- JustinHorne, on 11/03/2007, -8/+305As a Mac user for years, let me be the first to apologize for the soon to occur fanboy flame war.
- kashem, on 11/03/2007, -10/+153I think you forget that us Geeks are a very small minority to the key consumer group of personal computers as a whole. Average Joe, Jane, and son & daughter want to get on MySpace, "Google" things in Yahoo search, email, chat, and watch free porn. You mention Linux to them and they'll think it's the new strain of Avian Flu that's supposed to be really bad this year.
- inactive, on 11/05/2007, -36/+161I love it etc... But, how can we get an objective review from a mag that is selling the product they are touting? Answer: You can't. I mean, right about the article is a button to buy it! That's like listening to a Circuit City salesman go on and on about a product. It's meaningless.
- jynweythek, on 09/17/2008, -17/+107okay, Leopard may be awesome, but PC magazine is *****. I got a free trial subscription and it's not even worth the time it takes to toss it in the garbage.
- imightbewrong, on 11/03/2007, -42/+104if its the best ever he should have given it a 5/5
- statikuz, on 11/03/2007, -19/+76"Leopard still has a generous share of first-version glitches, some of which are merely annoying, and others of which can cause serious problems for anyone upgrading an existing system. Finally, Leopard is extravagantly overdressed for the jobs that it's designed to do. Don't get me wrong, I really like it but the pervasive eye-candy starts out looking dazzling can become distracting."
And the best part: "Leopard worked almost perfectly on a shiny new iMac that Apple lent me for a week." - ddcrandall, on 11/03/2007, -79/+135Sorry, but ignoring "for the vast majority of consumers" in your headline makes this kind of misleading. It sounds like he isn't including Linux or other non-mainstream operating systems. Leopard is my primary OS and I love it, but I think you took his comments a bit out of context.
- chris8535, on 11/03/2007, -15/+65He's right, this is the magazine that tried to censor the "10 things we hate about Apple" article because it would hurt their ad revenue.
- apzdsx, on 10/31/2007, -12/+514.499999~ = 4.5
- ArthurArchnix, on 11/03/2007, -0/+37As an Ubuntu user, I accept your apology, and offer my own in return.
- DeviantDragon, on 11/03/2007, -7/+42A 4.5 is enough to be the best if every other OS to that point had received a 4.499999~... out of 5.
- ibnabouna, on 11/03/2007, -14/+46I agree with the review. Mac OS X Leopard is an incredible feat of software engineering for the masses. I am glad I switched to Macs from the Windows world a long time ago.
- mstrebe, on 11/03/2007, -12/+44This was PC Magazine. Not Mac magazine. They sell all brands of computers, and by far the larger share of their advertisers and subscribers are in the Windows market.
- fkr3, on 11/03/2007, -1/+29Googling things in Yahoo search was funnier.
- Sonic84, on 11/03/2007, -8/+35hmmm, why is PC world touting the mac so much lately? I'm all for it, but it just seems weird......
- monkeyrun, on 11/03/2007, -5/+32Some people do feel obligated to flame any Apple related thread.
It's like they couldn't care less about Apple, but they can't stop themselves from talking about it. - zmjone2992, on 11/03/2007, -5/+30then it would have been the "perfect" os. To be the best it just has to be rated higher then anything else.
- valentinoracing, on 11/03/2007, -8/+32Is it a fair statement to say, half the people that bash Apple Products have never owned one, used one for long periods of time, or even used one at all?? I bashed macs growing up until i got one as a Christmas gift. I mean, i pay homage to my PC, but I enjoy doing the things i do better on my mac.
- johnny222, on 11/01/2007, -3/+26Thank you for proving his point.
- Invalice, on 11/03/2007, -2/+24i think leopard is good but if you used tiger its only 'meh'
if you make the switch between windows and tiger/leopard then you will think 'woah' - SupaDawg, on 11/03/2007, -7/+29I'm waiting to see the upcoming install disks from the OSX86 community. Uphuck is rumored to be working on a solid bootable Leopard disk with the SSE2 and AMD patches. If this drops within the next week as is rumored i shall be a happy nerd. That's not to say i don't like vista. I've grown to quite enjoy the experience vista offers... But i'd love to check out the giant hype surrounding Leopard. It looks pretty damn good. Quite possibly Dual-Boot worthy.
- 0xFEEDFACE, on 11/03/2007, -6/+25I've only been using Leopard for a short amount of time, but I must say: of all the version of OS X I've used (from Rhapsody DR1 on), Leopard is far and away the best at staying responsive under load. It looks like all the work that Apple put into making OS X highly-threaded has payed off -- I almost feel like I'm on a BeBox (but not quite ;-) ).
I'm also noticing that it seems a lot more stable than Tiger. That's not to say that Tiger was unstable -- but with 10.4, I did have some of Apple's apps "unexpectedly quit" a couple times (esp Mail.app when dealing with IMAP.) With Leopard, I have yet to see any program crash (let alone the OS.) - Iwantawii, on 11/03/2007, -0/+17In my experience they "Google" things using MSN search field, from the toolbar of course. The field just so convenient and big right there in it's 800x600 glory.
- MacParrot, on 10/31/2007, -0/+17PC Magazine is about computers? That's just crazy talk!
- MWeather, on 10/31/2007, -6/+22"I consider both SysV and BSD derivatives to be real Unix."
You can consider DOS to be Unix if you want, that doesn't make it so. - heinousjay, on 11/01/2007, -5/+21On the other hand, no one is afraid of the Mac community. The worst you have to offer is slightly snide comments delivered in a mock-exasperated tone.
