- tweakerxp, on 11/06/2007, -0/+7Yeah, you have to go by IP until Apple fixes this.
I was actually hoping that network browsing would be improved in Leopard, guess not! - Wander2000, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6Here's the facts: with Tiger, you could see all of your networked Windows machines by simply opening up the Networks tab. With Leopard, you can't. Yes there are workarounds such as typing in smb://192.xxx.x.x, but it's totally unacceptable for Apple to have missed this bug when they shipped their new OS!
- ThePennster, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3Thanks for the tip insomnic, but I did change the workgroup under the Networking preferences over the week-end, but it refuses to save the setting. I keep changing it to "HOME" and every time I hit "apply" the setting would just revert back to being blank...
- ThePennster, on 11/06/2007, -0/+3This has been such a struggle for me...It's been nothing short of a frustrating week-end! I love how the Leopard Help menu told me "make sure you are on the same workgroup" to enable Windows file sharing, but it didn't say how to do it!!
- justjo, on 10/30/2007, -2/+5To connect to a windows machine enable smb under-sys prefs/sharing/highlight file share than select options check smb box, then go to finder on the top bar select go/connect to server, and in server address type smb://192.xxx.x.x with the last # being your windows computer address. Finally give your password and your good to go. This worked for me anyway.
- curveo, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2Its just sad when you turn on your computer running Tiger for the first time out of the box and it seamlessly connects to your network see ALL shared computers running on the network and allows you to browse when Leopard damn near DELIBERATELY breaks it, undocuments it, & doesn't even provide an easy to reach article on their site addressing the problem.
I even tried calling tech support but i was on hold for 45 minutes before I finally hung up. ALSO when I did finally get it working my windows computers show up as an old CRT Monitor with the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH??? Funny true but I'm not in a laughing mood right when my network is broken because of Leopard...... Tirate over. - jsqrdgsf, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Me too. I can no longer access Samba shares from my Windows and Linux boxes. I can see the icons for these boxes in the Finder, but no matter what I do, I can't connect to them.
- chuckstep, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1You don't need to enable file sharing in order to use the connect option.
- joel8x, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1The problem is not widespread and there has been no one fix that takes care of those of us who are affected. We have been trying to figure out what all of us have in common and so far it's nothing. There are enough people affected by it to get the word out, but we are the minority compared to those whose SMB networking is without issue.
For those of you who think it's something simple, please read the linked discussion thread before wasting your time with comments here that are not helpful or insightful. - cybermansa, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Same problem here. Hope there is a fix soon. How many affected are also using boot camp? Could there be a correlation?
- jnorris441, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1I have this same problem. Lame that my eeepc with windows xp works flawlessly on the network, meanwhile my macbook pro is struggling....
- GoClick, on 02/12/2008, -0/+110.5.2 doesn't fix this either.
- belthesar, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1You do know that it's following the rules of LM and NTLM passwords which don't allow said characters in passwords, right?
- osiris24x, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1I'm an Apple consultant and I can confirm that it's definitely broken under Leopard. *le sigh*
- linespin, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1This bug is also documented in the following PC Mag Article under "Vista Similarity 4: Nuked Networking": http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2223941,00.as ...
- velopreacher, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0This IS an apple bug. I've tried turning off IPv6 and everything else on the Apple forum, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID
- matspekkie, on 12/16/2007, -0/+0The BIG BUG i found is that samba does not send an % karakter in passwords so having an account with that simply does NOT work.
This is new in leopard in tiger it worked good so first check if you have an % in your passwd if so there is no way else than to change your password. it Fu...... drove me nuts. oh yeah it is still not solved bad apple - linesdrawn, on 11/27/2007, -0/+0This is NOT a bug. Apple chose to add IPv6 to Leopard, most SMB shares (in my work case win 03 server) are not using IPv6, so lets turn it off and play nice with Windows. Go to "System Preferences > Network > Ethernet (could be wireless if you connect that way) > Advanced button > TCP/IP tab > Configure IPv6 drop-down > set it to off" Now you should flush your DNS, open a terminal and type "dscacheutil -flushcache" Browse Away.
Cheers, - murpy, on 09/09/2008, -0/+0I've a related problem since I use to share printers from a 10.3 mac but the new acquired 10.5 mac doesn't see any printer in the "default browser" window (where it usually use to see all the printers shared on the LAN). Struggle probably comes from the workgroup forgetting attitude: the WINS tab in advanced option in network preferences it's incapable to remember the workgroup I choose (I'm not using the standard "workgroup). I digit the name and when I come back the field is blank again. weird and frustating.
