- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -10/+48It seems like every mouse they make become more useless and confusing.
- DigitalJester, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41Those fingers are hilarious.
- dgblackout, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35i'll stick with my mx revolution.
- Azio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Dear Apple: tactile response is GOOD, please stop putting touch screens/panels on everything.
- BlackAle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I recently used the mouse that ships with the iMac, personally I think it's awful, classic case of design over function.
I'll stick with my 7 year old MS Intellimouse optical... http://www.activewin.com/reviews/hardware/mice/optical/ - DyDx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Talk about "lacking in artistic ability."
- garfonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12oh, those are supposed to be fingers.... now I get it.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Did I left-click?" "No. You middle clicked and scrolled down a bit"
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I don't mind the process of innovation. Somethings work, somethings don't. Not everyone wants to sit on their ass waiting for the future to come. Sometimes you have to do something about it, and risk convenience and familiarity for advancement. Those fingers ARE whack though. I wonder who took the hammer to them.
- DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16we didnt need the touch sensitive crap with the mighty mouse and we dont need a touch sensitive scroll wheel.
nuff said. - maxsunset, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There was a reason everyone hates the mighty mouse; touch sensitivity sucks compared to buttons, at least when it comes to things you dont look at when you use them. You couldnt have your "left click finger" on the mouse and right click at the same time, the scroll ball was too small to be useful, the side buttons were a pain in the ass to use for anything practical, and the shape is getting really old, it's really not all that comfortable compared to even a basic MS, or logitech mouse. Razer FTW!
- tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9i wonder what ET uses his mac for?
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You like them? I drew them with my feet.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Fricken no more touch sensitive mice. The only touch sensitive mouse I want is my touch-pad. See, look, it has 'touch' in its name. Mice need to be tactile and mechanical.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Except the Mighty Mouse, which prevents right-clicking unless you lift your left finger. And has a teensy tiny scroll ball with no tactile response to scrolling, and trying to middle click invariably involves your finger slipping off it and you end up left-clicking.
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think this will show up in laptops a long time before it does in mice. Macbook trackpads are already travelling that road.
- jialuolu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I need tactile response from a mouse. I disabled the squeeze activated side buttons on the Mighty Mouse because I kept accidentally triggering it
- unbreakable, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Next gen??
How abt making a current gen mouse first! - WraythX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@ellisgl - using two fingers you can tap the touchpad to get a right click, and using two fingers you can scroll in any direction. It is very easy to use. The Mighty Mouse also has right click functionality - it is just turned off in the System Preferences by default.
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm pretty much an Apple fanboy, but Apple mice are the absolute worst.
It's the one thing MS does way better than Apple. - SlpingInsomniac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You can turn off tap to click.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I love it, people complain about how touch sensitive controls on a mouse are worse than buttons because of tactile feedback...I feel we'll be hearing this a lot about the iPhone after people have used it practically on a daily basis.
- fredxor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I think the contour map of the mouse is pretty funny. I think the idea is pretty good, but I like my buttons the way they are. I also like my scroll wheel the way it is. Even if the mouse is awesome, it will probably only work on a Mac anyways. I agree that most Mac mice end up sucking.
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Isn't this the same image everyone was using to support the rumor that the mighty mouse would use touch sensitive scroll?
- otherthings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With you on that, amoeba16. If you've ever had RSI, the mouse is a torture device.
I'm all for innovation, but this is beyond stupid. What's next from Apple, a theremin-controlled jackhammer? - ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@themacthinker
Good lord... very definition of "fanboy" right there.
That aside, I think it's pretty obvious that Apple's current direction is all about touch-sensitivity. While the effectiveness of that idea may be questionable (as the above commenters pointed out), kudos to them for having a master plan for their products and sticking to it. - timbtwisted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't we already have something sort of like this called the trackpad on our laptops. This just seems like a bad idea, just make a normal two button mouse that is usable. Bah, I guess we'll see, just as long as it's not shaped like a hockey puck!
- JAWA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Geeze... and I thought an apple mouse was useless now.
BTW, is that an alien hand in the patent drawing? - HUKI365, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love this. I use a bootcamped MacBook and one of the ebst things about it is the abbility to drag two fingers anywhere and get scrolling. So much more instinctive than even using a scroll wheel (because, really, the current Mighty Mouse wheel sucks. Good for being a ball, but just way too small and flimsy.)
