- Zique, on 10/22/2009, -21/+95Wouldn't surprise me, Apple wasn't exactly displaying their integrity when they shut Google Voice out of the app store, prevented other mp3 players from syncing with iTunes, and banned any software from iPhone that would compete with Apple's own software.
- ohreilly, on 10/22/2009, -12/+84in b4 Apple fanboys calling for the death of Nokia for enforcing some patents and the "they're losing money so they're suing". Note that most of their loss is because of a writedown in the NSN division (Nokia Siemens Networks - the company making the hardware powering the network). The handset division was doing just fine.
The same fanboys would agree fully with Apple enforcing *their* patents, though. - zombiecarlin, on 10/22/2009, -12/+67Apple don't make many friends in business do they?
- pyrates, on 10/22/2009, -0/+34Probably because they were in negotiations with Apple and couldn't come to an agreement. That's why this suit was filed. But I'd sure like to see what they mean by wireless lan and encryption if they don't mean 802.11bg and wep/wpa. I too thought this was agreed upon with a standards body that grants a royalty free patent to all involved.
- ponzihoff, on 10/22/2009, -7/+38Conversation heard at the Nokia HQ, when iPhone was released:
Nokia: We got them! They're infringing our patents!
Lawyer: But they don't even have 3G
Nokia: Oh! What about MMS - I'm sure we did contribute something back in the OMA days!
Lawyer: No, sorry.. No MMS either..
Nokia: What?! Bluetooth transfer then! We worked on the OBEX spec!
Lawyer: Well.. Erhm.. No, sorry..
Nokia: Damn! .. Hey, what about multiple SMS recipients and SMS recipient reports - they must have that!
Lawyer: Uhmm.. Yeah... Lemme see.. No, doesn't have that either..
Nokia: Are you sure this is a phone?
Lawyer: That's what Engadget says. It has some sory of new finger touch UI.
Nokia: Touch UI, eh?! .. Get me the Symbian people on the phone - I'll tell them to make those buttons bigger.
Lawyer: Good idea, sir!
- HottLumpiaz, on 10/22/2009, -13/+42Good. Screw the iphone. I've always preffered Nokias personally.
- czarcasm, on 10/22/2009, -13/+41Wouldn't be the first time Apple stole...
*cough* GUI *cough*
ohhhh yes I did - gerryk, on 10/22/2009, -1/+26Seriously. You don't think it fell from heaven, do you?
- Subduction, on 10/22/2009, -2/+27Yeah, if he'd used iSpell and iProof before he iPosted he wouldn't have this iProblem!
iM unhappy. - gerryk, on 10/22/2009, -0/+23Having worked with some NSN software, I can say without reservation that if it wasn't for Nokia Siemens, there would be no mobile infrastructure.
- mface, on 10/22/2009, -0/+22I'm sure they're discussed this throughly before Nokia decided to sue.
- notthatnoise, on 10/22/2009, -0/+21in some cases, they may not have known about it. in this case, maybe they were negotiating and couldn't come to an agreement. just guesses though, i'm no expert.
- datdamonfoo, on 10/22/2009, -9/+30Go Nokia!
- MatthewDuke, on 10/22/2009, -0/+20After the iphone debuts, Nokia would have to get their patent attorneys to do a huge analysis of what the iPhone did with respect to what their patents covered (months), then they probably had many meetings to discuss what course to take (suing, letting it go, mediation, licensing, etc.), which is a few more months. Then Nokia probably sent Apple's VP of IP a letter informing Apple that Nokia believed Apple was infringing...this likely was ignored by Apple while they had THEIR patent attorneys do the same analysis to determine if Apple was infringing. More months. Then probably another letter from Nokia to Apple...possibly licensing talks start....licensing talks trail off and/or fail....which eventually leads to Nokia's patent attorneys constructing a complaint and filing it in Delaware federal court....after they found a competent Delaware firm to help represent them (more months), because all Apple's attorneys are licensed to practice law in California, not Delaware.
It takes time. - Smokezz, on 10/22/2009, -1/+20Yeah.. seriously.
***** fanboy. If Apple sues another company, you'd be right there flaming the other company for "stealing apples *****" wouldn't you? - Smokezz, on 10/22/2009, -7/+25Obviously they mean implementing those on a cell phone. Funny, when Apple sues someone over a patent, Apple fanboys flame the living ***** out of the company being sued.
- ponzihoff, on 10/22/2009, -1/+18Funny cough.. It sounded kinda like GUI there in the middle..
- roxgod666, on 10/22/2009, -1/+16But when Apple files and sues for patents which they commonly do, they are the messiah right? Get a grip fanboy.
- noumuon, on 10/22/2009, -0/+13"Apple will continue to kick the living hell out of them in the markets where they choose to compete."
lol? nokia is huge worldwide, far larger than apple in the phone market. - notthatnoise, on 10/22/2009, -3/+16surprisingly, you'd lose that wager
- Smokezz, on 10/22/2009, -0/+11Do you understand what a patent is? Apple has lots of the same such things.
- virtualball, on 10/22/2009, -1/+12I think you're confusing WebKit for Safari. WebKit, originally developed by Apple, is the core engine used in a lot of browsers including some Nokia phones.
- Solkre, on 10/22/2009, -4/+15Nokia made Safari?
