- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -12/+167What the hell kind of video player has full screen disabled in the first place?!
- Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -2/+66That is ridiculous that the full screen "feature" is disabled in the first place. They create what they consider a standard, and then require you to pay, just to watch videos how every other FREE media player out there will let you watch videos.
- aralbalkan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+56I can just see the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ad on this now: Mac: Hi, PC, what're you doing? PC: Oh, I'm playing a video fullscreen -- I can do it straight out of the box. Mac: Oh, yeah, I can do that too -- I just need to write a small script... Oops! :)
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51VLC is a miracle... plays anything quicktime can play, and most other things it cant.
for anything that VLC cant play, there's mPlayer - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+48One that wants you to pay... *shrug*

- admdrew, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34"QuickTime is only 'crippled' to users who don't explore what is part of the Apple script desktop environment."
You mean most average computer users? This is like a Windows fan noting "you only have to tweak your registry a little to do this; it's a good reason to learn the Windows registry!", a comment that would be modded down on digg.
On the other hand, I'm glad that this hack exists (because it's neat and useful), and hopefully it's something that the average user wouldn't find overwhelming to implement. - vdubski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27This widget also does the same thing for those of us who are lazy.
http://www.dashboardwidgets.com/showcase/details.php?wid=605 - h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23You can play movies in iTunes too, and in full screen.
- BigW, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22And Frontrow, you can play the movies fullscreen in Frontrow too.
Its unbelievably pointless that quicktime can't do full screen directly. - quoigonfishin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21VLC works great as a full screen Quicktime player. It will also handle a bunch of other video codecs that Quicktime can't play and it's available for Windows as well.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - JDOG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Agreed with Davdav....Apple crippled it specifically to get people to upgrade to pro. There's pretty much no other reason the common person would upgrade to pro except to use full screen...
Don't get me wrong, Quicktime Pro is packed with features and worth the purchase for some of it's "pro" ones, but these days you should get full screen with everything. - danboarder, on 10/12/2007, -14/+30@Neil - this is not a "cheat", it is a "tip". Sheesh. Applescript is there for anyone who wants to learn it. It can automate and control a lot of apps - this tip by Macworld just points one useful one out.
It's a shame that Apple would disable full screen as a default to begin with -- for Windows to Mac switchers, they will find this annoying, since WMP comes with full screen. QuickTime is only 'crippled' to users who don't explore what is part of the Apple script desktop environment. This is a good reason to learn a bit of Applescript! - mmarvin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22I thought Apple "just worked". If I wanted to learn how to use a terminal I would use linux. This is a pet peave but I'm not being anti-apple, I'm switching over soon, just commenting on the fact that they want to make money just as much as microsoft.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15VLC is MUCH better (IMHO) than QA - www.videolan.org
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I agree with the sentiment that this should be in the free version. There is absolutely no reason that video playing software should lack a fullscreen option. Maybe if it was a new feature that Apple had came up with and we've never seen before, but fullscreen mode has been in just about every video player for a very long time.
Apple should really change this. I think saving/transcoding are big enough features to sell Quicktime Pro, they don't need to cripple a consumer level (non pro) feature. That's stupid. - wordsofwisedumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The strange thing is all Macs have Quicktime Pro. It's not a software upgrade at all when you buy it, all you do is enter a serial number (visible in plain view in System Preferences without an admin password (all Apple stores have Quicktime Pro, infer what you want)). It would be nice if Apple would stop screwing its customers on this one and at least gave them fullscreen. Withholding the save functions is less of a gyp but fullscreen is an essential for non "pro" users.
- crashingechelon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11That's all I do since iTunes has quick time built into it. Just load up the movie you want to watch and hit the full screen button.
- monsters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10just use vlc, it plays those wacky m4v files as well. full screen, np.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html - katanna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Or you can use "Go Go Quicktime," an app which simply runs the script given in the link.
I keep my copy of Go Go Quicktime on my desktop, and anytime I want to watch a video, just double click it!

Matthew - schildkroeter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Couldn't you make this a thousand times handier, if you did not save it as an application, but instead saved it as a script, then make a Scripts folder for Quicktime, and then assigning a hot key in the System Preferences to the Script, which should now be available over the menu bar?
Launching an app is a unnecessary step IMHO provided the script menu is available in QT...
I bought Pro anyways, for the quick editing features etc., so it doesn't really matter for me, but still - I could imagine this might be useful... - natemc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8iSEPIC: VLC is far from AWESOME! It's dvd playback is only possible if you have AnyDVD installed to bypass CSS and even then it's buggy and crashes on DVD menus frequently (especially with deinterlace on) and it doesn't have support for my media keys on my keyboard.
It's still the only movie player I use but it's far from perfect. - darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Heh, the part about Windows that I love:
*Insert DVD*
Windows: I SEE YOU'VE INSERTED A DVD. WOULD YOU LIKE WMP TO PLAY IT?
*Click yes*
WMP: i CANNOT PLAY THE DVD. WOULD YOU LIKE TO PURCHASE THE CODEC FOR $29?
Why doesn't Windows at least check if the DVD codec is installed? I mean, it doesn't come with XP...
