New apple.com design coming?
desudesu.com — I just found this image from desudesu.com. "It's design test made for Fantasy Interactive for the next generation of apple.com site" says the caption. It looks quite great to me.

- cdharrison, on 10/12/2007, -10/+157Looks nice, but I'm going to have to call BS. A "design test" doesn't mean, "this is the new design for apple.com". They probably asked the guy to submit a concept for a site he'd love to redesign.
Sorry, no digg.- revmitcz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46I'm with you on this one. Looks to me like a rough mockup, and likely something Apple passed on. As tight as Apple's lips are about everything, I doubt they'd let a design firm show pre-release shots of their site ahead of time. Being a designer myself, I know first-hand that nondisclosure agreements when it comes to redesigns are standard, and no design firm would put pre-release shots up as an example of "current work".
That having been said.. what's all this about MacPro Black? Sounds yummy. - dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -35/+11fugly
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52Apple is more creative than that, and I highly doubt they'd make their website a theme that looks like a copy of the Vista Aero and XP Zune. This must be a concept by a design company, not the actual final design for Apple.
- anthonyyeung, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25no digg, yet i know for some reason, ignorant diggers will digg this anyways.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45Reminds me of WMP11.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37I don't think apple would go for a dark theme. it's too amateur and wouldn't really fit apple's image IMO.
- andr3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I think you're right... either that or this is a really clever way of doing massive usability testing!
"Want your website reviewed by a bunch of tech-savvy users? Submit it to digg, watch the comments and take notes! Yay!" - jchrome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Apple has had and used black/dark themes for ages on certain sections of their site. In fact the stark black/white thing is one of their trademark signature styles. This mockup needs some work, but it's not that bad.
http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/ - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5and http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipod.html
- DigDugDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think the redesign will mimic the redesign of the Apple logo found in 10.4 Tiger. It's surprising to me that they would change the logo in OSX and not have a site design or something else to match it. Seems oddly out of place to me.
- sion2119, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I agree, the design will eventually look much better.
know why? just look at FI's site http://www.fantasy-interactive.com/ - ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You'll also note that this is very rough mockup, since the top nav button for iPod is not in the proper case (reads Ipod).
- mennis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Suckage.
- tonicboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This could possibly be some designs created for Apple on spec, hoping to get some work from them. In that case, they would not have been made to sign an NDA. Either that, or it is simply a design study or "portfolio piece". Personally, I have done portfolio pieces of imaginary redesigns for real web sites as well.
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FI are the same idiots that made the new MTV site. They love Flash *way* too much. I guarantee that mockup is for a 100% flash-based site. Apple's smart enough to know that would be the stupidest thing they could do to their site.
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1speculative apple story ending in a question mark = auto marked as inaccurate. again.
- pinky24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5what's with the capital I on iTunes and iPod?
- jphofmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From the site:
"Designtest made for Fantasy Interactive, the assignment was to design the next generation apple.com site. Not to change the world or apple.com, just showing that I know how to handle gloss and layout for the webb. So stop hating." - Konstantino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I dugg it because that design was amazingly awesome, not because I think it's real.
- revmitcz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46I'm with you on this one. Looks to me like a rough mockup, and likely something Apple passed on. As tight as Apple's lips are about everything, I doubt they'd let a design firm show pre-release shots of their site ahead of time. - madoxx, on 10/12/2007, -44/+18niiiiiiice... i like..... how much??
- angers, on 10/12/2007, -45/+1people obviously don't get it madoxx..
- buzzert, on 10/12/2007, -5/+55I get it (Borat reference), it wasn't funny.
- pixelbeat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1I decided to submit this because of the rumor, not the fact. They (Apple), hired Fantasy Interactive (not just a guy).
- thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17It's nice, but a bit dark and gloomy.
- heyitsme23, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I agree, I was going to say its ok, but really not friendly, and especially not at all like apple OSX, so users wont feel familiar with the site like they do now.
- audiocollective, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2i think that this is not only what apple.com will look like but what Leopard will look like also!
Look at the nav menus in Time Machine http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/timemachine.html and that youtube video of the new elevator nav at the apple store in Ginza http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6EW9cGCM8Y
It Think this is going to be their new design. - ext237, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You guys are killing me! LOL
Read the guy's description of the image, he's applying for a job at Fantasy Interactive and this was the proof assignment they gave him. Lucky guy tho if he gets the job, FI looks like a great place to have your work showcased.
- Lazrius, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I personally think it's awesome. One can only speculate...
- macniatic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28I do not like the design.
Apple would go with a clean looking site that in 5 years will still look nice. This is a Web 2.0 design that will get obsolete very fast.- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Maybe, but that is very sleek, and their design needs to be redone.
