- birch25, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27like the $1299 imac?
- Chipsandsnacks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I don't believe the raw "clock speed" number is the only indicator of how fast a processor is. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
- wjadams, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Core Duo = dual cores. Think of it being two of your processors on the same chip (sort of). Higher clock speed doesn't always mean the best.
- bleaknik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Intel has changed their process roadmap quite a bit since they released the Pentium 4s.
In a stupidified way... the P4 had a long skinny pipeline that could be clocked very highly. AMD did some rocking with what was more closely related to the P3 design--instead of a long skinny pipe, a short and wide pipe. The problem with this is that it requires a slower clock speed to keep it stable.
To compensate for the slower clockspeed, chip manufacturers have started to employ other means to up the processing power... i.e. two processors or "cores" crammed onto one chip.
In theory... it goes more processing happens in fewer ticks. - fungifred, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Thanks for pointing out the obvious.
- Taikun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14It's not just raw clock speed that makes a chip fast. It's how data is most efficiently sequenced as it goes into the core, the size and speed of the cache, speed of the data BUS, etc.
Newer processors are able to perform so well because they do more work per clock cycle than older chips. Newer chips like the Core 2 Duo are able to sequence and group process threads more efficiently and intelligently to allow for more throughput, and as a result, more speed. - marksy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11i agree with tagliare. More drice's please... or device slots for HDDs and two optical drives please. I need at least 3 HHDs for bettering my friend "toolman", and two optical drives to burn and use at the same time... perhaps we would all "ooh" and "woah 1337!" over a glowing 'apple logo' case like the apple books? maybe cross-bread the last g4 case with the g5 case? with liquid cooling? imo
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Basically, the core duo is two processors in one, which would make it faster than a typical single processor running at the same clock speed.
- nTensify, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"I don't believe the raw "clock speed" number is the only indicator of how fast a processor is. (Correct me if I'm wrong)"
The only thing the clock speed tells you is how fast the processor is compared to processors of the same generation and process; a 90nm Intel Pentium 4 a 2Ghz is 2/3rds as fast as a 90nm Intel Pentium 4 at 3GHz.
So, as you can tell, clock speed is a very narrow indicator of chip power. - Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -21/+28what's wrong with the Power Mac G5's case?
- barlion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Core Duo chips are running at lower megahertz clock rates than P4's but deliver better performance due to the difference in chip design. Basically Intel has just proven that the megahertz myth is just that.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I really hope apple brings more surprises to the Pro line than just an Intel migration and a shiny new case. Especially now that they've gone Intel, they might be able to bring some interesting graphics options to the table. I really hope they have thought about bringing a less amateur sound option to the Pro line, as the sound components in current Intel Macs are well below the Apple image, and to include them in a next-gen pro device would be nothing short of embarrassing. Also, any word on when Apple will update some of their displays and other accessories for their desktop line? I could see August bringing a lot more surprises than just “OMG new desktops!!!”.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10http://www.misterbg.org/AppleProductCycle/ - where about are we on here ?
"As Macworld or the Worldwide Developer%u2019s Conference draws near, the chatter builds to a fever pitch. Rumor sites jockey for position, posting a new unverifiable, contradictory rumor every hour or so. eBay is flooded with six-month-old, slightly used gadgets as college students, underemployed web designers and independent musicians struggle to clear credit card space."
i think that's about the current state. :P - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I love the look of the G5 enclosure, but in some ways it was a big step back from the G4 case that preceded it. I owned a dual G4 867, and not only was the case much smaller than a G5, but it offered dual optical bays as well as mounting bays for 4 hard drives. The G5 case, which is much larger, gives you only a single optical drive bay, and to get 4+ hard drives inside, you have to buy an aftermarket bracket (overpriced). Of course my dual G4 was the most obnoxiously loud (or was it just the pitch?) computer I've ever owned, but I loved the enclosure.
I'd love to see the new Power Mac enclosure both smaller and more expandable, just like the old G4 cases.
