- trzynascie, on 09/27/2008, -3/+153I feel like I'm reading an advertisement.
- DagYo, on 09/27/2008, -2/+90That article sucked.
- MMaster23, on 09/27/2008, -2/+49Why is this on the frontpage?
The nano was launched weeks ago and been reviewed millions of times since. This "article" doesn't even do a proper review and just gives it a "A-".
"the September syndrome" .. really? Then you must also call everything introduced on CES the "January syndrome" .. Cebit = March etc etc.
Worst. Post. Ever. I'd fired the guy who wrote this. - morgrar, on 09/27/2008, -3/+31i'm sure they'll throw that accelerometer into every iPod by the end of next year.
- RadicalEdward, on 09/27/2008, -3/+27right click the ipod under devices in iTunes. Says sync. oh and EVERY PAGE of the ipod settings (music, photos, etc) have buttons on the bottom that say sync. guess what they do.
- Tinja, on 09/27/2008, -1/+22Isn't this article a little... late? I would have though most diggers would have read about the basic features of this generation Nano by now.
- Hamletlere, on 09/27/2008, -1/+20PC engineer? What the heck is that? An electrical engineer? A software engineer? Mechanical?
I'm a software engineer, and I've never had a problem with the synching process. I plug in my iPod, iTunes switches over to the "device" display, and as mentioned above every tab under that display has a "Sync" button at the bottom. It's really not that difficult (disclaimer: I'm running it on a Mac, perhaps it is harder under Windows?) - AstronomyDomine, on 09/27/2008, -2/+19I'll be happy with a Zune when the wankers release it in Australia. It's not like we're a third world country ffs.
- dullnation, on 09/27/2008, -0/+16I'm still kinda wondering why it hasn't been released in the UK too...
- essjay, on 09/27/2008, -2/+17You're right, there's no "sync now" button. There is, however, a "Sync" button on every single screen iPod screen. Now I know it must be difficult for a "PC engineer" (how do you engineer political correctness anyway?) to make the logical leap of faith that's required to understand that "Sync" and "Sync Now" mean the same thing but please don't assume the rest of us are that dim-witted.
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -2/+17I've seen 8yr olds and my mum sync iPods, why is it always the 'engineers' who have problems with iTunes?
- RedShoulder, on 09/27/2008, -4/+16...AND the Zunes have an FM tuner built in (which is very handy at the gym on the treadmill).
C'mon Apple! How many years have you had to add that simple feature?
I think the new Nanos are pretty cool and would buy one, but I don't want fewer features for my money... - dukeeeey, on 09/27/2008, -2/+14you are
- redbytex, on 09/27/2008, -0/+12It's alright... but the tilt feature, that makes it lauch into the album viewer? It's actually really annoying. Because I'll be at the gym jamming away, and a song will come on that I like, so I'll try to crank it up, only I can't because all it's doing is shuffling album covers. So I have to hold my arm in the air so the iPod is upright, then turn it up.
As far as I know, there is no way to turn this feature off. - WomensUnderwear, on 09/27/2008, -2/+12you need to adapt to how apple wants you to live
- Vulphaestion, on 09/27/2008, -0/+10Mainly because the 16GB is flash-based, therefore joggers/runners/exercising peeps don't have to worry with the HDD in the 120GB one.
- mancfrank, on 09/27/2008, -1/+11Fanboy review.
- mangangreg, on 09/27/2008, -39/+48Ahem, thanks for copying the Zune4/8's shape, a year late
BOO
Zune FTW! - kawaiirobo, on 09/27/2008, -18/+26I've always went with the bigger iPods, the ones now branded as "classic," but I must admit this is the first time I've really wanted a nano. My mother just got one for her birthday last week, and after playing with the accelerometer and the Genius function on the iPod it's self, I must say this nano really is a vast improvement over most similarly priced players, and the iPod line in general.
- pizpot, on 09/27/2008, -1/+9nano's are cool, but my 6 year old 1GB iriver records with line-in to mp3. Man is it handy.
- MtheoryX, on 09/27/2008, -0/+7Because they want longer battery life? Because they want something that can withstand physical activity (no hard drive)? Because they don't need to carry their whole iTunes library all the time? Because they like the colors? Because they like the small form factor? Because they like the reduced weight? I could go on if you'd like.
- unclefrank, on 09/27/2008, -5/+12I'll be happy when i can use a zune with windows server 2003 or OS X.
- sjps220, on 09/27/2008, -0/+6Horrible review. Once again, no mention of sound quality at all! Come on! This primary use of this product, even more so than something like the iphone or the touch, is as an AUDIO DEVICE. Lets try to have at least a mention of how it sounds rather than just discussing how pretty it is or how it does stuff when you tilt it or shake it. I for one (being a 3G nano owner) see little that warrants me upgrading.
- crazysamz, on 09/27/2008, -0/+6Not in the classic, moving around and jostling a Hard drive based PMP while playing games or whatever is never a good idea.
- FleetAdmiral, on 09/27/2008, -2/+8No discernible difference between windows & mac version of iTunes interface Hamletlere
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -1/+6No actually it isn't.
But that's really not the point. You hate anything mac related. Regardless of the truth.
You're profile shows where you stand.

Tool. - vanden9, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5IT will be great in the ipod shuffle...
