Buried as MORE GAWKER MEDIA SPAM.- phibach, on 02/26/2008, -2/+8It's listed under the store, not the Mac section.
- phibach, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7edit: Now its under the Mac section [:
- TomScrace, on 02/26/2008, -1/+13Looks pretty official to me. The annoying thing is how many duplicates there are on Digg about this story.
- yokozuka, on 02/26/2008, -8/+38The article and the Digg wasn't speculative at all. Please don't be a jerk and accuse us falsely of *****. We got the official Apple press release note BEFORE the Apple Store came back up and the MacBook pages were updated. It happens often. Sometimes, it's the contrary.
We posted the very second the note hit our mails, with FULL CORRECT info. A few seconds after the article was posted, both Apple pages and the Apple Store pages changed.
- phibach, on 02/26/2008, -2/+8It's listed under the store, not the Mac section.
- phibach, on 02/26/2008, -5/+368Apple Remote is no longer included.
- kingfoot, on 02/26/2008, -2/+49$19 if you add it as an option too...
- ddfall, on 02/26/2008, -0/+67I've got the last generation MBP and mine did come with it which was nice. This reminds me of the iPod's of a few years ago. Remember when they came with a dock, sometimes A/V cables, etc.? That'll be the day. I'd be surprised if the next iPhone comes with a dock still...
- Radan, on 02/26/2008, -4/+10My third generation 15 Gb iPod came with a dock, a charger, an USB cable, a Firewire cable, a protective case and a remote. My last generation Nano didn't even include a charger (other than the USB cable). Though, I can't really say that this is that much of a bad thing. Sure it was kind of neat to get all that stuff, but I seriously doubt that most people even touched the remote or the dock. I can understand why Apple choose to lower the price and only include the things that are actually needed, and then let the people who wants the extra accessories buy them separably later.
Also, I never understood why they included the remote in the first place. Yes, it's nice, but you really only need one. I got a whole drawer filled with those pesky remotes, as a result of Apple tossing them around like they were made of sweets.- meez, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Sweet, a whole drawer. I guess you wouldn't mind sending one this way then?
- Speed, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5A wall charger would be nice though. I don't want to have iTunes popping up every ***** time I want to charge my iPod. Or have iTunes try to wipe my sisters iPod whenever she uses my laptop to charge it.
- drouk1556, on 02/26/2008, -0/+14Next time your iPod is plugged in, under the Summary tab uncheck "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected."
Problem solved.- Speed, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Don't know how I missed that, but thanks.
Either way, it would be nice not having to be around my computer to charge it (and, yes, I am too cheap to buy a wall charger) - Verdanic, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1My iPod still bitches that iTunes isn't paying attention and sits there in its dock telling me I better not dare to disconnect it, under which circumstances nothing will happen as the ***** iPod wasn't ***** doing anything in the first place. Ugh, Apple's ***** either works or it doesn't sometimes.
- Speed, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Don't know how I missed that, but thanks.
- drouk1556, on 02/26/2008, -0/+14Next time your iPod is plugged in, under the Summary tab uncheck "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected."