And for heaven's sake Apple, don't skimp on the video card this time! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm picturing something black and glossy with a big glowing white apple. Ten diggs says it will look like a ninja.
But more importantly, does anyone know what they're going to be calling it? "Power mac" doesn't quite work anymore because it's intel. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just hope they don't take their design cues from the consumer desktops. I love the look of the Mini and the iMac, but all that shiny preciousness wouldn't say "power" to me if it were used on the pro line.
I can't imagine what could look more appropriate than the current G5 tower cases, but then again, I thought the G4 cases were great at the time, too.
The only thing I do hope is that they come up with a case that is still easy to get inside of, holds all the goodies, and can fit into a rack enclosure. - 2blathe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My little nit: Apple better have an intergrated looking keyboard to go along with the 'new' case's desgin. Come on Jonathon Ive, you can't just use the imac's... you're better than that!
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It will probably be called MacPro. The media has already been calling it this...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The point of a rumor though is that there's something to back it up. Somebody said it.
Usually. - combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A 1.8 GHz Core Solo is faster than a 2.6 GHz Pentium 4. It's a better architecture. The Core 2 Duo is looking like it's going to upset the Athlon FX as the fastest consumer CPU on the market, even though the clock speed is lower. It's not just a matter of clock speed, you also need to pay attention to (among tons of other things) work per cycle, cache size and latency, and FSB speed. There are other things to consider, but I think I hit the big ones.
- n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, you mean the iMac
But anyways I never liked the PowerMac case. Apple is more of a minimalist and yet the front of the case looked like some device in a cheesy Sci-Fi movie that was used for teleportation. I think black is a good idea and if they can work in the slot drives without making it look overdone it will help. - fusionFactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would you want to return your MacBook? They're only (speculated) to change the MacBook Pro and the Mac Pro's cases. You're safe.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"5. Bring back the "Pro" black keyboard keys and a case with an adjustable height (but made out of aluminum, for durability). I messed up the one that originally came with my G4, and the white Apple keyboards just look gross after awhile, especially when I've been working with messy media that likes to resist soap and water. While there are some 3rd-party Mac keyboards with black keys (I have one by Kensington), the Apple ones have extra function and volume/eject keys."
Keyboard? What are you talking about?
Bring on the photochopping everyone. - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like the current case, so I'd like to see what they unveil in about 1 month, so close :P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2re: tabledesk
not true, the light grey area... oops sorry, slipped
still, though, the intel iMacs are identical on the exterior to the iMac G5 w/iSights that were out for a few months. - KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also the iMacs use 7200rpm SATA drives. Hardly suited for "mobile' use...
- cloudless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Core 2 Duo has both mobile and desktop versions, I believe the new Mac Pro will use the desktop version. The largest SATA drives in iMac are 160GB, while desktop drives are 300GB or larger. iMac also uses mobile RAM. Don't forget mobile parts are usually more expensive. I said I wanted a cheaper Mac desktop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The current look is pretty good, but with the Intel boards the thing could literally be half the size. The prototypes were laughably empty with the Intel motherboard in there.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm, have you looked at any benchmarks for these "mobile parts" you are talking about? All indications point to Apple using a Core 2 Duo in the new Pro line, which is also a "mobile part". Fact is, these low power pieces of technology are destroying high end desktop components when tested(especially the Core 2), so I think Apple''s use of them in desktops is very logical indeed. It lets them further integrate their hardware configurations, while still offering a bleeding edge experience to users on all platforms.
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good news, small news, but good. It was pretty dissapointing when the MacBook pros used the G4 case, iMac wasn't a big deal because the G5 case was fine.
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not really much "news" to this. It is all pretty much obvious to anyone that has been through the Apple go-around once or twice. Let's see ... new Intel based machine -- so there's the "new" chip regardless of whether it's a current Yonah or whatever (which I doubt it would be but whatever), and of course a new case, it's not going to be a POWER mac anymore. It's doing to be a Mac Pro or whatever they call it. It only makes sense that it will be a new case design.