- Lancer383, on 11/01/2007, -0/+16MATH FIGHT!!!!!!
- randomc0de, on 11/04/2007, -19/+35OS X just implements to Posix standard. It's based on BSD with the Mach microkernel. There's no SysV code in either OS X or Linux (SysV is essentially the last real Unix). Linux is probably a better OS, certainly from an enterprise standpoint. Keep in mind that the interface (Cocoa for OS X, KDE, Gnome, Fluxbox, Metacity, etc... for Linux) is separate from the OS. You could run Cocoa on Linux if the code was there. Before you open your mouth again, keep in mind there are more Linux installs in the world than OS X installs, it just depends where you look.
- nirav72, on 11/03/2007, -1/+16technically you could consider the OSX port for the iphone as an embedded OS.
- MacParrot, on 11/03/2007, -3/+18No one HAS to like OS X. It's a preference. There are plenty of people (obviously) that prefer Windows. Go in peace.
- potifar, on 11/03/2007, -1/+16Mac OS X conforms with the Single UNIX Specification. It's UNIX.
- heinousjay, on 10/31/2007, -0/+15Or maybe since Macs are PCs (personal computers, get it) they're just doing decent journalism and covering a story very near to their mission.
Nah, couldn't be that, it's too simple. Has to be something nefarious. - drinkycrow, on 10/31/2007, -7/+22I blame the Russian judges
- mrBitch, on 11/03/2007, -1/+14True, you should be comparing KDE and Gnome to Aqua, not OSX ( but then - you don't really know what you are talking about ).
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -45/+58Exactly how can Linux possibly compare to OS X, which is a real Unix? Linux is by definition a reverse-engineered Unix. There is no comparison here. The OS X user interface is light years beyond what KDE, Gnome, or other GUI manager can offer. And before you open your mouth, I use Red Hat professionally as a software engineer, and I've used more variants of Unix than I have fingers.
- Tippis, on 10/31/2007, -0/+13Depends on the version.
Some BSDs are actual UNIXes, others are only unix-like
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Dis ... - inactive, on 10/31/2007, -4/+16They're where Microsoft gets all it's ideas.
- stupidverizon, on 10/31/2007, -2/+14I hate Apple as well but you're ***** retarded. Uncheck the Apple category in your user preferences if you don't want to see it and move on with your life. Just the fact that you don't do that, and go one posting hateful comments in a bunch of Apple submissions means you don't have anything better to do. You're no better than a fanboy, you're simply an Apple fanboy's polar opposite. I would pick apart your post and point out how damn hypocritical you are ("get a life" "don't like any real opinions") but I have better things to procrastinate with.
- timjim31, on 10/31/2007, -1/+12"And before you take that ***** out of your mouth, don't; it looks better on you with it in."
Are you 12? - inactive, on 11/03/2007, -1/+12People seem to misinterpret the PC in PC Magazine. It stands for Personal Computers. That covers everything, not just Windows machines.
- happycat, on 11/03/2007, -3/+14After using a Mac for a few weeks you not only see how good OSX is, but also you learn just how bad windows really is. Windows really seems clunky and you really notice how all parts of it were designed by separate teams and just at the end they decided to make the different components try to work together. And the speed. For general use, my core2 mac mini with 512 MB actually feels faster than windows does on a 5000XP with 2GB.
And, sure, there can be people who wont like it, but generally anyone who says they hate OSX hasn't used it for more than a few minutes here and there. They say "Mac's suck" and I'll ask "why", and they'll say "Cause windows rocks" or "They just suck" - Angostura, on 11/01/2007, -0/+10I believe the poster was employing what is known in the trade a 'humor'.
... although I suppose it is possible that he actually does burn PC users at the stake. - sleepwalkers, on 10/31/2007, -1/+11No, I'm going to digg you down because you described yourself as hating the exact thing you just described yourself as: An unflinching zealot who bases most of his/her opinion in something they deem as "reality," but couldn't be any further from the truth. Before you come back with a retort like "Go suck some more *****, Apple fanboy" I'm going to go ahead and tell you that I use all three operating systems (with dedicated boxes for each) and think all three are great for different types of people.
Also, calling people "fanboy fags" and "corporate ***** suckers" isn't going to win any hearts. Just a tip. - Goobernutz, on 11/01/2007, -1/+11Zing!
- zweben, on 10/31/2007, -4/+13How would writing a review biased towards Apple help their sales at all? They sell Macs and PCs. If they convert a customer from Windows to Mac OS, and from PC hardware to Apple hardware, they're selling the same number of computers.
By your logic, wouldn't their Windows reviews also be biased towards Windows? If so, it'll balance out. - Kempachi, on 10/31/2007, -2/+11"Propeller-heads with IT know-how will no doubt hold up Linux as the better choice, and Vista has its devotees as well(and will probably have more when SP1 is widely available), but, for the average user, Leopard is the most polished and easiest to use OS I've tested."
RTFA, moran :p - DarkenKO, on 11/03/2007, -14/+23Mac is great, however burried for inaccurate headline... the real title should be "by far the best operating system ever written for the vast majority of consumers"
emphasis on For the Vast Majority... meaning its not the best system ever written, only the best system written when you are looking at the general public... - JustinPM, on 10/31/2007, -8/+16+1 for awesome use of suckfest
- mcnab32, on 10/31/2007, -1/+9dugg for low resolution glory
- xixor, on 11/03/2007, -4/+12I just got a mac, I gotta say, after using Tiger for a few weeks, and now Leopard for a few days, I am impressed. I would step out on a limb and say that if Leopard is a candidate for 'best OS ever', then Tiger is definitely in the running for second best OS ever.
