- prionic6, on 10/29/2007, -1/+64What I really need is the reverse function of this.
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46Agh, "features" not "feature". My bad.
- bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29In case you don't want to read the full description, here's what summarize did to it:
It is a very self-explanatory feature that can be found in the services menu, which is itself a very underused part of OS X. - iching, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Amazing didn't know it existed, Thank You.
here is what it looks like using the summary version of the article vs.
the original blog for those that do not have a Mac
SUMMARY:
It is a very self-explanatory feature that can be found in the services menu, which is itself a very underused part of OS X. What it does is it takes an selection of text and generates a very precise summary of the text.
...Highlight the text that you want to summarize and click the program name you are using in the menu bar.
...Navigate down to the services selection, and in there you will find “Summarize”.
...After you click it, a window will instantly pop open with your summary in there.
...This is an awesome feature if you want to read a long article but don’t have a ton of time.
...Tip: If the application you are using doesn’t support services, all you have to do is copy the text into a TextEdit (if you never use this, just search for it in Spotlight) document and then summarize it.

I wish you hadn't quit the Bible.
Fortunately for all, I did it and here it is:
"and God sayeth unto thee, Stop that, you'll go blind." - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25"In word, select autosummarize."
Then it's a Word-only feature, not a Windows feature. In OS X, it's a system-wide feature (for every Cocoa apps), just like spell-checking. Also, it's available since Mac OS 7.5.x. - socokid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Actually, Mac OS has been doing this since 7.5... far before any Word implementation.
- camkerr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18@joeshlub "Do you really think a bit of code will reduce an page into something useful?"
I've tried it and it works pretty well. I was little skeptical at first too, but I found that its actually very accurate. It basically summarizes the most important/unique parts of the text. I am impressed. - Slvgx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Word is a single application, Summarize is a system wide feature in OS X, big difference.
- willi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Firefox is not a Cocoa app.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14maybe it's nice in office, but it's also nice to have in my web browser, email app bla bla bla bla bla without having to copy the text, launch office, paste into word and then do it.
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Plus, auto summarize is painfully inaccurate...
- mwosh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I used summarize to read that article.
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11A while back I was showing this feature to a friend of mine and summarized a few large texts, here are some fun ones:
The US Constitution:
Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.

Full Text of Hamlet:
It shall do well: but yet do I believe The origin and commencement of his grief Sprung from neglected love. How now, Ophelia! You need not tell us what Lord Hamlet said; We heard it all. My lord, do as you please; But, if you hold it fit, after the play Let his queen mother all alone entreat him To show his grief: let her be round with him; And I'll be placed, so please you, in the ear Of all their conference. If she find him not, To England send him, or confine him where Your wisdom best shall think.
LAERTES The devil take thy soul!
It is indifferent cold, my lord, indeed.

I'll let you figure out the source of this one (the full book was summarized):
Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-tohand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

I tried the full bible, but it took to long, I quit after about an hour. - wqwert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Automatic CS Paper Generator
http://pdos.csail.mit.edu/scigen/#generate - typographics, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10i used summarize on both your replies. it said you're a tool
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Good thinking - maybe in Leopard.
- fulldecent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Note, this will not work from firefox, you will have to copy the text into textedit first.
- caroline1985, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This was featured on MacBreak (the video version) a few weeks ago, it is very handy though..
- camkerr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8http://www.twit.tv/mb62 is the episode of MacBreak showing how it works.
- abrooks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10OS X has been doing it for just as long as Word.
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you don't get it, I'm sure actually reading the article will help you
- philomatic, on 02/08/2009, -1/+8Summarize got me through college!
- Squidly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Try selecting some text before looking for "summarize".
- phoucault, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6WOW! thankyou for showing this, i am amazed.
- N1XUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6macbreak coveredd this a few weeks ago, very smart bit of coding
- soccernamlak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Summary of the article according to summarize:
3. Navigate down to the services selection, and in there you will find “Summarize”. - bluechocobo42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8For Office 2007:
The Round button at the top->Word Options->Customize.
Up at top where it says "Popular Commands" change it to "Commands not in the Ribbon".
Scroll down to "AutoSummary Tools", and then add it to the quick access toolbar. There it is. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Summerize also allows for how much you want to summerize with a drag bar. It also has a paragraphs button (for longer entries?). This is a slick tool that I didn't know existed.
- obezyana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Did you reselect the text after pasting it? Summarize doesn't work unless the text is selected.
- eastinlet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I found that accidentally, and it's really handy when needing to condense reports or create a summation. Amazingly effective.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4OS X's most consice summary of the Macbeth:
Within this hour at most I will advise you where to plant yourselves, Acquaint you with the perfect spy o' the time, The moment on't; fort must be done tonight And something from the palace (always thought That I require a clearness); and with him- To leave no rubs nor botches in the work- Fleance his son, that keeps him company, Whose absence is no less material to me Than is his father's, must embrace the fate Of that dark hour.
... it just picked a spot in the middle-- oh well :) ... or maybe it knows something I don't? - enivid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Works on Camino, I wish it would actually summarize in the main window (web page).
- TrueJournals, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Doing 50% of the original text in Word 2003:
One of the most hidden, yet very valuable features in Mac OS X is “Summarize”. What it does is it takes an selection of text and generates a very precise summary of the text. 1. Open the program that holds the text you would like to summarize (it doesn’t work on some programs, it works best on Mac programs like Safari, etc., but read below for a tip on how to make it work with any text)
2. Highlight the text that you want to summarize and click the program name you are using in the menu bar.
3. Navigate down to the services selection, and in there you will find “Summarize”.
It is also a great feature and tool for students who have long online reading assignments. It is amazing how accurate this summary actually is. Enjoy… - superdigg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10what? where is it in Windows? I've never heard of it, and I'd like it a lot!
- Freps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Amen to that! Now that would be some serious technology.
- TravisG5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just tried the first book of the bible, the one where creation is described.
_________
2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had; Put forth I pray thee thy hand under my hand, and I will make thee swear before the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son, of the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I dwell; but thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
_________
My conclusion: OS X believes in evolution. - bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It only works in cocoa applications. It should work in TextEdit though... I haven't tried it, but seeing as it isn't a proprietary application, it should take full advantage of the OS. I'll look into it though.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Windows does not have this feature. Not even Vista.
- heiesuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanx a lot, I had never used it before.
- cosmok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2never used it before, very neat!
- Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had no idea that was in there.
The "services" menu is nice, but it's clunky to get to (IMO).
So i hardly ever look at it.
Too much tunneling to get in there. - scrag10, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5most under used feature of MSword is Summarize.
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks to system integrated summarise, Apple mail.app has one of the most advanced antispam filters on planet which can even figure out pump/dump spam.
I remember it was mentioned as being used in Apple mail.app for anti spam but of course Apple didn't get in too much detail. I think that is why Apple mail spam filter is never impressed with random words spammers use to make their mail unique (!). - scifimax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tried this with Windows Vista for Dummies and here's what I got:
"A reference for the rest of the idiots among us." - shinda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know of a *nix equivalent?
- PimmsONE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2very very impressed did not know about this before! loving mac even more
- andy78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THIS WORKS!!!! I selected the article and the comments and hit summarize, and basically it deleted all the useless comments... Commenting systems are like backseat writers. Too cool for school, too smart to ***** up, but too pussy to try to write their own blog... go us. we rule!!
- jeremy66158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1obezyana Thanks, you got it...duh...read carefully!
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The idea behind services is: They are available to ANY application. For example if you quickly code a simple text editor, compile it, it will have summarise service/option.