- TheDiggMan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3@wphj
Looks really slick but not really user-friendly. Most user-friendly sites (like digg) have more light colors in it, and not black. But don't get me wrong, I think it looks great, just not for apple. - greymarketbrain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It's already obsolete.
- suddenfalter, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I believe their current site design is Web 2.0esque.
- bradkovach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Didn't Apple bring in most of what IS Web 2.0? What with shiny buttons, virtual reflections, and the overall OS Xish look? You can't out-web-2.0 Apple!
- afraydocurado, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26I don't know about you guys, but when I think of Apple I think white. I know they have the black iPods and Mac Books, but when thinking of color white comes first to mind when Apple is mentioned. Their ads have white backrounds, the stores are white, etc. So I don't see them going black, yes they could probably pull it off and make it look good but I it's unlikely.
As far as the design goes, it would look good after some tweaking. Right now that is just too much black, but I like the layout.- greatromance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Agreed. Although the black does have potential, Apple is just known for it's clean look, not it's dark look.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think white too when I think of Apple, but they do have a few pages that are taking on more of a black theme already, so I don't think that black is entirely out of the question. Here's a few pages that have a significant amount of black already:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/tiger/
http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/
http://www.apple.com/macosx/resources/
http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
Not as dark as this page is showing, but I wouldn't rule it out of the question just yet.
- rmw132, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Maybe Apple will allow design CSS switching between a white or black scheme. That would make sense considering Apple seems to promote white/black products. Apple is all into personalizing their products so it makes sense visitors could do the same for their website.
Personally I'll stick with the white layout, I generally find black layouts depressing although they are much easier on the eyes at night to read.- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah, you can only get the black version of the site to work if you pay them $40. They're all about personalization....when you pay them more money. Really I'd hardly say they're about personalization, their options are quite limited, especially when it comes to black.
- Zoomrix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1First off, I like the concept although that top bar looks completely out of place.
Secondly, I don't think it's true. Just a design test, not too meaningful. - OUChevelleSS, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2What's with the Latin and sparse Spanish in there?
- synergyo1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It is latin filler text used by the printing and typesetting industry.
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://www.lipsum.com
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1sexytime
- dixonr315, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Look how they spell iPod and iTunes. Fake.
- Kragnerac, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Mac Pro Black? Mac Pro Quadro Core?! Oh this had better be real.
- ColinCampbell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I don't know about this one. I've been a fan of FI for a long while now, and they're certainly capable of better than that for a high-scale company like Apple. Also, the idea that unreleased products would be used as filler for a new design is quite farfetched. If it was the desired design, they'd likely match more closely to the current content. The flipside of this is that it may just be concept work that no one was meant to see, meaning that these new products are really just from the imagination of the designer. That being said, it could very well be a proof-of-concept piece that is lacking in polish. My guess is that if there is a new Apple.com design, it won't look a whole lot like this.
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Nah... white text on black is something I can't see apple doing... pretty nice design except for that.
- neonpulse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8http://www.desudesu.com/
"Designtest made for Fantasy Interactive"
It's not for Apple.- m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4continued...
"Designtest made for Fantasy Interactive, the assignment was to design the next generation apple.com site."
Investigate this stuff before posting it...
burried as inaccurate - geminem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1full quote from desudesu.com-- "Designtest made for Fantasy Interactive, the assignment was to design the next generation apple.com site. Not to change the world or apple.com, ...."
- m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4continued...
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Black is the new white?
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9There is no way Apple would use sucha crappy font on their web site.
- fleetskeet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Aren't some sections of the site already black?
- colonels1020, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Oh snap! That's awesome! :-D
- rtphokie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3why should we care?
- joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1That looks alot like the windows media player interface.
- mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1too busy.
plus, Apple never publishes anything until it's ready (released).
Unless they goof. But this wouldn't even be a goof if it were real.
-=|Mgkwho - bikerGuyUT, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Apple also designs for widescreen monitors - this design is smaller than 800 pixels. So I don't buy it.
- mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually Apple doesn't.
Go check www.apple.com to see that their max width is about 800 pixels. Definitely not the whole screen.
People used to pull for abolishing the standard of 600x800 design when higher resolutions came out. Now that the resolutions are so high, you can fit two 600x800s confortably and therefore it's still a standard.
When resolution independence becomes more mainstream in Leopard and Vista to the level of GUI, changes might happen where design of websites become radically different (i.e. not based on resolution).
But again, Apple does not design for widescreens. Go to apple.com and see for yourself.
-=|Mgkwho - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thats funny my screen is only 320 x 240
do you mean your sites not mobile compatible ?
yeah those 2Billion people with phones are missing out on your site... - paulcooper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3oh yeah? and how many of the 2bil people use the net on their phone? or are even aware of the fact that its possible.
also, welcome to the world of CSS mate. try checking the 'media' property.
god its annoying when people get nick-picky about others comments isn't it?
- mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually Apple doesn't.
- macdee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5cool. take existing design, invert the colors, do a little bit of rearrangement and say it's a new design of one of the most innovative company in the world. lame. no digg.
- ectocooler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5this is retarded. should i start making my own test designs for websites and then digg them under the title "new ______.com design coming soon???"
what a waste. - bradym80, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1A change like this would require apple to change the backgrounds of all their images displayed on their massive site from white to black. There are images embedded in tons of images in their tutorials, developer site... It would be a massive redesign that just doesnt seem thought out.
- IsoTeemu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Amateur mistake; Fonts are way too tiny. Yes, it looks nice but try to read it from 2560x1600 resolution. Buried as inaccurate.
- pixelbeat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Guys, let me rephrase... I just submit this story because I think Apple it's working on a new website, just that... That's not mean this mock-up is the final version or something... I found it, I post it, not a big deal, right?
Do you remember back in 2004, when Joshua Davis (praystation.com) release some mockups for some project to (re)design of google.com, same controversy...
PS: BTW, I spend a lot of time here in digg.com, but (as you can see) I don't submit many things just because my english sucks. - ejsocom, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Anyone else see the BLACK Mac Pro? Ooooh...
- mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Look at how the iMac with the 24" screen is an image, yet the old ipod nano and shuffle are still there. They came out only [2?] weeks later.
-=|Mgkwho- avihappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Digg Me Down!
- ubergoober, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Hrm ... ok, looks like Apple would and DOES use a black theme. And it looks sharp.
So I wouldn't just call this BS just yet. http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/ - jydesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Way fake concept comp. No one at Apple would allow the search bar to be repeated twice (header/footer), use tiny aliased type, and apple has already put quicktime on the homepage - sans controls, the list goes on as noted above... I'm with ectocooler on this
- lunchbox170, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I dont know why you guys think apple would never use black. On there site right now there are pages that are black. Just look at the mac book pro page, that is black.
Although i don't think this is what Apple would make there site. I just doesn't seem like them. But Apple defiantly uses black - M15anthrope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3that's just terrible. to even think apple would consider using it is lame. there is no way.
- ryanschmidt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3terrible ugly. apple would never do this. sorry.
- ryanschmidt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2that apple in the center looks so gay too.
- selfdisplaced, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this looks like crap.
- ubergoober, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0My guesses,
1) Apple is looking to redesign
2) Call for submissions
3) Note that if you follow the link back, http://www.desudesu.com/ is a design firm
4) Also, this is even labled as a design test for another company/site/?? at http://www.fantasy-interactive.com/#start
5) desudesu has this design labeled "gntest made for Fantasy Interactive, the assignment was to design the next generation apple.com site."
So I wouldn't hold stock in this, but they do use black themes, and we have all heard of a redesign.. this may not even be for apple. who knows. **shrugs** - markus941, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If anyone hears, thinks, or mentions any rumor about a rumor that somehow has anything to do with Apple or Google, it skyrockets to the front page and people feverishly discuss it.
Am I the only one who's a bit alarmed about the Digg >> Lemmingg trend? - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I get the feeling that apple might start making all their products black, such as the iMac.
- ubergoober, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't you know.. Apple is way ahead and is doing Web 3.0
Black is the new-NEW white. - cyclone84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Simply won't happen. Apple is all about "clean" and easy to use. Somehow, the black background and white font doesn't fit with their style.
- TheTSArt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you're doing work for Apple, are you really going to make the "Ipod + Itunes" capitalization mistakes? If so, what a pathetic company.
- BingeBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple has had black pages on there site for years.
- ubergoober, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0For all you peeps sayin apple won't ever go black .. just click this already: http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/
- walkingmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's an ok mock-up, for some other company. but def not something Apple would ever implement. I think someone else put it well that is just a designer fantasy mack-up and not a project design. bottom line, Apple has always been about simplicity and clean industrial design. This is just not Apple. This is beyond the black or not black. This design would simply be a step backwards and Apple doesn't replace something with a lesser version.
- Sham3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As long as they don't play AC/DC Back in Black
- Jjcd7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1iTunes 7.0...ugh.
- MitchAubin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0It is just like wmp11. The tabs are absolutely identical. And the black theme is exactly the same as the default theme of wmp11. Lame desing and what a bad idea to associate a microsoft desing to apple, I see a lot of complaints comming if apple decides to take the very very very unlikely decision to use it.
- tenaciousdino, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0an apple.com redesign? so in other words, a different kind of sterile, soulless color scheme?
