- Gloony, on 11/14/2007, -27/+460So, lemme get this straight:
Wait for Flash. Wait for 3rd party programs. Wait for network choice. Wait for decent non-gateway internet through said network. Wait for widespread Wi-fi adoptance. Wait for it to charge every day.
Tell you what I'm going to do: Wait for another smartphone. - FTLJohnson, on 10/11/2007, -18/+159How is this even possible? If it's a full version of Safari, running on a full version of OSX, how can it not support Flash?
If it doesn't even support flash... It's not really running full versions of applications.. and then how the HELL can Apple justify a $500-600 price tag?
I forsee that price will drop QUICKLY and Apple is going to eat a bullet on this one if this is true. The multi-touch screen isn't THAT great. - flag564, on 11/14/2007, -24/+162Needless hype + Fanboy astroturfing + Apple logo = $600.00
It's called Mac Math! - rcran, on 10/11/2007, -14/+105Alot of new mobile phones run flash, dumbass.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -30/+114> Tell you what I'm going to do: Wait for another smartphone.
I would rather have said "Wait for an actual smartphone" because the iPhone is no smartphone or simply buy an existing smartphone. - Namarrgon, on 10/11/2007, -7/+73"it's a full version of Safari, running on a full version of OSX"
It's no such thing. You've fallen victim to Jobs' infamous RDF: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reality_distortion_field
It's ludicrous to think that anything more than the core of OSX + Safari could be squeezed onto a handheld device with a fraction the memory & power of a full-sized Mac. Yet the RDF effect leaves people thinking that somehow, Apple have achieved the impossible, and assuming that therefore the iPhone will do everything their Mac can do as a result. - elvenseven, on 10/11/2007, -13/+75iPhone seems to also not support Java!
http://www.digg.com/apple/Jobs_Nobody_uses_Java_anymore_It_s_this_big_heavyweight_ball_and_chain - xpankrat, on 10/11/2007, -4/+61it just keeps getting better. what else is going to be unavailable on this revolutionary gadget i wonder.
- gummih, on 10/11/2007, -6/+57My phone is two years old, it's not very sexy but it has a 640px wide touchscreen and an Opera browser with FLASH (Nokia 7710). I've been using it for TWO years for crying out loud - it's obsolete. Do better Apple.
- Kdurrty, on 10/11/2007, -3/+42I'll sum it up for everyone... :(
- SamKellett, on 10/11/2007, -4/+38If they aren't going to be bothered to release their own SDK, they can at least make Safari as nice as possible for us.
/Shame Apple - flag564, on 10/11/2007, -8/+39Youtube was sold for a BILLION. Care to guess what it used?
Hint: It wasn't VRML. - salmonmoose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32"Right now the premier development scripting language for AJAX apps is likely Ruby on Rails which is now fully bundled with Leopard as well as Ruby 1.8.6 (even though I think the current version is 1.9). So basically the release of the safari 3 beta to Windows is really just Apple giving everyone the SDK for iPhone 3rd party apps."
I'd suggest the premier scripting language for AJAX is Javascript, seeing as, well, that's what the J stands for ;) - mikesbaker, on 11/14/2007, -6/+34but the commercial said the real internet not some watered down mobile version. Bait and switch apple bait and switch.
- myfanwy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27hey, have a look ot openmoko.org
flash support of some variety will be there, plus wi-fi, an open-source linux OS, unrestricted access for developers, and a much higher res screen
only $350, no rip-off at&t contract needed, released oct/nov - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25The Macboys are panicking
- agallagher00, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21This is the iPhone mini, because it's basically a stripped down version of what we thought we were getting in January.
- pnrl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Opera Mobile does support Flash (http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/07/04/)
Who's got the 'almost looks like the Internet internet' now? - ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Read the other story: NO MMS.
Some idiot fans will say "well there is e mail", good luck to call your recipient to check his/her mail and your photo, if not blocked by some stupid spam filter will be there. - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19"But I'm glad it doesn't. Why? Flash is proprietary."
So is EVERYTHING else on the iPhone. Adobe is doing a great job with making Flash as easy to develop as possible. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Let me spell it for you scottag: Y O U T U B E
- latz, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21God, those iPhone News just make me sad, I had trust in apple and hoped they would bring out THE phone of the year, but I guess with no SDK, no 3g and now no flash support, this phone is just going to be a big flop, which is bad for the company. Now I am happy that I didn't buy Apple stocks when they first announced the iPhone....
To sad though, I actually wanted to buy an iPhone, but I guess I have to switch to something different then. - ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Nokia 9300 runs Flash, it is from 2004 I guess. Sony PSP added flash via software update. I can't comment on this, it is beyond me. 2007 phone having 300+ Mhz CPU has no Flash.
- thealliedhacker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16"Alot of new mobile phones run flash, dumbass."
That's because they use Opera. - frankietears, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Leopard was delayed for this brilliant mobile OS?
- Spanca, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20^ That's rubbish. Name me some Apple products from recent years where the 2nd gen has gone anywhere but DOWN in price.
- das7282, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Is anyone else getting extremely sick of hearing about the iPhone all the time or is it just me?
- cybermort, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13the full safari engine doesn't include flash... thats an adobe plug in. right now the ONLY flash plugins for OS x run on either Intel or PPC, I believe the iPhone uses ARM processors. The current plugins will not work until someone either ports flash player 7 for ARM architecture (Flash 7 is opensource) or Adobe helps Apple out. Another solution would be including on the iPhones OSx a rosetta type translator from x86 to ARM but the performance of this would be just awful.
- webProgrammer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Would you DIGG PEOPLE stop digging down intelligent comments, even if you don't agree with them?!? Its fodder to keep the conversation moving forward.
That being said, lesnadyk.. Since Apple is making the platform closed, FLASH is/was the way developers could build graphically rich interfaces for use w/ the phone.. now apple is shutting THAT door too..
Let me spell it out for you..

