- jonthebishop, on 11/16/2008, -2/+15I have noticed these cracks starting to appear on the back of my white 3G also. It is good to know I am not the only one with the issue.
- larryjr88, on 11/17/2008, -6/+17Apple sues everything that walks.
I see no problem with them taking some hits as well. People pay the premium for the Apple logo, and in the past few years there's been nothing to show for it. - alainedouard, on 11/16/2008, -1/+11Apple has to step up and improve the quality builds of their iPhones.
I think the release of the iPhone 3G was rushed (poor build quality of iPhones, power adapter recalls, etc.)
I'm not sure but, I think it's only the early batches that are problematic.
The early adopters should get swapped iPhone without any charges for those problem (even cosmetic ones). - gaqua, on 11/17/2008, -1/+9Back to Aluminum, Apple!
Or at least some kind of high-density ABS without a glossy "scratch-in-a-second" back coat.
My Treo was made of plastic and didn't have any cracks. Nokias are made of plastic and I had tons of those that didn't break.
You'd think they'd use the "brick" technology from their notebooks to build cell phones. - Optiks, on 11/17/2008, -3/+8Not to worry. Apple is already working on another replacement that will render these obsolete anyway. Then another, and another, and another.... Just keep buying them and smile!
- tnoy, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4Don't worry, Apple will come out with a newer iPhone that you can buy to replace the one with the cracks.

as long as people will pay for it. - bingo000, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3As if Apple didn't see it coming.
- linagee, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3@DrLeePhD: Do you own stock in apple something?
- Matt88, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3Should it be called the iPhallus?
- gaqua, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2My point was that my other cell phones WERE made of plastic and didn't crack or break, which is why I suggested Apple use a high-density ABS (plastic) that was not glossy.
- CressCrowbits, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2The point is that they are already like that when they are sold.
Seriously, the article is only like three lines long. - mos6507, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2It still sucks
- roctimo, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2iBone
- xombi242, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3The headphone jack looks pretty brutal though.
- madpuppy, on 11/17/2008, -2/+4No, Apple wouldn't do that to their loyal sheep.....customer base!
- megamod, on 11/17/2008, -2/+3I try to be careful and have tried not to lean on something when my iPhone is in my front pocket, I've even accidentally sat on my iPhone once but I still have no cracks. Am I just lucky?
- DrLeePhD, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1@linagee I don't even own a mac. People are lame for suing when something doesn't work better than it was engineered for. Overall the products are pretty good, but people buy the stuff as a fashion statement or status symbol half the time instead of as a useful product.
@matt88.. debating grammar on the internet? I was drunk. What's your excuse?
go back to commenting youtube videos. - i38warhawk, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1It's all about the percentages. If a high percent are coming with this defect then Apple has a real problem on their hands. If it's only a few thousand then they should just step up and replace them.
- stewlava, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1whatever it is, it cracks...
and to the best of my knowledge it would take a lot more to make aluminum crack - inactive, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Ceramics is an ideal material. Unfortunately in this case it a machining issue, subsurface damage has resulted in cracking.
- frampo4, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1I got my girlfreind a new ipod nano for christmas, I took it out the delivery box and noticed the screen has a small chip on the top left. Its brand new direct from their online shop.... this is exactly why i hate apple and think apple fanboys really need to open their eyes. "Apple tax" AND defective products, yet people flock to them because they are shiny.
- X9001, on 11/17/2008, -2/+3I have taken the time to learn that I do not have an iPhone because it is a self masturbatory device
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Your engineering analysis is the situation is stunning. Shuttle or bridge designer?
- RealHyperX, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1How about email search capability? Or even song search capability? Two features I need.
- SpookyET, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1The so-called scratches like hell in your pocket, especially the bottons and the bezel. It's utter crap when cloth and lint scratch the silver stuff. There is no dust in my pockets.

totomix, sts, profesjonal typy - DrLeePhD, on 11/17/2008, -12/+12Come on people stop suing apple. you bought the damn thing. Most brand-name stuff is still worse... apple products are pretty good quality. they sell in huge quantities so people complain but it could be ALOT worse. And nobody complains about hairline cracks on trackfones.
- secondfiddle, on 11/17/2008, -0/+0One second please.......BWHAAAAA ! The Ch Ina company that produces the iphone would never let phones with cracks get past quality control.
- mishaneah, on 11/17/2008, -1/+1WAAAA! I want my product to be made of mithril and appear with a magic elf fart. Manufacturing processes are always improving but are restrictive and not perfect. My guess is they are using injection molded glass filled Poly Carbonate on the back face. Jobs' reality distortion field stops short of countering basic chemistry and physics. There is no perfect moldable material that will make everyone's problems disappear overnight. The best you can do is support today's manufacturing processes in the hops of improving them for the next revision.
- GeckoSlayer, on 11/17/2008, -1/+1Apple's iPhone 3G is made of a ceramic material, not plastic..
- AlanSim, on 11/17/2008, -0/+0It's not plastic; it's ceramic.
- johnny81, on 02/13/2009, -0/+0great! and its just percentage thingy

- DeathJux, on 11/17/2008, -2/+1You're going to get buried into oblivion, but I think this was a hilarious finale to the build-up comments you left.
KRAKOW KRAKOW! TWO DIRECT HITS! - stewlava, on 11/17/2008, -2/+1did anyone not see the aluminum being replaced by plastic to be a problem?
- rolf, on 11/17/2008, -4/+2If your willing to buy it for the current feature set and performance, why should the next one make it obsolete? What the difference between them and intel, or any car company? Should they stop trying to build things better as we go forward?
- Mizzike, on 11/17/2008, -4/+2My InvisibleShield kicks ass. It's the best scratch protection for the iPhone, plus it's the only "protective case" I know of that's dockable without modification. I'm sure there are others out there, but InvisibleShield has been awesome.
- r3zonance, on 11/17/2008, -3/+1Anywhere there is a hole in the plastic casing is going to be a weak point, that's just unavoidable.
The headphone jack has obviously had some considerably pressure applied to as it hasn't "just cracked" , it has "cracked and depressed the plastic surround", which makes you wonder what else happened to it (i.e. sat on it to push the camera surround in.
I mean, who'd have thought that a 1mm thick piece of plastic wouldn't be really durable. - Matt88, on 11/17/2008, -4/+2As far as phones go they're not cheap - I would expect better if I bought one.
PS. If you're going type something in CAPITALS to make it more prominent, at least get it right. A lot is two words.
While I'm at it, don't start a sentence with 'And' (but at least you started that sentence with a capital letter, not like the previous one). - asgardshill, on 11/17/2008, -5/+2"New Yorker Avi Koschitzki"
