- TheAtomicMoose, on 10/10/2007, -10/+131Wow! A Radio! The future is here!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Sure thing. That'll be $599, please.
- thehuskerfan, on 10/10/2007, -6/+29Sounds plausible..
- punkrockxtian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20If you hear a song you like while listening to it on the radio, then they give you an option to buy it and listen to it all you want. Whats there to not understand?
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17You DID notice it says digital radio? In the U.S., Digital Radio is also known as HD Radio. This means the new iPods would be able to receive digital radio, effectively one upping other MP3 players...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15On the contrary, it's a great way to browse your music collection when you're not sure what you want to listen to.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11i guess it's a gimmick in the same way that album artwork is just a gimmick. perhaps bands should just put out blank album covers and cd without labels.
- da9boy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14didn't we buy an ipod to not hear the radio?
- androo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13im hoping for one with a larger hard drive. 120 gigs sounds nice.
- LoadStar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I don't buy the Digital Radio item. While the US has "HD Radio" (using technology from Ibiquity), which is technically digital radio, it is an "In Band On-Channel" system that uses FM as a carrier. Plus, it doesn't seem to be of much popular interest, though admittedly this is because limited HD Radio receivers are released, most of which carry a prohibitively high price.
The rest of the world uses DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) which is a totally different technology and wholly incompatible with HD Radio. (The US uses a subset of DAB for satellite radio - but somehow, I highly doubt that the new iPods will become satellite radio receivers.) - kelly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Why would you think that existing iPods could handle this. Its not a firmware issue. It's a hardware issue.
- rlombardo, on 11/05/2008, -6/+13eh, i never would use coverflow...it seems like a real gimmick. It isn't an efficient way to browse for music
- component, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I have an iPod because radio sucks so badly. Please don't go there Apple.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I ocasionally listen to a couple talk radio shows in my morning, thats something only radio can provide.
- Zap2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Um, why would they? If you can get on iTunes, why not let you download it
Apple sometimes doesn't add features, but when they do, its not half arsed - chrislee149, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Obligatory http://how-to-spell-ridiculous.com/
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I'm with you. Jobs gave a really good answer to people who were asking why there wasn't a radio built into the iPod as standard and he basically said that as soon as a feature is introduced, it could never be removed from subsequent hardware revisions and so they had to make damn sure they were doing the right thing - it's why the FM radio was sold separately and not rolled into the iPod.
I don't think Apple could introduce the digital radio and keep it present for *every* revision from now on, technologies change too fast. What if down the line a new type of digital radio is introduced which needs a chipset that sucks too much power, or needs a huge antenna or adds too much bulk or adds too much to the price? Apple would either have to remove a feature, raise prices or use an old tech, all of which they would be loathe to do. - tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5DID YOU ***** READ WHAT HE SAID? He said free radio (Which happens to legally be free) and un-DRM'd MP3's (meaning ripped songs). Do you accuse everyone who doesn't spend tons of money on the iTMS of stealing? Who are you, NBC?
- titlesaysitall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5What about my old wire of fire, eh?
- Jeffler, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9My brother's $40 MP3 player supports Digital Radio. And I know what Digital Radio is so don't give me the "AAAH ITS NOT FM", cause I know it isn't.
- DelMonte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"they are actually on 5.5, not 5"
I'm pretty sure he knows that... The point is that they're still in the 5th generation, and that "0.5" update was relatively minor. - smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5i'd like wi-fi capabilities so i can listen to internet radio like last.fm, but i guess that won't be a common feature until city-wide wi-fi availability becomes more common. hopefully more cities will start adopting municipal wi-fi.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6What does the iPhone have to do with it. The 5G iPod has been out for way too long (especially by Apple's standards).
- whitehornmatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Too bad you couldn't sell a share to get a keyboard with a shift key.
- logicbus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It'd be nice to catch a game or talk radio from time to time. Especially since I've got my iPod with me pretty much everywhere I go.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Not sure why you're being dugg down. I guess Diggers don't watch MythBusters.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Threre are less HD radio stations than FM ones; it will be a selling point once Apple's marketing gets their hands on it and convince people they need it.
- Jeffler, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I just got one yesterday.
14 day exchange FTW - DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Shut up. Nobody is creaming in their pants over a radio.
- theprez, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I seriously doubt that will be the Wednesday announcement. Let's be more realistic. Rumors, have been floating round about new nanos. That's what we'll probably get. It's been less than 3 months since the iPhone and almost a year since a nano update...
