- effer, on 10/10/2008, -5/+26This is getting old... the speculated design is pretty much what everyone imagined since the Macbook Air was released. What's the big deal? Where's the innovation? It would be super sweet if the trackpad was a multi-touch display, but I'm pretty sure it isn't coming. And should we even hope for Blu-ray this time around?
This thing better be thinner, smaller, lighter with better battery life if they want me to even think about upgrading. The good thing about OS X, so far, is that it gets faster with every release and thus old hardware can stick around longer. - Zbug, on 10/10/2008, -2/+13"fn + delete" has the same properties as a PC's delete key. I don't mind all to much, myself.
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -10/+19"It would be super sweet if the trackpad was a multi-touch display"
If it WERE a multi-touch display, it would be pointless, much like the $1200 keyboard with OLED images on the keys. You're not looking at the trackpad; you're looking at the screen, to see the effects of what you're doing on the trackpad.
And multi-touch? WHY? In years of hype and hours of demo videos, multi-touch has been shown doing exactly two things: rotating and zooming images. Whoop dee goddamned do. Multi-fingered swipes and other obscure, non-discoverable ***** will provide excuses for Apple to further obfuscate its UI instead of addressing long-time design defects.
As it is, the existing trackpads don't work well because they're too big and the heel of your hand is in contact with it when at home row, as you try to drag with the other hand. Now they're making them bigger? Exactly the wrong direction. At this point, why in hell don't they just integrate a Wacom tablet and make it truly useful? There's enough room on the 17" for sure.
Apple needs to bring its UI into the '90s with windows you can resize from their edges, user-definable color schemes, menus on apps' main frames instead of one for the whole system, real Delete keys on their laptops. They have plenty to do without dicking around with more gimmicks. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2008, -3/+11What real difference does it make? Mac users have been doing just fine without it and the other "flaws you've mentioned for years. If these things are important to you, then perhaps choosing a different OS would be best. There are Windows UI flaws that are pretty annoying to me (which I won't bother to mention since it's my annoyances so who care?) as well.
The point is, if there is a work around that everyone knows about, or it's a difference that really makes no difference, then it isn't a design flaw, it's just how it works. You get used to the quirks of whatever OS you prefer and you move on.
Move on - cypher35, on 10/10/2008, -0/+6I have to disagree with you on the multitouch pad... I've got one on my new powerbook and I'm absolutely in love with it. It's far more than a gimmick. Zooming and rotating aren't terribly useful in most cases, but I use the three-fingered swipe in nearly all of my applications now. It makes navigating the web and the finder soo much faster.
Add in a nifty little prefpane called "MultiClutch" and you can map multitouch controls to keyboard shortcuts for any application you can think of.
I currently use it to do things like switch documents in TextEdit, move back and forward in firefox, and zoom in photoshop. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2008, -1/+7Well so does your mom, but no one's complaining about that.
- pavanb500, on 10/10/2008, -0/+5Pop it open and clean the fan(s) with a name brand q-tip dipped in 90% rubbing alcohol - the store brand swabs pill and shred badly, and 70% rubbing alcohol lingers too long and lets the water f-up the bearings.
- PrometheusBorn, on 10/10/2008, -2/+7Brilliant! Let's implement arbitrary design decisions used in Windows in OSX!
Or you just use OSX for a month and you get over the fact that they're small insignificant differences. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2008, -2/+7Aaaand again, what difference does it make to the typical Mac user? Apple created the keyboard to be used with their hardware with their OS. If it doesn't have the functionality you prefer, choose different hardware and a different OS.
Whooosh! - dagaz, on 10/10/2008, -1/+5I don't know why you're getting dugg down, I pretty much agree with all your points.
- Nefarion, on 10/10/2008, -0/+4Okay, so you were following Eee PC because you were interested in snagging one, right? Well there are prolly tens of thousands of us waiting for the *new* MacBook that should have been released 6 months ago. We're all fired up because it's late. Had Eee PC been 6 months late, there'd be all kinds of stories on Digg about the upcoming Eee PC.
What makes this such a big deal is it's Apple. And anything with Apple drives controversy, something that I....don't.....get..... - BlackJackJester, on 10/10/2008, -5/+9okokok...hold up. So, I followed a lot of the EeePC news and sneak peaks early on because I knew I wanted one (this post being typed from one). Once I got one, I stopped checking. How many of you are really going to go purchase a new laptop, that is the same as the old one - with upgrades like any new laptop. Does the look really matter that much? Sure it's a swell computer, but it's just a laptop, and those haven't fundamentally changed in the past 5 or 6 years. I...don't...get....it....
- howardgrigg, on 10/10/2008, -2/+5I have a current macbook but would buy a Mac netbook (macbook nano) instead. However as other commenters have said I'm unlikely to upgrade for more of the same.
- unitedkronos, on 10/10/2008, -1/+4I just hope the new MacBook base price are $800/£500 as rumored.
- Kronk42583, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3i agree with you on some things. i don't get the total obsession with apple, especially with the design aspect. the designs very nice but are all minimalist and haven't changed much in years, and i don't see that happening now. it would be nice to see the pricepoint come down, as that might open the doors to many people using OSX than normally would. personally i'd like better speakers and a slightly better video card in the macbook.
like you said though, it is a laptop, and we shouldn't expect any major differences from the norm of what laptops do. - Failchan, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3Buried comment is buried.
