- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24If someone posted a web page about taking a new creative mp3 player out of the box, everyone would call it lame. But when it is an old apple mp3 player in a new color, then it is news.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11So why can't they make black ports and a black sleeve for the black iPod!?
- thedonga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10where the f*** are the black earbuds???
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The black back is especially sleek. I like the pic with the two side by side, and the black back is definitely a hit.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I like the black sleeve, and the black anodization!
- cbags, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Why is it news when a huge retail unit like apple releases the same product...in a different color.
Seriously...ooo0000ooooo a black laptop!
oooooo000o0ooo a black iPod. - Fraghappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That's just because Apple--like it or not--has a higher marketshare in the MP3 player market. More people own iPods, therefore more people want to hear about iPods. I'm not trying to argue it's fair, but it's the way things are.
- Enitime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If they didn't have white earbuds people who pass them on the street wouldn't know they had an iPod. Both the manufacturer and most of the buyers of the iPod want everyone to know what they have.
Like T-shirts with enormous Hilfiger logos on them. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12WOW opening & Unpacking a new iPod??? I just jizzed my pants from the excitement
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4EDIT: You beat me to it Enitime...
That is the question we have been asking since the dawn of the black iPod.
If you are listening to an iPod, and you have it in your pocket, how are people supposed to know that you are listening to a genuine iPod and not some cheap wal-mart flash player? The white earbuds, that's how. Apple knows that their white earbuds are easily recognizable and they have become almost a trademark. I doubt they'll make them in any other color any time soon. If at all. - BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Quick way to fortune-
route 1 - cure disease or at least get darn close to it
route 2 - make an updated ipod or ipod case, ipod protector etc
Of course, I paid like $35 for some fancy rubber sleeve at the Apple store, so I'm not putting anyone down here, just making an obersvation. - sexypixels, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Apple just knows good design...industrial, packaging, advertising.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the white stripes suck even more than U2
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I never understood the fanboyizm of opening up a new Apple product and posting about it. Or when a new Apple product hits shelves and immediatly someone has disected it.
Being an Apple owner myself I guess it's just because Apple presents their products in such a professional way. When I got my G5 PowerMac it was packaged with such attention to detail that it sorta felt like an event opening it up. Like opening that sleek silver suitcase with the custom foam surrounding this expensive toy. You don't get that when you open a Dell or other expensive item. Usually manuals or accessories dump out along w/the product.
As for disecting Apple products, well, they seem to be put together a little more interestingly than you're avg PC counterpart. I love the look of the inside of my G5. Not a wire in site. - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Wooo... This is exciting.
Pictures of a black iPod in a black box taken over a black background. - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Black earbuds as well.
- butchlink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I don't know a single person who listens to U2. They should put the red click wheel on a white iPod and release it as "The White Stripes Special Edition."
- Enitime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"That's just because Apple--like it or not--has a higher marketshare in the MP3 player market."
That's not why. Apple computers get the same treatment. I just think a lot of people like the look of Apple products. - demesisx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9oh man, that made my day...and I am having a particularly bad day.
- Hungryhaney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What? No way they are that old.
- tutivlahos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Use the reply button. Sorry, i am having a bad day too.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, sir, I would have you take a look at this picture if you think that is true...
It is of an iPod that has been "brushed" (someone Scotch Bright padded the back) and all the laser etching is still visible.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimyounkin/6355711/in/set-158675/ - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I say apple should have a poll or something for the next special edition iPod... I want an AC/DC "Special Edition" iPod that is Black and White(Color sceme, not Screen :p).
- cnt2infinity, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I doubt those autographed signatures on the back will be recognized once it goes through its scratching phase.
- vandewax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you get my digg for that comment.
yet I have never had so much fun disliking u2. - devolved, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, it's the new Hotblack Desiato edition!
Obscure Reference Check ... 1, 2 ... 1, 2 ... is this thing on? - vandewax, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8"to bad u2 sucks balls"
Thank you, I too am having a bad day.
To know that more people out there feel the way I do makes it much better. - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is ridiculous. I love Apple, but even I think this is insane. Why did someone even think this warranted a submission? NO DIGG.....
and if I see the word fanboy or fanboi one more time, I'm going to vomit. - Enitime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like opening-and-unpacking photo sets. They generally show you a lot more than the glossy touched-up press photos you normally get.
