- dharasick, on 02/10/2009, -6/+114The second concept to be labeled 4G. What is 4G about it? The article says nothing about possible upcoming 4G service, and this would be the potential third generation iPhone (3G).
At least this one looks nice. - rkho, on 02/11/2009, -3/+63I'm ***** tired of this 3G 4G *****.
2.5G = EDGE. It's what the first-generation iPhones have.
3G = Third-generation of cellular technology for mobile networking. It's what the iPhone 3G has. Hence, the name iPhone 3G.
iPhone = The original iPhone. Released in June 2007, the iPhone is characteristically identified by its brushed aluminum back. It is offered in capacities of 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB.
iPhone 3G = The second-generation iPhone. Released in July 2008, the iPhone 3G is characteristically defined by its plastic back offered in colors of black and white, with capacities of 8GB and 16GB. Contrary to popular belief (read: ***** idiots), the iPhone 3G doesn't have "3G" in its name because it is the third-generation iPhone. Instead, the "3G" in the name denotes the upgraded cellular technology in the phone which allows for faster speeds when utilizing the 3G network. - crazzy88ss, on 02/11/2009, -3/+41Expandable memory? On Apple hardware? We ARE dreaming now.
- HookmasterCH47, on 02/10/2009, -7/+38A little too tapered at the bottom, but overall... Looks pretty good. We'll see what they have up their sleeve in Cupertino one of these days I guess.
- Archaic1, on 02/11/2009, -6/+32What's the appeal of a front-facing camera that everyone seems to be begging for? I haven't ever been in a situation where I've really wanted one, let alone needed one. Is it just my line of work or something?
- Malnilion, on 02/11/2009, -4/+29It looks...bulimic.
- natshea, on 02/11/2009, -1/+25I bet the tapering will feel awkward in landscape mode while typing. I don't think I'd like that. For me, texting is more important than a video conference.
- tangel0, on 02/10/2009, -5/+28I think there's a point where a phone gets so thin it becomes uncomfortable to use. I can imagine holding this thing would feel like grabbing a dull knife.
- LoganT, on 02/11/2009, -2/+21"Props to Verizon for having balls of steel and sticking with their demands"
Ohhhh, you mean the balls to stick to their own piece of ***** phone OS that they put on ever ***** Verizon phone? - acex23, on 02/11/2009, -4/+22I know this is the internet and everything, but seriously? What made you feel the need to call him an idiot instead of just answering his question? :/
- floort, on 02/10/2009, -15/+32Just bring it to Verizon please!
- fluidfoundation, on 02/11/2009, -7/+23Why not put the mic inside the home button face, and do dual speakers on the bottom?
OR use that space to put in a microSD slot. - pamon, on 02/11/2009, -4/+20make it unlocked, make several versions for GSM and CDMA, and make it affordable. Then it's huge.
- svensksvamp, on 02/11/2009, -3/+17no need for a change in appearance. add copy&paste instead.
- arizona01, on 02/11/2009, -0/+12Thanks for that. People are so stupid sometimes.
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -4/+16The iPhone was orginally offered to Verizon but they declined because they could not come to an agreement with Apple.
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2007-01-28-veriz ...
Props to Verizon for having balls of steel and sticking with their demands. But god damn, biggest mistake they have ever made. I think they were very short sighted. Sure, you wanted this and they wanted that, but in the end it doesn't even matter one bit because the iPhone would of brought you massive profit and would of increased your user base ten fold. Verizon, you don't sell cell phones, you sell cell phone service. That is what its all about and the iPhone would of brought you tons of it. - chkdg8, on 02/11/2009, -2/+13Quick, who wants my 3G!
(standing in line at the Apple store) - jcannonb, on 02/11/2009, -0/+11It's NOT 4G. Its 3rd Generation! The 3G stands for the network it connects to on the carrier's network, not a model or generation number.
- larsvilhelmsen, on 02/11/2009, -2/+12A fantasy wank-job.
Look: 8
Connection to future reality: 3
Fantasizing potential: 10
Relevance to anyone: 2
It is one thing that Apple can't fart without an article on the smell hitting Diggs frontpage, but fantasizing about the future smell of possible future flatulence, that might one day become an actual (and probably fine) product, is a bit much. - mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -1/+11Your BJII = Blow Job II ?
- MacParrot, on 02/11/2009, -1/+8Since he asked the question in a non-douchebag kind of way was it it too much to respond in kind? You could have just said "videoconferencing" and left it at that.
- Ragarnok, on 02/11/2009, -4/+11Most likely by 4G they mean 4th Generation (which doesn't make sense) 4G isn't fully even defined yet, much less implemented. Most likely people misunderstood 3G for '3rd Generation', which is not true, and by 4G they most likely mean 4th Generation.
- kylock13, on 02/11/2009, -0/+7I would be incredibly afraid of breaking this thing. Wow.