- Selkies, on 09/27/2008, -1/+6I've got this Nano 4g now for 2 weeks, and it's really neat. VERY light and maybe too small for my hands, but this is great when you put it in your pocket, you won't feel it. Also, I doubted the usefulness of the accelerometer, but it's great. You can't find the next-button blind, so un-holding and shaking is way faster for me.
- xkingADROCKx, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5Yes you do that.
- Tyrghast, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4It absolutely failed to mention that it looks like the zune mini.
- Laughto, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4I like the sound of the new nano but I tried one in an Apple Store the other day and the thing feels horrible to hold. The edges of the nano poke into your palm, and you have to hold it awkwardly (you feel like you should be using it with two hands iPhone style, one to hold it and the other to use the clickwheel). On paper it's great but I highly recommend you try before you buy just in case you end up with the same qualms as me.
- shallot, on 09/27/2008, -1/+5Zunes are so much better than any apple crap. The author of this article must be a sucker for apple.
- filovirus, on 09/27/2008, -1/+5Size, it's all about the size.
- BossKey, on 09/27/2008, -1/+5There are only two reasons I listen to FM radio and they're both listener-supported commercial-free. One is the indie music station, the other is the public radio station. But you can get practically get all their programming as podcasts now.
For me the most useful radio in a music player would be an AM radio, because you can't get live sports on FM, and live sports can't be had on a music player unless it's an internet-enabled iPod touch or something. I always wondered why there's no AM radio in music players. Is it because the densely packed electronics add too much noise to get good AM reception? - jfoobar, on 09/27/2008, -1/+5What Kitchen said. I was shopping for the 16Gs and no one had one. I was about to give up in frustration when I got the notion to go see how much space I actually used up on my 30G video iPod. The total? 2.8G. I went right back into the closest store and bought an 8.
I wanted a smaller iPod for working out with and carrying around in my pocket. The 3g and 4g Nanos are much better for that than the now "classic" models. - cowsgonemadd3, on 09/27/2008, -2/+6The samsung yep media players had tilt sensing functions and line in recording years ago. Its nonsense to say apple did anything but get competitive.
It does have a nice OLED screen though... - Dealjobber, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4You could spend half the money for a 12GB mp3 player.
70 bucks for a 4GB Sandisk and 20 bucks for an 8GB microSD card. - TheKitchenSinkX, on 09/27/2008, -3/+7Some people don't need that much virtual space, and would rather have the physical space. Myself included.
- pixeldust, on 09/27/2008, -10/+14Which is the same shape as the first and second generation nanos with a larger screen.
- CaptEnder, on 09/27/2008, -1/+4Politically Correct Engineer, perhaps?
...
Edit: Should've read down another reply...or two...now I'm feeling retarded. - MtheoryX, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3This is the 4rth generation iPod Nano (4G).
- sodade, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3FTA: "Inside, the nano now is outfitted with an accelerometer, the same device that debuted in the first iPhone and allows the handheld players to sense when it is rotated or shaken. Turn the nano to the left and enjoy browsing through album covers or watching a movie. If you are left-handed, you will want to turn it to the right in order to keep the click wheel controls in your dominant hand. Shake the nano and it launches into shuffle mode. If you don’t like that first song, just shake it again for a reshuffle."
Sounds like a crappy "feature" for joggers or mountain bikers... - CCmachined, on 09/27/2008, -1/+4BREAKING: "Another new feature is the ability to record voice memos via a line-in microphone.". FINALLY.
in the meantime, ill keep using my sandisk mp3 which has had voice memos for years. - kawaiirobo, on 09/28/2008, -1/+4have you tried the new iPod, Im gonna go ahead and guess no, so you really don't know what your talking about. As for DRM marketing tool, I have an iPod that dosn't have a single song bought from iTunes, so exactly how is apple forcing you into DRM? Lemme go ahead and answer that, they're not, but simple people like you are so staunch anti apple that you won't even give it a chance.
- manova, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3I guess your gyms don't have a bank of TVs that you can listen to through an FM station.
I listen to FM radio on my commute to and from work to listen to the news on NPR. - wolfboyZ, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3How the ***** do you manage to RUN OVER an iPod? Twice.
- alittleroy101, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3The only two reasons that I listen to the radio are sports broadcasts and public radio. Nearly everything else is total *****.
- abrasion, on 09/27/2008, -1/+4What a ***** article.
I am a complete sap, I always buy the latest nano for several reasons.
1, fresh warranty for a year
2, more space
3, great re-sale value on the old ones.
This means I always have the latest ipod at very little cost to me (I sold my 2G 8GB nano for 15$ less than my 3G 8GB nano)
Now, on to the business.
The new nano sucks, I'm going to grudgingly put up with the thing but it has several issues.
The rounded screen DOES cause more glare
The battery life is inferior to previous model
The shape is less convienient in a pocket at gym etc.
The shape is so thin / narrow that it's actually difficult to have a good, solid grip on it and still use the thumbwheel, without bending my thumb at a painful angle.
(yes, really, it's so thin you can't hold it right, between the palm and fingers)
The benefits to the new nano are.
Fresh warranty
Less weight
More mbytes to work with.
Honestly, if I could return it without a re-stock fee and re-purchase the 3g model but in 16gb with a fresh warranty for 30$ more, I would, even with the extra weight. - anshuman, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3+12 / -11 lol...some ipod owners here i guess :P
- rootsm3, on 09/27/2008, -2/+5I just want to listen to my music. That's all. None of those features do anything I need.