Next up for Think Secret: "News Flash! Apple to release new computes and software upgrades this year. News at 11".
I wish there was an auto rumor smashing routine we could add here, now THAT would be news. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2MacPro sounds just like macbook pro. It will undoubtably cause confusion. I hope they go with something a little more original.
- mentholmoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I could've pulled all of these rumors out of my ass. Seriously, anybody with half a brain could guess that this stuff is going to happen in the timeframe suggested.
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well barlion Apple been saying it since at least mid 2003. While Intel's marketeers and even AMD's a bit were pushing 2.11 Ghz vs 2.12 Ghz as the defacto standard in all processors, Apple was trying to dis spell this "Megahertz Myth". Closest I can get to the Macworld 2003 video on this:
http://homepage.mac.com/dikkmartin/.cv/dikkmartin/Sites/.Public/mhz_myth_320f.mov-zip.zip - lepton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My guess is it will look more like a high end stereo unit than anything else. And yes, I know we are taking about the pro desktop machines.
- tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The Intel iMacs sport a different design than the G5's. The case was redesigned to be far slimmer and far quieter.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Also, the Pentium D is two dies on one core. The Core duos and AMD X2's are two dies on one core.
- cloudless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would like to see a cheaper desktop system from Apple. The Mac Mini is cheap but uses mobile chip and parts, while the PowerMac is way more expensive than a PC with similar configuration. Something in between would make a better desktop PC replacement.
- cloudless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nope. The iMac uses mobile CPU (core duo), mobile harddisk, and other mobile components. That's why there is the PowerMac line for a true desktop.
- converger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The subtext of that story, being a new enclosure for the macbook pro line... is what I have been waiting for. I have had my 17" 1GHZ G4 since a week or two after it was introduced and I have been very happy with timing it as I did. It seems to me you need to make the transition when there's a sea change upgrade, not when theyre just transitioning something.. those are the people who get the angriest and I get why, believe me I do. I recommend anyone looking to upgrade their notebook to wait just a little longer for the new enclosure, which I would be willing to bet, will be a showcase. I want to see... a high def drive, likely to be blu-ray.. and EVDO built in. This is now on the PC side and my guess is that Jobs hasn't been sitting still. Now.. lets talk about the ultraportable, instant on notebook based on flash technology!
- tagliare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thanks for pointing out my spelling error, but tools like Raid aren't just for style points. These are professional machines, and guess what, professions use them, like myself. More internal storage would be a big plus, and Raid0 in very useful in handling multiple streams of uncompressed video.
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think they should bring back the pizza box cases:
http://johansz.free.fr/images/sun/ultra1-11sm.jpg
Or use wood triming like the first sear's ataris:
http://www.retrogames-retrocomputer.com/atari/varcade1.jpg - musicfreak21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How long will my Quad last? Intel looks like fun to get.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5For once I totally agree with Ireland. They didn't change the Macbook Pro case much from the Powerbook and they don't need to change the Powermac Case that much.
The Mac Pro should sport a stainless steel look similar to its predecessor - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1They really don't need to change much, the case as it is right now looks fantastic but they do need to make it smaller. It's a little disappointing that the power mac g5 is bigger than the power mac g4. It seems that it should have moved the other direction as far as size goes, but now that shouldn't be a problem with the Intel chips. I can't wait to see/ possibly buy one!
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3lol, i like: "... the Worldwide Developer%u2019s Conference..."
Wow that must be one long product cycle if we're shooting for the WWDC 2019
BTW: it should read Developer's, but it kinda got screwed up. - pedmond, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1A CHIP case? What's that?
- fusionFactor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"Thanks for pointing out my spelling error, but tools like Raid aren't just for style points. ...and Raid0 in very useful... Ha! Retard. - marksy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5i guess we'll all just have to wait 'n' see...
