- nacs, on 10/12/2007, -20/+101Then turn off Apple in your preferences moron and stop bitching.
- PostalRIT, on 10/12/2007, -4/+53Apple did release a ton of new stuff today...
It would prolly be the same if MS released Vista / a music player / a new computer all in the same day. - porplem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42The site is going slow so here's what it says:
Open iTunes and hit command - j (not sure what the command is on the PC), this will bring up the view options window. Spotted the new addition(s) yet?
SKIP COUNT!
I’ve been wondering how long it would take Apple to implement such a small but interesting feature and here it is! It will allow you to, over time, build up a subconscious record of what tracks you don’t actually like all that much. Could help when you need to clear out some tracks to free up HD space, but for me it will come in most handy when I’m trying to decide on what songs to include on my pod… sure you could use Play Count to tally up your favourites but I want the songs on the thing to be ones that I really like listening to ALL THE WAY THROUGH (so you don’t have to keep skipping tracks all the time which is my worst pod habit). By balancing up the skips and plays I will now be able to get only my very favourite tracks on my pod, because of this I’d have to say it’s a pretty cool new feature, and iTunes 7 is a worthy download. (Apart from the buggy interface and the re-positioning of certain buttons that is… wtf is up with Apple and beta software these days?! Hope they put some fixes out it soon!) - DiggedBy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Holy Crap rothschild... how much did you pay for itunes? maybe you should ask for your money back. why is the digg community so full of asses?
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -56/+81digg has suddenly turned into the largest repository of "OMG Apple did it!" articles.
- AlexisChazard, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35why don't you calm down and re-install version 6 then ?
(I really have hard time with those PC guys using sleek free software on their 300$ cardboard boxes and becoming insulting since the free thing is displeasing them) - speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21The site is down... their host suspended them.
Here is the duggmirror: http://www.duggmirror.com/apple/New_iTunes_7_SKIP_COUNT_feature/ - Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18As far as I can tell, it only marks a song as "skipped" if you are between 2 and 20 seconds into the song. 0 to 1 seconds or anything over 20 seconds does nothing.
Similarly, skipping to the next song within 9 seconds of the end of the track marks it as a "played".
Also, I noticed it doesn't matter how much of the track you actually listened to, it marks the track based of where the song is at at the moment you skip tracks. e.g. If you listen to the whole song up til right before the end then seek to somewhere in the middle of the song, THEN press the "next track" button, it wont count the track as "played". Same goes for if you seeked back to the beginning of the track and clicked "next track", it would count the song as being "skipped". - melmyfinger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17They also added Last Skipped.
- Crosshare, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17That's a nice little stuffed in feature. This will help me determine my Nano cutdown list much more quickly.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Cool. I refuse to put pickles on hamburgers.

- lostczech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12right click by Name/time/album/etc in any playlist or do ctrl-j
In Mac, obviously, same applies just substitute ctrl with command - nevenmrgan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Wow, I am so impressed.
- Petarded, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Ctrl+J
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's for albums that may have more than one artist on them, like compliations or soundtracks. For example, Album Artist might be Frank Sinatra but the Artist for a particular track might be Frank Sinatra w/Someone Else.

I for one 'have hard time' with windows users who refer to dedicated mac users as fanboys and then follow up with statements like 'OSX sucks'. Your comment is as prickish as the one to which you refer. - da5idblacksun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Sweet.
- NightRush, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11It isnt a command on windows, Its a shortcut. Just go into View>Options. shucks.
- nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Another new feature, in case anyone hadn't noticed:
Sign up for the Music Store (you don't need to buy anything, don't worry - just make an account) and you're then able to go into View and choose 'get album artwork'. It'll search their music database and add album artwork to any albums they have the artwork for. While they didn't have everything they certainly have a hell of a lot.
And I'd recommend going into View and ticking 'Show Browser' too - I always forget you have to enable this manually when installing a new version, and have a moment of "aaaarg they've deleted my favourite feature!" before I remember. - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sweet. I sent this feature request to Apple early this year, for them to add a field for a skip/play ratio, to facilitate cleaning out crap from the iPod (who has time to rate songs, anyways). It's great to see them heed the feedback and add this to iTunes. In fact, most feature requests I send to Apple do get implemented. If you have a feature you would like to see in Apple hardware or software, just fill out a form at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and be sure to be courteous, and explain in detail how you want the feature implemented, and the benefits of the feature, and they will do it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Can someone explain what is "Album Artist" in the ID3 info is? Maybe i'm a little slow...
- MattZed, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14it's nice to see you as well...
- nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10@ xswag
I refuse to buy anything from the iTunes store for a number of reasons. DRM is one of them - overpricing is another; the amount that goes to the artists and the appallingly low-quality bitrate and fact that don't work on mp3 players other than iPods are all other reasons.
