No guy in a coma, no missed iPhone launch
engadget.com — Didn't think we'd have to bother debunking something this obviously satirical, but about a zillion people have tipped us today with a link to a post on iPhone Savior about "Geoff Evila," who reportedly went into a coma in early June, causing him to miss the iPhone launch he had been so eagerly awaiting.

- zybch, on 10/22/2007, -21/+13But Oh My!!! The appletards dugg the story up like there was no tomorrow.
Are they really THAT insecure?!- streak, on 10/22/2007, -8/+14A: No, but you clearly are, as evidenced by your post.

- streak, on 10/22/2007, -1/+1Yeah, it's a sad statement when the likes of engadget that uncovers a fraud.
- sam10685, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1Hmmm-- yeah... Didn't think this was true because seven years ago, I was in a coma for about 2 and a half months and I can guarantee you nobody in a 4-month long coma would be able to be fully mobile like that after just a few weeks.
- danz32, on 10/22/2007, -15/+4LOL @ alot of ppl (including me who digged the original story)

- Displace, on 10/26/2007, -4/+29Seeing how many diggs the original article got, it is obviously not obviously satirical...
- zybch, on 10/22/2007, -8/+2No. It just shows that digg is overrun by freaking appletards who will digg ANYTHING about Apple no matter if its true, blatantly fake, a rumor, or anything else.
They're so pathetic!- amyfamb7, on 10/22/2007, -0/+5I dugg the article and I'm not an appletard. It was just nice to hear that someone did something nice for a buddy that had a rough few months. Sucks that it wasn't real though :(
- kodybryson, on 10/22/2007, -1/+2I agree. I dugg it. I thought it was sweet. The only part that confused me was (and I haven't gone back to check) they mentioned something about him not realizing that all the cheering was just for him. I assumed that meant he had some sort of brain damage they hadn't mentioned, which I thought was very sad and more reason to digg.
I think it's nice that everyone dugg it. - EmperorAwesome, on 10/22/2007, -1/+2It wasn't really funny or clever, didn't think anyone would bother putting creative energy into making it up, so I didn't even question it.
- goldfishey, on 10/22/2007, -1/+2I buried it as a fake, and just not funny enough to keep alive. It might have been satire - it just wasn't good satire.
- zybch, on 10/22/2007, -8/+2No. It just shows that digg is overrun by freaking appletards who will digg ANYTHING about Apple no matter if its true, blatantly fake, a rumor, or anything else.
- DannySpace, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1Looks like Chuck Ufarlie strikes again!
- ignitethefire, on 10/23/2007, -0/+13Just an observation, but I think Digg would be a lot better if people would make a better attempt at verifying their story first, rather than trying to pip someone at the post by getting the story up first.
- hellogoodbye, on 10/23/2007, -0/+11Editors aren't always a bad thing.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/22/2007, -7/+3Since when are Digg users investigative journalists?
- ignitethefire, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2I would give most Digg users the benefit of the doubt as to check a story for being fictitious before posting. Using your logic though, how should one decide what is a factual story, and what is not?
- chrisutley, on 10/23/2007, -7/+8I was in a coma until they laid an iPhone in my hand, now I'm alive with pleasure.
- dvsbastard, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4"Alive with pleasure"?!?!
Are you sure thats your iPhone in your hand (or is that just what you call it)?! - zybch, on 10/22/2007, -3/+2Perhaps the 'pleasure' refers to the appleteat the guy is sucking upon.
- dvsbastard, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4"Alive with pleasure"?!?!
- hellogoodbye, on 10/22/2007, -3/+5I had a feeling this was a fake...
- zdiggler, on 10/22/2007, -1/+7Read the comments on the ones with 2000+ Diggs and it debunked. People on here don't do research,
Apple, iPhone = must DIGG
I'm pretty sure Apple fanboys here have multiple accounts to digg at apple stories.- zybch, on 10/22/2007, -6/+1Of course they do. Not only that, but apple stories seem to require fewer diggs to reach the front page in the same period than stories in ANY OTHER category!
- nephari, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2I agree that Apple has somewhat of an annoying fan base, but most people who like Apple products aren't the crazy, brainwashed fanatics you make them out to be. Also, the part of Apple fans to whom you are referring is rivaled only by people like yourself who are so needlessly and vehemently opposed to it.
- dubmix, on 10/22/2007, -0/+0Totally agree!!
- bingobongony, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2Then how come you dugg it, and didn't express your theory that it might be fake then?
Liar.