Anyone has a similar problem adding shared printers?! - Jeffe, on 10/29/2007, -0/+0That's fixable, you just have to create a new location, then it sticks.
- louisvp, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1PROBLEM SOLDED FOR ME :
Create a new Location in your Network preferences and set it up to your workgroup etc... everything works fine then. Editing an existing location doesnt work, CREATE A NEW LOCATION. - ganus, on 11/16/2007, -0/+0I can see all the shares, but most of them show up as empty folders. It seems to be any folder that was being shared on the network before I got the mac shows up as empty, but any new folder I share will show its contents. So, I tried to disable file sharing on my windows box and re-share the folders that were having the issue, but this still did not help. I really don't want to copy all my files into a new folder because of this.
- rswc90, on 11/04/2007, -0/+0I just installed leopard on my duo-core iMac -- Networking does not work correctly. After 5 hours, I now can get into my PC desktop -- but can't seem to even locate my PC laptop. All was working smoothly with Tiger. I have tried to create new location -- that did not work. I entered my IP address -- still no good.
- ryyguy, on 02/24/2008, -0/+0Had this problem, it's actually quite easy to fix. First, go to System Preferences, then open Sharing. Make sure "File Sharing" is checked AND selected (highlighted), then click the "Options" button. Check the "Share files using SMB" option and close preferences. Restart the finder (either through the Force Quit menu or through terminal -> "sudo killall Finder"), and your files will show up when copied to Windows 2003 file shares.
- Demasso, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0Can I make Leopard remember it's workgroup name in the 'WINS' tab in the Advances part in the Network section in System Preferences ?
I don't use 'Workgroup' as a workgroup name, as (old) Windows computers do, but I see my Leopard Macs are stuk in the 'Workgroup' workgroup and no way get them out there... When I modify this and check back to it later, everything I've put in that section is just... gone... Frustrating. - derekge, on 01/30/2008, -0/+0Worked for me - thanks!
- insomnic, on 11/02/2007, -3/+3I have had no issues sharing between Leopard and 3 XP machines and a NAS running SMB and AFP. I even went to 2 different networks and was able to share and connect to shares without an issue (one was Domain and one was Workgroup controlled). Keep reading through the apple support threads as people keep finding solutions to their individual issues with networking.
I can also connect to shares directly using name resolution (smb://servername/sharename) without any problems on multiple networks so it's not a "Fact" that it doesn't work. Maybe you should read through some more of the support articles at Apple because most of those people are finding their issues are due to their network settings or share settings.
This is not to put your own issues down, but to point out that this isn't affecting everyone as some of you are insisting. I really hope a bunch of "Leopard has error X - let them know!" articles don't reach Digg just because a handful of people are having issues and can't take the time to work through the issue.
For ThePennster - if you go to Networking in the System Preferences and then click the "Advanced" button for your connection type (Ethernet, Airport, etc) you will find the WINS tab has where you can set the workgroup. I have a workgroup set for my home but I can still browse other workgroup and domain shares so I'm not sure how specific that function is compared to how the shares are created on the Windows side. - Demasso, on 02/08/2008, -0/+0Can't have an @ character in the password neither...
Changed some passwords on some win boxes, mostly solved the problem. Funny thing is that I see other macs on the network having the same icon as win boxes. Yes with the DSOD icon, now that's LoL! Anyway, that icon is funny to look at one time, but having to look at it all the time is a bit too much i think. - sraubens, on 02/06/2008, -0/+0Worked for me also!
- mag7966, on 10/31/2007, -1/+0yep, this is a real problem for leopard. the operating system may or may not show the windows shares in the sidebar, however, i can navigate to the share using go connect to server ip address. at one point, one of my vista shares showed up, but the other two which are identically configured would not show up. all are in the same workgroup, including leopard. the turn off filesharing and reboot workaround did not work for me (although even if it had, i am unclear of its benefits as i want to share some of my leopard files on the network). this problem is as bad as leopard getting stuck on the blue screen of death when upgrading from tiger and choosing the upgrade option and then having to supply linux commands as a workaround.
- wageslaven, on 11/10/2007, -6/+2huh? What about 'just works"?
