- Berkana, on 05/06/2008, -13/+102Apple's product line is too small to justify such a huge store. What are they going to fill the store with? Even if they have an auditorium, genius bar, studio, and a huge glass staircase, there's only so much they can put in the store.
- DigitAl56K, on 05/06/2008, -13/+72Rumor is they designed this thing around Steve's head..
- DeathJux, on 05/06/2008, -3/+50Having worked at the Regent Street store, Apple fills the extra space with seas of Macbooks/iMacs that are usually all occupied with free-loaders throughout the day. It's one of the perks of the Apple store, free internet. I remember one guy who was there almost open-to-close every day.
Also, there are lots of 3rd party products and accessories that Apple displays as well: printers, iPod speakers, keyboards, Wacom tablets, etc. - sleepingcitizen, on 05/06/2008, -37/+78waste of space.
- lava, on 05/06/2008, -13/+48Wow, that's like 3 blocks away from where I live. I can't wait to not care that much.
- gojcaj, on 05/06/2008, -40/+73who the ***** cares?
- defectDS, on 05/06/2008, -3/+32But it has gotten to the point where you guys are so fed up with Apple fanboys that you start complaining about fanboys before there are any. Your bickering is become more annoying than the fanboys themselves, so just relax and click another story for all of our sakes!
- nextyoyoma, on 05/06/2008, -9/+36ok, ok, we get it, you don't like apple. sheesh.
- Dumbledorito, on 05/06/2008, -10/+36So I guess this is the "Big Digg?"
- openaddy, on 05/06/2008, -3/+26"Apple estimates 1,500-2000 customers/hour will visit."
Really?? At that rate they'll go through the entire population of Boston in a month... - jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -5/+25"It's something else inferiority-complex ravaged Bostonians can hold over New York."
Yes, because all we have now are superior colleges, better sports teams, greater historic value, less pollution, etc. - DigitAl56K, on 05/06/2008, -1/+17Yes. You obviously take after your mother.
- zimsters, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14Great, a store that has TWICE the number of homeless people checking facebook than their New York branch.
- alittleroy101, on 05/06/2008, -0/+13Don't forget much better clam chowder.
- PaulGriffin, on 05/06/2008, -11/+24Why?
Why does it need to be so big? It's not like this store will have anymore variety than the other ones. - BrendanSheehan, on 05/06/2008, -4/+15Biggest one on the world looks half the size of the London store?
- RSTaichi, on 05/06/2008, -21/+31I love Apple's products, but their retailing operation (and the brand identity they've developed to support it) is just awful. Apple as somewhat upscale consumer brand, modeled a little too heavily on Gap and VW, with cheery, somewhat knowledgeable, somewhat human Apple-bot staff, who are more brand ambassadors than computer people... Maybe it's a necessary evil (and it's been financially successful), but apple seems as bland and corporate as Microsoft ever was, just a little better dressed.
- XHashmeerX, on 05/06/2008, -1/+11With trendy schools like Emerson around the corner, kids will literally hang out in there day in and day out.
- brufleth, on 05/06/2008, -0/+9You've never been to Boston have you?
It has a ridiculous number of colleges. Last I heard it was 1 in 4 people on the street were college students during the school year. Many of those students have large disposable incomes and they're also trend conscious which makes them prime Apple customers.
Concerning economic problems in Boston, housing prices in the metro area stayed relatively flat overall (with variation up and down in smaller areas). You have a lot of people who A) bought places for the long term and B) rent from people who have owned their buildings for decades. These people aren't all that affected by the sub prime debacle. While some suburbs are seeing increases in foreclosures you have to go pretty far out to find this.
I know because I live here and occasionally look into buying a place. Prices haven't changed much. There were a number of places that went up for sale a couple years ago because people thought prices would plummet but unless you go out to Dedam or up towards Revere you're not going to see much of a difference.
I haven't heard of any sort of major unemployment issues either. I work for a big company which can't seem to find enough people to hire. As far as I know there is a lack of workers because cost of living and property is so expensive. Plus the weather sucks. - oblique63, on 05/06/2008, -2/+11How dare you call me a whore!
- inactive, on 05/06/2008, -1/+10Time to visit with a USB drive.
