New Boston Apple Store Largest In the World
gizmodo.com — Later this month, Apple is opening its latest flagship store on Boylston Street in Boston. The store's main claim to fame? It's huge. We're talking largest Apple Store in the world, by square footage.

It's an "Apple" store. You can get an "Apple" computer there. Or ask about "Apple" products. - zongamin, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3You are stupid.
- MacParrot, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Maybe you should "Warp" over there!!!
Hey! Thanks! I'll be here all week! - pixelperfect, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Yes, you were.
- jlmillstein, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1This widget is a webcam showing the construction of the new Apple store on Newbury street. It's huge and takes up half of your dashboard, but I put it up from time to time to see how things are going.

- MurphyMac, on 05/06/2008, -12/+6For some reason I thought there was a store on Newbury - I walked way down looking for it last year. But if I remember right it was a reseller or something lame like that. Looking forward to seeing this store. Sounds like one of the truly remarkable ones....
- citgod, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2theres a place called TechSuperpowers that supports all apple products, not sure if they do resale tho
- aquanutz, on 05/06/2008, -31/+5Hooray! Too bad Boston (and all of Massachusetts in general) sucks ass. Yes, I do live here and can't wait to get out.

- BoonTobias, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0i bet that store is gonna get sacked
- iloveazngurlzs, on 05/06/2008, -3/+2why make such a massive store for such a small amount of products? Another testament to the incessant douchebaggery associated with the apple logo.
- MurphyMac, on 05/06/2008, -3/+3Here's a link to a Google map of the site. You can get an idea of the size. http://tinyurl.com/5e784a
- Berkana, on 05/06/2008, -13/+102Apple's product line is too small to justify such a huge store. What are they going to fill the store with? Even if they have an auditorium, genius bar, studio, and a huge glass staircase, there's only so much they can put in the store.
- locojones, on 05/06/2008, -43/+46They're going to fill the store with pompous, self-centered, brainwashed masses who are depserate for a piece of technology to make them feel like they're cool and fit in with the rest of the pretentious people that show up.
- nextyoyoma, on 05/06/2008, -9/+36ok, ok, we get it, you don't like apple. sheesh.
- adrames, on 05/06/2008, -19/+8Not Apple, just the elitist Apple fanboys.
- defectDS, on 05/06/2008, -3/+32But it has gotten to the point where you guys are so fed up with Apple fanboys that you start complaining about fanboys before there are any. Your bickering is become more annoying than the fanboys themselves, so just relax and click another story for all of our sakes!
- chesscat, on 05/06/2008, -14/+3Sucks to be you-a Windows user.
- jrbrewin, on 05/06/2008, -12/+4"But it has gotten to the point where you guys are so fed up with Apple fanboys that you start complaining about fanboys before there are any."
much like the macfapping has begun before there are any products to fap about? Pot, meet kettle.
"Sucks to be you-a Windows user." I'd prefer to say "doesn't suck to not be an apple user" is more correct in this case. - Wilsomatic, on 05/06/2008, -2/+4Why does one Company/OS/Brand have to be better than another. Can't people just be happy with what they have and what they like?
- wacomwacoff, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4So? Go find a story about Apple fanboys saying something elitist and complain there. You're assuming everyone who shops at an Apple store is an elitist fanboy, which is a dickish sort of generalization. Sort of like me saying "all PC users are conservative pricks".
- adrames, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Actually I'm an Ubuntu user. I'm not usually one to flame "fanboys," but seriously, I think everyone would be ripping on MS if they built a "super-mega store." Obviously Digg is full of Apple sympathizers.
- adrames, on 05/06/2008, -19/+8Not Apple, just the elitist Apple fanboys.
- chesscat, on 05/06/2008, -13/+8Bitter much? Boo hoo for you, you poor Windows user.

- wacomwacoff, on 05/06/2008, -5/+4Oh, you're so clever. Use a PC do you? And you're calling Apple users 'brainwashed'? Sure.

