- Scheissenegger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40I know osx86 has been around for some time, but 10.4.7 has been released yesterday so it IS new
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22EULA's are not binding contracts and will not hold up in court. This runs BOTH ways; the company cannot prevail if they sue you for violating the EULA, but you can't prevail if they fail to uphold their end of the EULA.
EULA's are pretty things that the legal departments come up with, but software is still subject to the same laws that apply to other commercial transactions. - panheaduk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I would never do anything illegal sir, honest.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26Apple must be really pissed when people ues their OS
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20I own five different macintosh computers. If this makes it easier to run an operating system I already own on my non macs. I could care less what the lisencing agreement says.
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Uh, the update came out last night. Give them a freaking full day before you bitch about it not being hacked correctly.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -12/+26 NSResponder - who gives a *****, all you're doing is violating the EULA - it's not a ***** crime.
If you bought a Mac, and got the software, you can use it however you please in your own home, on any hardware you want, just don't sell it, just don't upload it if you didn't buy it. You should seriously be in politics, if you aren't already. - ntnwwnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10In the article, green demon == demonoid.com
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16now if there was only a torrent of 10.4.7 out there for me to download..........
- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@spectre_25gt,
You are totally wrong, at least in the USA. It is not copyright infringement to make copies of software for the purpose of using it or backing it up.
http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#117 - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17hooray, finally the right way around.
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@ZachPruckowski
The only thing that lacks performance wise is graphics. Many cards are supported, such as the GMA900 and the GMA 950. ATI cards have better support than Nvidia at the moment. On every other front, the "windows" computers run OS X better than Apple computers by FAR. Look at some X bench scores. Modern Intel processors totally kill the PPC processors, even beating out the dual processor G5's in many cases. Do some research before you come to a conclusion. - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@CornStarch: Apple doesn't actually make any of their hardware anymore; haven't for quite some time. I guess they feel it's a safer bet to maintain control of their hardware platforms than to license their software to 3rd party hardware vendors and compete with MS. As a customer, it's also nice to buy a complete widget from a single vendor that can offer a controlled customer experience and full product support. If your time and experience/satisfaction are valuable to you, it's nice to have the option of a premium vendor available on the market. For those that prefer to customize, tinker or bargain-hunt, the generic open-platform PC has the advantage.
- Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You know, I thought that at least for past versions, it didn't matter if you had an AMD or Intel chip, as long as it supported SSE3? And even then, there was a patch for processors with only SSE2...
Of course, I could be completely wrong. I still haven't managed to get the damn thing installed because it won't recognize my hard disks. - ultrasoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Listen up guys, the article DOES NOT address several issues, of which I am familiar with as I have been using 10.4.6 on my Inspiron for some time now.
1) Battery life is going to suck on your laptop. Expect OS X to only last half as much time as your XP. (XP on my 9-cell goes 5.5 hrs and OS X only runs 2.25 hrs).
2) GMA 900 cards have a VGA issue. You need to have a dongle in order to boot OS X on your GMA 900 laptop or you'll get the blue screen of death (not the equivalent of the Windows version of BSOD).
3) AMD systems CANNOT at the moment run 10.4.7., only 10.4.6. Don't bother upgrading using the 10.4.7 update from Demonoid as it will fry your OS X installation.
There are much much more issues than these. Check out http://www.osx86project.org/. It's the official site and they have a good wiki. - wonginator1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Muyoso
Well then it's a good thing Apple switched to Intel. Where have you been for the last half of the year? OS X may not be optimized for running your current pc hardware. Apple's proprietary hardware will probably run faster than your current setup. - darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That's because Apple doesn't make Hard drives or Processors, they make iPods.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Illegal or not, I say the more people who get their hands on OS X, the better. People need to realize just how horrible Windows is (I use both all the time, so I know, thank you). Apple needs the "hearts and minds' of the PC masses. Once they see how enjoyable OS X is, many of them will buy the hardware.
- nethenm, on 04/01/2008, -2/+6Whoever made profit42 is a poor developer. They need to learn how to make websites for cross-browser compatiblity. Those bitches.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14They are because they are a hardware company. They use their software to sell their hardware.
As for illegal, well -- it's a violation of EULA at least. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Dude, you have no idea how business works.
$129 sales price != $128 profit. You must include the cost of production as well. Employee salaries + support staff salaries + facilities/utilities + marketing + customer support + legal + accounting + executive bonuses... - mtied, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You would be suprised on what hardware is supported. I'm running OS X (10.4.6) on my PC right now and all of my hardware is supported.
Just a heads up for everyone, the AMD patch for 10.4.7 should be out in a couple of days. - ranjur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I've got OS X running on hardware as humbling as a 2.4 ghz celeron, asrock motherboard (with the GMA900 video chipset that Muyoso mentioned -- all video effects look great), gig of value ram, and the performance is great. I don't dual boot, however; I built a dedicated machine for it. I have a friend that built a nice P4 3.2 ghz system with an intel mobo and 3 gigs of DDR2, and his boots up in 10 seconds flat!
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4atdigg: You are a f***ing moron. Please learn basic accounting.
Only facilities may be considered fixed costs, since these can be spread amongst projects. In corporate accounting, project expenditures are dependent (ie, variable) on the size of the staff and amount of resources devoted to the project, which can *change* over the course of the project.