- newbill123, on 10/10/2008, -1/+4No speculation on the water resistance of these cases? Another misleading digg headline. :-)
- AceyS, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Yeah... I mind it haha. Not gonna lie. I Feel like a putz when I'm trying to edit something and i have to go to the very right of where i made a mistake to not have to find the fn key.
Then again, it's just one key. - mrBitch, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2+1 for coming up with a Boogie Board MacBook case mod (can't wait to see it).
- Dobby156, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Not interested.
- smirkypants, on 10/10/2008, -1/+3Nope. You just topped it.
- mstrebe, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2I would really prefer to have an actual delete key. Say right where the completely useless "Enter" key is now?
- Juaquin, on 10/10/2008, -11/+13Speculation based on using apple logos as a unit of measurement? Come on now. This is ridiculous. No matter what, new models are coming out on the 14th and who cares if you get a slight sneak peak? You still can't confirm it (or buy it) until the 14th anyways. It's all hot air until then.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2008, -1/+3If it's shaped anything like the MacBook Air, the 17-inch model would also make an excellent Boogie Board. It would be hard to lose underwater as well if you hack it to keep the Apple logo glowing with it shut.
- migitalwarfare, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2not really a sneak peek. it's more along the lines of "here's what i think is going on here based on some grainy ass camera phone pictures, and zero actual inside information"
it's basically some guys best guess, which any one of us on digg could have done without reading through his whole article to figure out. - nastri83, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2It is absolutely unbelievable how much thought and speculation goes on before an Apple event. Not that I find anything wrong with that. Just an observation.
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -10/+11Maybe they'll finally add a real Delete key to their laptops.
HAH. As if. - kungfumaniac, on 10/10/2008, -2/+3Cool.
Not revolutionary. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2008, -2/+3gay akermani post is gay
- StephenCIreland, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1new note of interest, http://www.macx.cn/a/a4000I695495.htm - complete photo set, theres no firewire anymore :(
- IareKEVLAR, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2When somebody has access to a wonderful piece of technology to leak to the world, why are they always terrible at photography? A simple straight on shot of it sitting on the table would have done just fine. These close ups and crazy angles aren't helping me to have faith in the credibility of the source. I bet these images will be nothing near what actually is released. This is Apple's way of getting everyone's attention before their big release of something that may, or may not be cool as hell.
- SteveMax, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2Yes, you are.
Yes, you should. - shank2001, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1Maybe, maybe not. Macs are made in China, so might be the place for a leak like this to come from.
- thesledman, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Wow, Everything you just described about windows in the "90's" is exactly the reason I switch to Mac in the "2000's".
- XMorbius, on 10/10/2008, -1/+1You're right, save for the obvious, no one will know what will come of these new notebooks until Tuesday. But is it really such a problem to speculate and try and bring out any little hints of what it might be in the meantime? I see it as similar to a game or a story. One has the information so far, and the knowledge that something will happen by the end of it. In my case, unless I'm generally not interested in the story, I speculate on what will happen next. And if it's a really good story, I look for clues in what has already happened to figure it out. The scenario here is the same, we're just playing a game of using the available information to see where this story will go.
You're entitled to your opinion of course, and the Apple news on digg gets a little heavy from time to time. But if there is a fundamental problem in just trying to tease out these little details ahead of time, you'll have to explain it to me. Maybe my view is flawed and this isn't as innocent as it seems, but to me this is just a little game that gets played, it's just fun for those who get into it. - sculptedguns, on 10/10/2008, -4/+4if this causes you to become excited, go ***** yourself
- Tecton1c, on 10/10/2008, -2/+2It's just a laptop, guys.
- meathead, on 10/10/2008, -3/+3Yawn.
- mishaneah, on 10/10/2008, -1/+1What a profound remark. No, seriously. It makes sense in a zen like way
- pavanb500, on 10/10/2008, -3/+3Almost signed up for another digg account to digg you again!
- dystra, on 10/10/2008, -2/+2....
if it leaks then i'm not buying it. - mrBitch, on 10/10/2008, -1/+1Dobby, go back to re-reading your Harry Potter books again.
- shauncullen, on 10/10/2008, -3/+2My first gen Macbook sounds like a ***** vacuum cleaner right now. I am excited for the new laptops, but I will wait for Rev 2 before even considering upgrading to a Macbook Pro. Roar on, Macbook, roar on.
- sensualnapes, on 10/10/2008, -2/+1one thing that looks exciting to me, is that the 2 usb ports on the left instead of one on the left and one on the right. I've always thought the one on the right was terribly placed because the cable or whatever you have coming out of that right side usb your mouse hand bangs into it.
- Stalks, on 10/10/2008, -3/+1That must be the most unwittiest reply ever.
- Mcdogg, on 10/10/2008, -2/+0HAHAHAHHAHAH I DONT KNOW ABOUT THIS ONE... FROM THE PACK of CIGS ( SHANGHAI BRAND) i can tell these photos come from China. Living here we are used to seeing the Chinese copying and inventing all kinds of bogus stuff. I was able to buy Lost season 3 here when it wasn't even filmed yet. hahhahah although as expected upon opening the package the dvds were of another tv series.
- Failchan, on 10/10/2008, -7/+5@MacParrot
You do know what a Delete key is, right? You know that is has nothing to do with the OS, it's part of the physical laptop? Whooosh! - Wisgary, on 10/10/2008, -12/+8I like how the only thing people *really* look forward to with Macs is improved aesthetics.
Really?
I'm a PC bitches. - Thesuccessguide, on 10/10/2008, -12/+6Good sneak peek. I love it when apple comes out with new stuff.
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -15/+8gay article is gay