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+6There are a multitude of todo list apps, many of them free, on the App store.
As soon as you look at the phone you see missed calls, or do you mean you want it to ring some more later?
I have several apps that sync with desktop apps, most notably Things, which is also a great todo app.
Dock connector, meh, but I see how it could be useful to some people. - StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+6Yes, because the locked, GSM only, expensive iPhone is teetering on the edge of obscurity.
- Queue29, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5It only took me 45 minutes to write this comment!
- deealf, on 02/11/2009, -1/+6couldn't agree more.
I was about to make the same comment but just dug this one. what is it with people labeling all these concepts 4G? if anything, it's the 3G iPhone. Like dharasick said, there's nothing 4G about it - ripple123, on 02/11/2009, -7/+12***** wannabe design majors.
- cookingboy, on 02/11/2009, -1/+6Even Gizmodo doesn't understand that 3G in the case of iPhone 3G means 3rd Generation wireless network instead of 3rd generation iPhone? I am a bit surprised...
- woofers07, on 02/11/2009, -2/+7agreed, but sadly I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon. Maybe once Verizon fully switches over to the GSM based LTE network we could see an iPhone for Verizon, and that won't be for a couple years I believe.
- ClearVista, on 02/11/2009, -3/+7Where do you fit the battery?
- NONAME7943, on 02/11/2009, -2/+6Then there's no 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, etc.
- ionelementz112, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4People with lack of imagination are better than douches. Douches, and the people that raised them, should be executed to better society.
- GREEDOnvrFIRED, on 02/10/2009, -4/+8I see this concept is taking a lesson from the Kindle and placing space around the entire device to hold onto. Smart. I am sick of holding my iPhone like a wet Polaroid. Forget about handing it to someone to show them something.
- mousy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4and sadly it actually says 3G next to signal strength.
Although I'd still do dirty dirty things to have that phone... - Archaic1, on 02/11/2009, -1/+5Um, wow, intense. Yes, I know that it's for videoconferencing. My original point that ripple123 didn't read into is who actually wants/needs videoconferencing. Voice is enough to get across any information that I need to convey, and if I need to visually supplement anything then a phone camera isn't going to cut it anyway.
- spaceshipsix, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4Woa someone needs a blow job (II?)...
...I'm pretty sure he was joking. - deddoc, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4who would want/need text messaging? "Voice is enough to get across any information that I need to convey"
Just like video chat through a laptop/desktop, I'm sure you would use it were it available. I just find it ridiculous considering the battery life would be around 10 minutes with that active. - Nosferotu, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4Honestly, I'd be okay if the iPhone stayed exactly the size it is now and just got a hell of a lot powerful. If you're working on making smaller, faster processors, Apple, just put friggin' six of them in there.
I don't need it any smaller, I just want it to become a portable terminal to my home computer and take one step closer to seamless integration of my tech into every aspect of my life that could be made more efficient by it. - timusca, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4You've got 10 of them built in dumb ass.
- shmajent, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3So if video conferencing is made available, it will most certainly chew at battery life because of how resource intensive it would be. (Just how much video can you watch before the battery exhausts?) Then people will complain about *that*, and will start whining... again...
- srg13, on 02/11/2009, -3/+6Like somebody said in a comment there, Apple should not get rid of the full-face glass cover. It makes it really nice to use having a completely smooth surface (except for the button).
- mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3From the comments section FTA (driving while video-conferencing) :
" frigg :
I think you're allowed to drive and video chat if it's hands free.
So I'm guessing they'll be head devices that will clamp this thing in a position a few inches in front of your face so that your hands can stay on the wheel while your chat partner can witness your expression as you drive into a pole." - MacParrot, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3This wasn't designed by Apple and therefore they won't be releasing it ever
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -1/+4No, I meant the balls of steel they have for telling Apple "too bad so sad, we aren't going to be pushed around by some big brand name company. Here are our terms of agreement, take it or leave it."
But I know what you mean. I've been with Verizon for years. The only good thing about Verizon in my opinion is their great signal rate. You can get a signal practically anywhere and especially where other companies fail to reach. Everything else about them pretty much sucks. - inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3try 1998?
- Janv1er, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3I saw a big ad in Paris for an iPhone 2 3G with iChat.
I took a pic and sent it to engadget, with no result.
Undoubtedly fake, but still.. - m0tbaillie, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3This is incredibly inaccurate *****. You have absolutely no idea what the hell you're talking about. First off, it's called E-UTRA. Second, *MOST* of the world is still using some variant of GSM technology around 2.5 - 3G. Very few (read, about half a dozen) countries are actually deploying any sort of 3.5G - pre-4G technology and its basically geographically miniscule countries like South Korea, Japan, and certain regions of Scandanavia.
- Gravey9, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3why is this dugg down it's true.
- MacParrot, on 02/11/2009, -2/+5I love how you make the same trollish comments that others have made for years
