- skinfitz, on 01/03/2008, -5/+113"Called Copy-and-Paste, this innovative feature lets the user take any piece of text on the screen, select it and then copy it to a temporary memory buffer, which Apple is calling the ClipBoard™. From there, the text can be re-inserted anywhere else. Why would you want this? Well, imagine being able to Copy-and-Paste a piece of a web page into an email, for example. The possibilities are endless" - Source: Wired.

- lhughey, on 01/03/2008, -14/+66how innovative!
- Darrelc, on 01/03/2008, -16/+65Forgive me for seeming like a troll but my 3 year old symbian phone could do these, even the flash thing with a plugin I think. no MMS? No recording video? why not?
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -11/+56Sick of these fanboy hype stories. I have an iPhone, iMac and MacBook but I really wish people would stop posting this crap. As we've seen in the past, no report is true until it is actually announced by the company.
Buried as inaccurate. - SRSco, on 01/03/2008, -1/+46Because one day she might send a nipple.
- helmsb, on 01/03/2008, -2/+38As far as MMS. I hate the viewmymessage.com thing. it would not be that bad if you could just click a link and it showed up. I am going to spin this and say that more phone manufacturers should STOP supporting MMS and start supporting email. MMS is crippled pay per message email. I think we need to push for wider email support and an easy way to send these emails to phones a system like teleflip. I send so many pics to my friends with iphones because email is so easy, I always had trouble sending and receiving MMS with my old Cingular 8125.

- Ymeg, on 01/03/2008, -2/+32Copy-Paste is good, but the real challenge is if they can pull off Copy-Pasta.
- MrSarcasm, on 01/03/2008, -25/+51iPhone, ***** yeah! introducing a feature that was a no-brainer to be included in the original release half a year ago. and now this story will hit the top 10 after hitting the front page. And you say Microsoft has evil strategies on the market?..
(not that I wouldn't buy an iPhone when it's sold in my country though) - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -4/+25I think calling it MMS doesn't have the same impact as saying "a picture phone that can't send and receive pictures to and from other picture phones."
- chris9902, on 01/03/2008, -6/+25because they'd have nothing to market with the iPhone2
- yawnstretch, on 01/03/2008, -3/+21Surprises me the immaturity of most of the comments regarding cut and paste on the iphone. Most of the commenters obviously have little experience with day-to-day use of the iphone. There's a pretty good reason why we dont have copy and paste on the iphone. It's not as simple as just drawing a mouse cursor across a line or two of text because the iphone "mouse" doesn't have the distinction between moving and scroll selecting.
If they implement this it will mean adding a new button to relevant apps on the iphone. I don't like crap loads of app buttons on my iphone screen and to be honest I can live without copy and paste on a phone. - pierre, on 01/03/2008, -5/+23You are comparing it to the features of a regular computer ... its a PHONE people....
- agarfield2004, on 01/03/2008, -4/+22The interesting thing now is how they are going to interface it.
- Wolfboy, on 01/03/2008, -2/+19And the sarcasm flies overhead...
(It was pretty awesome on the Apple II around 1983, too.) - BoneStamp, on 01/03/2008, -2/+18Ah yes, 1975... The good old days when my cell phone would connect to the internet, allow me to buy music and then listen to it. All from the backseat of my brand new Buick with the 8 track player.
- dasluvaluva, on 01/03/2008, -1/+16Yes, we all know the iPhone is lacking some features that are now standard in other Smart Phones. The thing that's important to note is that the iPhone is a software upgrade away from adding really cool new features. I've yet to have a phone that improved its feature-set as significantly just via a software update. Bug fixes, sure, but for major features, I've always had to buy the next model up.
- skinfitz, on 01/03/2008, -6/+20Really? No control? And just what SDK would Adobe use to develop a version of Flash for the iPhone please?
- enclaved, on 01/03/2008, -3/+17Forgive me for possibly asking something that could have an obvious answer, but I do not own an iPhone. I am curious as to what the hell everyone is wanting to copy and paste on their phone so badly that they denigrate a company for not including, what seems to be a non-issue feature, at least to me. It's obvious that some people are so offended that they can't copy and paste that even after Apple gives them what they want, they still bitch and moan about it and I don't understand that at all. I can't copy and paste on my cellphone either, am I really missing out on some copy and pasting revolution, how much text are you inputting into the few features the iphone comes with that you need to be able to replicate that text constantly?