- Urkel, on 02/26/2008, -20/+2Maybe it's a sign of them moving to a more functional remote? I wouldn't mind paying extra for a remote that had more buttons or even a mini keyboard.
- node3, on 02/26/2008, -0/+11The small number of buttons actually *is* a significantly positive aspect of its functionality. While I do think it could benefit from an additional "Option" key that brings up an OSD with a small set of options pertinent to the current function, adding a mini keyboard or anything more than an *extremely* minimal number of extra buttons (no more than four) would make the remote significantly less useful to the vast majority of users.
What would be good for the more-button-loving geeks among us would be to utilize the iPhone and iPod touch as advanced, customizable, input devices. - Urkel, on 02/26/2008, -6/+0Let me get this straight. I'm getting dugg down for saying that Apple's hardware should be updated as it's own software advances?
Apple uses a standard remote between all products so considering the heavy influence of the iTunes stores into FrontRow and AppleTV then why would anyone be AGAINST the idea of a remote that better navigates Apples new features? You can now search through iTunes, type in Podcast names and log in to Flickr or YouTube so is the option of a keyboard or improved navigation really that offensive?- Joshuarr, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9You are getting dugg down because more ≠ better.
- Drax0n, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4No you got dugg down because you couldn't grasp the BEST most advanced feature of the Appel remote was the fact it had so few buttons.
Look at the windows media remotes and their unwieldly 50+ buttons... those remotes were designed to scare end users running for the hills.- Verdanic, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1I like those remotes. I can do whatever I like with my PC from across the room, and since my PC is my television, that's nice. I don't have anything against the Apple remote, though, but I think it's a little bit ***** that they're scrapping them as standard in models now. They cost no more than a dollar, maybe two to manufacture (although, I should admit, I rarely use mine as I do my multimedia on my desktop rather than my Macbook Pro).
- jasarien, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1After Jobs himself expressed his dislike for devices covered in buttons? Look at the iPhone. The reason it has so few buttons is that Jobs hates buttons. Oh, and it has some kind of awesome touch interface or something, I don't know much about that ;)
Either way, I can't see Apple going hypocrite, and turning their six button remote into a hand held keyboard...
- inajeep, on 02/26/2008, -8/+41Mine is still in the wrapper not used so I may see a reason behind that one.
- PhillyMJS, on 02/26/2008, -4/+14Agreed, I questioned the change as well until I realized that I've only used mine maybe three or four times since I got this first-gen MacBook, and then only to briefly demo Front Row to other people. I've never actually *used* it. Leaving the remote out makes sense.
- m00nmaster, on 02/26/2008, -1/+17Just because you don't use it doesn't mean it useless. I love the remote, but it's not worth 19 bucks.
- Eallan, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Good thing it's like 7 on amazon.
- signal15, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5The remote is useful for when you hook the laptop to a tv in a hotel room to watch movies. I use mine frequently.
- EvanWindsor, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Ditto. I use mine for when hook my laptop to the TV to stream movies (from Stage 6... RIP), and it's nice to have when you misplace the remote to your speakers for running music through iTunes/Front Row
- ferggo, on 02/26/2008, -11/+6Probably because they've been giving them out with every device for a while now, and you only need 1, so it doesn't make sense to keep including them in the price.
- FoxOrian, on 02/26/2008, -2/+5I have about four of them, all get used almost never. It's actually sort of obscene how much they handed them out like candy.
- theblacknight, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Dude, how many computers do you buy every year?
- FoxOrian, on 02/26/2008, -2/+5I have about four of them, all get used almost never. It's actually sort of obscene how much they handed them out like candy.
- Lewiji, on 02/26/2008, -0/+10I use mine for iAlertU, one of the most useful apps I've ever downloaded, especially useful if you use your laptop in places like libraries or you leave it in your room to go grab something or whatever.
- Zippo, on 02/26/2008, -2/+16I use my Apple Remote with my Macbook Pro all the time... comes in handy for music and Front Row.
- albrad84, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4Anybody know if you can use a logitech harmony remote to control front row?
- ddfall, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4It is possible although I've not done it. The harmony can learn remotes from pressing their buttons and assigning a configuration.
- TomFrost, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2A bit of time on Google brings up a few mac programs that allow you to use various remotes as an apple remote and more :) I don't have an apple remote (still have a Powerbook.. eep), but my Wiimote does the job wonderfully.
- hottcarl, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0You sure can. When you're setting it up in the harmony software, choose "iPod" as the device. Works great for me.
- rodrigo74, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1Next time, check one of the Apple Buyer's Guide available on the net, all of them had "no buy - update expected soon" on the MBP section.
- protodon, on 02/26/2008, -1/+3I lost my remote. I'm not looking for it either.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/26/2008, -7/+1what do you need a remote control for on a 15" mbp? mine is still in the wrapper. kinda useless for a pro machine if you ask me. I have a tv...i don't need to watch movies on a little 15" screen from across the room. It should have been an option..i'd a rather saved 50 bux. .i guess it might come in handy if i ever have to do some sort of presentation.
- Vash265, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6Wow, you answered your own question in your original post. Impressive. Also:
If you hook your TV up to your computer to watch movies or shows off of it as though the TV were a second monitor
Using your computer as a Juke Box hooked up to a stereo or standalone
Switching through various songs on iTunes with out having to actually give the iTunes window priority.- cadmiumpaint, on 02/26/2008, -5/+1all those features are useless to me. I don't use my computer as an "entertainment center" ....for me its a working machine. I only have like 3 music files on my entire system..iv'e never actually used my iTunes to listen to music. Just transfer songs to the pod. if i want to listen to music i have a stereo and an ipod. i guess Apple has this whole front row thing (that i've never used and have no desire to) and they're trying to make this whole digital hub thing a reality, but they should keep those features in the consumer machines and let the "pro" series be that way. that was my point and you're little attitude makes you a douche.
- Kadratis, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1His point comes across with more sense than yours does. Burried. :D
- andshewas, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2You spelled buried wrong. HA HA!
- Vash265, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6Wow, you answered your own question in your original post. Impressive. Also:
- Azakaa, on 02/26/2008, -1/+10That's a shame. I always have my MBP hooked up to a 24" monitor and when I am done working I kick back, load front row and watch some movies, all controlled with the remote of course so there IS a use for it. Then you have things like presentations when your laptop is hooked up to a projector. So to all you who say there is no need for a remote: Try thinking outside the box, you're mac users after all ;)
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/26/2008, -7/+2i have a much bigger tv and HT that i can watch movies on. I don't like the idea of listening to music and watching movies and tv on a computer. Its just a half assed way of being entertained in my opinion. and yeah i guess it might come in handy for presentations. I've never needed it yet.
- BossKey, on 02/26/2008, -2/+9Well, that's all very nice for you, but for people in dorm rooms, small apartments at that age when people frequently move, or other places where a full home theater is not a realistic option, a laptop and a 24-30" LCD is a decent movie-viewing platform.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/26/2008, -4/+2oh yeah i forget this is digg where people bury you for having an opinion that differs from the gang mentality. I forget that everyone's lives on digg revolves around the computer as center of life. i wasn't bragging...i was just expressing my opinion that i don't really think a laptop computer is the center of entertainment...at least not for me.
- Qumahlin, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1May I ask how you do it? Do you leave your macbook open at all times or do you have it closed? I ask because every single person I know who keeps their macbook hooked up to a external monitor has destroyed their macbook's screen due to the hot air that is vented directly onto it. The only way to avoid this is to keep the macbook open, with the screen off...which I don't like the looks of with my current setup.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/26/2008, -7/+2i have a much bigger tv and HT that i can watch movies on. I don't like the idea of listening to music and watching movies and tv on a computer. - jamwil87, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2It's good for parties, you can change the song from across the room.
I'm not happy I lost mine.- diggimator, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Sounds like there's an eBay opportunity here - tons of people who don't use it or need it, others who are unhappy about losing it.
- brianez21, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Just by the way - You can still use Front Row by pressing Apple+Esc and using the arrow keys / enter.
- tightscrummy, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2I used mine exactly once.
- lolmacs, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I've never used mine once. I think its still in the MBP box.
Nevertheless its a dumb move by Apple to not include them anymore.- diggimator, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1They cut costs on the major products, and charge more on the extras (Apple FireWire cable, Apple power adapter, etc., and now the Apple Remote). Kind of like how popcorn at a movie theater is always overpriced.
- spargett, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1If you have the new Apple Aluminum keyboard, you'll need the remote for boot options (aka 'option' boot). For some lame ***** reason, the computer doesn't recognize the keyboard at that critical moment.
This also mean no PRAM reset capabilities, etc. - Blah_Blah_Blah, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1new MacBook Pro more powerful?! NO WAY!!
- diggimator, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Laptops tend to have a smaller screen than desktops, which makes it unsuitable for watching at a remote-using distance. I used it once with my MacBook but that's when I was watching VLC hooked up to a TV screen. And I still could use my wireless mouse instead. I guess not including it is more environmentally friendly(?)
- agentsarah6, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1Just goes to show you Apple isn't logical these days.
- rwert, on 02/26/2008, -23/+16Crap, I just bought a new MacBook Pro. Wert FTL...
- cawpin, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5So did I. I bought a refurb 2.4. I'm really gonna have to keep an eye on it. If one thing goes wrong it's to the Apple store I go for a replacement.
- Thud, on 02/26/2008, -1/+16Look on the bright side... at least you'll get an Apple Remote. :)
- physco827, on 02/26/2008, -10/+6big deal. all they did was beef up the processor a wee bit. Added a little more memory to the gpu, put a multi-touch trackpad on there, make standard hdd a little bigger, and put leopard on it. Not really that much of an upgrade.
- node3, on 02/26/2008, -3/+45Oh, is that all...
- physco827, on 02/26/2008, -5/+3touche
- drouk1556, on 02/26/2008, -1/+5Piss-poor use of touché. License revoked.
- physco827, on 02/26/2008, -5/+3touche
- fichek, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2FYI Leopard ships with every Mac since it's release.
- atticus8, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I'm waiting for the new rev. with the neutronium case, an iSight that can see dead people, and sentience.
But I'm sure that RIGHT AFTER I buy it Apple will come out with the newer adamantium case just to spite me. Way to screw your customers again, Apple!
- node3, on 02/26/2008, -3/+45Oh, is that all...
- PPCG4, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9If you're within the 14-day return period... return it. Eat the 15% restocking fee if you have to. Apple won't replace your computer if something goes wrong, they will fix it, usually up to 3 major repairs, until you get a new one.
Now... how to short out the logic board on my latest rev 17" PowerBook.... :)- SHv2, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1hehe, 3 major repairs my ass. i got a dud that went through 6 before they even though about giving me a new one. i got traded up though which rocked. now my new one is rockin steady
- webcrumb, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Microwave. 30 seconds max.
Simple, really.- bradleyland, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Yeah, because all of the arcing going on inside won't leave any trace...
- Jedimonkey27, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3By 3 major repair what do you mean, three repair sessions, or three hardware defects? I have gotten it repaired twice and had to have the battery replaced and now my bottom case is bent AGAIN only now it sometimes won't let disks out without prying it open. I am considering asking for a replacement because this is getting ridiculous. I have never had a computer have so many problems in the first 8 months that I owned it., or ever for that matter.
- Light11, on 02/26/2008, -5/+1it just works.
- modusop, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Keep the power plugged in and change the RAM - works like a charm.
- nunofgs, on 02/26/2008, -3/+4I'm pretty sure I once heard that Apple will replace your laptop with a new one if you bought it 30 days before the refresh. You should ask at an Apple Store.
- aliceinreality, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1not true, and i worked at a store. 14 days to return it after purchase, with a 10% restock fee if open.
- fichek, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1right
- Menace1, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Yeah I just bought a MBP about two months ago, of course as soon as I buy it of course as apple does, puts out a new model, it's a computer so it's to be expected. However, after seeing the upgrades I'm not disappointed. I opted for the 2.6 processor, it still has the 8600 GT, and I didn't have to shuck out $19 for the remote. Just a few new features but nothing that makes me wish I would have waited longer. I've needed a computer for school, and this is my first Mac, and I love it.
- robbob, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Same here, but mine was a gift so I'm sewing my mouth shut.
*just nods and keeps smilin'* - cthellis, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1That's why you buy immediately AFTER a product line upgrade. You're assured the maximum amount of "not being outdated" time. ;-)
- robbob, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Same here, but mine was a gift so I'm sewing my mouth shut.
- TedwardRoberts, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1I also got burned. What's worse, this is my first mac. Looks like I'm going to be making some calls and raising hell :P
- Joshuarr, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Have you seen the macrumors buying guide? (http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/) I've been waiting for this update for about two months now. Stop playing the victim.
- CokeBear, on 02/26/2008, -0/+13You clowns. It has been all over the rumor mill for months now, that an update to the MacBook Pro was coming. Even if you're not obsessively checking the rumor sites daily, before you purchase an Apple product you would be dumb to not at least glance at this page:
http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
to see where in the product cycle you are. The information is out there, so I have no sympathy for pathetic people who don't check, and then whine about it after the fact.- davidm89, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I love a company that puts the burden of responsibility on its customers.
I love Apple products and keep up with the stupid rumor mill. And I've never been burned on a purchase. But lots of people do get burned, and it's ***** at the prices he/she pays.- Kerrigore, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1The only reason it's even an issue is that Apple has slower update cycles than most other manufacturers. If you bought a Dell or something, you probably wouldn't even be able to get the same configuration for the same price a week later.
- davidm89, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I love a company that puts the burden of responsibility on its customers.
- Psyfrox, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Make digg your start page and you wont have that problem in the future. Simple
- jabberwolf, on 02/26/2008, -8/+2Late to game as Sony and others have already been selling the penryn.
Multi touch is a non issue unless you have a tablet... which only PC's have.
Um oh and function, Sony and Dell have it beat.. badly. Hell some laptops like the higher end MB PRO, have availability for SLI. OSX and Apple still behind the game in hardware and developer support on all fronts.
When will the Mactard hordes learn? Really... look outside your world, there is a reality!- kobura, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4We don't all play video games, and we're not all intensely into 3d work either for SLI usage. As for Sony and Dell having the Mac beat on function... how so? My MBP is pure design work, ever tried sloshing your way through InDesign on a Windows machine? It's not fun. I don't see my office Dell machine coming close to productivity like my Mac does. I'm no Mac zealot... but I know what works for me. As for the "Mactard hordes", those hordes are off making a lot of money on their machines... I guess being productive, creative, and able to work means they're tards these days. Brilliant. Your dated Mac vs PC trolling should've stayed back in the 90's.
- solistus, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2You're an idiot.
Who cares if they're not the first manufacturer to sell the line of CPUs? It's not like the 2.4GHz chips they used before were horribly obsolete.
Multi touch is a non-issue unless you have a tablet? How do you figure? It's handy for anyone. I wish my previous gen MBP had it.
How do Sony and Dell have it beat badly? The LAST thing I want in my laptop is SLI draining power and pumping out heat. The GPU runs the hottest and drains the most juice out of laptop chips. Having more of them is a bad idea. If I want maximum performance, I'll get a tower. If I'm gnna pay $2000 for a laptop, like most people, I want it for serious work, not just Crysis. Portability and battery life are two of the most important features to most laptop customers.
- Jondi10, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I got mine about a month ago. I was going to wait because I was hearing so many rumors but there was never an update month after month.
- happybot, on 02/26/2008, -20/+2'Full specs and prices after the jump.'
No. - zachriggle, on 02/26/2008, -14/+2Give me my 2.8Ghz MBP! I know you can do it Apple, you put them in the iMacs!
- TheWorm, on 02/26/2008, -0/+15Yes, The iMac being a desktop.
- Eminemdrdre00, on 02/26/2008, -8/+3Yes the iMac being a desktop but using all laptop hardware...
- cthellis, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4What, suddenly there are fewer power and heat constraints in a MacBook than an iMac?
- Eminemdrdre00, on 02/26/2008, -8/+3Yes the iMac being a desktop but using all laptop hardware...
- AdmiralKarelia, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2The iMac has much more lenient heat requirements.
- fichek, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2No thx, i dont want my laptop to melt
- TheWorm, on 02/26/2008, -0/+15Yes, The iMac being a desktop.
- thinman1189, on 02/26/2008, -38/+9Wow, multitouch trackpad. It's so amazing, I don't know how I could resist the temptation of spending thousands of dollars on it.
- luchid, on 02/26/2008, -3/+12Uhhh the price is almost the same as the previous MBPs.
- AdmiralKarelia, on 02/26/2008, -1/+18If by "almost", you mean "exactly".
- luchid, on 02/26/2008, -3/+12Uhhh the price is almost the same as the previous MBPs.
- xmats, on 02/26/2008, -17/+37Bought it!
- kansai22, on 02/26/2008, -42/+4Look at this configure it and tell me the MBP is still appealing.
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet ...
If so you are a fanboy- abrooks, on 02/26/2008, -5/+14Damn, that thing is ugly!
- kansai22, on 02/26/2008, -20/+3It looks a lot better than the MBP trust me its piano finish black. best looking lap top out it doesn't look like a toy like some laptops with an apple on them.
- texpundit, on 02/26/2008, -1/+12Maybe...but it's still a VAIO, which equals autofail.
- kansai22, on 02/26/2008, -20/+3It looks a lot better than the MBP trust me its piano finish black. best looking lap top out it doesn't look like a toy like some laptops with an apple on them.
- wiiittttt, on 02/26/2008, -9/+27Not only is it ugly, it doesn't have the iLife '08 software that makes an Apple computer appealing to many people and lacks the multi-touch trackpad. On top of that, it runs Vista, isn't that enough reason not to buy it?
- headphonz, on 02/26/2008, -15/+3Must be nice to blow $2k on a MBP for something as trivial as iLife.
- jabberwolf, on 02/26/2008, -9/+3iLife? For iLosers?!
Thank god for small favors ! Some of us actually work with our computers and when we want, THEN we can play real games. Real Functionality. Real media center ( Apple TV sucks ballz!)
More available software, more creativity, simply overall BETTER on all accounts. - KillPenguin, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1So, if a computer can run Vista, it sucks? Go try vista for a while, maybe you'll change your mind. Vista isn't great, but any complaints about it were also said about XP when it first came out. Seriously, how can you be so close-minded?
- ethon, on 02/26/2008, -11/+21Thats a ***** laptop and a ***** configuration.
- kansai22, on 02/26/2008, -18/+2So a 2.6 gig with 640GB dual HDD, TV tuner ,Vista ultimate and a much more professional classy look @ $3,300 is not better than a Lap top with half the features? The Sony even looks like a $3000 lap top which I cant say for the Apple look at them both in person the apple looks like a toy in comparison.
If you really want OS X you can run it on anything including the sony.- SHv2, on 02/26/2008, -3/+15i wouldn't call vista ultimate a feature...
- selanep, on 02/26/2008, -1/+7you can't run osx on anything and have everything work (wireless, ethernet, sound...). sure you can get it running on certain rigs but you really have to match the hardware apple uses as much as possible if you don't want to spend hours getting everything running 100% or even at all
- Joshuarr, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6I tried to click on the "more images" link, but the link did not work. The URL you provided and the computer you advertise reeks of mediocrity.
- foxter, on 02/26/2008, -3/+19Yes, the MBP is still appealing. In fact, I like both laptops. Now stop pushing your preferences on other people you hypocritical clod.
- streetblader, on 02/26/2008, -5/+12Haha no not appealing.
One word. Vista. - grouchyman, on 02/26/2008, -4/+8Vista fanboi!
- cthellis, on 02/26/2008, -1/+320% faster proc, better body, better battery life, better OS (subjective), WAY more included software (not subjective)... There are certainly features people will pay more for.
I'd certainly give the edge to the $2800 build, though, as you can get the same proc as the MacBook Pro, two 200GB 7200RPM drives, a BR recorder, and the extended battery... Doesn't make one an "idiot" or a "fanboy," though; especially since one of the sticking points for people is what they can't get around... Vista vs OSX.
I'm not a pro-line laptop shopper anyway, as there's no way I'll think of one as a "desktop replacement." You can build some nifty machines, but if I use that money building my own desktop, I end up getting ridiculously more powerful spending even half the price. The regular ol' MacBooks are quite fine if you're looking at the $1100 end of things. (Of course you run into a problem if you want to go substantially cheaper...)- kansai22, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1The processors are the same speed what are u talking about both have 2.6 gig intel T9500 options and the body on the viao is a lot better. The vaio also comes with a lot more software than the MBP.
- abrooks, on 02/26/2008, -5/+14Damn, that thing is ugly!
- jmkiii, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2You rock!!!
- jenniecaute, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3so jealous :[
- gmprunner, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Me too. When I bought my MBP in September of 06 (barely a year and a half ago), it was the absolute best one you could get. Now, it's FAR below the base model. You can't win. :(
- samscomputer2, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Yeah i got mine christmas...you really cant...:(
- gmprunner, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Me too. When I bought my MBP in September of 06 (barely a year and a half ago), it was the absolute best one you could get. Now, it's FAR below the base model. You can't win. :(
- demesisx, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2OR you just might have a use for Final Cut Pro over other editing systems (like I do), the better graphic design tools for Mac, the better interface, or everything else that comes only with macs. I am not a fanboy, it's what I use to edit video and do my art....oh yeah...and also, it can run any operating system....no who's the fanboi?
- Hoov, on 02/27/2008, -1/+4You and your comment.
- iChopPryde, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3haha ya hes totally a fan boy but whatever I am also a fan boy can't wait to own my first macbook pro how can you not be a fan boy of something so awesome :D
- Hoov, on 02/27/2008, -1/+4You and your comment.
- cdubd, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1I bought one too!!
- kansai22, on 02/26/2008, -42/+4Look at this configure it and tell me the MBP is still appealing.
- Fedorian, on 02/26/2008, -21/+64that's it? jeez
- physco827, on 02/26/2008, -7/+5lmao, was thinking the same thing. Not that big of an upgrade.
- digitalpencil, on 02/26/2008, -3/+13What exactly were you expecting? New chipset, more VRAM, multi-touch, bigger drive.
- sancho, on 02/26/2008, -3/+2I'm waiting for a higher resolution screen on the 15". Something around 1680x1050 would be nice. 1920x1200 would be better.
- Radan, on 02/26/2008, -3/+9I was waiting for something that doesn't look like a 6 year old Powerbook...
- Joshuarr, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Exactly. It is a nice design, but I am waiting for the new chassis. Guess I have to limp along at 2.4ghz for awhile longer.
- RevToTheRedline, on 02/26/2008, -1/+9Go buy a Lenovo ThinkPad then you can have something that looks 16 years old.
- mikedub1219, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1i was expecting it to have everything they updated, except they would have a black keyboard like the macbook air and i thought it would be thinner two. also i heard rumors about 2 hard drives. ehh, i guess its alright
- paradigm1220, on 02/26/2008, -2/+3No one is ever satisfied. For once can people just be happy that Apple makes great products? Yeah their price tag is high, but there's much more value in their products than anything else out there. So no, Apple is not for everyone and quit your bitching; be thankful for what we DO have.
- aussieNickuss, on 02/26/2008, -6/+4I can't believe Apple stlll have the nerve to sell the base model with only 1GB of memory and a combo drive!
- Phisolo, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2You are wrong: 2GB and Super Drive:
Base model specs copied from apple store:
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB memory
200GB hard drive1
Double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB- acomj, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1macbook vs macbook pro
The macbook still has a combo drive - aussieNickuss, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Ummm yeah....like acomj said. I was referring to the MacBook....not the Pro.
- acomj, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1macbook vs macbook pro
- Phisolo, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2You are wrong: 2GB and Super Drive:
- deadbaby, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2^^ That's why this wasn't a major announcement. It's a refresh. Happens all the time in the computer industry.
- rhodesy22, on 02/26/2008, -9/+2Looks like the UK store has a spec mistake - the comparison states the 512mb but the initial macbook pro page still states 256mb for the GPU.
GeForce 8600M GT - Direct X 10 right?!
As for no Apple Remote - It was novel at first but not used it much since. When are they going to make it aluminium :(- cawpin, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6It says UP TO 512 MB.
- FDL1, on 02/26/2008, -6/+23/me waits for refurbs and used ones' price to drop
- gordeh, on 02/26/2008, -1/+5Its already happened. Check the refurb page
- sotopheavy, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1/me waits for multitouch women.