- nbyn, on 05/06/2008, -0/+9But our public transportation stops running at 1 AM :-(
- bendiggn, on 05/06/2008, -0/+9o.0
It's an "Apple" store. You can get an "Apple" computer there. Or ask about "Apple" products. - victorycig, on 05/06/2008, -1/+10My iPhone didn't make *me* any sexier :(
- LemmingJesus, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9I thought my life was boring.
- artisresistance, on 05/06/2008, -0/+8You people take this ***** way too seriously.
- EdwardsNH, on 05/06/2008, -0/+8Never been to Boston, have you?
- SirBrittanicus, on 05/06/2008, -5/+13Think it'll be big enough?
- jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -0/+7*chowdah
- arsh89, on 05/06/2008, -5/+12well said. I'm a mac owner and a fan of their products... but seriously, every time I enter an apple store, it really pissed me off for some reason. I think you just explained it.
- cthellis, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8*cancels trip to Home Depot for fertilizer*
- IpecacNeat, on 05/06/2008, -2/+9Except when it come to everything that matters.
- kingofkolt, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8To debate his comment is to prove his point.
-- a concerned Bostonian - MacParrot, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8Apple pumps money into the local economy by building big store
Apple hires locals to man store so adding more money
Apple clerks might actually be helpful instead of surly like at most other stores "down the road"
There are probably a "few" people in Boston who can afford new computers (Macs or otherwise)
You're yet another idiot troll
Yeah I think that covers everything - BufordT, on 05/06/2008, -0/+7Tourists.
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 05/06/2008, -2/+8The Green Monster motif is just a covering while the exterior is finished beneath it. The actual building will be a typical Apple glass box:

http://www.archboston.org/community/showpost.php?p ... - inactive, on 05/06/2008, -7/+13A confirmed technology article on Digg? Finally... it's been a while.
And that's sounds pretty much amazing. I'm not a huge Apple fan, but that sounds like something to visit and check out while in the Boston area. - migitalwarfare, on 05/06/2008, -0/+6yeah, i hear they closed down fenway park, boston commons, the entirety of faneuil hall, the garden, and the multitude of museums. all that's left is newbury comics and dunkin donuts, so a new apple store is a huge highlight
- jrbrewin, on 05/06/2008, -1/+7having been to the regent street apple store i can vouch for the freeloaders. it's definately a case of the store being in an ideal location if you're on regent street and it starts to rain. Yay! free internet and music, rather than Yay! apple products to buy.
shame they moved the refurbished sales table from near the exit. T'was funny watching the chavs make mad dashes towards the exit with un-paid-for laptops. heh. - cthellis, on 05/06/2008, -1/+6That is way more dedication to a reply than the post warranted.
Bravo! - tekiek, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5People in Boston
- NegativeIon, on 05/06/2008, -2/+7It's really just a retail space-as-advertisement. They mostly just sell the low end of their product line in the stores. The point is to draw people in and be very friendly, and hope they come back or buy online. also, the point is to advertise that Apple is doing well enough to afford such excess.
- Lemonion, on 05/06/2008, -2/+7Not all variations of it. There should be 16 combinations.

If you are going to Fap in Binary, at least get the sequence right.
Your robot gf will thank you for it later. - TROY7, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Why Boston?
- mciampa1214, on 05/06/2008, -1/+5Hopefully it will be open before 2015
- Skod, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4I work around the corner from that store(on newbury and exeter), been watching them tear up the building and street for the last while, i just wonder why? Also, they seem to have put it on the wrong side of the block, an apple store seems more the sort of boutique style shop you would find on newbury....
- Thayer75, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4::groan::
- danny951, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4hmm, kind of like your comment.. and all the rest of these comments.. mine included
- jayobear, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4So he's a heavy chopping knife for cutting meat or vegetables?
- MacParrot, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Three of the Virginia Stores (there's a fourth, but it seems kinda pointless to just go there to see a retail store) have great customer service. They're ready to help, but if you're doing something and they see you don't have questions they back off after the first one. As it should be. Maybe you just need to be less of a smug douchebag ready to be annoyed when you enter a retail location?