Extra points for having a side-by-side comparison with the previous generation product. I'd like that in ALL reviews. - Tonyisbad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm going to have to agree with Skoles above me, i like my black ipod video as much as the next guy, its not really a big deal for me when apple releases a new product and everyone rushes to get one. it took me 3 months just to get my hands on a video ipod, but that is because i wait for some poor sap on eBay to buy my previous ipod via an auction during the Xmas rush to do my ipod upgrades for free. anyway back to my point here, apple just knows how to present a product, that product may not be the best on the market or even the cheapest but they know how to sell it to the public, and that's what matters in today's free market. Apple builds hype offers something new about the product that makes you feel the previous one just now sucks in comparison and compels you to get the latest and greatest, my point will be proved later this year when gen 2 of the nano comes out and gen 6 of the ipod (or finally that true wide-screen ipod comes out).
Also you can't deny that apple doesn't know a thing about aesthetics, i look at my ipod next to my friends previous zen mp3 player and the ipod wins on pure sexiness alone. The same can be said of their line of notebooks, those things are freaking drop dead gorgeous compared to dell, acer, HP, gateway, etc etc. I like the look of the books but i would never buy one simply because I'm a gamer and apples don't do games yet. But if some PC company came out with a laptop/desktop case that looked as good as apple and performed as well as a IBM-comp. i would buy one like that... - mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Because they want to charge you more for that, silly!
- markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh come ON. Everyone is a fanboy of SOMETHING. Take for example the free vista beta, the Linux boys were on that like flies to cow dung. The only thing more annoying than the fanboys are the people who bitch about fanboys... and third on the list people like me who bitch about everything. (Yea, it's been a bad day too...)
- gukid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Agreed. All they have to do is record a single and it buries everything else on the radio. Come on U2, you can stop now.
- eljaysun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6... I like U2. :(
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here's another side-by-side comparison... This is the regular 4G iPod with the 4G iPod Gallagher Special Edition
http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/3597/gallagheripod0oa.jpg - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Um, how can they "charge me more for that" when they don't give me the option of black ports? I'm not buying a U2 iPod. I don't want one. But I do want black ports. They aren't available, So explain how they plan on charging more for that?
And use the reply button, it's there for a reason. - mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2How about a Rolling Stones iPod, made of decryped flesh and bones.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6the real question: why is this on the front page?
oh...nevermind, apple fanboys is the majority of digg readers.
reported as lame. - gfors, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i have the g3 version of that...buggy and it scratches WAY too easy
- acura86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1IPODs are getting too fashion based now, I just wanna hear my music on a small device, small enough that it doesn't make a bulge in my pocket. i don't care if it has a picture of cartman's mom as a cover, as long as its small and discrete, and maybe wireless headphones ;-)
- chamblah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=11worst
- gfors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/
(minus the wireless headphones....for now) - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's fine if you like ipods and buy ipods or whatever, but some guy taking something out of a box is BORING, no matter who made the box.
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Because they know (from the 80's swatch trends) that the fanboys & fangirls will consider buying another one if a different color is available (to match their dresses).
Appearance is the big selling point for Apple. Looks over content. (Kinda like Paris Hilton)
...
"Oh jeez!" *Ducks & covers* - markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This comments section is turning into a dig up dig down war... thats pretty freakin' funny
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They've GOT to be white....
I mean, how else are the muggers going to know you have an iPod and not an iRiver?!? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Decrypted flesh and bones?
- liveinabin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That is not doing the image of the iPod any good at all. Apple stuff has always had a nice balance of styling and functionality. This is tipping too far towards style (if you can call U2 stylish).
I like the black bits though.
Why can't we have a black iPod with a black wheel and a white iPod with a white wheel? I love my 3G iPod, it looks so minimal.
Haha. Just read the above post - U2 invented rock? My god, I hope you were joking. - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1iLounge sucks now, IMO. When it was iPodlounge it still did mac news. Just not as often. And it was usually a good read. Now its just like every other site trying to squish every mac-related thing into 1 website... I'm so tired of "Apple" being considerd 1 subject.