- Alex2, on 10/23/2007, -2/+28This story has a pic, so it must be true as well...
- hammerpants, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1PIC = Happened
- Tralobyte, on 10/23/2007, -0/+13I like how the original story is still getting more diggs even with this story on the front page.
- zdiggler, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6Just show you how QUALITY of Digg has gone down doesn't it?
- arcticblue, on 10/22/2007, -0/+4Exactly the reason I went back to Slashdot and only come here when I'm bored.
- zdiggler, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6Just show you how QUALITY of Digg has gone down doesn't it?
- Dylson, on 10/22/2007, -3/+1HAHA FAIL!
- omarciddo, on 10/22/2007, -8/+3This is a story debunking another story!
- chaparyan, on 10/22/2007, -1/+7what tipped you off?
- omarciddo, on 10/22/2007, -2/+6The title!
- INTERNETMASTER, on 10/26/2007, -6/+23how did the original story get 2500 diggs. even if it were true it's a stupid story.
- zdiggler, on 10/22/2007, -5/+15Most of the people are digg are apple fan boys and they will digg at anything apple.
- zdiggler, on 10/22/2007, -5/+15Most of the people are digg are apple fan boys and they will digg at anything apple.
- Tapewormz, on 10/22/2007, -4/+8Boy, is he ever going to be pissed in a couple of months when APPLE recreates the price drop that choked all the fanboys out there.
- buckeye45, on 10/22/2007, -7/+1Steve Denots, his best friend, is 'Stoned' backwards.
- goofygarber, on 10/22/2007, -0/+8Holy ***** thanks for being the 300 millionth person to point that out.
Get this, people have legs!- zybch, on 10/22/2007, -1/+4Legs you say....
- SyntraFTW, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1BLASPHEMY!
- goofygarber, on 10/22/2007, -0/+8Holy ***** thanks for being the 300 millionth person to point that out.
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 10/22/2007, -3/+1Oh.
- tamgoose, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1haha, the dude that commented on the engadget page..
"does it play doom?" .. hohoho ;D - Zuhsz, on 10/22/2007, -0/+4Geez, I almost dugg that article. Thankfully feel good stories make me have to poo.
- techweenie1, on 10/26/2007, -3/+4Kind of like the time Cartmen was frozen and missed the launch of the Nintendo Wii...oh wait that isn't real either.
- clak, on 10/22/2007, -6/+4No, this story is definitely real. And no one will convince me it's fake. Do you think George Washington really cut down that cheery tree? No, but it's okay because it makes us all feel good and that is what's important.
- frostw, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it makes me cheery.
- techweenie1, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2mmm Cherries...
- frostw, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it makes me cheery.
- psiDevil98, on 10/22/2007, -4/+8Pics and it didn't happen.
- Speed, on 10/23/2007, -0/+13I think it would actually be interesting to look at who dugg the original story or submitted a comment saying "good for Apple" and such, and see how many of those people are now saying "I knew it was fake"
- zybch, on 10/22/2007, -3/+9All of them, because we all know that the only thing that scares apple-fans/retards more than a command line is having to admit that they were wrong, fooled by an obviously fake joke blog.
But I guess thats what happens when you attach yourself to the teat of a company whos sole goal is to make computers for idiots!
- zybch, on 10/22/2007, -3/+9All of them, because we all know that the only thing that scares apple-fans/retards more than a command line is having to admit that they were wrong, fooled by an obviously fake joke blog.
- Codee, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3Dugg for:Earl Sorel.
- handheldchimp, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1I love how someone actually put the time and thought into this...
Both the time and thought into thinking up the entire "Guy in a Coma" story, and he time and though someone put into figuring out it was fake...- nedaf7, on 10/22/2007, -0/+0[t t] < Here, you dropped these.
- chrisutley, on 10/22/2007, -7/+1You know you've done your job as an Apple fan boy when your post is in double digit negative diggs. Keep de-digging suckers, long live Steve Jobs!
- arcticblue, on 10/22/2007, -0/+8Are you on drugs?
- OrangeTide, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3I'm wondering too. he doesn't even make sense. I want some of those drugs too
- arcticblue, on 10/22/2007, -0/+8Are you on drugs?
- sbgskl, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6Aside from all that name detective work, there's the simple fact that the source of the story, iPhone Savior, states that they are a satire website:

- OrangeTide, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3How do you know they didn't digg it up because they thought it was a joke? Also digg has ALWAYS been like this.
- bingobongony, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2I am not sure how far back you are talking about with "old digg", but for the last year and a half at least this has been going on.
- OrangeTide, on 10/26/2007, -0/+11What was the point of all that? It's not even satire (lacking any relevance to a flaw in society or the human condition)
- bingobongony, on 10/26/2007, -4/+1Uhhhh, yeah, that would be a flaw. IF you don't see it, then you have the flaw. But we already knew that by yor Digg history
- mrgoat, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1Satire:
1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.
2. a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule.
3. a literary genre comprising such compositions.
I thought it was just irony Americans didn't understand.
- bingobongony, on 10/22/2007, -3/+2IT is nothing knew for Diggers to be taken in by an obvious ***** article. Happens several times a day.
- zongamin, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3'knew'
- doitchinkstyle, on 10/22/2007, -2/+1psh that coma probably saved him $200 bucks from the price drop. haha lucky man.
- macpro2006, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1you can tell this pic was taken a long time ago because all the new iPhone Boxes have the iTunes Wifi app on it and in the pic of him "last week" its missing. This is not true at all. Sorry. Its just something I wanted to point out. Go Engadget!
- MrIso, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1I bought an iPhone 2 days ago and it didn't have the iTunes Wifi app icon on the box, So no, you can't go just by that.
- mach32, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1some here are such tools
- roodammy44, on 10/22/2007, -1/+1This is the worst story ever to make number 1 of the top stories
- nomoreink, on 10/26/2007, -1/+1I knew it was fake. That pic was obviously shopped.
- adamrgolf, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1i can tell by the ipixels
- solid12345, on 10/24/2007, -1/+2When I first heard the price of the iphone I passed out, hit my head and fell into a coma.
- ECBBER, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Hahaha. Apple fan boys dig a link that they think celebrates their ridiculous fanaticism. O wait that was a satire, you were digging a link that mocked your ridiculous fanaticism.
- thenewtechguy, on 10/22/2007, -0/+0lol this is just too funny but some people are laughing all the way to the bank by unlocking the iphone and reselling it.
- Dorian822, on 10/26/2007, -0/+2*shrug* I don't find it lame people believed it, I find it lame anyone found any reason to pull it. Maybe it's because I survived a similar incident (sans the coma) I didn't think anyone would find this satirical in any way. Ah well, nothing like using the inklings of generous human spirit we have left to get a rise, eh?
- iRaachie, on 10/22/2007, -0/+0Considering the inconsistencies in the story, I'm not surprised, nor did I believe it. He "woke up" knowing that he missed the launch, so I'd be confused as hell if they recreated the launch again.
Did I go into a Coma, or do I star in NBC's JOURNEYMAN? - ubergeek09, on 10/22/2007, -0/+0This isn't a surprise, you would have to be crazy to care that much about a over hyped phone that can't even copy and paste.
- pirnotsquare, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0Did anyone care to notice that not only does the last name of the individual spell "Alive" backwards, but the first name backwards can be (loosely) phonetically pronounced "Effigy?"
- dgcrazykid, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2I said it as fake because I work at the Apple store in chandler. LOL. I just wish I read it sooner so you all could have seen my coment.
- dugem1, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1That's great find