Furthermore, staff may still need to be committed to the project *after* it is released, incurring ongoing costs. As they are being paid to keep working on that project and not on something else, the costs go into the projects' budget.
Marketing is a per-product expenditure. Global marketing strategy is one thing; individual product campaigns are something else entirely. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Are you implying that nobody will finish reading the guide?
- Amishplumber, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9profit42 is awesome, half of all the good guides I see are from that site.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I'd love to be able to dual boot Linux and OSX on my laptop instead of Windows and Linux. I'm definitely going to have to look into this.
I wonder how well it runs though. Apple designs their computers and OSes together as a package. They get to optimize everything. Installing OSX onto just any x86 PC may not run too well.
Anyone out there know if what I said has any truth to it? - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It depends on what you want to do with the operating system. Anything that is not graphics intensive will operate fine. The entire operating system is fairly stable, crashes a little on me because of my overclock. Overall I think it is slightly better than running windows due to the widgets and sweet features. If you have a GMA 900 or a GMA 950 graphics card in your laptop, it will run native, without any workarounds. Check out www.osx86project.net for more details.
- I_am_so_smrt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For you people out there who doubt os x86 and its compatibility with non-apple hardware, i've got news for you, it has supported most of my test systems. I have an older os x86 dvd that a friend gave me, and I can tell you that every system i've run it on ran great. The kicker was when I loaded the os onto a 2 year old Gateway machine with a 3.0 GHz intel proc and onboard video. I then decided to run some HD video from apple's quicktime site. IMAX Deep Sea 3D ran at 1080p without a hitch. I can't wait for Apple to start selling os x for any PC hardware. I really don't see what the problem is. It would seem as though selling their OS would bring in more costumers. So what if every piece of hardware isn't compatible with os x, I've bought ***** from Fry's that is clearly intended for windows and not worked at all! Get off of your high horse Steve, ride the ***** snake!
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5nah - the guy that runs profit42 is a complete lamer, he submitted his "Guide" to installing 10.4.6 several times, under 3-4 different names and 2-3 different URL's. Besides, he's just rewriting what other people wrote without giving them credit.
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3DOS 5.1 running in a virtual window is all you ever need
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5VMware != x86. There is a difference.
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its the nForce 3/4 Chipset and SATA that have trouble. I tried several different methods and releases to get it to work on my Athlon64 nForce 4 system and to no avail.
- SirZRX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2working as inttended
- LowFuel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4you get what you pay for...
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Apple makes money selling hardware, they will never sell a version that will run on an x86 windows computer, and they have said that themselfs.
- ultrasoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You are right on that part. What the article neglected to mention was that the 10.4.7 update put on Demoniod is not entirely decrypted, i.e. only part of the update is installed. It will be decrypted once one of the two masters in the OS X hacking world gets to it- Maddoxx and Sanja. But for now, that update is good enough is it updates several important issues in 10.4.6.
- rova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had been very keen on getting Osx on my windows PC for a long time until I watched the video on Novell SUSE + XGL. It looks sexier than osx imho, its desgined for my hardware, runs legally, and as similar compatibility.
- Lardquake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4[insert sound of world's tiniest violin here]
- dafatkid27, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Actually, I'm pretty sure its osx86project.org.
- nuflux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You have no idea what you're talking about. Please be quiet.
- pcheaven2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Now if I could just find somewhere to download OSX 10.4.7 without getting busted by Apple/Comcast under the DMCA. Done got busted once this year for trying to download OSX. Them ***** at Apple are sharing it THEMSELVES so they can track you and then REPORTING YOU TO YOUR ISP.
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To anyone that is interested so far the VMware Workstation method has gotten me the farthest. No links just search for it.
VMware Workstation 5.0.0 Build 13124
OS X 10.4.6 Prepatched DVD
Athlon64 3700+
Asus A8N-E (nForce 4)
1GB RAM
7900 GT
200GB SATA HDD - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah that's a prett dishonest way of going about it.
Its like telling a kid they can't have candy, then putting candy all over the kids bed, and then when he eats it, beating him for doing so. - Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Yeah see that line there? You just crossed it..." Calm down, he just said what everyone was already thinking.
- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> It's up to the court to decide whether it's fair use or not.
And if we were talking about fair use, you might have a point. But fair use is defined in § 107. I am referring to, and provided a link to, § 117, which explicitly limits copyright protection so that it doesn't cover copying for the purpose of using the software. That definition has far less room for interpretation than fair use does, and no room whatsoever for interpreting it to support what you are saying. You said:
> [The EULA is] the only thing that makes it legal to use their software at all[...]
It says:
> [...] it is not an infringement for the owner of a copy of a computer program to make or authorize the making of another copy or adaptation of that computer program provided [...] that such a new copy or adaptation is created as an essential step in the utilization of the computer program in conjunction with a machine[...]
It directly, unambiguously contradicts you. You don't need something to "make it legal" because it's not illegal in the first place.
> Also, as far as I can tell, the link you pointed me to is speaking about software that you already have a license to.
Er, that's pure fantasy of yours. The link I provided says nothing of the sort. Did you even read it? - suspect23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try this:
http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Vmware_how_to - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I had the money to get a mac that would suit my needs then I'd have one already.
- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, we all know what the clear problem is. You shop at Fry's :P
