- afex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+61after you're done linking to a hardware fix, let me know how i can download some ram.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+56I got my MacBook Pro right before Apple released the MacBook. I called them to tell them that the MacBook Pro overheats and whines and they sent a courier to collect it. Full refund paid to me and I ordered a MacBook instead. This was enough of an "official confession" for me :)
- Zeromus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52You can't fix it... they need to. It's a hardware issue.
Up until now there has been no official statement from Apple. This, as not-helpful as it is, is a free ticket for all with whining MBP's call up Apple support and get something done about it. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49I thought those rules applied to all electronics

- andrewr, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44Finally, Apple needed to do this a long time ago.

Don't you have anything better to do with your time? - lifeinanalog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I sent mine in last week, and had it back in three days.
Day one, shipped out to apple.
Day two, apple repaired that morning and shipped it back out that night.
Day three, it came back to me.
So it was a painless, and I wasn't away from it for long. Best thing is that the machine is silent besides the occasional fan that kicks on. - jairhart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19For a split second, I thought that Apple was going to implement WINE... oh well. Glad to see that they're continuing to fix their hardware if it's broken though.
- mmartin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Just in: PC fanboy complains that there are mac fanboys and won't shut up!
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Yeah laptops are a bitch aren't they? Maybe Intel can do something about that for all the laptops they make.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -2/+15About time. Was getting annoying telling them over the phone that every forum, blog, news site was documenting the behaviour, yet they somehow had never heard of it?
Question is, who can really wait X amount of days without their laptop when they need it for work? - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Because it's some of the highest rated hardware out there. The biggest problem is an intermittent whine... Which they are fixing...
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -2/+15It falls under the first year of limited AppleCare warranty, I would assume. I'll be calling tomorrow to see.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12It amazes me how much attention these little problems get.
How screwed up is the mentality Apple has created around their products to be superior, that small issues like discoloration, a fan whine, etc. get this kind of attention in tech circles?
Mac users feel superior to PC users, and get so shocked when they discover that Apple makes products that, like everything else, are not perfect. Get over it. No one's QC is so good that all issues are resolved. If that were the case, imagine how much MORE overpriced their products would be. - CoachZed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Last I checked, the Macbook Pro is a notebook computer. If you've built yourself a custom 1" thick, expandable core duo notebook I will be truly impressed.
- topside, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@jrizzo
"My custom built PC however, outperforms any mac out there, and I can install Quake 4, Oblivion, and Warcraft WITHOUT running crappy emulation.
BTW, anyone out there ever built a custom Mac???"
Since when do you need emulation to install and run Quake4, Oblivion, and Warcraft on a MacBook? You do know these are intel machines that can fully run Windows and get full power out of the GPU. Right?. - addicted44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I dont think its that easy. They have to determine first that it is a significant problem requiring a recall and not limited to a few people (in which case they just fix those as they come to them. With the internet, it is hard to say when there is really a mass problem, because very few post in their forums saying that their MBP's are perfect). Then they need to determine what the cause is, after which they need to figure out a way to fix it in a cost efficient manner.
If this was something that prevented consumers from being able to use their computers, then they probably would not mind taking a loss on the sale to save face. However, the CPU whine, while annoying, did not stop anyone from getting their work done. Which is why apple took a little time, to determine what the best way they could sort this problem was. - cmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7FYI, MacBook Pro != MacPro
- BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@kevin: Wrong...Dell definitely -does- manufacture their own hardware. That's what they do. They do -not- design their own hardware; that's what Apple does.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Umm lets see, hopefully this will stop your whine.
I paid as much for my MBP as I did for my HP laptop. It certainly was not inferior. I have had no issues with it at all.
Second, unless you are paying ***** for their high-end stuff, most of the products you buy from a PC manufacturer are not made to be expanded. Custom does not equal pre-built. Also, custom laptops and PCs do not include any sort of service on the lines that we get with this. Apple builds computers to be used as tools, most of us don't give a ***** if you don't like it because you can't play games. My Mac has outperformed any pc notebook I have ever had, it is more secure and it has more features that were useful to me that came preinstalled.