- skinfitz, on 01/03/2008, -2/+16No version that works on ARM chips eh?

Ever hear of compiling code for a different CPU? Helps a lot if you have an SDK of course... - Stucarius, on 01/03/2008, -0/+13I am surprised some of you morons have the intelligence to use this forum. You are not even close to understanding what makes the iPhone different and why some features could not be implemented until the necessary security features were deployed.
I have owned darn near every gadget worth having for 25 years and the iPhone is by far the best hand held device yet developed. Even with its flaws and current shortage of 3rd party apps it blows away the competition.
Both Apple and Microsoft have their problems but at least Apple is responsive to them even if they do not publicly express them. Leopards issues started being fixed the day after its release and now are mostly resolved. iPhone customers got rebates. Nearly unheard of. Their support department answers the phone in seconds with competent technicians and their systems run the competitions products better than the systems they were designed for. Any resonable observer can clearly see Apple is doing an amazing job (no pun) these days. Lets see how long it last.
Vista is over a year old now and Microsoft still has not done anything about legion of issues. I am quickly coming to the conclusion it is not repairable and MS knows it.
As far as other smart phones go they are clunky, unreliable, have huge battery problems, do not last worth a crude, will never be more than they are when bought, are lousy web devices and are so poorly designed that even the ones with nice features are nearly unusable by most customers. - znicket, on 01/03/2008, -0/+13Yes - but User Interface is everything. I wouldn't like to drive a Merc if the seats and interior were made by Fisher Price.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -4/+16I agree its ***** that they have a phone that cant do MMS, Im sick of going to "view my message.com"
- NorthKorea, on 01/03/2008, -4/+16he's right. this is ***** *****...
- mrgreen4242, on 01/03/2008, -1/+13I agree with whoever it was about that said we should be pushing for phone manufacturers to stop supporting MMS and supporting email instead. Rather than pay $0.10-0.50+ per "picture message" we should be able to simply email as many photos to whatever device we want for "free" (within the confines of your selected dataplan).
- vano21, on 01/03/2008, -6/+17Seriously get an iPhone and a Symbian (say the E61i) side by side and just try browsing digg with both. Also try sending and receiving emails. Anyone who tries this will know that although E61i (or other Symbians) offer more featrues, the experiences are not even comparable. Symbian is slow, sluggish and has a horrendous user interface compared to iPhone. I also double dare anyone who can browse digg for a while without crashing their e61i. I know all of this because I have both.
- Radar3D, on 01/03/2008, -1/+12RAmen.
- dcormier, on 01/03/2008, -0/+11Unlikely to be seen. That would cut into revenue from SMS messages.
- oort, on 01/03/2008, -1/+12also needs, (so I can scrap my blackberry)
1)SSH client, that is running locally on the phone
2)Email alerts (that I can assign ringtones(and visual alert) to specific critical work emails that I have to respond to in middle of night)
3)IRC, IM client, (with an interface like xchat)
4)flash support
5)support for (at least) java applets
6)SDK to allow creation of applications at the functional level of an ssh client or an email client.
7)support for 3rd party java applications. - dagamer34, on 01/03/2008, -0/+11It's a phone, not a fking professional digital camera.
- mysql101, on 01/03/2008, -0/+11In case you weren't aware, 1, 2, and 3 are available if you jailbreak your phone.
- Luminoth, on 01/03/2008, -2/+12I must be in the minority here because I'd rather not see 4, 5, and 7 happen.
- Chewie67, on 01/03/2008, -2/+12I'm against anything that include 'java'.
Write using the SDK that Apple is developing. Java continues to be bloated and slow. I don't need it on my iPhone. - skinfitz, on 01/03/2008, -3/+13Oh and one difference between Google and Adobe is that Google doesn't have to be afraid of pissing Apple off. Google doesn't need Apple but a considerable chunk of Adobe's business depends on their software working on Apple hardware.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -5/+15Sorry to be the jerk here, but after using my iPhone since June 29th, I can't remember a single instance I have ever needed to copy paste.
