- rnawky, on 04/06/2009, -4/+61I heard the next-gen iPhone can send and receive phone calls. Can anyone confirm this?
- ucuntu, on 04/06/2009, -0/+38I find this easy to believe as every other new Apple product (bar iPod shuffle/nano) uses 802.11n.
- Zippo, on 04/06/2009, -0/+21Well, even if the next iPhone doesn't have 802.11n, there's -inevitably- going to be one that does... so it makes sense to write support for it sooner than later.
- EVILTHETURTLE, on 04/06/2009, -4/+25Both of you make very compelling arguments.
- 5hocker, on 04/06/2009, -2/+20Also supports send/recieve FM radio....

- infinitexx, on 04/06/2009, -0/+13Haven't you heard, nobody wants phones in their phones anymore.
- strictnein, on 04/06/2009, -0/+12Yeah, you really want to disable wifi if you're not using it.
- anexanhume, on 04/06/2009, -0/+11Please be aware the over-arching point of this is the low power benefit, with N capability being an added benefit (especially if it allows your home to go N only).
- sandipc, on 04/06/2009, -2/+13don't go believin' all those rumor sites now
- supermanly, on 04/06/2009, -0/+11Not even Xzibit...
- diggimator, on 04/06/2009, -0/+9Other reasons exist. Apple's AirPort and Time Capsules have supported n and g in the previous versions as well. The new dual band thing has other benefits like using one band for time machine backup or "guest" connection, without sucking bandwidth from the main band. Plus minimum two bands were becoming the industry standard for upper end wi-fi routers: Apple pretty much had to catch up to the rest of the competition.
- superkendall, on 04/06/2009, -0/+9Which is, for better or worse, why Apple is still not allowing background tasks in the official store...
- Commodus, on 04/06/2009, -1/+9It's pretty much a given -- 802.11n mobile chips are rolling out this year, and Apple no doubt wants to push local media streaming and maybe even sync.
- inactive, on 04/06/2009, -0/+6It's going to be an app called Phone. Cost $.99.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 04/06/2009, -0/+6Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
- superkendall, on 04/06/2009, -1/+6But there is a need for lower powered connections to improve battery life. The dual-band thing is beside the point (though actually even that could be useful for large app updates, no so much for browsing as the rendering is the bottleneck).
Never go on record betting against the need for more anything when it comes to digital. - strictnein, on 04/06/2009, -0/+5Who are we talking about here?
- likwidfuzion, on 04/06/2009, -1/+6Why settle for 64GB? I'm waiting out for the 1TB iPhone.
- infinitexx, on 04/06/2009, -0/+5A question,
Does low power mean lower power than the a/b/g antenna or just less power than your average n?
I couldn't seem to find anything indicating this one way or the other. - superkendall, on 04/06/2009, -0/+5In practical terms it's been done for about two years.
- claco, on 04/06/2009, -0/+4Now, if I could also get 64GB of storage in the iPod Touch, I'd buy one tomorrow.
- scootinger, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3No....even if it has the hardware in it, Apple will almost certainly disable it then later charge a fee to owners to use it. Sad.
- scootinger, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3Uh....like how Apple DIDN'T disable Draft-N functionality in many Macs that shipped with the functionality in hardware, then had the gall to charge $1.99 for an "Enabler" to allow the functionality? Or how Apple didn't disable Bluetooth on the 2nd-gen iPod Touch, then decided that they're going to allow it via the $10 iPhone OS 3.0 firmware update?
- TVarmy, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3I doubt it. Apple wouldn't want the iPhone Fone from Belkin to go off the market. That accessory's a real money maker for Belkin, and Apple gets a nice kickback. Besides, where would they put the twitter app button if they added a phone?
- ModernDayDarwin, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3Very cool, makes me wish they were coming to Verizon even sooner.
- supermanred, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2Please God let them not put a video camera into this thing or come out with a tablet iphone. My wallet will not be able to handle this!
- supermanred, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2You do know most of the dudes working on the Pre came from the iPhone development team, right?