And, the DVD thing balances it out, since XP needs you to pay $29 to play DVDs, while OS X needs you to pay $29 to play in full screen. - TravisS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I can understand Apple charging for the recording features in Quicktime, but charging for Full screen is a little sad on their part. Even Microsoft doesn't charge for full screen. I think Apple may change all of this in the next version of quicktime.
- zad1, on 10/12/2007, -16/+21Use Quicktime Alternative. Period.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm - timf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"People that want to transfer video to their ipods needed."
Is that a job offer? - giaguara, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5... which by the way also shows how to make quicktime record video too, un-pro.
- LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's kinda annoying and pointless why they left full screen out. Hence why I pirated it.
- stoanhart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I always have and always will hate Quicktime. For all the great features in OSX, why would they put this horrible piece of software in. I would put QT right below RealPlayer on my *****-list.
- dharcha1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yeah listen to wordsofwisdom.
i did that a long time ago. go to the apple store, open system prefs, go to quicktime, then copy and paste into an email. it works wonderfully. - dmron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5LOL, that's great. Best digg comment EVAR!!
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5are you new to apple or being sarcastic? they had a firmware "update" that disable the ability to put a g4 processor in a g3 so you would have to buy a new computer. when motorola had problems with production, they changed the specs so that if you pre-ordered a 500mhz, you would get a 450 instead at the same price. companies that have to make money will play dirty, some more than others.
- gorkish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How about a way to make the quicktime plugin play fullscreen? Even if you have QT Pro there is NO WAY to make it happen!
- lepton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4As you may surmise from some of the comments, Apple has only crippled the QuickTime Movie Player application itself. All the features of QuickTime are available to all Mac software, and there are tons of applications out there that prove it - even Apple's other free included stuff (such as iTunes and Front Row.) It is sad Apple did this to nickel and dime a few bucks from non-savvy users. However, it is trivial to get around (which makes it even sadder.)
- arnar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@mathew and others: even better, set up a Cmd-3 trigger in QuickSilver that runs the script.
There's no need to save it in a file, just type period (.) in the subject field to switch to text mode, enter the script (use alt-return and alt-tab to type the newline and tab) and QS figures out the action to be "Run as AppleScript".
Now, when in quicktime player, just press Cmd-3 and you've got full-screen. - UnConeD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd go further and wager that the lack of full screen is one of the main reasons why Quicktime is hated so much. Think about it:
- Unlike Real or WM, you can just download QuickTime streams entirely and watch them when completed. With QT, I can watch hi-def trailers and video even if my connection is not fast enough for streaming.
- Quicktime comes with a great set of *standards compliant* codecs. I'll take AAC and H.264 (MPEG) over proprietary Real/WM crap any time.
- Quicktime browser embedding works well on a variety of platforms and browsers. And if the embedding fails, you can provide a direct link to the .mov file for others as there are no proprietary streaming protocols. Just plain HTTP.
Yet, I don't know a single non-apple user who does not hate Quicktime. Apple has definitely screwed itself by crippling the non-pro player and having annoying nag screens. - hexix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5sojin:
As an Apple user, I agree with you. I think there is no excuse for them blocking fullscreen out of quicktime. It's a very stupid move on Apple's part, as they obviously want Quicktime to be the most popular app/format for video.
It could be worse though, Apple could be developing an anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-malware product that they would later plan on selling to the people who bought their operating system. Now, that would be ***** up, don't you think? - cerisaac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ok, I took a break and looked it up. Here it is:
osascript -e 'tell application "Quicktime Player" to present movie 1'
Just enter that into a Terminal window and poof! - dmron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm not digging this because it's cool, I'm digging it to bring attention to the world about how ridiculous it is that you would even need such a hack to watch videos fullscreen.
- app13pi3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It works great, does what it says. It does however cause problems when I'm using two monitors. I've got my macbook pro hooked up to an external monitor and when I run the full screen script the quicktime window moves to the laptop screen and maximizes regardless of it's location when I ran the script. It's a little annoying, because I want to be able to play 1080 HD movies( trailers at the moment) on my external monitor and quicktime keeps moving over to my (much) smaller laptop screen.
The script does work quite nicely though. - steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i found this like 8 months ago, then i found a crack for QT (crackspider.net, they have everything for WinXP and OSX.)
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or you can install any one of the freely available or trial versions of popular DVD player software, which installs the codecs for you, and then use any media player you want to play the DVDs.
- macsrock888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use VLC most of the time but this is still cool Thanks for posting it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whats easier still is to just use one of the many serial numbers for QT you can find all over the place. You simply should not have to pay for full-screen mode.
I have no idea who "Dawn M Fredette" is, but thank you for being stupid enough to let your name and QT key out onto the net :) - r0ck3tm4nn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah, I was kind of hoping that by getting a Macbook, it would come with QT Pro....but oh well. You technically can view movies in full screen by viewing it in Front Row, but thats pretty damn circuitous.
Definately will try this out when I get home from work, though. - k4st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or, save the hassle of all of this and just use Front Row! :P
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its called VLC.
- GernBlanston, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Do elaborate, schildkroeter, this sounds intriguing!
I got as far as saving it as a script and verified it works. - kweber103, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just if any one need's it i saved it to my server