So, we buy superior, adequately equiped, and (rarely) faulty computers because they will cost us what it would cost for a comprable system without the strong history or being useful. - nilobject, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Jesus. Can we give the heat thing a rest? The MacBook puts out the same amount of heat as an equivalently configured Dell Latitude:
http://www.krischeonline.com/staticpages/index.php?page=macbook
The MacBook is not freakishly hot, ok? It's an Intel processor. Deal with it like everyone else with an Intel/AMD laptop.
As soon as I get my MacBook, I'm going to bludgeon every annoying Mac fanboy whiner that whines about a standard laptop issues with my old PowerBook.
"my MACbook RUNS hot!!!!!"
*whap*
"OMG it'CANT plaY DooM 3!!11!one"
*whap whap whap*
"d000d the fan makes noize!!!1"
*whap whap whap whap* - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There is Virtual PC. And then there's the fact that you can just put Windows on it without an emulator.
- MasterJeef, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Guys, this is not for the "CPU Whine" issue so often reported about around the web. This is for the "Inverter Buzz" that was a problem in the first couple manufacturing weeks of the Macbook Pros. Basically there was a large amount of bad inverters that Apple has acknowledged and will replace.
Macbook/Macbook pro whine goes on. :( - samadam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am on the phone with an applecare rep right now, as I type. He says that he will set up a repair for me. The last time I called about this problem she said I could bring it to a genuis--good luck with that! So this is an acknowledged problem, i mentioned this article and he agreed right away. Yay!
- Markie1006, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I totally agree with nTensify - my 17" MBP has worked flawlessly.
No whine, no warping, yea it get's a tad hot playing games under Windows, but really I'd be stupid to expect it wouldn't get warm under that load. - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed that it's not a confession. This has been handled the same way any other notebook manufacturer would have handled it, but some people have chosen to blow it out of proportion. Unless one of you is going to tell me that you've never heard of a Dell, HP, IBM, etc ship with a faulty fan, HDD, display, etc; In which case I shall question your ability to read. :)
- paddler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"The first rule of buying a Mac is, you do not buy first generation hardware. The seconde rule of buying a Mac is, you do not buy first generation hardware."
I am glad someone does (not me of course). And would like to thank all the Apple Intel Mac beta testers for doing this. I was waiting to buy mine until Apple stepped up and started taking responsibility for the early flaws and it looks like its started. Just in time for the back to school shopping season. Now I'll have my Mac laptop by christmas... - CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Got no clue what people are bi-otching about."
Is it inconceivable to you that some would have the problem while others would not? - Zeromus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm pretty sure this is for the CPU whine (not inverter), as people on the apple forums have had their logic boards replaced with updated models, and given letters explaining the change along with new install DVD's to replace the old ones.
They also report that the new logic boards fix the whine issues. Go check out the apple discussion boards for yourself for some first hand stories.
The article was also updated on the 21st of July to cover the CPU I believe. - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4>"Someone remind me why you guys pay through the nose for
>inferior, inexpandable and (now) faulty hardware?"
apple hardware is expandable except for those rare times when space is prohibitive. i have any number of macs that have been upgraded... and several made in the early 90's that are running tiger just fine. the fun... i mean FUD never ends.
also, its silly to think that hardware from any company is going to be perfect. of course that is a problem especially when your history is as good as apples... when it comes to customer care and customer satisfaction. the process of identifying a problem and fixing it is not just a snap.
first you have to see that its real. while this doesn't seem like it should be a problem when dealing with lots of people its not unusual for perceptions to be goofy. apple is known for quiet computers and it is entirely possible that its not a real problem but a preceived problem because of the reputation and what mac users are used to. there are legal issues to run by the lawyers about liability and such which are just part of due diligence. you then need to get some estimate of how large it is... then you need allocate resources fix the problem as well as make sure you have the parts in hand. if you don't do this before you say something publicly then people will send you their computers and it will seem like for ever before they get them back.
i would point out the title of this article... confession... no crime people. just attitude. - samadam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just finished with him, they are doing the standard overnighting me a box, 5-7 work days, etc. I am happy, as long as I don't think about the problem in general.
