- inactive, on 08/24/2008, -9/+86Shouldn't apple have included this feature without making people pay for it?
- kuz2r, on 08/24/2008, -1/+40cycorder is the way to go. I am not paying $20 for the other one.
- P373Y, on 08/24/2008, -3/+32apple wouldnt allow this on the app store
- hagfish70, on 08/25/2008, -0/+26Because you can't submit an app to apple that breaks the rules of their SDK, dummy.
- sirius2k3, on 08/24/2008, -4/+29not on App store? blah
- sputza, on 08/24/2008, -0/+18Its not an App Store product you tool. This has nothing to do with Apple.
Although, I think video recording should have been a standard feature that Apple should have put in the 2.0 firmware. - Kardde, on 08/25/2008, -3/+19Think something like this will ever show up on the app store? Or be included in an update? I don't want to jailbreak my phone.
- m3mn0n, on 08/25/2008, -1/+17Yeah. It SHOULD be built-in functionality.
I stopped reading this after "If you have a jailbroken iPhone running 2.0 software..." - DelMonte, on 08/25/2008, -0/+16"they don't even allow seemingly benign apps like this"
Not to overly defend Apple on this (I'm disappointed too by the lack of video recorder on the iPhone) but let's play devil's advocate for a moment:
If Apple was to allow direct access to the camera hardware, a "seemingly benign app" could take pictures without your permission and send them over the internet.
Currently, iPhone apps can get camera pictures only by calling the standard camera API, which will only return a picture if the user chooses to take one. The same mechanism couldn't be applied to a third party video recorder unless Apple includes their own standard video recorder API, and they haven't done that yet. - ramsinks.com, on 08/24/2008, -1/+15QIK works so well, I love it!
(free) - sfelton, on 08/25/2008, -1/+10They want to wait and release it on there own as a big bonus once they run out of new ideas. I imagine that they already have it.
- akifbayram, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9You have to pay 99 USD to join the Developers program, whether or not the App is free.
- colonels1020, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8But Cycorder doesn't support audio yet :(
- DeathJux, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8They're secret cyborg nazis and when the iPhone video-records them it reveals their true nature to the world.
If you read this, it means they know that you know, and they will be coming... - LeviTheSmith, on 08/25/2008, -2/+10Lol you state that you agree but you get dugg down. Yet he gets dugg up.
- hagfish70, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Yeah Qik, is great and it takes seconds to post to the web.
- ProjectGSX, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Yeah, I didnt pay $20 for the other one either. It works well, though.
- EvolvedAnt, on 08/25/2008, -2/+8The same reason the first iphone didn't come with 3G. So they'd have something to add to the next version of their phone for everyone to rebuy all over again. If they put EVERYTHING into the first phone, they'd have nothing to show off at their next Mac World conference to wow everyone with.
- stevene, on 08/25/2008, -2/+7That's the part that sucks. Why don't they? It seems like it's a win-win-win situation for everyone.
- RobotBuddha, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4It is a bit of a pain with updates. My response is to just hold off on updating unless there's a clear benefit, like with 2.0. But I can see why other people would consider it too much of a pain.
- ramsinks.com, on 08/25/2008, -1/+5why would you want to send somebody a 50mb email?
you mean a link?
QIK. - mb3581, on 08/25/2008, -1/+5Why? It does not damage anything and is completely reversible.
- mikek814, on 08/24/2008, -3/+7waiting till jailbroken 2.1
- EvolvedAnt, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4Yes you can put apps up for free without paying apple per download, but you pay a yearly developers subscription fee to have access to the official SDK and the ability to add apps to their store.
- Elliuotatar, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4Audio is nice, but damn the video quality of the other one is bad. How could they screw that up? I mean don't they just get high quality video off the camera? It's like they intentionally screwed it up as much as possible.
- jakatak, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4I am guessing that the next iPhone will be video compatible and that is why they won't let a video app on the store just yet. It's all in the marketing.
- Billistic, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4Yeah or go "The new Iphone 2.0, 20 gigs and records video"
- RobotBuddha, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4"Are the APIs *that* restricted that you can't even make a video recorder? "
Yes. - fuelcarddotorg, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3QIK ftw. It puts it right on their site, or on youtube as well if you want. It has audio and video, and is free. Flixwagon is another choice, but I think QIK has a better interface and just works better.