- kelly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ya, and there wasn't a color screen at all before the Ipod eventually added them. Was there no reason to think that they would add that too?
- schallis, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Am I the only person that doesn't care much for built in radio (HD or not)? I just always have something in my own collection I'd rather listen to.
- fanclerks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5WTF are you talking about?? You can burn all the songs you download off iTMS to a CD without issue. And the argument about getting it off the iPod, iTunes does download the purchased songs off your iPod to your library if you want it to.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3what do stealing and self-esteem have to do with anything?
- ruley, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5good thing i have stock in apple.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think you have a bad link. http://how-to-spell-rediculous.com/ isn't working for me. ;)
- bradpurchase, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4How could it be updated if we don't have one now?
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3YOU GUYS SUCK AT BEING FUNNY.
- maexus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Honestly, I haven't listened to AM/FM radio in years
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You could read the F'n article, or you can go ballistic on a tirade... Seems you chose the tirade. If what you were talking about was actually the case, I could understand the anger... But I think what's being described is the ability to listen to satellite radio, hear a song you like, and buy it from the iTunes store by having the iPod utilize the metadata from the radio signal to inform the store which song you're looking to buy.
- mightycbu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2oh no, didn't radio die five years ago?
what's next: a brown iPod that can squirt? - kelly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I don't know what's so hard to understand. Think of it like a radio station. Yes you can hear the songs... but you can't listen to them 15 minutes from now after the station moved on to another song. This service would be like you having a tape cassette in your radio at all times allowing you to record songs as they're being played.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, that is SORT OF what he's talking about... He's talking about how he thinks we shouldn't have to pay to record the song/program we would be hearing, like in the 'old days' of making pause tapes and recording radio shows. I love that stuff myself, and have 50+ cassettes and minidiscs of old 80s/90s radio. I don't think Apple is ever going to have anything like that, and I certainly don't get that from this rumor. There is little implying that you will have a recording capability on this new iPod, and certainly nothing that made me think I would have to pay to use such a feature (if it had ever been implied). You can still hook up your radio to your tape deck/minidisc/computer with audio interface and record what you're hearing on the radio.
- neutrino15, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm with you. However, I think that even if the iPod just downloaded new episodes of podcasts on my list I would be happy. I travel constantly, and being able to download a podcast in an airport, (maybe even subscribe to new ones), then watch them on the plane... That would be insane..
Same goes for an on-the-road, or at office situation.. I can't plug in my iPod to a work machine, but if the iPod could download pod-casts directly?!
My guess, WiFi built in.. iTunes store (including pod-cast section) access via WiFi. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2iPods have a nice habit of being released shortly after the debut, usually same day
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Not having an FM radio hasn't been a problem for me with iPods. A lot of other people talk about how it's something missing with the Apple players. I'm not one of them. Having or not having FM (or digital if this rumor is true) won't mean anything to me as far as whether or not I buy a new one. Now, having Wi-Fi that will allow me to connect to the iTunes store for new podcasts while traveling or an occasional audio or video purchase would make me more likely to consider the new iPods. Bigger screen is needed too. 3.5-inch for the full size iPod and at least a 2.5-inch for the nano (if they are really serious about adding video to the mid-range player).
I like the size of the nano and if they make big changes to it (please God, not that fat nano abortion that has been going around the nets), make it worth it or I'll stick with the 1st gen nano I already have. I won't buy it just because it's new and from Apple. - jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm thinking it would resume later, kind of like what happens if you lose your Internet connection during an iTunes download.
- MedHead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C04E07A&nplm=MA070G/C
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It depends where in the world you live. Some countries can get it by DAB , some by FM, some by AM only.
- grrrrrrrrrrrrrr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I suspect the digital radio feature is related to seeding the consumer Pod market with receivers for a variety of wireless media, eventually including streaming video, delivered via the 700 MHz spectrum which will be itself innovative in its structure and distribution http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/01/technology/01spectrum.html?ex=1343620800&en=ea558b72f8b5767a&ei=5088&partner=rssny
Expect spirited bidding from Google and Apple for the rights to the spectrum. Who knows?...NBC may come to regret withdrawing from iTunes or perhaps they were already privy to the future and just didn't like the terms. As quid pro quo goes, Apple has hopefully managed expectations enough to deliver a touchscreen interface and avoid a resulting post-Xmas morning let-down. Things could ugly. One thing is fairly certain, I can't believe these guys are looking forward to September 5th.... http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/cbuilder?ticker1=HMV:LN -
