Nike + iPod reciever built in = bluetooth chip - lnfiniteLoop, on 09/11/2008, -6/+27Please ignore loser "inolikeai" who obviously lacks a life. There is no manipulation of any system. Have digg check their records and give it a rest man. Seriously. No one wants to hear it.
- samimnot, on 09/12/2008, -1/+18Be sure to factor in ;-)
R & D / Marketing / Distribution / Retail Operational Costs / etc... - ForebodenOdin, on 09/11/2008, -1/+17Now what's the estimated cost to produce it?
- ElBeh, on 09/12/2008, -1/+15"Appleinsider" is quite literal, I suppose.
- abadonn, on 09/12/2008, -0/+14Go forth internet hackers and bring me skype on the Touch!
- OpCzar, on 09/11/2008, -0/+14There's still some space left, they could've crammed more memory in them.
- bbqsalad, on 09/12/2008, -0/+13its never enough.
- bbqsalad, on 09/12/2008, -0/+11Glass doesn't scratch as easy as plastic. The previous iPods with plastic screens were VERY prone to scratches. Plus I think glass is easier to recycle. And yeah, probably easier to break :-/
- pipdip, on 09/12/2008, -2/+12There's no reason why Bluetooth couldn't be enabled with a firmware update. If Apple doesn't enable it, they've lost me as an iPod touch customer. Not having features in a device to reduce cost is one thing, however, to have the hardware in a device and simply not enabling it for no apparent reason is another.
- tomis, on 09/11/2008, -1/+10Yea, just like all other websites. Big fricken deal. People digg it because it interests them. Don't like it? Bury and move on.
- kevinsflowers, on 09/12/2008, -3/+9He made a valid point, why digg down??
- ChayD, on 09/12/2008, -5/+11WTF Apple using an *industry standard*??
- xptweakerntn, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6Hmmmmmm...you're exactly right. Wait! No you aren't. Lets think what bluetooth can do. Imagine this: You put the iPod in your backpack, put on your wireless headphones, and walk to class or jog without any wires dangling. The controls and volume are built into the headset. Or, you have your iPod in your backpack, go home, and then you decide to add a cd to your iPod. Instead of digging the iPod out of the backpack, simply open Amarok, whatever, or even iTunes, and it syncs wirelessly over bluetooth. That is mostly useful, wouldn't you say? So if the hardware is there, what is keeping them from it?

enjoy - santaliqueur, on 09/12/2008, -1/+7You mean like every other piece of hardware in Macs?
- chickenloco, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5Wow, that was fast... they were also the first to disassemble the iPhone 3G
- Dalhectar, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5Lay off the haterade
- acousticsean, on 09/12/2008, -1/+6battery is soldered to the logic board? I wish i was ahead of the curve here in nyc and invested in ipod repair shops, these places are goldmines because of this stuff.
- diggenerate, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Glass is easier to recycle than plastic as well and they are trying to make their products more eco friendly.
- santaliqueur, on 09/12/2008, -2/+7***** that, all that ***** is free!
- 80hd, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5The glass they use is PREMIUM.
The chrome on mine looks like brushed aluminum but the screen still looks as new as day 1. - mogebier, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Ah, I didn't know ipods once had plastic screens.
- Virgule, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5No he did not. ForebodenOdin asked for the estimated cost to _produce_ it. This has nothing to do with distribution and retail running costs.
- diggenerate, on 09/12/2008, -2/+6the new ones have 32gb of memory
- comptonstomp, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3orange turtles
- jlian, on 09/12/2008, -2/+5Costs too much.
- teh_techie, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3it's actually at the 1:00 mark...
- virtualball, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3As stated, it's easier to recycle. Also, it's easier to break a plastic screen. I know what you're thinking, "That makes no sense!" Well, imagine pushing your thumb into a normal phone's screen and the amount of force you'd need to crack it and then imagine the iPhone's. The glass is thicker and feels like your product is of higher quality.
- bbqsalad, on 09/11/2008, -3/+5my pants moved...
- skidooer, on 09/12/2008, -2/+4What are they going to enable, exactly? Wireless headsets are only bluetooth feature the iPhone supports; something that is mostly useless in the iPod context.
- bbqsalad, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2stfu
- SealandRes1, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2No, apple has planned to use glass + aluminum for its new products for a while now.
Here's why: Watch 0:45 (Aug, 2007) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHfGoPcN7uU&feature ... - IRejectReality, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1wow that was interesting! but then again I like seeing things in pieces. you can gain so much knowledge from knowing whats in the case of an electrical product!
- mogebier, on 09/12/2008, -3/+4Does anyone know why Apple uses glass instead of plastic?
Just wondering. It seems that glass is heavier and would break more. Do they do it to make people buy new players if they drop theirs? - ChayD, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Going once....
- pooljoe, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I think glass makes the touch sensing more practical too, if it were plasic and it being an lcd screen your get into broken pixel issues as well
- ChayD, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1...going twice....gone!
- Jorrin, on 09/14/2008, -1/+2Whoa there, I wasn't trying to offend you. You're still mistaken though.
If you want to get technical, you stated 'the first gen only had 8gb or 16gb of memory', gen; as in generation. Not iteration. The 32GB model is still technically the first generation.
Not to mention, why is 'the new ones have 32gb of memory' worth stating if there are already first generation models with that amount of memory? - samimnot, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1@ virgule and odin and santa...
Only a person with ZERO business experience would consider the manufacturing cost alone. The 2 of you might consider posting your future comments to articles about Britney Spears, etc... - diggenerate, on 09/12/2008, -2/+3I was talking about the iPod Touch, the first gen only had 8gb or 16gb of memory.
- CATSCEO2, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1This is a witch hunt I say!
- sbaysem, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1LOLZ! Precisely.
- SoCalMario, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1why?
- donna1234, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Both Apple's second-generation iPod touch and fourth-generation iPod nano are expected to be widely available at Apple Retail stores