- nrox653, on 04/07/2009, -0/+2I think it's fake, since obviously people show little interest in having a phone in their cell phone nowadays. They say texting is getting a major overhaul in the next iPhone though.
- inactive, on 04/06/2009, -4/+6When I first got my iphone and had cracked it, I wondered why my battery was dying literally every 12-18 hours until I figured out there was an app that was constantly looking for wi-fi signals and drained the battery down...fast.
- supermanred, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2No, if the iPhone went with a hard-drive based storage and included a proper video camera then I'll buy one.
- rnelsonee, on 04/07/2009, -0/+2OK, I don't have an iPhone, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I think AT&T doesn't count Wi-Fi as airtime usage. This talks about 802.11n, which is just a new(er) version of the Wi-Fi protocol, which has nothing to do with GSM/cell phone network access.
Basically, it's a low-power chip. It's also faster, but that doesn't mean anything for web browsing unless you have >50Mbps coming from your ISP, which 99% of us don't (802.11g already gives us 54Mbps, so the bottleneck is with the connecting coming into the home, not the router). It will help streaming HD video from computers on your network though. - HappyScrappy, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2I wouldn't get too excited about the low-power aspect. You're just reading that off a spec sheet, and every company would like to say their part is low power. That doesn't mean it actually saves any noticeable power.
- rnelsonee, on 04/07/2009, -0/+2They added it with 3.0 firmware, due out this summer.
- enrq, on 04/06/2009, -1/+2at whatever price?
- OptimismPrime, on 04/06/2009, -2/+3lame techfish is lame
- pamuckraker, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1Skype is the type of product that doesn't jive with either Apple or AT&T's business plans of monopolization. Neither will talk about the alleged federal violations regarding Skype on AT&T's wireless network. For more information on this issue, here is an article to read: http://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/Iphone-S ...
- MiDri, on 04/06/2009, -2/+3I don't think Apple will try to screw Belkin/Griffin by adding FM support, Apple has to be making a cut of at least those 3rd parties profits.
- kinerry, on 04/06/2009, -1/+2It's called saving on your data use. They charge by the MB and limit at 5GB on even the best plans.
Also, these have crazy range and speed gains over the previous generation. - TVarmy, on 04/06/2009, -1/+2I have to say, it is annoying that it isn't done. I can't decide between a good G router or a pre-N router, even though the N router would probably work just fine. It's just that for all the extra expense, I want it to be certain to work well with all other G devices. Reading David Pogue's article on how he couldn't get his 802.11N gear to work up to speed, except for the Apple cards and router, got me worried.
- Baryn, on 04/07/2009, -0/+1A handful of senior employees bailed Apple to work on the Pre. The Pre is far from an iPhone Team product. You philistine.
***** THE AAPL - ***** THE MSIE - rheaume, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1I agree, but for me its for the iphone. Until the batteries and memory have been upgraded, im staying with my bar phone and 32g touch
- supermanred, on 04/06/2009, -1/+2My N stuff works great. Airport Extreme router (A,G,N) and my Macbook Pro. Really fast, I dont connect to ethernet anymore, even when the macbook is sitting on my desk.
Been running N for 3 years now. Nothing draft about it. - TVarmy, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1Yeah, adding FM support doesn't seem like Apple's style. It'd be nice, though. Maybe a third party app will unlock it, but I kinda doubt it. The jailbreakers weren't able to get bluetooth working on the iPod Touch 2G.
- Baryn, on 04/07/2009, -0/+1Again, Pre will be rocking it well before.
- Meocross, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Sad that i got dugg down for the most recognizable Acronym on the freaking internet.
- schnikies79, on 04/06/2009, -5/+5Are they EVER going to finalize the N specs? I'm not messing with draft.
- SteveMax, on 04/06/2009, -1/+1You don't get it, do you? You have to write about anything that can have something to do with the iPhone as soon as possible; then you get page views. When that prediction doesn't come true, repeat it citing a different, independent source, and change a small detail; you'll get more pageviews. Repeat ad infinitum, or until you actually hit it; then you can say you predicted it first, and you get even more page views.