- hrush0327, on 02/26/2008, -4/+162removing the apple remote - starting to remove all extras like they did on the ipod with the dock and other accessories
- mikedub1219, on 02/26/2008, -21/+1it comes with a remote
- AdmiralKarelia, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9Not anymore.
- Leicafanboy, on 02/26/2008, -3/+8It makes sense for IT. I have deployed a bunch of aluminum iMacs and MacBook/ MacBook Pro in my office. I have a drawer full of those silly remotes that we will never use.
- tw0bit, on 02/26/2008, -0/+21can i have one?
- bxblox, on 02/26/2008, -0/+10Il give you a dollar for em...
- Drewboy64, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7Screw that, I'll give you $2!
- ShinRaTDR, on 02/26/2008, -2/+6Except the remote was the only extra, not counting charger and battery. And the day apple ships a laptop with no charger or battery is the day I switch to Windows completely.
- astrosmash, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8I guess you'll be using OS X for a good long time then.
- nyrol2, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1Remember when apple stopped shipping the power adapters for the iPods? It would be just so "great" if they did the same with macbooks. Make everyone pay extra for power!
- mikedub1219, on 02/26/2008, -21/+1it comes with a remote
- tschwab15, on 02/26/2008, -46/+12Dude I'm Getting a Dell!!
- SydneyHopper, on 02/26/2008, -23/+4Can you download HD movies from iTunes and play them on the new MacBook Pro?
- ddfall, on 02/26/2008, -1/+11Yes.
- SydneyHopper, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4Thanks ddfall
I appreciate you taking the time to comment- nepalikakro, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Well that was a polite interchange.
- foxter, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5Thank you for having such a civil exchange of information.
- Joshuarr, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1That was really nice of you to thank them for their civility. We all appreciate the kindness!