- nTensify, on 10/12/2007, -14/+17"Someone remind me why you guys pay through the nose for inferior, inexpandable and (now) faulty hardware?"
Because Apple repairs it, just like above.
Same issue with a Dell laptop? Well, if you could even GET THROUGH tech support, good luck at getting them to replace it without you footing the bill.
That said, my "inferior" MacBook Pro has been absolutely perfect since purchase (no whine of any kind, no discoloration, moderately hot but no worse than any other laptop I've ever owned, especially not my old HP), and I'm CONVINCED after experiencing other people's Macs along side mine that these issues are way overblown. If they'd just put the thing back in the box and sent it back in the first place, they would have never heard the light of day. And if someone told them they wouldn't support it over the phone or in person (which I HIGHLY doubt, after my service record with Apple; they replaced my hard drive in my MacBook Pro even after I had sat it on a super powerful magnet), there's always the web tool they could have went through.
Oh, and as for Inexpandable, tell me, how many times have you "expanded" your Dell laptop lately? - brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Problem with that theory is that you don't get to use it now. I do and when they fix it I can get it fixed. Problem solved.
- spunkmyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had this problem on my 15" macbookpro a few weeks ago and after speaking with Applecare and being very polite yet insistent they help me out, they did. Apple replaced my logic board a few other components and the whine was resolved. It's good to see that Apple has started a initiative for us end-users that have/had this problem. It seems it was luck of the draw with who you got at Applecare and if they were willing to take your laptop back and swap out the logic board.
Now if only they would replace my core duo with a core duo 2 !! :> - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I doubt any MBP owner has had to pay for any repairs related to the whine issue. I'm not letting Apple off the hook but I'm just saying the situation is not that bad.
- samadam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think you may have your info wrong. Of the two problems, the display inverter whine was acknowledged and fixed a while ago. I just bought a macbook, and was planning on taking it in today. It has the CPU whine, and it is a week 23 book.
I believe the way the article worked was that they created one that said that if you have a whine, and the whine gets worse as the display gets darker, then we will fix it; call apple support. You can see that was created in February.
The article was then updated on the 21st July to acknowledge all whines in general without stating a cause.
That is my guess. But for sure, mine whines, and that doesn't specify, so I am going to the local apple store ASAP! Yay! - Initram5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4and what about the MACBOOK noises? mooo and whining?????!!!
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just to let you know, I bought a first-gen Macbook Pro and I've been extremely happy with it, it's been a dream to use and not one problem. I occasionally hear the whine, but I don't understand how this is bothering people, it's barely audible, and it only happens when the processor is under intense strain (I'm a graphic designer and the processer is under intense strain 80% of the time I use my notebook) but not enough to make me return it or complain. My advice would be that if you're thinking of getting one, do it, but wait until the WWDC first. ;)
Jimzip :D - mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually the inverter whine comes from the LCD itself, not under the keyboard where the CPU whine comes from. I had both at one time, but got the first MacBook Pro replaced from Amazon because of the faulty LCD. I then dealt with the CPU whine from the second MBP for the past few months.
Now that this KB article, I can easily get the logic board replaced and get a whine free laptop. - lifeinanalog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Same Apple Care Idea? It's under warrenty, they fixed mine for free. The only payment I had was the time away from the computer.
- Hayl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All you have to do is talk to their (apple's) 2nd-tier support (a "product specialist") and they will take care of swapping the logic-board. I had mine replaced locally under warranty (in Canada we can't mail ours in to Apple) and it resolved the whining problem 100%.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What a pack of ***** retards.... you mean to tell me you guys can actually use a computer? It must be some sort of miracle.
- frank3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2about first generation hardware:
look how ***** and problematic the hd-dvd and bluray players are - charged2885, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just called applecare. They told me that what they are offering is a "reduction", not a fix. The new logic boards have something that reduces the noise. If the current logic board doesn't alredy hve this "reduction", they will replace it with one that does. Keep in mind he might not know what he's talking about.
todd - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lifeinanalog, you were lucky. I sent mine in a couple of weeks ago and they had to replace the mainboard for another issue. It took 8 days to get it back.
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@PJBonoVox
Try using a mac, then get back to us.