Can anyone tell me where this will be used? - fani, on 01/03/2008, -4/+13Yay ! Release a tiny feature that should've been there to begin with and laud it like the second coming of Christ.
Freaking Apple. Dammit. Release all of this man -
full bluetooth support
voice dialling
speed dialling
MMS
True GPS
Video recording
Flash support - happyseamonster, on 01/03/2008, -7/+16Now I can die and my life will be complete.
- uppedbyhiggins, on 01/03/2008, -1/+9You need to retire your teen angst.
- Micoderre, on 01/03/2008, -5/+13Flash support would be nice, but I'm willing to wait on Adobe if the end result is a fast, battery-friendly iPhone client. What folks with Flash plug-ins on other phone platforms don't like to tell you is that those versions tend to be a bit slow, crash-prone and battery-whorish. Replace Adobe with Sun and this pretty much describes my feelings on Java support, as well.
Cut-Paste would be neat, but I haven't founded essential yet. It will be a great addition whenever it comes, but it would never have been a dealbreaker for me. Extensive copying of text is just something I don't (and can't imagine doing with high frequency) on a mobile phone. Still, it would be nice for e-mail, I guess.
MMS is something that doesn't matter to me at all, and it's probably a generational thing. I rarely text, usually only when I need to contact someone late at night and don't want their phone ringin' like whoa. Media texting? Nah, not for me. E-mail works just fine. Of course, YMMV greatly on this topic.
Video is probably the big one here that I'd like to see eventually. Especially if it has a YouTube tie-in similar to the Helio Ocean. 'Important' e-mail alerts, as mentioned by user Oort, would be frickin' awesome. The e-mail client needs to be a bit more robust for me to be completely happy, but it's 'good enough' right now for me. Instant messaging? I can't remember the last time I hopped on AIM, but I wouldn't complain about having the option.
Long story short, the iPhone will probably never satisfy everyone. I guess all the Jesus Phone hype made it a big target and its hard to deliver to people who had been groomed for months to expect nothing less than perfection. When I was looking at new phones back in June and July, I pretty much gave every media and smart phone a look: The BlackBerry would've been nice for work, but its non-corporate features were lacking and I don't need to stay attached to the office 24/7. Also, the interface (minus the scroll) was clunky. Windows Mobile, especially on the HTC sliders, was a big contender. Nice software support. The user interface was a step up from BlackBerry, but the iPhone had little competition from either in that department. Media features were nice, but iTunes support on the iPhone side edged WinMo out on that side. Nokia's N-series was just as expensive as the iPhone, offered more out-of-the-box features, but I felt the implementation was lacking across the board.
I guess my point is, why all the knee-jerk reactions? The iPhone will never appeal to everyone. Same goes for other phones and platforms. If it does what you want, hooray! If it doesn't, there are plenty of other choices out there. Crucifying the Jesus Phone just makes you seem petty. Which, mind you, is not to say that the iPhone is immune from criticism. - RedHerringHack, on 01/03/2008, -5/+13Unlike other picture phones, you are not having to buy a new one to get new features. Or hack it. I thought the comment was funny, but I love my iphone.
- gregdogum, on 01/03/2008, -14/+22Overall this 1.1.3 update is going to be badass. Thanks Apple!
- lostarchitect, on 01/03/2008, -0/+8if you believe that the name "zeiss" on a lens means anything nowadays, i have a bridge in brooklyn you might want to buy...
- gordeaoux, on 01/03/2008, -1/+9ok, rick roll is old.
- mrgreen4242, on 01/03/2008, -4/+11Er, so you stagnate for a couple months, meanwhile people have have "jailbreaked" are getting new apps and features weekly if not daily. Firware upgrade comes along and they can either upgrade right away and get the same thing you've been waiting for, or they can wait a few days/weeks/whatever until someone figures out how to let them spend 30 minutes prepping, upgrading, and rehacking to get the same things you're getting, plus all the apps and features you've never had that they've been enjoying for months.
Yup, your way makes so much sense... - PurpleSfinx, on 01/03/2008, -3/+10I'm fairly sure it has that.