- SydneyHopper, on 02/26/2008, -14/+2You know, you could relax your 'Dug' muscles and just reply.
Or are you minds slavishly addicted to the idea of keyboard warrior?
You know, as your virtual balls grow, your real ones shrink. - jabberwolf, on 02/26/2008, -7/+4Actually NO.
Not if your definition of HD is 1080.
Apple's definition is 720.
So emphatically NO, not from iTunes anyway.- ShinRaTDR, on 02/26/2008, -2/+3Way to be a prick. We don't see enough of those on digg.
- bigsteve, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4The 17" now has an option for 1920x1200.
- ShinRaTDR, on 02/26/2008, -2/+3Way to be a prick. We don't see enough of those on digg.
- ddfall, on 02/26/2008, -1/+11Yes.
- Thomaschaaf, on 02/26/2008, -26/+8Is the multitouch available in Vista too?
- cawpin, on 02/26/2008, -5/+3I'm sure they will release drivers for it if they aren't already available.
- lgc90, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3I think the patent might fall within the operating system, maybe...
I mean, I've heard it's all firmware, and the hardware is the same. - jabberwolf, on 02/26/2008, -1/+3Actually, they will.
PC's actually have tablets. They just havent released the drivers for it yet. Some trademark hurdles and lawyers to get across. They probably won't call it "multi-touch" as Apple is trying to trademark everything under the sun. Funny because they can trademark a name but cant patent a technology they didnt create!- cthellis, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4They didn't invent the laptop either (though one could posit that they did in it's "modern, recognizable form" ;-) ), but they certainly trademark their product lines. Sony's trademarked "XBRITE-hicolor" and Dell "UltraSharp" and "TrueBright" or what-the-*****-ever, because everybody likes a marketing term. nVidia and "SLI" even though it's no longer the same tech or acronym it was when 3dfx created it? But it's recognizable among the gamer community and plays to their advantage.
"Multi-touch" doesn't mean "anything and everything anyone could possibly think up involving more than one finger..." it's their marketing phrase. Hence "trademark" and not "patent." (Though obviously they've registered for whatever patents they can, which is simply a security measure in tech these days, until they start reforming the BS.)