- vinibinini, on 08/24/2008, -2/+5I'd say if you want recording for just fun then get Cycorder
but you're really into cell phone vids (for whatever reason) then get Video Recorder - WiseWeasel, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3It actually surprised me, looking much better as I moved around than the default camera app. It's actually pretty sharp, un-blurry footage it takes, and Cycorder in particular made some pretty watchable output, even when you move around. It's not as smooth as a real video camera, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it could deal with motion and sharpness. The youtube vids are prolly close. Jailbreaking is getting pretty easy with QuickPwn and all, so it's not that painful if you want to give this a try.
- zeeky, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3It's like they intentionally screwed up the interface as much as possible... I could have ***** out a better interface.
I have high hopes for Cycorder, since Cydia is only a quarter as ugly as iPhone Video Recorder. - BrendanSheehan, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I used this app (on my jailbroken iPhone) to record Leonard Cohen in Dublin, Ireland when he was here.
I have since restored my iPhone, but he will live on in my memory.. pretty much forever :( - totorototoro, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I haven't jailbroken my iPhone (and won't), but I'm curious how well these video hacks work. When I move my iPhone around the room-the camera view gets really broken up/blurry/etc in the viewfinder mode. Is the actual video the programs captures pretty smooth? (tough to tell from those grainy youtube uploads-unless those are really accurate, in which case..bummer :p )
- Tydence, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3I want a tiny version of Final Cut.
- masterkenobi, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2And you're posting comments to a thread that's over a week old because........?
Obviously it's just you and me chatting now. I dugg you down because you are "Fox news"-ing quotes from the "review" that you probably took several days to find, and picking out various things from there to discredit everything that I said above.
Yes, those MAY OR MAY NOT be valid points but this is coming from some dude's blog. And besides, you carefully omitted his overall conclusion of the phone:
"The Samsung i900 is a fantastic feature phone, it has a lovely design and feels great in the hand. It has a quality build and a nice screen although the resolution of 400 x 240 is a bit strange. The camera is fantastic and connectivity options are all covered with super fast data at all levels. It is very responsive and can be used exclusively with touch or with a stylus or with both so the options are all there. If you like the iPhone but do not like the straight jacketed approach of Apple then this phone could be the one your looking for, plenty of storage for media and expandable too, shame about the lack of a haptic keyboard although this should be corrected with a Rom upgrade but there is no guarantee that this will happen."
This guy, if you have or haven't noticed (probably not considering your spelling mistakes as well), made a bunch of spelling and grammar errors here and there in his "review". I'm going to hold out and keep my eyes on a more legitimate review:
http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/samsung-omnia/ ... - Nouman6, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3But then what can they throw into the next gen iPhone? ;)
Sneaky yet obvious is Apple. - totorototoro, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2Cool, thanks for the info. Maybe I'll try it on my deactivated EDGE iPhone!
- SPECOPS, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I second that, QIK kick-ass -and they finally fixed the "mute" really is muting now (older versions, mute said it was muted, but really wasn't)
- orph3us, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I paid, maybe stupid, but it has sound, covers future updates, and after the admittedly insanely long encoding time, it offers better compression and thus better file sizes than cycorder. Then again if cycorder developer can add audio, even with the larger files, it would probably be better than video recorder because of the aforementioned long encoding times...
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -2/+3yes.
- mrBitch, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1RE: " And you're posting comments to a thread that's over a week old because... ?"
... And you're doing the same because ..... ?
RE : " you carefully omitted his overall conclusion of the phone "
Carefully omitted? Should I just cut and paste the whole damn thing here? And how is it a glowing thing to say that the phone is a " fantastic feature phone " (meaning it has lots of features but sucks to use those features).
Again, the review summary has quite a few really BIG negatives against the Samsung:
" .. the signal strength was a bit erratic at times compared with even the iPhone on the same network. The iPhone seemed to hold the signal much better in a GPRS or Edge area "
" .. Omnia has 8 Gig’s of storage available " ( wow )
" .. has a quality build and a nice screen although the resolution of 400 x 240 is a bit strange. "
" .. Negatives :
- No haptic feedback on the keyboard
- Signal strength suspect at times
- Strange screen resolution
- Loose stylus and no where to store it
- Proprietary connectors
- No spare battery "
I currently HAVE and USE a Samsung phone, and I LOVE IT. But this whole "cherry picking" argument is exactly what is going on with the detractors for the iPhone.
YES the iPhone has LESS features, but if you actually use one you will understand why another 45 million are being manufactured to be able to cope with the Christmas season rush.