However, I hate the "touch click" ability in the OSX side. There are so many accidental clicks. So hopefully they can use some really good tech from the iPhone, because without tactile response it is REALLY hard to use a mouse/trackpad without accidental clicking.
But how good would it be too have an entirely white, ergonomic "blob" sitting on your desk (No buttons!) then be able to use that as a mouse/Wii controller (accelarometer was patented the other month, though apparently not for this purpose).
Oh and the patent drawings? They're always like that. Go look at any other Apple patent story. Or any other patent.
Just about the only thing where the drawings are good is really technical machinery (IE roller locked H&K rifles). - IanPatterson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7amazing, I want one
- sekhui, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4confused apple users incoming.
- Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Get it right and I'm interested. The wireless Mighty Mouse was a very nice mouse with the killer exception that I could not make it consistently right-click 100% of the time. If Apple can sort this problem out then I'm genuinely interested because the Mighty Mouse was very comfortably to use and the click action was very pleasing. However, I do share scepticism on this one because the first and second generation Mighty Mouse continued to mis-detect left/right-clicks.
- tony.pitale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Saw that too. I guess they aren't artists in that department.
- TdiFFRob6876, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My idea for the new Apple mouse was to add a touch scroll sensor where the scroll ball currently is and put the sensor in the shape of the Apple Inc. Logo. It's good to know that technology improves in the right direction with Apple nowadays.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think he means to say that mice need audible feedback of the "click" hence the term "click".
If the mouse does not sound a "click", ones ability to determine if a "click" was successful diminishes.
If there is no visual feedback that the "click" was successful, (like if the computer is lagging badly) then it could be confusing.
I could see them simply making the mouse glow briefly where the button ought-to be. (when clicked) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1apple computer good.. apple mouse bad.. you losers still using a mouse. .get a waccom tablet already (unless you playing games..um ha ha).. yes impractical for a laptop blah blah. a mouse is soooo slow. Seriously mac suck at making them.. they should stick to what they're good at.. making good OS's.. and exploding mp3 players.. leave the mouse to other people. No, wait, --must design new mouse using trendy new technology even if retarded.. ack eek, because mac sales are based on trendy appeal and no new fancy designs = no new trends to appeal to consumers..
- stuf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2TBH, I like the Mighty Mouse. I thought it would be uncomfortable as *****, but I don't know anymore. I like the scroll ball and shape of the mouse.
- gaminggeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about making a mouse the doesnt cripple your hand just looking at it mac mice are the worst has there ever been a good mac mouse?
- Seph7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Touch sensitive scrolling would be a good idea as you would eliminate moving parts on mice which get clogged up with dirt. But multi hand holding and stuff seems a bit strange.
- WraythX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@otherthings - thumbs up for mentioning a theremin :)
- chaskell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"One whole device and they're shoving "touch screens/panels on everything". Sure."
And the Ipod.
Have you ever used a 3G Ipod? The one with no tactile response at all? It's annoying as hell. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bring back the puck mouse!!
- ialan2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From a Google Ad on this page:
"a mouse as easy to use as the imac"
... - WraythX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree about the side buttons and the annoyance of the left finger needing to leave the mouse to right click, but I love the scrollball and have found it better than any other mouse I have had. Now that I am used to the quirks of the Mighty Mouse I find it ok in general but I had a hell of a time getting used to it when I first bought it.
- ohmar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the same problem with my logitech and my room mate gets it on his mighty mouse. Its moreso the result of dust and crap that is on the desk accumulating on the mouse. I am yet to have a solution other than wiping it off daily.
- Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Vidd
How about the iPod scrollwheel? Used to be mechanical but mine is definitely touch sensitive. - nakile, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1On the MBP, you put two fingers on the mouse pad to right click. You also use to fingers to scroll. So yes, your wrong.
- Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I disagree. Touch-sensitivity works fine when it's done right else we'd all be demanding scrollballs on laptops instead of trackpads. The Mighty Mouse's only significant failing was that the detection of the left/righ-clicks was iffy at best. I really did like how the mouse felt in the hand and the click action on it was very pleasant. If they sort out the click detection issue then I'm much rather use that than the Logitech Revolution VX that I am using now, not least because I could then connect to my laptop without any silly dongles or receivers.
- deelirium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey man, I thought that was a friggn' hilarious comment. Dugg up.