- Berek, on 02/26/2008, -18/+12Besides the track pad and maybe bumping up the specs a notch, this isn't anything new. I would've expected a blue ray drive.
- cawpin, on 02/26/2008, -4/+2Thank you for stating the obvious.
- crowbar77, on 02/26/2008, -2/+6I didn't, there trying to promote there movie download service so it wouldn't make much sense.
- kalphegor, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4How in the world they try to promote the movie download service when they remove the remote? Can you, Apple, explain this?
- Joshuarr, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1it's called Apple TV. It is somewhat obscure - we wouldn't expect you to have heard of it.

- Thud, on 02/26/2008, -2/+5The refresh in the regular Macbook is more significant IMO. 2.4GHz, 2GB standard, and 250GB hard drive, that's some nice specs for the "entry level" line of notebooks... not that $1500 is really entry level.
But even my nearly 2-year-old black macbook is still plenty fast for Leopard, though I did swap in a 160GB hard drive and 2GB memory, so there's nothing new that I just gotta go order with this latest refresh.
- BlackFox187, on 02/26/2008, -18/+1why does this happen the day after i buy my new macbook? lol
the dell m1330 was the other laptop i was looking into getting, and now they come with ubuntu.
all the day after i order mine. lame...- jagnum1fan, on 02/26/2008, -0/+20Obviously this is your first time on digg otherwise you would have known that they were going to release new MBP's soon
- PPCG4, on 02/26/2008, -2/+2Return it!
- bernandoo, on 02/26/2008, -29/+6ooo it can be outfitted with a sweet graphics card for all the games i can play! oh wait.
- rauz, on 02/26/2008, -1/+18I play all the modern games on my MBP using Bootcamp. Granted, it forces me to use Windows XP but I can live with the pain.
- Commodus, on 02/26/2008, -11/+4Because we all know, a 1-inch thin notebook can handle an 8800M GTS without melting. Right.
- Urkel, on 02/26/2008, -5/+23They're still charging extra for black. White has been eliminated entirely from the rest of the Mac lineup so isn't it time to phase out white and allow black to be a color choice rather than a premium?
- salomejones, on 02/26/2008, -18/+9They're NOT charging extra for black. A white model of the exact same specs costs precisely the same as the black model, and always has. The black model simply does not come in the low-end 1099USD version.
- TheWorm, on 02/26/2008, -2/+23No, you actually do pay about a 150 dollar premium to get black.
- thejokell, on 02/26/2008, -1/+11Now it's a $100 premium. The only difference between the mid-level MacBook in white and the black MacBook is the hard drive. Bump the hard drive up on the white model and you have a $100 difference for black.
/white's better anyway - doesn't get smudged like the black does.- salomejones, on 02/26/2008, -0/+14Whoops, I'm incorrect, you're absolutely right. Apologies for the misinfo there.
- thebuggalo, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4have you seen a white macbook that has been used for several months? The trackpad, keys, and place where you rest your hands get all yellowy and gross looking. I went black, and can't go back.
- DaffyDuck, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1That depends on the person. My wife's white macbook is still all white after several months of use. She uses it a lot too.
- thejokell, on 02/26/2008, -1/+11Now it's a $100 premium. The only difference between the mid-level MacBook in white and the black MacBook is the hard drive. Bump the hard drive up on the white model and you have a $100 difference for black.
- ciram, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7You're wrong. Im not going to bother looking it up now but i know that when they were first released the white model could be upgraded to the exact same specs as the black one and it would still cost 100$ less.
So yes, they charged a houndred bucks for black paint.- salomejones, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4It's actually not paint, but you're right. They do charge 100 bucks more--and their market tolerates it.
- tizzleG, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1fanboys tolerate it.
- salomejones, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2I suppose. Sue us all for liking a laptop to look sweet while it performs with speed and stability that you in the windows world have never known.
- tizzleG, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I didn't realize the paint actually made it faster/better/whatever. In that case, charge away!
Excuse me while I get back to fixing my Windows laptop, it's falling apart as I type. What a terrible mistake I've made.
- TheWorm, on 02/26/2008, -2/+23No, you actually do pay about a 150 dollar premium to get black.

