- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33The only advantages this has over the Xbox 360:
1) A better interface for buying and viewing content (easily fixed with a free firmware update from Microsoft)
2) Larger selection of content to buy (Microsoft will catch up over time)
3) It's a bit cheaper (though think about all the extra stuff you get with the 360, like, you know, next-gen gaming)
The fact that the Xbox 360 will soon have IPTV service (something that Apple TV will not have, according to the announced specs) makes Xbox 360 the superior platform - by far.
Having said that, I'm glad that they made this product. It forces Microsoft to ramp up their development for the Xbox 360, and in the end consumers will win. - bodger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I'm underwhelmed by the Apple TV, probably because I've been running Xbox Media Center for so long. The phone on the other hand looks awesome....
- spain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Thanks for the story. I didn't know that the official page for Apple was Apple.com.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25$O if you use a magically invisible free capture card.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Thats what makes this non-news. Take a look I use an Apple logo for an Avatar and even I know that the 360 has a real technical advantage over this Apple offering. At least it will when they release the iptv feature to all owners with hard drives.
- telepathetic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Bummer, no DVR as far as I can tell...
- mugdecoffee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19And home much did the box to run MythTV cost? $500 or more? Does it have a remote?
- Sargasso_C, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17"$O if you use a magically invisible free capture card."
And if you can find the linux drivers for that mythical free capture card. - danakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Having run a media center PC for almost a year now, the Apple TV doesn't do much to impress me. With my media pc, I can record live tv, stream any file from any computer on our network, browse the internet, and even play games. Apple TV doesn't really deliver that.
However, the iPhone is a winner, through and through. - GodofPoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Ill stick with my XBMC.
Streaming video box, wow, what a concept THANKS APPLE!
-next - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Or digg.com today
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I too have an xbmc but my only gripe with it is that there is no HDMI or digital audio. The xbox 360 looks more promising than apple tv in my book.
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Hey, I'm a MAC user and fan. I think without a DVR this lacks a huge draw. Yes, it can stream from your computer but I still have to DVR from my computer which kinda sucks. I want a unit I can leave on all the time to do my DVR duties. :(
- dice13, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14No Divx/Xvid support....need I say more?
- kolywater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10why are these two getting dugg down? im a hardcore mac fan, but without a dvr its just a (very pretty) $299 wireless receiver.
i would have bought an apple tv if it had some dvr capabilities (even just a component input!). the interface and small form factor design are killer. - TehJlo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Now THAT'S a slick website!
But... why is it coupled alongside the iPod? - MikeFromAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Which is exactly why I stopped buying media from the iTunes store when the broke jhymn.
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Not forgetting the UK! :D http://www.apple.com/uk/appletv/
- largobargo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12It's just a $300 media extender, there are a lot of better options out there with much more functionality.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"they can't do HD"
VGA can. - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I disagree. Grab a TV tuner for your computer for ~$100 with eyeTV you can automatically sink your recorded movies to you Apple TV. I would prefer to have them recorded on to my computer. My computer is where I acquire content my TV is where I consume it.
- kdbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Its lame without a DVR. If it had a DVR then it would be great.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7On the 360 vs. Apple TV debate everyone should remember a few things:
1) Not everyone is interested in gaming. The 360 is total overkill for someone like my parents who just want to listen to their iTunes purchased music on the living room sound system.
2) The 360 market place doesn't even remotely compare to iTunes right now in terms of selection.
3) No wireless on the 360 out of the box. You gotta spend an extra $100 to get B/G. So, in total, you're comparing a $299 Apple TV to a $500 Xbox 360 (and it only has 20GB of space)
4) The 360 is a big, loud box that consumes 4x the power (200w vs 50w) as the Apple TV. - eurleif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+640 GB seems a bit small to me for a device like this, especially since it's the only option available. I hope they plan to add another model with a bigger drive.
- jtherrien, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Sorry, my xbox 360 already does everything the AppleTV does- and has for a year! Apple was a year too late on this one.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You people have to think like the MythTV front-end/back-end model way of doing things and not the all in one PVR concept of old.
1) Connect HDTV tuner to your mac mini (like my EyeTV Hyrbrid)
2) EyeTV automatically schedules, and records HDTV and pops them into iTunes
3) Connect iTV to your HDTV in the living room
4) Browse and watch the HDTV programs your back-end recorded for you
The cool thing is that this totally is like Myth where you could have MULTIPLE back ends, with one serving up HDTV recordings, another system serving up stuff like DVD rips, another system like your laptop serving up podcasts etc.