If you look at Adobe's actual download page: "for all Windows Mobile 5 and Pocket PC 2003 devices."
Pocket PC 2003 is an old version of Windows Mobile. I have the plugin running on WM5. It also works fine on WM6 I believe.
Although you do need Opera browser (or an .flv player) to get Youtube working on Windows Mobile because it doesn't load in Pocket IE. But at least you have the option of using Opera... unlike the iPhone. - MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -6/+18Does the iPhone have its own Digg category yet?
- Sminman, on 10/11/2007, -12/+23Yeah forget the iPhone.
I was gonna get one but it just seems like it's not really worth it anymore... guess I'll stick with my RAZR. - Zippo, on 10/11/2007, -8/+18I'm hopeful for the iPhone, and I do think it'll take off, but not just yet. The iPod didn't become as popular as it is today until around the time of the 4G models, and (more importantly) the iPod Mini.
The iPhone is currently limited to GSM, one service provider in one country, and unless you have access to a lot of WiFi hotspots or your hometown has city-wide WiFi, you're going to pay a handful for monthly mobile Internet access.
Once the iPhone becomes available to all providers, more types of networks, and city-wide WiFi or WiMax becomes more abundant, then I see the iPhone really taking off. Lowering the price a little couldn't hurt either. - sirdaz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14@thinkdifferent
"Adobe would have to write the Flash plugin for the iPhone"
What?? Adobe doesn't have to do *****. They provide plugins already for browsers, and a light version for phones and the like. If Apple want the plugin supported, they have to change there own software to work with it. - toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9this is from the iphone site
"iPhone lets you see any web page the way it was designed to be seen."
really? ANY. hmm oh yeah "any" except for the millions of flash websites. and the millions more of websites that use flash. - prockcore, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10My 3 year old Sony Clie supports flash, and it's even smaller than the iphone.
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"the iphone is easily the most impressive consumer electronics device to emerge since the ipod."
Hi Steve! :-p - Azimuth1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10What about all that propaganda about iPhone not having a "watered down" version of the Internet? I can't believe they would go through all that to convince us that it's the real Internet just as it is on a computer, and then admit this. What the hell, Apple?
- dshPls, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I can chime in too, on my HTC 8525 I have flash, and a ***** memory card slot! I can also remove my battery and download thousands of applications (got a 4gig .rar off of Bittorrent recently.) If you're looking to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a phone, shop around, don't be fooled by the logo.
- agallagher00, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14Ladies and gentlemen, the full fledged faster than any browser iPhone internet!! Except with EDGE and no Flash!
This is the official nail in the coffin for me. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15No Flash means no interweb. Everybody uses flash Steve, from ads to a simple button. And what's next Steve, that we could not browse myspace, friendster and even DIGG because your portable safari can't handle javascript?
- qpid, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14The Mac Mini - the PPC version was $499 and then the intel one became $599
- myfanwy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9on the other hand, it is an encouragement for people to buy gen 1, and then upgrade to gen 2
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Duh! Ease of use and compatibility of the browser is one of main selling point of the iPhone. Steve even claim that safari portable "is the most advanced web browser ever on a portable".
- gummih, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I own the Nokia 7710, it has a 640*320 touchscreen - It's so old it's in Nokia's archive

Well, lookee here, an article from 2004 about an Asus pda phone with VGA resolution:

Or here's a Sharp one from 2005:

Not to mention the various other ones from the likes of HTC.
Do your flies up please, your ignorance is showing. - johnbellone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8YouTube isn't the only flash website. Haven't you heard?
- adambair, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8@scottag
Here's another spelling.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs told the New York Times that "you might see" Flash support come to iPhone, but YouTube support would be present regardless.
"Yeah, YouTube -- of course," he said. "But you don’t need to have Flash to show YouTube. All you need to do is deal with YouTube. And plus, we could get ‘em to up their video resolution at the same time, by using h.264 instead of the old codec." - ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Flash is not just for Video, it is not for stupid jumping up and down smileys too. Flash is slowly becoming the standard for rich, standard web UI and entire Service/Ajax etc. stuff.
Check http://g.ho.st , they did a complete desktop computer via Flash and Ajax.
It looks like Apple didn't like the Flash audio capabilities, you know, something like iTunes runs inside flash application.
In fact, check Sony PSP scene to see what can be done with Flash. Even streaming radio is possible. -
