- i4mt3hwin, on 10/12/2008, -0/+35By a metric *****-ton. Intel integrated graphics are terrible.
- guerraum, on 10/11/2008, -1/+35The only thing I don't really like about my Macbook is its damned Intel 950 GPU. What Apple is really missing is a 13 inch notebook with nice graphics performance, so, maybe not anymore!!
Dammit! I don't like to be the fanboy, but if this is true, I'll just have to upgrade! - artfuldodga, on 10/11/2008, -3/+35all of which we hope aren't massively defective :S
- buckyballs, on 10/12/2008, -1/+21Jeez, Steve Jobs really can get companies to do stuff other's can't.
They've had first dibs on the smaller form Core 2 Duo for the MacBook Air, They've released an octo-core mac pro with an unannounced processor, and they've held NVIDIA back from announcing their chipsets.
He really is one persuasive businessman...
I wouldn't mess with him! - digitalpencil, on 10/12/2008, -2/+16^ as opposed to all the other notebooks in which graphics upgrades are so accessible?
- electrolemon, on 10/12/2008, -4/+18The next person to bring up "lol macs cant play gams" gets a ***** pipe wrench to the head. Get out of the dark corner of your room, and stop playing games. That's not the only ***** thing that you can do on a computer. By the way, most PC games are released for consoles as well, so your point is ***** moot.
- Broomie, on 10/12/2008, -5/+16This is brilliant. I was having an argument with a guy at work today who hates Macs and when talking about CS4 he said, 'Do Macs feature the NVIDIA 9000 series of chipsets? No they don't.' which I replied, 'No, but I bet the new Macbook Pro will.' which he genuinely thought was unlikely. Ha, in your face!
- kelly, on 10/12/2008, -1/+11Geez. What do you want.??!!
They're already less expensive than an equally spec'd PC when comparing hardware, bundled software and operating system.
The only way the PC is less is if you equip it with less or equip it differently. - orph3us, on 10/12/2008, -1/+11or just boot into windows.
- noboot, on 10/12/2008, -0/+8I'm surprised after nVidia had issues..
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 - arjie, on 10/12/2008, -1/+9Don't reflex digg him down. For context, look at the horribly defective batch of 8400 and 8600 graphics processors. nVidia admitted that they're prone to overheating.
- Tcasey0478, on 10/12/2008, -0/+8If it doesn't work the way I want it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfO9JUNXN7U&feature ...
- n8o8, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7The current rumor is that MBPs are going to use Nvivia 9600 dedicated graphics chip. I'm guessing they will have 512 and 1GB GDDR3 options.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7A better graphics card also helps render GUI animation and effects faster. See: Core Animation
Not to mention Photoshop CS4, which now renders filters and effects with the GPU. - arjie, on 10/12/2008, -1/+7Absolutely, the fact that I could get a GeForce 8400M GS for cheaper than the Macbook's GMA 950 was what made me not buy Apple. I would definitely have gotten the Macbook otherwise. This is just bloody annoying, I bought my laptop around 4 months ago.
- thurows, on 10/12/2008, -1/+7New Apples to feature oranges. Give it a rest, the official announcement is two days away.
- max1018, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6They are. It makes the current MacBooks unable to play many games.
- whahaa, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5ok here's how it works. pay attention.
when apple comes out with new notebooks, those new notebooks will cost about equal or even slightly cheaper than competitors with comparable specs. this lasts about a month, after which competitors upgrade their specs and drop their prices. since apple only updates their notebooks twice per year, the further you get away from the update the more overpriced the notebook is.
moral of the story, only buy apple notebooks within a month following an update. if it's been 4 or 5 months since apple has refreshed their notebooks and you buy one, you are overpaying. but that's not apple's fault, it's your own fault for not doing a minuscule amount of research.
you'll see on tuesday when the new specs come out and mac-fan bloggers start babbling about how they're the right price for the parts. then you'll see again a couple months later when mac-hater blogs start ranting about how those very same notebooks have magically become overpriced. this has been going on for many years and it's ridiculous to see people still confused about it. - Radan, on 10/12/2008, -2/+7That is one argument I have never understood. I mean, personally I have never seen a PC laptop where you can switch out the components by yourself (except RAM or maybe the harddrive) without opening up the entire computer and thereby voiding your warranty.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6*sigh* Macs are also the standard for the media industry. If you do design, film, or print, you're most-likely doing it on a Mac.
- hiro, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5A *****-ton is an Imperial measure, I think you mean *****-tonne
- hiro, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6I wish you could edit your words on it to remove the apostrophe from videos
- Harbinger67, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6Actually he'll probably reply with "Yeah, but you have to buy an entirely new computer while I only have to upgrade one component in my system."
- Miraa, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4All I want from a 13" Macbook is mpeg4/H.264 decoding in hardware.
- kingofkolt, on 10/12/2008, -4/+8So, does this improve the graphics performance of the lower-end MacBooks?
- kelly, on 10/12/2008, -2/+6Now watch, rather than owning up to being wrong... he'll return to the PC jerk's default response...
"ya? Well, you're too damn smug about it!!!" - Venemous, on 10/12/2008, -2/+6GeForce chipset/Graphic Card + Core 2 Duo/Quad + $800/£500 price point = Me, the Microsoft fan boy, getting an Apple Laptop, with Bootcamp of course
- HolyChimp, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4These cards will probably play most new games on low-med settings. WoW plays on my GM950 on medium, so odds are you could max it out on these new MacBooks.