AND DONT FORGET that this might be able to become a MythTV front end display appliance.... Linux can already pretend to be a copy of iTunes and share out files over the network using DAAP. http://daap.sourceforge.net/ DAAP+MYTHTV+Apple iTV = **NICE** - dickybrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was pretty excited about this, but without CableCard support or at least one of the blue DVDs this is a tough sell for me
Maybe I'll need to pony up the cash for that Sony media center pc they showed at CES....oh well - rjpaez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why would people want to watch low-res video's on an HDTV?
- zenerdiode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@canyonblue
maybe you shouldn't have supported such a DRM-laden monopoly in the first place?
zombie - eagleswings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The problem is, we can't download TV shows OR Movies YET. Steve promised we'd be able to get movies this year and I was hoping he'd announce it today but nope. I want to get the content for this and to have the whole experience. I know I can rip or download movies / shows from other sources but I want the whole thing before I seriously consider getting one.
- diamondg14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5More promising if you have a PC, but Connect360 for mac only supports WMV right now.
- edgecurve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I use Macs at home and I have a wireless network (airport extreme and express). I think this unit would fit nicely into my setup IF it had A) DVR functionality and B) Didn't require media to be stored in iTunes. I have quite a few files on my Mac (external firewire drive) that I don't import to iTunes because I don't want to wait for hours converting them into a format it accepts. I would love to be able to just play the files on my TV like I can with Quicktime on the Mac. So at this point I don't think I'll be getting this. (I can't say the same thing about the iPhone though...drool worthy)
- diamondg14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Apple will update the iTunes store to have atleast some HD content, I just do not think it will be this year. So without hd content when this is actually available, it has absolutely no appeal to me. 640 x 480 just does not do it. There is very minimal 720p content out there for download right now, and what is has to be converted to h.264 (talk about a process) no one has any content that can make this useful, unless they can stand sub-dvd quality iTunes content.
Don't forget that it is not even capable of Dolby Digital 5.1, that is also a deal breaker! There better be a firmware upgrade. - 20miles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Because they can't do HD.
- wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4thats true
i hope it could be programmed to work with a universal remote - writerboyVSgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ok, so all I need is an iPhone, an AppleTV, an 40"+ HDTV, and a digital surround sound system.
Can you get like six grand for killing someone now a days? How about male prostitution? - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While I'd like to have one, there's no way I can justify paying more than $150 for this thing. I can see where people without an Xbox 360 would like this, but I'd rather save the money and download my content directly from the Live Marketplace and watch it since a lot of the stuff there is already in HD. Besides, I don't buy TV shows or Movies from iTunes and don't plan on doing so. I already have an HD DV-R through my cable company.
I would've liked to have seen Netflix partner up with Apple on this and allow you to extend your subscription to include downloadable movies right to the HD of the Apple TV. I'd glady pay $300 for that ability. - SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9The description made it sound like this has never been done before...
http://www.pvrwire.com/2006/11/30/alternatives-to-the-apple-itv/ - nhaas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4who cares?
- camsoft2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Quote From http://www.apple.com/uk/appletv/:
"Your computer is the centre of your digital life. Your TV is the centre of your entertainment life. But what if you want to watch music videos, movie trailers, video podcasts or photos on your TV? At £199 (UK) / €299 (Ireland) including VAT, Apple TV gives you more to watch on the big screen"
£200, to watch trailers and music videos, seems a little pricey for me, considering the main purpose of this device is to get your iTunes purchased content on to your TV, it sucks, cause there is no TV/Movie content available in the UK iTunes store. - wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4someone will figure out how to upgrade the hard drive, dont worry, it will happen
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sure it does. All 11n chips are backwards compatible with B/G. Intel also has a chipset that does A/B/G/N so that may be what is in the Apple TV box.
- futuredead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The real question, for me, is:
Can I stream my DVD collection, which I've ripped using MacTheRipper, to my TV.
Now that would make it worth the $299. - 20miles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@volatileacid
I am pretty sure he meant for the appletv's connection to your television set. - sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK. this is essentially a 40GB ipod with a TV interface and wireless communication. I think the price is about right when you look at it that way and it's a step in the right direction anyway. I predict the next version will have a larger drive and support games.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why do you say it can't do 5.1? It has a digital audio output...
- AHemp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21) Enter the Airport Express. Still one of my wants.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Since it has a USB port I suppose its possible. Apple could partner with someone like EyeTV to offer that functionality as an addon service that they don't have to support directly.
- woogster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"4) The 360 is a big, loud box"
This is true, I was quite surprised at how loud my brother's 360 was. - LordHelmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is pretty cool, but I want something (either Apple TV or my 360) to be tied to my Netflix account, so I can just use that for rentals, and have them trickled down to my Apple TV or 360. I don't want to own a HD full of movies, I'd rather have the top 3 or 4 movies in my queue available at the touch of a button though.