But despite all that, iTunes is a respectable media playing software. My library is mostly CDs I've ripped using iTunes to my preference (high-bitrate with no copy protection). Overall it's a good piece of software, and it's wrong to assume all users of iTunes are autonomous with DRM and the tyranny of the RIAA. Most of us just like music and need a means to play it. - nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Try re-downloading it. A lot of people were downloading it this evening, so it's possible it cut out and didn't quite finish downloading.
- nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What does everyone think about changing the green icon to a blue one btw?
It's a little thing, I know, but I think it'll take some getting used to... it looks lame in my Quick Start bar. - rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@nacs
Calm down there, buddy. That wasn't terribly constructive. Try this:
"Digg 3.0 added a feature which allows users to filter out categories which don't appeal to them. Perhaps it would be better if you used that instead of whining like a little crybaby, you goddamn tightly-packed ball of crap!"
See? Much better! - mrg823, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@nogoodreason
The easiest way to get around the DRM for music is to burn what you buy to audio CDs and re-import them into mp3 or another more compatible format (so they work on other mp3 players). Unfortunately that won't solve the problem of the low bitrate, but most people can't tell the difference anyway. And with regard to pricing, I've never found an album in stores or online for cheaper than in the iTunes Music Store.
One more thing--artists don't make much on the sale of their music, whether it's digital or on actual CDs either; most of their income comes from concert ticket sales. - chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For some reason 95% of my music which I ripped pre-iTunes will not retrieve the album art from iTunes. The albums are for sale and have art displayed in the store, but iTunes does not recognize that my copy is the same as the copy they are selling. I wish we knew the formula that compares your local albums to the online albums.
- wjhicks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have been wanting this feature for a long time. I never figured they would actually implement it though :) One question I have for other people is has anyone seen if this info is gathered in their ipod? When I skip a song on my nano the skip count is not incremented. I am assuming that we will need a firmware upgrade to take advantage of this. Or is this a feature that is only going to be available on the new ipods?
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Depends on how much music you have. On my parents' computer it worked fine, but they only have a handful of ripped CDs on there.
- jessethouin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@flag564
If nothing Apple released today is innovative, show me something that is. I will honestly appreciate your comment if you back it up. Negativity shows weakness; pointing out flaws in others without constructive criticism is what children do before they learn social responsibility. - flaroche, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Sweet feature indeed!
Is it me or is scrolling in the two new views a tad on the sluggish side?!? - mhanley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Snyder: "I tried downgrading iTunes to an older version once. It won't let you."
iTunes does create backups of your previous library when you upgrade. Just make a backup of your old library, reinstall v6, and drop in the old library files. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i downloaded the new version on my XP. it said it installed n everything but everytime i try to start itunes it says ' this application could not be opened. there is an unknown error"
ne suggestions?? - LunarFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It is pretty sluggish. Hope this gets fixed in a subsequent release, because overall, I really like it.
- PaxRomana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmmmm....something strange is afoot in the new version of iTunes. My music gets all sorts of distortion if I'm playing them and start scrolling through my library or if I switch between programs...what's happening!
- FreakyT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Amarok doesn't really have a view like that, at least as of version 1.4. An almost identical view, however, is present in Windows Media Player 11.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a bug with my audio hardware, the volume slider causes the song to distort... Very annoying since I use that slider in my taskbar all the time. I like the new features but I am now more excited about iTunes 7.0.1 and all the bug fixes they'll slap into it.
- settsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The same thing was happening to me until I deleted the existing shortcut and made a new one from the original iTunes EXE file.
I noticed that the shortcut that the installer creates is 3K (a normal shortcut is 1K) and is either unintentionally malformed or, as un-Apple-like as it may seem, purposely forces itself upon your desktop and Start menu.
I'm no app programmer, but I did open the 3K shortcut with Notepad and you can see a reference to an installer, whereas the "normal" 1K shortcut I created references only the EXE file.
Anyone with programming abilities and tools care to comment? Does it appear intentional or just something that slid by the QC code monkeys in their haste to make the deadline? - Reno582, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple must have rushed this out
- yohojones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I noticed that too. Why should a program require it's own shortcut folder?
- MikeEFresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PS: Apple screwed the album artist feature up
- oxyrubber, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that a Track Artist is not necessarily the same as an Album Artist.
Perhaps there's a compilation CD you imported... the Album Artist would be "Various Artists" whereas the Track Artist might be "2 Live Crew". "2 Live Crew" performs the song, but did not perform all of the album, hence it would be wrong and clumsy to say "2 Live Crew" should be credited with the whole album.
I've been tracking this IN the album name for years, I'm excited to hear that ID3vX might actually have this implemented, finally. - DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been getting the same thing, between 10-20 seconds into a track I'll get some audio popping. I'll get it again about 50-60 seconds in. If I start the track over, however, the distortion goes away. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's got problems.
- jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1That is very very cool, I use the "My Top Rated" smart playlist (4 and 5 star songs only) as my own personal radio station and this will help me to find the songs I should demote :)
- gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Dunno but its in that windows media thing too:
http://www.softpointer.com/tr_faq.htm#04 - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This feature was already in iTunes 6.
- urs74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1itunes 7 kick ass even on my pc too!