- jagnum1fan, on 02/26/2008, -10/+144Where is the SDK!??!?!
- tcugrilla, on 02/26/2008, -20/+4the sdk is waiting in a corner for you to get a life. go hug your wife, talk to your kids, or pet the dog. if you have none of the aforementioned, just sit back and relax.
- ddfall, on 02/26/2008, -1/+17Some where in Cupertino...
- jer2eydevil88, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3It'll have a March release... I'd rather it work when it launches so I am staying patient.
- Synthesize, on 02/26/2008, -16/+53Underwhelming.
- gmprunner, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2How so? For a relatively quiet update, I think this isn't too shabby.
- KezG, on 02/26/2008, -21/+4Everyone is missing the biggest update to the MacBook - You can now have up to 4 gb Ram! That is huge news! (white/black macbook previously capped at 2)
- dykast, on 02/26/2008, -0/+20Previous SR C2D Macbooks could use 4gb of ram.
- SHv2, on 02/26/2008, -5/+0big ***** deal... *cruises around with his macbook pro with 4gb* better to just get the nicer model from the start...
- AdmiralKarelia, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3All Core 2 Duo MacBooks can take at least 3GB of RAM, even though Apple didn't always offer or mention it. Also, the previous and current models support 4GB.
- AvidPreatorian, on 02/26/2008, -4/+11the wait is over! :)
- Bokista, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9Let the new wait begin.
- brenthals, on 02/26/2008, -4/+10Jeez people, if you just bought one simply call Apple support and they'll take care of you. They'll either send you a new one or credit your account the difference.
- doctorcaligari, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Just called, and they said only orders back thru February 12th are eligible for a credit. I've had mine exactly 30 days, so I lost $250 (refurb MBP). But I still love it anyway!
- AugustZephyr, on 02/26/2008, -11/+3A little disappointed they left multi-touch off the Macbook. Also, when are they finally going to let the Macbook get the sexy aluminum chassis of the MBP and MBA?
- SHv2, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5here is a tip for you. the macbook is the low end model. therefore it won't get the multitouch and it won't get aluminum chassis. deal with it. fork out a little more for the nicer model.
- noloveIII, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4There are a lot of advantages to the poly coating of the macbook such as durability, resistance to dents and better wifi reception. Although imo the aluminum looks better.
- fichek, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Actually I'm glad they didn't add the new trackpad.
I just bought new MacBook a month ago, so seeing more changes than this would make me sad :)
- neelshah85, on 02/26/2008, -10/+2OMG Yesss!!! Looks like the rumor sites got this one right...and maybe best buy might get into a little trouble for letting this leak out early... but regardless, I'm very happy about this news... looks like I'm getting a MBP..
- krische, on 02/26/2008, -10/+5I'm liking the 2GB of RAM standard on both models.
- digitallysick, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1I digg you up feeling to, a few years back I got a power book 17 shortly after they quit making them..
- lukemh, on 02/26/2008, -6/+2not standard on $1,099.00 macbook = you loose
- grouchyman, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Article was about Macbook PRO = you *lose*
- neoseeker191, on 02/26/2008, -12/+39Wow and to think I was excited about this update. Disappointed.
- jpb0104, on 02/26/2008, -0/+16What were you expecting? These updates are exactly what the rumor sites have been speculating for 2 months. And especially not a bad update for a non-event bump. I think most people are excited about the update because they have been putting off a new MBP cause they knew the machines were due for a bump.
I do think we will see a new form-factor MBP next year. But not this year.- neoseeker191, on 02/26/2008, -2/+0I suppose I was expecting Apple to surprise me with something, lower prices would have been nice. lol. Maybe an LED in the Macbook.

- cerberus04, on 02/26/2008, -18/+8bought. it's the fastest MBP ever made in human existence!
- TheWorm, on 02/26/2008, -4/+57Were you expecting them to make a slower one?
- cerberus04, on 02/26/2008, -1/+12I was being reminiscent of when they last updated the Mac Pro, boasting it was the fastest Mac ever. I found myself asking your exact question.
- TheWorm, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Ah, I get it. That's always bugged me about Apple.

- majordickhead, on 02/26/2008, -33/+18keep waiting.... it is new hardware that you will need.. MORON
- Bob042, on 02/26/2008, -5/+10How so? The "old" macbook pros can detect multiple fingers already, as 1 finger moves the mouse, 2 scrolls, and 3 does nothing. Maybe there is a hardware update needed, but it seems like the touchpad can do multitouch already, just not gestures.
- Phil13, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1The Macbook Air has a new trackpad with new hardware in it, the older trackpads lack this hardware which gives the Air and the new MBP this functionality.
Do some research first before digging down people that know what they're talking about. - fichek, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4Yeah, old MB and MBP models support 2 fingers, new gestures need 3.
Rotation might be possible tho... - HQAS, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5I have an "old" (purchased in Sept) MacBook Pro. 3 fingers does nothing in OS X, but it's how I middle-click in Linux on this thing.
OS X might not support it, but I know from everyday use that my trackpad will in fact read 3 fingers.
- Phil13, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1The Macbook Air has a new trackpad with new hardware in it, the older trackpads lack this hardware which gives the Air and the new MBP this functionality.
- digitalpencil, on 02/26/2008, -1/+8Not necessarily. Although it's highly unlikely that Apple will release a software update to bring this functionality to the older gen. There will invariably be a 3rd party solution similar to iScroll2 which brought two-finger scrolling to older PB/iBooks, in spite of Apple remaining adamant that this was impossible as the functionality was entirely derived from new hardware.
- AdmiralKarelia, on 02/26/2008, -2/+12Wow. That's one way to be an ass.

nice catch majordickhead- majordickhead, on 02/26/2008, -4/+8why thank you... as I say, they can digg me down and keep waiting.. if it was software only, it would not be that big a deal in the new MBPs and apple would have released it in the new MB... but hey you can all keep your fingers crossed for that firmware you are so sure will come out.
I am hoping that apple release a firmware that will ship the new MBP with an apple remote - citor, on 02/26/2008, -2/+14well I guess you primarily got dugg down because of the way you replied to joeycerone. There was no reason at all for you to call him a moron.
- zdiddy85, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5You have to live up to your name.
- eOgas, on 02/27/2008, -2/+2This just goes to show that mac users have no idea how a computer works, mainly in the 'software can't change the hardware' department. Come to think about it, wouldn't it be cool if apple released a computer that could update its own hardware? I THOUGHT OF IT FIRST....wait, they probably already have a patent on it. Damn you Steve Jobs!!!!
- jasarien, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2I love how you generalise and group every single Mac user into the category of "not knowing how a computer works". How about you stop and think about all the Mac users that are hardware engineers, or software developers? I'm pretty sure they have some inkling about how a computer works.

- jasarien, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1"why don't people know anything about computers?"
Again with the generalisation. This is one person. One person who might not spend their entire life under the hood of a PC, or some other computer. One person who may not have a computing related degree. One person who prefers to keep up with things they deem more important than knowing how a computer works. If their computer works, and they have no interest in knowing why or how it works, why should they waste their time learning about it? They don't need to know why or how it works for it to do what they want it to do. Welcome to the 21st century. You don't have to be a bearded engineer with a soldering iron and knowledge of Assembler to be able to use a computer these days. Get over yourself.

