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Well, it's indirectly related: software using intensive resources -> on OSX machine that can't properly control power consumption -> which draws too much power from power source -> that uses too small of a gauge wiring = melted wire.
- commandante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd still completely concede the man his right not to welcome it though.
He's writing a blog and probably has a pretty good idea who his "segment" is, I.E. the people he wants to write for and relate to. If he doesn't want diggers looking down their nose at him; more power to him. - zota, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"obvious effort to get a tremendous amount of diggs"
The author of the article obviously doesn't give a rat's ass about bookmarks that come packaged with ranting and advertising (aka: diggs).
There's a lot of other ranked bookmarking sites out there. Digg's unique contribution -- these witty, sophisticated comments threads -- don't add any value.
Good riddance, digg. - gcodori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This issue with the cord has been pretty well documented since the macbook was issued. I have a C2D version myself and the cord is very frail - most likely 1/8 inch round. I can see this cord having issues in the future if there is constant unplugging and winding the cord up as most do.
- frukt, on 10/25/2007, -7/+9digg has become a large gaping goatsesque anus, no wonder people block incoming traffic referred from here. slashdot and reddit for me, go ***** yourself digg.
- vizerei, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I agree with you guys, completely inaccurate.
- leopardhunter, on 02/18/2009, -1/+3Macintoshes have had torched power cords before.
Case in point:
Pics of Torched MacBook Power Connector from "Cult of Mac" blog
http://wiredblogs.tripod.com/cultofmac/index.blog?entry_id=1437672
BTW, kudos to Apple tech support for replacing the MacBook discussed in the article at the link in this comment. - martinjester, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Unfortunately, standard Duct Tape doesn't insulate. Hopefully he doesn't find this out the hard way.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I'd have to agree. This story should focus more on the actual problem: that is, that the power cord was faulty. Just because you were testing Microsoft software when it happened, doesn't mean it was MS's fault.
- rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, you are right. I realized my mistake too late. I retract all comments that he was trying to get dugg.
I did mention he makes good points as you mention.
However, I still maintain being allegedly "terrified" of lame comments is ridiculous, that he has a bruised ego from some relatively mild comments on his "discovery", and that his significant over-reaction to the digg audience is awful. If you post something on the internet, it may get noticed by the public and criticized. - SobyOne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Mac = Engineered To Death (yours)
Consider upgrading your power cord to a PC power cord. - lgc90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's likely a combination of the intensive CPU load and other things, like the building's wiring or a hardware problem with the computer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@PeeTeeR why do you Say M$ when everybody says MS? are you crazy?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Can we nominate the Digg community for the award?
- Telsmith, on 11/02/2007, -0/+0all who commented are idiots who believe in fairy's and ufos crazys.
- donsmith, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Dude, Both interesting points, but next time make two entries.
- renegadeafk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2this just inned, ITUNES EATS BABIES TRUE!!!
- McNash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'm following suit.
- rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I don't know... both sides have some minor points worth considering, but the reaction from the author seems as childish as the comments that he's railing against. Posting to digg.com is not for the faint of heart and being allegedly "terrified" of lame comments is ridiculous.
I think the original author is frustrated by his lack of recognition for his "discovery" and he is suffering from a bruised ego. He rails against the senseless comments, but he used an equally inflammatory headline in an obvious effort to get a tremendous amount of diggs. He claims he's not trying to get a really popular digg post, but it's obvious to even the youngest digg user that he thought he had the "next big thing". He may have even thought he'd gain a limited amount of fame from the post.
Both the silly comments and the author's petty reaction are tempests in a teapot at best. His report of the original incident is somewhat interesting, but lost in shuffle of his wild over-reaction to negative feedback. - dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2and video games.
- alok0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2http://www.duggmirror.com/apple/Parallels_Makes_IE_Testing_Suck_Less_Melts_Power_Cord/
- sedo1800, on 10/12/2007, -13/+12LOL new video card makes warcraft less laggy
Melts house?
WTF is wrong with this guy. - blachole, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Can't understand how they allow this kind of crap to make it to the front page...
- mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2lol i don't even know why i'm bothering to comment on this... but it seems doggdot.us is no longer a solution for weeding out stupid digg articles. i mean... does this even make sense to the poster?
In a similarly stupid fashion, just imagine! Shelly was pushing buttons on her cellphone when all of a sudden her car's radiator exploded (in a ford taurus, of course...). From this I guess we can conclude that cellphones explode car parts... amirite? - Jones105, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2My PowerBook cord melted as well. I had it still wrapped while using it and it melted together.
I'm fairly confident it was George W. Bush's fault; not parallels. - vuke69, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3OMFG IE7 is even worse than I thought, quick switch to FF before IE eats your cat.
- bluenash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1go ahead, bite the apple...don't mind the maggots
/rolling stones - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Agreed, this article should be buried. Deep.
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Not the internet's fault this guy is an idiot. MY POWER CHORD MELTED? MUST BE MICROSOFT'S FAULT!
- sbenus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2down at 45 diggs... what a load of crap
- kiantech, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6the fact this made it to the front page makes me sick, people honestly can not be that stupid/ignorant on digg to actually believe IE7 is the cause of a melted power supply.....
and if it was an application fault, which it is not, it would be Parallels not IE. -
