OS X Annoyances How Come I Can’t Open A File If More Files Are Being Copied
alexraiano.com — Just today I noticed that OS X doesn ’t seem let me open a file that I just copied if there are more files that still need to be copied. I know I can open the files using the open command on via a terminal but there has to be a better way...

- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand what you did to get that message (unless the file really hadn't finished copying yet.) I can open files in that situation and frequently do. My job often involves copying massive numbers of files over from the network to my own machine and I start opening the copied files before the entire operation is done.
One of the things that OS X does when copying large number of files is to create placeholder icons in the destination location during the copy process. I've seen people (including me) try to open those placeholders on accident. Obviously, you can't open those, but once a file has been copied, it's perfectly fine to open it even if others are still being copied.- raianoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure however, like I said in my post I could be doing something wrong. I'll give it another try when I get home. Thanks for helping me out. I'm completely new to OS X.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've noticed a similar thing.. when I am copying or moving files from one HDD to another I can't take other files from the same folder and move them to the trash. It defeats the purpose of multitasking...
- raianoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just tried this again and it gave me the the same error message. To get the error, I tried to open an image that had a thumbnail already generated for it however, OS X told me it couldn't open the file because it was being accessed. Can you reproduce this problem?
I've gone ahead and updated my post with additional screenshots. - raianoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apparently the .DS_Store files are what was causing the problem for me. Somebody replied on my blog with an explanation as to why I was getting this error.

The more people ask for it, the more likely it is to get fixed.
-jcr - raianoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to this hint, the problem I am having is not unknown. I'm pretty sure I tried to open a file that was already copied because the file that I tried to open had a thumbnail generated for it.

Is this not the same problem? I will try and reproduce the error later today when I get home...- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What you're describing on your site is different from what the Mac OS X Hint site describes. They're describing how to open a very large file before it's done copying (which I think is unwise but to each his own.) What you're describing on your site is being unable to open an already copied file while other files are still being copied. That just doesn't happen--or at least I've never seen it happen in 10+ years of using Macs. You're 100% certain that the files you're copying have already finished copying? This seems very strange to me.
- raianoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NSResponder,
Is it a bug or am I doing something wrong? Have you seen the same error before? - raianoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anybody?
