- Derfus, on 10/12/2007, -11/+79it is part of the liberal media conspiracy
- halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36Statistically, it's possible for all the air in a room to randomly collect in the upper left corner, causing the occupants to asphyxiate.
Technically, it's possible.
The odds of it happening on the other hand... - floam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24This has nothing to do with OS X or the stupid widget. OS X just comes with a full version of the Oxford English Dictionary and Thesaurus. It's nothing done by Apple.
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Is this news?
The answer may surprise you. - cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21derfus, Guessing by your digging pattern, I'm assuming you were being sarcastic.

(Stop digging him down people, he's being sarcastic) - JesperL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"How many "righties" do you see on digg?"
How am I meant to tell? I mean, the typing of left-handers and right-handers looks very similar. - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12.....what?
- sincewednesday, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Well, the source of the OSX Dictionary is the New Oxford American Dictionary, 2nd Ed., so I suspect you would find it in the printed version as well.
Interestingly, the 2nd Ed. was published in May 2005, well after the intention of establishing a democracy in Iraq was known. Of course, it's possible it was a holdover from the 1st Ed. (9/2001).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Oxford_American_Dictionary - cfizzo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12it makes the story lame and inaccurate.
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+91) It is quite obviously sarcasm.
2) I don't see the need for the article to specify the widget, because all that does is access the full application.
http://img254.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1lh8.png - geekee, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14The current govt. in Iraq is democratically elected. Democracy does exist in Iraq. Whether it will survive is questionable, however. So political bias trumps clarity for a feature that's supposed to be functional at Apple.

How many "righties" do you see on digg? - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It had "OSX" in the headline. Had it said "Apple," it would have gotten here twice as fast.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Talk about being topical. Now lets see printed dictionaries do that :-)
- arkhangel78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As others have stated, it's the Oxford English Dictionary and Thesaurus that prepared this statement, not Apple.
- christianw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i wouldnt say calling a democracy in iraq being far off is liberal influence. id say its more like blatantly obvious.
btw, partisianship in any form is evil. forget which team people are on. look at the politician as a individual and ask yourself "can he get the job done?"
oh and relying on any "tv show" or "news channel" of any kind whatsoever as your primary source for political information only shows how much you dont care about what happens to this country. - Rkstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And you don't even need to use the widget. it's in the actual dictionary application. you can just select/right-click the word democracy (as i did from this page) and choose "look up in dictionary" :)
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Far be it from any of us to judge the accuracy of the New Oxford American Dictionary.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sarcasm - pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"derfus, Guessing by your digging pattern, I'm assuming you were being sarcastic."
I'm surprised people needed to do the research to figure that out. - gormenghast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4giggle.
- grr74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What liberal conspiracy? Do you really think democracy is heading for Iraq now or anytime soon?
I guess the Iraqi way of telling the government we are not happy with the current state of affairs boils down to suicide-bombs. Real interesting take on civil disobedience or the norm of showing discontent in a democracy: demonstrating. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wait, foresight? Am I to conclude by your statement that the Republicans panned ANYTHING for Iraq after they blew up Saddam?
What are you smoking? - arjung, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Weird! I really thought they would avoid "sensitive" subjects from things like dictionaries. They could have easily used an older reference to the Revolutionary way or something.
But I did check my dashboard, and it is true. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't see that sentence on the widget but I do on the full program.
- nacharya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2for god's sake its just the word put in a sentence as an example. as Iraq is in the news a lot it enables some to see what it means quickly.
- Xill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After the massacre the New world order caused there, they deserve much better than the american "fake" democraty.
- kizio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Good. Things never change. http://catszone.blogspot.com
- Rorrim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not "statistically;" you mean "theoretically."
/quantum mechanics - Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I looked at it myself, it works!
- thanksgiving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this may be news to you, but iran is a democracy of sorts in the middle east, one of the few really. people vote there, but things must be approved by their religious leaders.
kind of like how in the US we vote, but it doesn't matter if our congressmen and senators don't reflect what we say and do. - aerogant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think people focus to much on democracy. Don't get me wrong, democracy is an important part in a system but by itself can become really unbalanced. The constitution and laws help balance it out, other wise the majority would rule the minorities unfairly. It could happen to a point where the majority can make slaves of a minority, something the US constitution helped solve in it. Having a good constitution prevents such things from happening and protects individuals and minorities from being treated differently. A lot of countries flaunt their democracy as if that is the only thing that is important in a government, especially when the majority are highly religious and tend to do things in their government that adversely affects minority religions.
So even if Iran became a democracy, they could just end up being another Israel, where people not of the state religion are treated differently. - abrooks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or hover your mouse over the word and hit apple+ctrl+d
I mean right clicking...what's that?! - mrmdc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6And this changes what?
- mrmdc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dude, i took the screenshot, it's real.
- Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The Apple dictionary offers a counterpoint in its entry for "democracy":
"capitalism and democracy are ascendant in the third world." - mhmdkhamis, on 10/13/2007, -0/+0http://girls.paramegsoft.com/
http://dir.paramegsoft.com/ - johnlande360, on 03/17/2008, -0/+0The current govt. in Iraq is democratically elected. Democracy does exist in Iraq.

- InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, what a martyr!
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2- The current government in Iraq is a puppet government with little to no political or military power or influence. People from across the political spectrum have acknowledged this fact as a serious problem for quite some time.
- Therefore, democracy does not exist in Iraq.
- Apple is not responsible for writing the contents of the New Oxford American Dictionary.
- You are a pathological Apple-hater. - arepeoplestupid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3You are so right yet you get dugg down for it, Can you guys digg me down and digg up the people who are wrong
- smith41, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Great! This can go on the back of my t-shirt of bruce the wonder yak
http://ultimind.net/finalcutpro.html - phillydrifter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1LOL, go apple!
What they mean is *our version* of democracy, meaning mostly democracy but then outlawing drugs to force them into the black market and bring violence to the streets. - michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Holy *****. He's right, I just tried it.
The thesaurus is right also. - dracheflieger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Short foreskin eh?...you don't turn a ship on a dime, you don't turn a nation at the drop of a hat (unless it's something like 9/11) and you don't plant a democracy in a life time...the world is smaller every day and jihadists will either win or die. It will take at least two generations for the seed of freedom to flower but those that can't see this and only see their immediate wants and desires or are just plain Bush haters will never understand. Too phuquing STOOPIT!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3wow... I honestly can not believe this made it to the front page.
- kaiserollofdoom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Its like they were psychic
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Fraud it says no such thing and believe me I wish it did. OS X 10.4.9 Power P.C. widget.
- vinbot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3I guess if a person is so dumb they need to look up the spelling of "democracy", they are also dumb enough to find the assertion about Iraq controversial.
