- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -10/+40I love it!
Developer: Here's some free software that'll save you a ton of money.
Mac User: No thanks, it looks like poo.
Developer: But it'll perform the same functions!
Mac User: Hmm, but it really doesn't go with my desktop. Does it come in Aqua?
Developer: Ugh... - gfw123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32I use OO on linux, but I have really warmed up to Pages and Keynote. If they do come out with a spreadsheet as part of the next iWork, I will probably just stick with that. It does cost money, but I just love the integration and ease of use. OO is just too much like MS office compared to iWork. All MS and MS-like software leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Not knocking OO at all, again I use it on linux, along with MS office on my windoze box. - will592, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33How about,
Developer: Here's some free software that'll save you a ton of money.
Mac User: Why does it look and behave differently than every other Mac app, even MS Office?
Developer: Because it's free and the developers don't care if it follows the same guidelines as all other Mac software.
Mac User: I'd love to try it, but I am used to all of the buttons and menus in all of my apps behaving the same sort of way. How come Microsoft, who seems to hate everything Macintosh, can follow the same patterns as all other mac apps but this free software provider can't?
Developer: It's free!
Mac User: But all of my other free software uses the same pattern? Don't the developers care about my ability to use their software?
Developer: It's free! Why are you complaining! Just change your shop over to our software ... you'll save so much money!
Mac User: Well it's a big investment in time to train our people on your software since it's so different and we're worried about an apparent lack of commitment to the platform since you don't seem to care too much about integration.
Developer: It's free! - chad78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28In the meantime, Mac users who want a *TRUE* Mac-Native experience (ie - proper menus, no X11, Aqua, and everything) - don't have to wait. NeoOffice ( http://www.neooffice.org/ ) has been around for years - and they are now completely Aquafied.
- alanp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29I'm sorry but this isn't news.
Neooffice has been THE defect OO for OS/X and now uses NATIVE menus, dialogues etc, and has done for over 1 month.
See : http://www.neooffice.org/
The OO guys are too up their own asses to assist with Neo, and they've ported OO to the Mac without X11 for YEARS now. And they get **** all recognition from the OO *****.
Now they think they can come along and show what Neo office did years ago (i.e run without X11) ? Sorry guys, you're WAY too far behind
Give Pat and co the credit they deserve. - ascheinberg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Nothing. NeoOffice looks like it's going to be 100 times more "native" than this app.
- bluegecko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I'm not trying to downplay what the developers have accomplished--getting OpenOffice using Quartz instead of X as a back-end has, I've no doubt, been a tremendous effort--but if the screenshots are anything to go by, I wouldn't say that OpenOffice "will work just like any other native OS X-native [sic] application." It's still drawing custom widgets that don't even look vaguely like Aqua, the document proxy is missing from all the title bars, and I'm very willing to bet that it doesn't use any standard OS X dialogs (print, save, open, etc.). I think it'll be awhile before OpenOffice truly looks like a native application on OS X, and I think you're actually doing OO a disservice by advertising it that way before it's ready.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Ironic that gay porn sites are geared towards the Windows crowd. Go figure.
- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Screenshots of it running natively can be found here:
http://eric.bachard.free.fr/news/
Peace - bmw@, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I hafe to agree about Pages and Keynote -- both are bargains. And Keynote completely blows away PowerPoint for classy presentations.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I think you're mixing up "straight" with "*****".
- alanp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I'm sorry, something that doens't have native file or print dialogues isn't native.
Look at the roadmap for the truth to this.
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/timeline.html
Then compare the neo office native port of OO2 : http://www.neooffice.org/
Night and day. - gnomon, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20Mac User's Boss: Can I get the icon in cornflower blue?
- jnagel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10what does this mean for neooffice?
- bmw@, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10NeoOffice 2.0 Beta 3 is looking really good.
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9agnostic-C is a balanced mix of waspGodFearing-C and interracialGayMarriageFlagBurning-C.
- flyingfred0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It *is* an open source project. Advertising it before it's ready is a good way to get people using it and hopefully reporting bugs.
It still needs lots of effort to make it usable in a way that compares with most Mac applications (even Microsoft Office), but it is a definite improvement above running it under X or using NeoOffice. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12your dumbass is unable to recognise satire
- wqwert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Woot! Quitting x11 before quitting OO was problematic because it prompted document auto-recovery. Also, NeoOffice has been good, but was always a little behind.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6to != too
Sorry, that bothers me.
However, you did make a fantastic point. - drcforbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Attributes that make it nearly identical to MS Office.
- Po0py, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Runs like a turtle on my g4 iBook.
Thats why. - noripcord7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Probably stating the obvious, but is there still a market for NeoOffice?
- McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You know, it would be a pretty good idea for Mac developers to branch off OpenOffice into something like MacOffice, where it conforms to interface guidelines and can integrate some of OS X's more powerful features.