- arjie, on 10/12/2008, -1/+5Okay, I understand that you people don't like claims without evidence. But it's completely impossible to link to a completed purchase and its specifications. What I'm saying is just fact.
Macbook: http://i35.tinypic.com/350mq10.png
Dell XPS M1330: http://i38.tinypic.com/333ef6p.png
There, those are identical configurations. Things may change, but right now this is the way they are. I assume I was buried because people thought that I was lying. Well, I'm not. And you can price it out yourself. You know, if I were an OS X fan, I would pay an extra few dollars to get OS X. It's not such a big deal that Macbooks cost more. However, some people are not looking for that. We're looking for raw hardware and price, the OS doesn't matter because we're going to be using another one anyway (Ubuntu in my case, maybe BSD in somebody else's).
The fact is that to get an out-of-the-box working Macbook of the same configuration as any other laptop you have to pay more. Just as you have to pay more for a Vista-based laptop than you have to for one based on FreeDOS. Don't we all want to know the actual facts? It's in our goddamn favour to know those and to spread the truth, isn't it? I don't get it.
My computer is eminently usable. I am very happy with it. It is a Dell XPS M1330. I chose it because it was, at the time, a better choice hardware-wise for the same amount of money. Other people may have different priorities (maybe someone can't work without OS X, in which case the XPS M1330 is a good buy at no price). All I'm asking for is a little rationality. What whahaa says below is completely true, I've seen that a Macbook was definitely worth it over the HP Compaq NX 7300 I was using at the time. - Dracusis, on 10/13/2008, -2/+5For a 13" notebook that statement is right on the money.
- dddavid, on 10/13/2008, -0/+3in case you didn't know, not everyone uses their computers to play games.
- HolyChimp, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3No there aren't. About 99% don't. People don't need 9000 series nVidia cards to play indie games and I don't know of any that had a Mac version first.
OS X isn't a gaming OS. Blizzard still codes for both, and EA are using cider to port versions over (with lower performance), but if you want to game on a Mac then Boot Camp really is the only answer, unless you enjoy playing full retail for games that were out on PC last year. - Radan, on 10/12/2008, -5/+8You know there's more things than games that uses the graphics card. For example, Photoshop or like half the GUI of Mac OS X.
- ctonks, on 10/13/2008, -0/+3@arjie
you aren't comparing a macbook there. you've got the price of a macbook pro. which are a lot more expensive.
of course when i bought my latest laptop, i went for the mbp mainly for the graphics card, maybe next time i'll just go with the macbook. - Taiyoryu, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3http://optimitza.cat/news/2008/09/03/laptop-graphi ...
You can see that the Intel 950 and X3100 are the bottom two. You can see how much better the 9300M and the 9600M are versus the Intels and the 8600M GT DDR3 (MBP). You can guess where the 9400M and 9500M are going to sit. Which flavor will make it into the final mix (G, GS, GT, GTS, GTX), we'll have to wait and see. Will there be multiple SKUs in the family or just one GPU across the different SKUs? In either case, the lower-end MacBook will see a greater improvement in graphics performance than its MacBook Pro sibling which will make due with a modest improvement. - kinerry, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2the chicken or the egg?
- Shadoblak, on 10/12/2008, -2/+4I've been trying to weigh how much I'd hate myself if I actually bought a mac.....
- gamepr0, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2too litlle research i guess.
- mrBitch, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1Here is the not-so-scary part :
( extract taken from your provided page link )
" NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected.
However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected.
If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within two years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty. " - arjie, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1@ctonks: Gah, wrong screenshot, sorry. Here you go for the Macbook: http://i33.tinypic.com/28ul1kw.png
There, now it's more expensive and also has a few lower points: Intel GMA, 5400 RPM drive. Sorry about the mixup, it was accidental. The point still stands though. - mrBitch, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1Wow, this sure does scare me... Did you even read the page you just linked to ?

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 - mrBitch, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1True, and good point. However, Apple's service & support is second to none, and Apple simply swaps your hard drive into a new MacBook and gives it back to you (no questions asked).
Even the recent issues with nVidia and last year's MacBook Pro laptops have Apple EXTENDING the warranty to allow you to replace your faulty hardware at no cost to you. - InorganicMatter, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Not gonna happen. NVIDIA is the second-worst chipset maker out there, and if there is one thing Apple's doesn't slouch on, it's choosing the best of the best hardware to make sure they keep up their image.
Nothing that most Mac uses do requires anything more than an Intel GMA. All the graphics designers buy Mac Pros. Everyone else surfs the internet as happy as can be on their little tiny battery-efficient IGP.
I'll believe it when it I see it. - Scaryclouds, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Edit nevermind
- svensksvamp, on 10/12/2008, -9/+10Don't you guys see what you're doing? Last keynote sucked because of the fact that we already knew everything. The stock went down because there were no surprises. Stop spoiling things!
- kingofkolt, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Cool story, Hansel.
- brkhobowriter, on 10/14/2008, -1/+1Not when you consider the LG P300, which has an Nvidia 8600M chipset on it. And it is a 13" notebook.
- Ellipsys, on 10/12/2008, -6/+6Is the 9300/9400 something new, somehow? I've seen quite a few laptops (Asus N10 for instance) that already have it, so lets not spin this as OMG APPLE DID IT FIRST, STEVE JOBS IS GOD crap.
