OSX 10.4.7 Doesn't Fix Audio Problem
jeremyflint.com — The problem turned out to be a setting that had been changed in the Audio MIDI Setup panel, which lets you set up preferences for Audio I/O devices, as well as MIDI devices. The cause of the problem was several third-party applications (VLC and Audacity) that modified the Audio Output setting, increasing it from 44100.00 Hz to 96000.00 Hz.

- perre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is an important issue to raise. If you check out Apple's discussion forums, or other support forums you'll see the issue has many people feeling stuck, struggling to figure out why their OS drops audio online or in certain file types or why their local mpg videos suddenly pause audio. I go with your inclination to think it's an OS issue. Why would the OS allow any software install or launch modify system audio settings without explicit permission from a user? Especially one hidden (and not very obvious) like this. When I saw that Apple announced in it's 10.4.7 update that they were addressing audio issues I hoped that this, a known one that many people are baffled with, would be addressed. But apparently not.
- jflint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, I am beginning to think it may be a combo OS and Chipset issue. This problem didn't happen on my PowerbookG4, and I used it for lots of audio and video stuff, and ran Audacity and VLC on it as well.