- wbienek, on 02/26/2008, -12/+4Am I the only one underwhelmed? I was expecting Quad .. 4gb standard now that memory is DIRT CHEAP.. The specs are almost the same as the OLD MBP'z
The only thing I'm thinking might make it worth not buying a 'refurb' older one is if it has longer battery life / run cooler w/ the new .45 nm process- apochcrypha, on 02/26/2008, -15/+2Apple wouldn't be Apple if they didn't rip you off selling overpriced hardware to you.
- Vtorch, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Intel Montevina (possible mobile quad) won't arrive til WWDC. I can't decide whether I should skip Pennryn and go straight to Montevina or wait for Nehalem (aka Intel Core3 Quad) which (I believe is in track for next year)
- GreenAlien, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4"memory is DIRT CHEAP"
And yet in the Apple store the upgrade from 2gb to 4gb memory costs £240. Apple come on, really?!
On Crucial the memory for the Macbook Pro is about £35 for 2gb and about £70 for 4gb.
Apple are charging x7 retail for the upgrade. I know this is nothing new with Apple. They've pulled this ***** for years now. Wish they'd get a clue.
When Apple stop being so anal with their pricing they will have one more switcher to add to their tally. I've been holding off buying a Vaio to see what Apple do with the Macbook Pro update. Very underwhelmed. No blu-ray. Same aging graphics (though double the memory). Same tacky looking spongy keyboard with half sized enter key and tiny arrow keys - take a clue from Sony and add an extra column of keys on the right-hand side - gives a more elegant result.
Looks like I'll be getting the new 17" Sony Vaio AR61S then. Costs substantially less, has a blu-ray burner, 400gb HDD, perfect keyboard. Though it comes with Vista and no XP drivers for the AR range on Sony's site which is one reason I was seeing what Apple do - can at least install XP on a Macbook Pro while I gradually migrate to the Mac. Maybe next year then.
- mike17032, on 02/26/2008, -7/+16I was really hoping for a Blue-Ray drive and a Macbook like keyboard on the Pro. I really dont understand the hold up with the BR drive, and its damn hard to add one after the fact to a laptop.
- jer2eydevil88, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4It's a combination of DRM and form factor that will keep Blu-Ray out of the MBP lineup for at least another year. The tech is there but its so costly that even as an optional addon it would be ridiculous. Personally I'll just download the BluRay rips until they catch up.
- eOgas, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1It could be that Blu-ray is retarded and that Sony paid off the movie studios.
- autoatsakiklis, on 02/26/2008, -0/+41I wonder how much Apple saves offering combo drive in cheapest macbook version.
- m00nmaster, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6It would be cheaper to carry it across all lines, less stock to keep on hand and one drive to support. SuperDrives for everyone!
- AdmiralKarelia, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9It's simply to make a bigger gap between that and the higher-end MacBooks and MacBook Pros. If you give the low-end unit all of the advantages, there's no reason to buy the high-end.
- noloveIII, on 02/26/2008, -1/+8They do it to get people to buy the more expensive macbook. most people could care less about 300 mhz but the want a superdrive
- aussieNickuss, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2This is one exceptional disappointment for me. Apple....FFS....ship a superdrive in the base model. I can go down to my local BigW (WalMart equivalent here in Aus) and buy a $500 lenovo with a DVD burner!
- hutch113, on 02/26/2008, -11/+59Still no DVD burner at the $1099 price point. Still not worth my money.
- digitallysick, on 02/26/2008, -4/+3yeah it should be standard , I got a powerbook it was supposed to be dual layer but it wasn't I feel ripped off to this very day
- jake8689, on 02/26/2008, -18/+3how about right clicking
- CATSCEO, on 02/26/2008, -2/+9***** off.
Right-click has been around since the mouse. - marksands07, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6Wrong! It's multi touch right click. Two fingers on the track pad and press the button. Works on boot camp as well for windows.
- gotamd, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1Couldn't we just have two actual buttons instead of having to put two fingers on the pad while clicking? It seems silly to me to insist that people only use one mouse button.
- cthellis, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Your fingers are there anyway. Meanwhile, a large single button is easier to hit, less prone to mechanical failure, and lets less dust underneath the surface. There are other trade-offs for something you'd be using a tiny fraction of the time compared to primary-clicking.
Admittedly, I'm not sure why they don't employ the same touch detection tech they use in their mice, and the control panel option to go "right-click if I only touch the right side of the button."

- AvidPreatorian, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2actually the double click on a MBP is easier than most "pc" laptops, i switched last year and it's been great. if you knock it without using it, you're just ignorant and no one cares about your opinion.

- acomj, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7Lots of people use DVD. Heck, it negates one of the nice pieces of software Apple has (IDVD). For a content creation machine the lack of a DVD burner is a shame (for what 10$ in parts). the drive isn't even an upgradable option on the lower cpu spec machine.
Sad...- aserer511, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1i said this in my post. it is INCONCEIVABLE that mac wants to be competenet and not have DVDWR capability in a 1100 buck lappie.
- kansai22, on 02/26/2008, -27/+3I told all you to buy the Sony VAIO AR now you waited for this and it has less features and you waited 5 months longer while you could have been enjoying the the Sony.

- freshyill, on 02/26/2008, -1/+18And what version of Mac OS X does it come with? Oh, wait, nevermind.
- kansai22, on 02/26/2008, -13/+1You can get OS X to run on anything. besides that would you rather have OS X or 50 gig Blu-ray RW capabilities and a 600Gb hdd.

- thedragon4453, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3I think they ought to leave the MBP alone. I love the look of those.
The white plastic of the regular Macbook is a bit dated, however.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 02/26/2008, -0/+32Why *should* they redesign the case?
I am sitting in front of a MacBook Pro right now. I have been using computers for almost 25 years, starting with a C64. This here is the most beautiful and slick machine I ever owned. I don't know how the design could be improved except for tiny details.
This is what Antoine Saint-Exupery meant when he said: "Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."
Faster processors, higher resolution displays, more storage? Bring'em on. Change the minimalist design? Please don't.- TheWorm, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2I totally agree. I have a Macbook Pro as well, however what I was talking about in my comment is things that I think it's time that they implement into the Macbook Pro. Things like the magnetic latch, the new style keyboard, and I think it would look pretty cool in black aluminum like the iPod classic.
- AdmiralKarelia, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6The machine still has the advantage in sexy-factor over any PC notebook. I don't see why it needs to change. Same goes for the Mac Pro.
- jer2eydevil88, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2Apple needs to make a carbon fiber version as well as the good old aluminum.
- Cougarcat, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3They also need to add the MacBook's magnetic latch and the easy-to-remove hard drive.
- avalys, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2What is wrong with the case? It's good-looking and functional. The only reason to replace it would be to please the people whose lives revolve around buying the latest gadget, and want to see something new just for change's sake.

- ImpulseControl, on 02/26/2008, -10/+2Hopefully they will bother to write decent windows drivers for this version of the Macbook Pro. One of those fun surprises I found out when I picked up my MBP was that Apple spent exactly 5 minutes writing touchpad & video card drivers... they are the suck.
Funny that I never read about that in any of the reviews.- hrunk, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4You can update your graphics card drivers here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/
I've played, Bioshock, Half Life 2 Episode 2 and CoD4 on my MBP with no problems.- Laxaloot, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2I second that, but replace CoD4 with World in Conflict
- colincornaby, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Apple didn't write the video card drivers for Boot Camp. They're the official ATI or NVidia drivers.
- ImpulseControl, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Games play alright, it's just certain types of graphics that are dog slow. A good example would be coverflow in iTunes on Vista. It looks like a slide show. This isn't the case with the ATI cards, just the NVidia versions. Even with the updated device drivers suggest by hrunk.
The graphics card issues are actually a smaller problem than the trackpad issues. Tapping the touchpad doesn't do anything in vista/XP (as it does in OS X) plus the sensitivity is all off for thing like scrolling.
That being said everything works just fine if you're in OS X.
- hrunk, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4You can update your graphics card drivers here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

iPhone cable.
Wireless keyboard receiver.
ATi TV tuner.
160 GB External HDD.
Webcam.