- rpgmakr, on 10/22/2009, -1/+12I hate the US software patents system (the way it is designed now anyways) but it's always good to see the system ***** apple from time to time. They're dicks.
- fr3nch, on 10/22/2009, -3/+14I have always wondered why companies wait so long after a product release to sue for patent infringements. I know absolutely nothing about patent law, but my intuition would tell me that waiting to sue until after a product is established will allow the company being infringed upon to get more money in damages. Is this right? Why else would a company wait.
- monkeyrun, on 10/22/2009, -2/+12lol that's news to most people on earth....
next thing you know they made MacOS X also... - rockytop9808, on 10/22/2009, -1/+11No one would get into business then, moron.
Read: there would be 0 incentive create new products for anyone. - MacBandit, on 10/22/2009, -1/+11The browser was made by Nokia?
- notthatnoise, on 10/22/2009, -1/+11yeah, because its so douchey to want to protect technology you created
- ohplease, on 10/22/2009, -0/+9?
http://www.theage.com.au/business/apple-bites-over ... - bandomac, on 10/22/2009, -2/+11Uh no, I didn't realize that. Probably because it is unlikely to be true. I will look it up and get back to you on that.
Yeah, I couldn't find any software designed by Nokia for the iPhone. Maybe they did when you flew around the world to turn back time, or maybe the crystals in the Fortress of Solitude have more info. Or maybe you work for Nokia? - roxgod666, on 10/22/2009, -1/+10So you should have no problem saying "***** apple" as well, right?
- RickScarf, on 10/22/2009, -1/+10But without patents what incentive would there be to R&D new products only to have a competitor make an exact copy of your product to sell for a lower price because they didn't have to R&D it? That is why there are patents.
- tnoy, on 10/22/2009, -3/+12Nokia has about 50% of the smartphone market as of Q2 2009.
We could just use statistics like Apple loves to do, like, percentage of capacitive touch-screen phones without a physical keyboard in the US. - gerryk, on 10/22/2009, -0/+9A standard is one thing, the implementation is a whole other.
- notthatnoise, on 10/22/2009, -0/+8no, it wouldn't force companies to make better products, quite the opposite. why spend time developing a better product only to have someone copy it and sell it for less because they didn't have to invest in making it? without patents there is no incentive to make a better product.
- Subduction, on 10/22/2009, -0/+8The joke was that Apple users are douchebags, and Nokia was suing them over that technology.
Sorry, next time I will formulate my cheap shots so they're more clear. - borez, on 10/22/2009, -1/+9No global corporations do, that's why they're global.
- doctordbx, on 10/22/2009, -0/+8Um.. it's because of your ***** up phone network. Don't blame Nokia for that one, the reason their phones support so many bands is because you guys couldn't get your ***** together and form a standard.
- Elranzer, on 10/22/2009, -0/+7The iPhone is groundbreaking? Because it has a shiny logo of a fruit on the back?
There were more advanced phones out before the iPhone came out. They were just in other countries, mainly Japan. - phoomp, on 10/23/2009, -0/+7Apple certainly seems to be of the opinion that the IP rights of others don't apply to Apple.
- Boondoggle, on 10/22/2009, -1/+8Yes but you know not of what you speak, so you might as well calm down.
- TMFinept, on 10/22/2009, -0/+7It's also worth noting that Nokia didn't actually lose any money. The writedown was non cash. Nokia increased its bankroll by several hundred million Euro this past Q and generated over 600M Euro in free cashflow. NSN isn't even losing that much money. Tens of millions of Euro.
This writedown only reflects the apparently impaired value in the part of the NSN joint venture that Nokia owns. NSN is a serious concern for Nokia, but Nokia's hardly in the gutter as a result. By the way, I think that IFRS allows goodwill impairments to be reversed in the future... Although I doubt NSN would ever warrant that.
I wonder if Nokia might spin off NSN... or buy it wholesale from Siemens. - FairDinkumMate, on 10/22/2009, -1/+7@bandomac - So you think that's it OK for Apple to use patented Nokia technology without a licensing agreement?
If not, then maybe you should save your comments until after the courtcase is decided, or actually settled, because I think you'll find that's what happens. Nokia is suing because they believe that Apple has infringed on their patents covering technology that they spent a huge amount of R&D money developing.
IF this is true(& I'm not saying it is or it isn't), then it would show that Apple is stealing rather than innovating their way into the market. You are correct in that Apple have been very innovative with many products(or parts thereof), but that doesn't allow them to steal other parts from someone else. - notthatnoise, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6oh i'm sorry, that is actually funny then.
- bandomac, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6I can get behind that idea.
- ponzihoff, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6Of course they're American! What else - Danish or maybe even Finnish!?? That's just rubbish.. U.S.A! U.S.A!
Where should I look it up? On this new Golgos or Gologe or whatever it is called? - akeldama, on 10/22/2009, -1/+7@banomac - How did Pippin do in the video game market? Newton in the PDA market? Laptops sold versus Dell, HP and Acer? Operation System installs versus Windows? Apple TV in the set top box market? SAN? Servers?
Worldwide smartphone handsets sold: Symbian 52%, RIM 17%, Windows Mobile 12% and iPhone 8%.
Your argument is invalid and ridiculous. - coachmcguirk, on 10/22/2009, -2/+8My, aren't we inquisitive?
- BubblesTheChimp, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6I prefer nachos with jalapenos.