- machx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I much prefeer NeoOffice myself
The new version of OpenOffice doesn't look native to anything and has sort of an odd look to it. Also Im trying to figure out why they have 3 about boxes open ( http://eric.bachard.free.fr/mac/aquavcl/screenshots/funny_29august/funny_about_29august06.jpg )
Seriously NeoOffice is awesome and it getting better and better especially recently, I don't understand why the OpenOffice guys just didn't help the NeoOffice team. As soon as the NeoOffice people implement some better icons it'll look virtually like a native Mac app.
Until they provide some compelling case for whats special about this version I'll keep to NeoOffice - regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'll wait and see; we'll see if OpenOffice or NeoOffice is the champ on OS X. Right now I'm using Neo just 'coz OpenOffice (X11) on OS X runs like poo. Well, they both run like and look like poo, but NeoOffice comes with 10% less poo.
- morphie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"and will work just like any other OS X-native application"
Well, that's a bold statement. The menu behaves in an OSX-way, but that's about it. It doesn't come near any design of Cocoa-based GUI's. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"You know, it would be a pretty good idea for Mac developers to branch off OpenOffice into something like MacOffice"
I suggest you look up the NeoOffice website where they are doing just that. - scooterfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Neo office is NOT written in Java. It is written in agnostic C.
Small portions are java - file dialogues, etc, but it was *never* entirely written in java. - ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9http://eric.bachard.free.fr/mac/aquavcl/screenshots/funny_29august/funny_about_29august06.jpg
Direct Link to That guys screen shot - nerd05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4NeoOffice is already Aqua native, albeit in beta form. It's sweet. Here's a link:
http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/index.php
It kind of already looks better than OoO, imho - Po0py, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Fairly old news but its nice to see that its release is just around the corner. I, for one, cannot wait to get rid of NeoOffice.
- Po0py, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It didn't run to good slower macs. And it looked butt ugly with a windows classic style interface.
This new app is supposed to change all that. Therefore it will be much more easier to use. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All I need is 100% guaranteed file compatibility (both ways) with the latest MS Office. Everything else is negotiable. Anything less is useless (to me).
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Didn't the developers of Neooffice said that a cocoa port of openoffice is impossible. thats why they went for java.
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why is that?
- gruvsf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know, reading these comments regarding NeoOffice versus OO, it seem like the complaints are realy lame. Okay, it doesn't have Aqua, or it's not native, but isn't it a good thing that you have such variety to choose from? I mean, give me a f*cking break. I am just happy to see that with OO on Mac, we will soon be able to to break the control of MS on "productivity apps" in 99% of workplaces. Soon, in a few years, I am hoping that poeple will say "eww...Windows? You are still using that old ass piece of software? How 20th century!"
- gvibe06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bah! Neo Office 2.0 Beta 3 is fine and they've been working on this a lot longer than the guy in this article. The way that article is written its like they were the first to do it ... NOT!
Anyway .. NeoOffice is coming along. Just like any new app it will be buggy at first. But at least I have a free office app that doesn't require X11 to run on my MacBook. - plasticated, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Appreciated of course, but still looks fugly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8The toolbars are not native, it contains portions in java, it freaks when you resize the window, The status bar looks like it came right off Windows.
OOo will never be a 'true' mac app. Pages is a true mac app because it's designed as such. OOo will continue to be a mear shadow of even MSO:Mac. - tvashtar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure what it'll be like on the Mac but I think Office 2007 will change a lot of people's minds. Up to now I've use Office 97 and OpenOffice (simply because Office 2003 et al always seemed to be utter bloatware), but 2007 is different, the interface is vastly improved and the program as a whole is, quite simply, very good.I've been using the beta for a while now and have really grown to like it.
- TheZorch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love OpenOffice. I started using it about four years and never went back to MS Office. And, I don't intend to switch back ever.
I'm going to be getting an Intel iMac soon. Hearing this just gives me yet another reason to switch to Apple. - neatflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did you mean objective C? I couldnt find anything about a language called "agnostic c".
- webpoet73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I changed my icons in NeoOffice and they look better. I think they are called "Crystal." Not the best but definitely better than the default icons.
I, too, would consider iWork if it has the rumored spreadsheet app. I have no use for Keynote. I just need a good word processor and a good spreadsheet. NeoOffice has worked pretty well so far, though. - fungifred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is not a True Mac Application. It is not using the standard toolbar, probably does not support many of the common drag and drops and all the other things that make an App a True Mac App. The biggest thing is that the icon is terribly ugly, someone with some graphic design skills needs to do something about that.
- bsharitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well it looks like it'll still be a while before OpenOffice.org is truely Mac native. Sure it uses Quartz now, and has an Aqua looking theme, but it is far from behaving like a good Mac application. While NeoOffice is still far from perfect in this area as well, it's well ahead of this particular effort by OpenOffice.org.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Until there's a Universal version of Office, this may replace the slow ass Rosetta Office
- cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3NeoOffice is here to stay I guess, but still nice to see OpenOffice do this natively.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the official timeline: Something workable as alpha by January or Feburay 2007.
Go get NeoOffice. - poofyhairguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@machx
Here is how to have a nice looking NeoOffice. Enjoy!