Although if you're buying a MacBook Pro, you'd already have the integrated webcam, as well as the bluetooth wireless keyboard. So that leaves 4 used ports.- s0u1man, on 02/26/2008, -2/+10Sounds like you're using your laptop as a desktop replacement. Which is fine, but if you're "docking" your notebook you can just pick up a USB hub for all your extra stuff (iPhone cable, wireless keyboard receiver, external hard drive, etc.).

- techweenie1, on 02/26/2008, -1/+11I really wish they'd kill the mini and replace it with a mid-tower that you can at least upgrade the graphics on.
- Urkel, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7Apple made it very clear with the Air that they aren't afraid of the niche market. So It would be nice if they would make a mid-tower sub $2000 Mac where you could upgrade components. You know, for that extremely tiny market that doesn't need their Mac to fit in a glovebox or doesn't feel it's necessary to throw away a perfectly good monitor just because the computer dies.
- EricG, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5I know the day after I buy an iMac and stop waiting for a mid-tower mac, they will come out with one. I too am also waiting for such a Mac but I doubt it will happen.. would be nice as thats exactly what i'd like too.

- EricG, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5I know the day after I buy an iMac and stop waiting for a mid-tower mac, they will come out with one. I too am also waiting for such a Mac but I doubt it will happen.. would be nice as thats exactly what i'd like too.
- aussieNickuss, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5No no no no! Keep the mini ADD a mid-tower. My school uses minis as (low-end) servers. They're very small, quiet and fast. I'm about to get one as a simple file and web server to sit in my office, as well as one to as a media centre for home. The minis are perfect. What Apple also need to make is an "iMac without a screen"...for much cheaper.
- aserer511, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1um, so that;s not what the mini was intended for. at. all.
the mini is supposed to compete with similarly priced dells and be a basic,"oh hi i surf web, do email, word, etc"
- techweenie1, on 02/26/2008, -1/+11I really wish they'd kill the mini and replace it with a mid-tower that you can at least upgrade the graphics on.
- freshyill, on 02/26/2008, -3/+7I'd really like to buy one of the new MacBook Pros, but two things really bug me: The refusal to include the new keyboard that the MacBook Air has (and the MacBook has had for two years), and the awful button/latch. The MacBook is far superior in both areas.
- wiiittttt, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1what new keyboard? the macbook air is using the macbookpro backlit keyboard, and now the MBP has the MBA trackpad
- AdmiralKarelia, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1It's got the *MacBook* keyboard, you mean? It might be backlit, but it's got the chicklet-style separated keys of the MacBook and Apple Keyboard.
- jocamero, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7I agree the latch is pretty bad but I prefer the MacBook Pro's keyboard to the other current Apple keyboards.
- Narbo, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5It may be personal opinion but I find (and from what I read most agree) that the MBP keyboard is nicer to use then the Airs.
If you want an Apple laptop I suggest buying a refurb Santa Rosa MBP. Outside of SSE4 enabled apps (e.g: video encoding) the new MBPs are only ~3-8% faster at everyday tasks and multitouch/5-10% better battery life (via Penryn) is not enough of a reason to pay the price premium.- AdmiralKarelia, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3That would be a good idea if it wasn't a used, rebuilt machine. The thing about refurbs is that you forfeit the three-strike rule of unit replacement. On a new MBP, if you have a bunch of problems with it, Apple will eventually replace it for you. On a refurb, they'll just go through repair after repair, but will never give you a new machine in exchange for that refurb. Even that alone, to me, is worth the two or three hundred I'd save. Not to mention the new features...
- Narbo, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Fair enough but the price difference between a new 2.5 15" and a refurb 2.4 15" is close to $1000. Thats a lot of money for a 5% performance improvement and there is no guarantee you wont get a manufacturing defect on the new one either.

- cadmiumpaint, on 02/26/2008, -5/+5that new keyboard is horrible. impossible to type on.
- ABBiek, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4I agree with these guys. I still use a g4 Powerbook and I LOVE this keyboard. I feel that the Macbook (and Air) keyboard is "cool" but simply not as nice to type on. Here's hoping they don't port the chicklet-board over to the MBP in the next design as that's most likely what I'll be getting as this dinosaur goes... well, the way of the dinosaurs.
- Protoss, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3I have a Macbook and this has to be the best keyboard ever. I've typed on many laptops before, and would always screw up, either hitting a different key, or the keyboard would just feel weird. But my Macbook keyboard just seems so perfect.
- wiiittttt, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1what new keyboard? the macbook air is using the macbookpro backlit keyboard, and now the MBP has the MBA trackpad
- fifaigor, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6Nah actually i was thinking it would be less powerful and would use a square mouse from the 70s.
- eOgas, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2That's was I was looking forward to also. Yet another disappointment from apple.
- rdolishny, on 02/26/2008, -7/+2Check out the chicks in the Track Pad Gestures demo video page on the Apple site. :)
- lukemh, on 02/26/2008, -1/+5link?
- TajesMahoney, on 02/26/2008, -3/+139hoorah! My laptop is now outdated!
- BossKey, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6So's mine. I've been using a 5-year-old G4...now I'll pull the trigger on a new one.
- cthellis, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3I think yours may have been outdated a bit before Tajes'. ;-)
- BossKey, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Well, that's the interesting and wonderful thing. It hasn't felt outdated, really.
Macs tend to be able to stay in service longer.
But it's finally time to get it up to date.
- BossKey, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Well, that's the interesting and wonderful thing. It hasn't felt outdated, really.
- xXMetalJesusXx, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2I'm still using my ibook G4...and I will until it finally dies.
I buy my Mac computers for longevity...something Dell should look up.
- cthellis, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3I think yours may have been outdated a bit before Tajes'. ;-)
- bxblox, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Only technically... the difference is negligible.
- AlphaToker, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0So does mine. I got it in march of 2006, a 2GHz Intel Core Duo. It already feels vintage lol
- j0se, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1its been outdated since it has left the manufactures warehouse.
- AppleMacMan, on 02/27/2008, -1/+0True but I've since upgraded my MacBook to 4GB of RAM and I just ordered a 200GB Hard Drive running at 7200 RPM yesterday!!! So much for being outdated. (^__^)
- chadian22, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1you still don't have the multi-touch trackpad (which is really the only new distinguishing feature), although there are the increased CPU cache/speeds.
- AppleMacMan, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0The speed increase isn't significant and the multi-touch pad is something I'd probably never use. However my new hard drive runs at 7200 RPM not the standard 5400 RPM that come with these new MacBooks. I should receive it from macsales.com either tomorrow or Thursday. Looks like I still win. :)
- UnterDenLinden, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1Except for you have to click your mouse to zoom in. n00b.
- AlphaToker, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1hehe