In my office at work almost ALL the coding guys have bought iPhones. I am one of the last ones waiting for better deals with my carrier before I buy one (Telstra Australia's iPhone deals are so stupidly expensive they are idiotic). - WiseWeasel, on 08/25/2008, -1/+2I have NES installed on my jailbroken iPhone with a bunch of ROMs... works pretty well. There's no SNES emulator out for it yet though. That doesn't really matter, because the native iPhone games are a million times better than either of those systems, and there's a crap ton of them already.
- hagfish70, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Well you have 2 choices. Wait about 7 days for the jailbreak update, then upgrade FW. OR, upgrade then go 7 days not using the program until new jailbreak.
I mean if you think jailbreaking is just going to one day disappear, well then you my friend are disillusioned. - ramsinks.com, on 08/25/2008, -1/+2Samsung is still around?
- masterkenobi, on 08/25/2008, -1/+2Keep going? Ok...
The iPhone uses HSPDA at 3.2 mbps- or 3G speed (Omnia uses 7.2 mbps speed - or a 3.5G phone)
The iPhone has no video (the Omnia has video plus video editing on the phone itself)
The iPhone has no TV video out port (The Omnia has video out for Powerpoint presentations or anything else)
The iPhone has fixed 2Megapixel picture camera. (The Omnia has 5 Mega pixels with Macro, dynamic range, zoom, face recognition, etc).
The iPhone plays mov and adobe flash video (The Omnia plays divx, xvid, wmv, MP4, H 263/4, mpeg, mpg)
The iPhone has has no text reader (The Omnia has Word for windows with cut and paste, etc)
The Omnia has Powerpoint, Excel, Word for Windows.
The iPhone has a hybrid GPS with no street by street audio help - not realtime. (The Omnia has a true GPS with street by street audio telling you where to take a left or right, etc in realtime.)
The iPhone has no true recording capability, except for some poor 3rd party applications (The Omnia has true voice recording and playback)
The iPhone has no voice recognition calling (The Omnia has true voice-call contact name, for example)
The iPhone has no expansion port (The Omnia has a microSD slot that supports up to 16gb).
The iPhone’s battery is not replaceable (The Omnia has a replaceable battery that you can remove and replace with a new one or a newly recharged one).
The iPhone has a full HTML browser (So does the Omnia- the page displays entire web page initially and then you can with a flick of the finger, expand the page in realtime to any size you like and move it to the right location with the touch of the finger-similar to the iPhone).
The Omnia comes with two cameras. One in the front and the 5MP in the back. The extra front camera is used, so the other person on the other line can see you (if they also have the Omnia-great for deaf people). The future use of front camera is obvious- face to face talking or seeing a realtime event live.
The Omnia has a FM radio with recording capability at 128kbps- near CD-quality.
The iPhone when plugged in gives you iTunes browser to work with, and you’re at its mercy of what you can or can’t do, the iPhone (esp in th Windows XP and Vista) cannot be used as an external removable storage of files that you want to drag or drop. (The Omnia when plugged in the USB, becomes a removable storage device (just like a memory stick), where you can drag and drop to and from the device and computer, things like application CABs, MP3s, videos, zip files or self-extracting encrypted files, or pictures (jpg, bmp, tiff, etc) etc.
The iPhone has a slick touch screen OS (the Omnia uses the TouchWiz OS which mimics pretty much the same principle as the OS X on the iPhone).
The iPhone has some cool games which can use the accelerometer (So does the Omnia-it also has a accelerometer, lots of established software exists for the Windows Mobile world, e.g. software emulators that can play all Super Nintendo games, can emulate DOS games without a glitch- Doom engine games and Quake, etc- work fine on a high speed 624mhz Marvell CPU- including software to overclock the CPU to 800mhz and higher.
So my response is that you're going through hell, but you just don't know it yet. - blackinthmiddle, on 08/25/2008, -1/+2It's not a matter of being into cell phone video. Everybody knows the quality is absolutely, positively crappy. However, there are those rare moments when you just *have* to take some sort of video of what you're seeing and the only video option you have is on your phone...well, unless you own an iPhone that is.
- mrBitch, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1+1 for secret cyborg nazis.
- tomis, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1or, maybe you just get an update?
- dAbReAkA, on 08/25/2008, -3/+3most of today's phones featuring a camera can shoot videos without the need for a $20 application or a free alternative full of ads..
as with apple, you're always paying for the premium
