- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -10/+37Now all we need is a totally new Core Animation dependent Finder, new UI, new batch of icons, new future-proof filesystem (fully bootable ZFS OS X), iChat with VoiP, new versions of iLife and iWork bundled into the OS, and other exciting surprises. Gonna be one hellofa release IMO. Sure, they are some lofty goals, but we all know Apple's well capable of delivering at least most of them.
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30Dashboard has proven out to be an underwhelming feature for me. It is really powerful and flexible, but for the life of me, I can't find ways to make it useful.
It's a vicious cycle too. I rarely use it because typing into Safari's Google searchbox is easier. So when I finally do want to use some of the widgets, they take forever to load because they have been swapped out to my scratch disk hours ago. - raystanz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20The spinning cube has been used in OSX since fast user switching in Panther, nearly 4 years ago.
- allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17dashboard kickstart auto-loads your dashboard when you start up OS X so you don't have to wait for it to load when you want to use it.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19557
but still, i agree apple needs to address the memory-hog resource issues of dashboard. - robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Interestingly, "Leopard" appears NOWHERE in the article but somehow made it into the title here. Marked inaccurate...just like the other one a few stories down.
- sparkalex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13RE: Beryl comments
Remember that OS X has been using the cube effect for a long time now. (Keynote, iPhoto slideshows, etc) - crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -17/+26Innovation? I'm not going to claim that this is stealing from Beryl/Compiz, but it's hardly the most imaginative idea.
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Dictionary: I use the widget at least 10 times a day
Weather: Check it every time i step out
Calculator: WAY better than doing run > calc.exe
SMS: cheaper than sending text messages on my phone..
etc.. - unclejesse0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12This story made the front page from Macnn just over an hour ago. Dupe.
- iRoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Agreed. I've used top to check my processes and certain widgets take up like... a whole lot of jiggawatts. I need all the jiggawatts I need for Digg goddamnit!
- raystanz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11All of you Linux trolls do know that OSX has had the rotating cube effect since oh........
PANTHER. How long ago was that? Where was Beryl then? Beryl ripped it off from OSX. The spinning cube has been the transition for fast user switching for nearly 4 years now. - sabrebutt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You can use the widget plugin in beryl with screenlets and achieve the same effect. You can arrange all of your widgets on different sides of the cube.
I call prior art on this one, sorry guys. - sabrebutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In this case, however it would be for switching your dashboards in real time. For your desktop, of course, you'll have Places, which is also very similar to almost every window manager in linux with multiple desktops.
- maccam94, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I wonder if these patents will in any way restrict Beryl/Compiz development. Currently the 3D cube desktop is one of their main features. One of the minimize animations has already been removed because of Apple patents, is the 3D cube giong too?
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I am talking about after they are loaded. I rarely restart my computer. Go a day or two without pushing the dashboard button, and then push it and see how long it takes for the weather to load. It's almost a minute on my computer.
- gavintlgold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6At least linux people didn't do a Microsoft. If Microsoft had made something with a cube effect, it would have had LESS features than Mac OS X. At least beryl/compiz have expanded (greatly) on the idea of a rotating cube... I'm talking about realtime, video-is-functional, really high-framerate action.
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -16/+21What a fantastic idea. Now that's what I call innovation. Imagine, one Dashboard for your website-related widgets (Google Analytics, etc.), one for your writing-related widgets (Dictionary, Translation, etc.), and so on. Kind of like Spaces for widgets.
- CptZap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@skidooer
You can only do that in Cocoa Apps though... - neoform, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5those are the patents dummy. there are no screenshots available.. :|
- gavintlgold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You must have never used it before. You CAN do that, but you can also just have a normal-looking desktop until you change workspaces, then there's a cube effect, windows open by zooming, but only when they're opening (like opening the finder from desktop icons in Mac OS X).... It's really not distracting unless you want it to be.
- Blu3screen, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9If you're a fan-boy then of course not. If you can think with out Steve Jobs help, then yes It would appear to be.
- jrsims, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm actually impressed with the business implications of Dashboard and think it's highly underrated as a benefit to large organizations. Those of us who work in the MIS field know that quick, intuitive access to real-time information about the status of enterprise operations should be able to find some very powerful and creative ways to use it. There are implications for the line employee all the way to the executive level.
Those of you that work in call centers... how cool would it be for you to see your performance statistics in real-time? Could make an otherwise boring and tedious job into more of a game. And if you're an executive or senior manager, you will be able to get a grip on your situational awareness lickety-split (just hit F12 to see a trend of your company's performance for the day, the week, the month). SO many possibilities.
Yes, this is an Apple feature that has HUGE implications for enterprises with Apple computers. Usually, Windows is seen as the business-practical OS. And even though Vista finally brings dashboard functionality to Windows, Microsoft has Apple to thank for that idea. - DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Yikes. Compiz was first released in Jan 2006 and Apple files this in February? Interesting timing. I would think Compiz has prior art and is protected, isn't it?
- sabrebutt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Actually the 3d cube was available in linux prior to panther even. It's called 3d-desktop. Was first available in 2001.
http://desk3d.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php - NJHewitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ Drewblood - Compiz wasn't Linux's first 3D desktop - http://desk3d.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php this dates from 2002.
- ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dashboard doesn't load unless you load it. If you don't like it, remove it from the dock, and don't press the Dashboard button. I don't know what's causing you speed issues on a Intel iMac, but it's not dashboard.
- streak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! APPLE, STOP THE ROTATING, FLIPPING CUBES!
Or is this being developed for Club Gitmo? - chrisxkelley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@iroy
a whole lot = 1.21
... to be exact - kazamx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Most of the things dashboard does I have found I can do in firefox
Calculator = just type it into the google search box
Weather = I have a plug in
Dictionary = Added an extra search into the search box to dictionary.com (also an addon to auto check everything I type into firefox)
As I spend most of my time in FF dashboard hasn't proved as handy as I hoped. But then again it is nice to have it there for the few times FF isn't open - kris33, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Heh.. Someone is probably going to claim that Apple copied MS' gadgets(with widgets) when Leopard comes out because they though MS was doing it first. Just like some seem to think that Beryl created the spinning cube. :P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow. All sorts of cool animations we can use to... have multiple "screens" for dashboard. Big deal. How is this not going to be confusing. Dashboard confuses most users as it is.
And it hogs RAM. I don't use it. 6MB for a calculator? 9MB for a unit converter? Enough said. - gavintlgold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's probably not going to be called compiz, but yeah, they are merging.
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1schoate: It's not really worth digging you down for, but that wouldn't stop Apple from updating Leopard's finder. People with old Macs don't have to use Leopard...
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why the ***** do I get dugg down for posting the truth?
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know.. I often remove widgets are a short while, if it seems I doesn't use them, because a lot of them uses a lot of ressources. But fortunally this has resultet in a few widgets that I actually use:
- TV Widget. Because opening dashboard takes less time than locating the tv remote.
- iStat Nano. It really is easier than trying to remember where to find my current local ip.. and alot of other stuff. - streak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Leopard rumors include a Dashboard that integrates all widgets into a single process, to reduce memory requirements and improve speed. (If true, this will be an improvement for which existing customers will ask "why do I need to pay to get that?")
- Jabjabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While this is a cool feature if they finally do use it, I have to agree in that I haven't used Widgets as much as I though I would mostly because they are resource hogs and are in a completely different screen space to what I'm using, I suppose thats the one minor thing that Vista got kinda right in term of Gadgets. That said I do use the Alarm clock widget to wake up every morning, that's been the one that has actually gotten the most use since it's actually functional for my life that said any alarm clock based app can easily replace it.
- oracle1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4hmm...i was surpised to see that there's a big ad for vista on the appleinsider page.
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks like Fedora with Gnome + Widgets instead of applications. :P Plus we only get left-right rolling of the screen.
- stalky14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agree. One of the first things I did when I got my new MacBook was use Onyx to disable Dashboard in favor of Confab...er...Yahoo Widgets. If there's a way with Dashboard to tag some widgets as being always visible, let me know. It also does seem to be more of a memory hog, at least with the widgets I tried.
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yawn.
- scoffey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreee
- rampancy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why is he being dugg down? If you RTFA for both submissions you see that they both refer to the same patent.
- ultrahombre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh BOY!!!!!!! B&W Diagrams just like in geometry class.
- ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's a patent application. Wireframe illustrations are pretty standard, since all that is required is that you illustrate what's being patented, and you don't need a high-res screenshot for that. They actually want to be slightly vague on the application, so a high-res screenshot could hurt them ever-so-slightly in limiting the scope.
- mscman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Since when did you do a run command in Mac OS X?"
Better yet, since when did you run a .exe?! - aussieNickuss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Calculator: WAY better than doing run > calc.exe"
Since when did you do a run command in Mac OS X? - Meheren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is very cool I was wondering what they were going to do about that clutter problem.. they have had that problem for awhile now but it looks like leopard might just change all that! I only own Panther (Tiger is to much of a bloated hog aka. slow) but I have used many a trial thingy... and realized that dashboards can get VERY cluttered.
- intrepi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a multi OS user using Xandros Pro 4 as my main OS, XP as a use it if I have to OS, Ubuntu Live CD when all goes to hell with my system and I need to get on line in a hurry without installing or fixing my pc, OS. I believe Mac users are going to be in for one hell of a big surprise with Leopard's OSx as there is going to be a lot more to it than widgets and my gut feeling is it's graphical uses are going to be wide and many. I've never owned a Mac so this is no Mac fan talking, just a guy with a gut feeling Apple is going to put a large variety of of apples with it's Leopard OSx. This OSx will have some real WOW and not just fluff around the edges as I think it's going to put Mac's graphics on a whole new and different level from anything, anyone has seen which is why I'm going to wait on buying a new laptop as it could well be a new Mac with the Leopard OSx. Don't be surprised because I'm telling it how I envision it will be.
- hekel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0multiple 'virtual desktops' are nothing new... they go back to 1989 with the solbourne window manager, and have been incorporated into many desktop environments since.. including MSwindows via applications like nView .. you'd be surprised how handy they are, the 'cube effects' seen in Beryl/Compiz or Yod'm 3D for Windows, help the user to better visualize the multiple desktops, for better productivity and lessen confusion, as well as add the eye candy that whether or not you'd like to admit you know you'd enjoy ....