- DeathJux, on 05/06/2008, -3/+50Having worked at the Regent Street store, Apple fills the extra space with seas of Macbooks/iMacs that are usually all occupied with free-loaders throughout the day. It's one of the perks of the Apple store, free internet. I remember one guy who was there almost open-to-close every day.
Also, there are lots of 3rd party products and accessories that Apple displays as well: printers, iPod speakers, keyboards, Wacom tablets, etc.- jrbrewin, on 05/06/2008, -1/+7having been to the regent street apple store i can vouch for the freeloaders. it's definately a case of the store being in an ideal location if you're on regent street and it starts to rain. Yay! free internet and music, rather than Yay! apple products to buy.
shame they moved the refurbished sales table from near the exit. T'was funny watching the chavs make mad dashes towards the exit with un-paid-for laptops. heh. - rodrigo74, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3The Apple stores in Europe that I've been at (Belgium, Norway, Germany) only access Apple.com..that keeps the freeloaders out.
What's the reason to have the whole net open?- Cine, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4To give people an incentive to use the computers, get used to the system, and want to buy it. It's kind of genius.
- jrbrewin, on 05/06/2008, -1/+7having been to the regent street apple store i can vouch for the freeloaders. it's definately a case of the store being in an ideal location if you're on regent street and it starts to rain. Yay! free internet and music, rather than Yay! apple products to buy.
- TheUngod, on 05/06/2008, -3/+2Why they're going to fill it with yuppies of course. As a Bostonian I can say, we have more than our fair share of pseudo intellectual mac fanboys/girls.
- BufordT, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Maybe they are just different in their approach to product placement in a store. Instead of jamming every last piece of discounted ***** onto already over crowded shelves and display tables, they make these places feel roomy and simplistic. I've only been to a couple of Apple Stores, but if I wanted to go to buy a computer based solely on store appearance and atmosphere, I would definitely choose them over Best Buy and the like.
- TheUngod, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1If that's your criteria for buying a computer, you may as well get a 5 year old POS, because chances are it will do what you want.
- wacomwacoff, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1My criteria for buying a computer is based on thoughtful design, inside and out. It's hard to see why people would buy a Windows machine when they can get a well-built, well-designed, reliable, powerful Mac for the same price as a PC -- and it even runs Windows natively.
- Dubbsacc, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3It's hard to see that people want freedom in their choice of hardware?
- wacomwacoff, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Let me rephrase that: It's not hard to see that freedom of choice is best, but that goes both ways. Different people have different criteria and preferences in what machines they buy and work with. So it's hard to understand why Mac people get so much grief from PC owners... especially considering that these days a Mac is just another flavor of Intel PC.
- TheUngod, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1My criteria is to be able to specify exactly what I want in my computer, thus making it far more thoughtful inside and out than any pre-built machine.
- BufordT, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1That is why I used the word "if" (I wanted to go buy a computer based solely on store appearance.....)
- wacomwacoff, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1My criteria for buying a computer is based on thoughtful design, inside and out. - 954GeNeRaL, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2It's possible they may move their training center there as well, that is currently in the Prudential Center, right next door.
- johnpaul191, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1The big stores have a presentation theater. They also have tons of demo computers. On a day to day basis, 3rd party products (hardware and software) and free internet on a sea of Macs is great. It's nice to get to see Mac/iPod accessories hands-on in the stores. It's also nice to have a place with free internet access when you are away from home. sometimes you don't want to carry a laptop and hope to sniff out open WiFi.
From a biz standpoint, think about it. The iPod is massive. Many people will go to the Apple store to buy an iPod or accessories (as opposed to buying a case online based on a jpeg). While they are there, they may hop onto one of the many Macs and play around.
There has been an issue for years that display Macs in (non-Apple) stores were not running properly, or flat out turned off. That's no way to sell any product. It's like cars at a dealership not actually being running models, or TVs at Best Buy not having a power cord.
At the end of the day, the Apple stores actually turn a profit on top of educating consumers and providing customer support. Much like the iTunes music store, their goal was to break even, or make a small profit. Apple's intention with the stores was make sure people have a place to go with knowledgeable Mac people. Anyone that wandered into a CompUSA or Microcenter had a 50/50 chance of finding an abysmal Mac section and clueless salespeople. Apple's position of making the whole widget also means the sales people don't seem to care if you come in, figure out what Mac you want, and then go home and order it from Amazon or something. It's still a sale for Apple. If they were not obvious Mac enthusiasts, i would almost think they didn't care if you ever bought anything.
- locojones, on 05/06/2008, -43/+46They're going to fill the store with pompous, self-centered, brainwashed masses who are depserate for a piece of technology to make them feel like they're cool and fit in with the rest of the pretentious people that show up.

We are powerless. - RSTaichi, on 05/06/2008, -21/+31I love Apple's products, but their retailing operation (and the brand identity they've developed to support it) is just awful. Apple as somewhat upscale consumer brand, modeled a little too heavily on Gap and VW, with cheery, somewhat knowledgeable, somewhat human Apple-bot staff, who are more brand ambassadors than computer people... Maybe it's a necessary evil (and it's been financially successful), but apple seems as bland and corporate as Microsoft ever was, just a little better dressed.
- arsh89, on 05/06/2008, -5/+12well said. I'm a mac owner and a fan of their products... but seriously, every time I enter an apple store, it really ***** me off for some reason. I think you just explained it.
- jrbrewin, on 05/06/2008, -4/+3last time i was in the bluewater store in kent, england (looking for some cheap bose earphones (shoulda known better than going to apple)), i literally LOLd listening to one of the sales staff try to describe the difference between a normal macbook, and an air. "it's because it's got wireless built in"... apparently.
You'd think they'd at least train people on the product line! sadly, it seems to be perceived style over content for their sales staff too most of the time.- Wilsomatic, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3The difference between the Macbook and the Macbook Air is that the Air is thinner and therefore better and justified to have a higher price. Don't ask me how, It's just what Steve Jobs said.
- wacomwacoff, on 05/06/2008, -6/+2The Macbook Air has a flash-based hard drive, which is a huge cost right there ($900 or so added to the machine). The whole thing is so thin and light that it's startling.
- wacomwacoff, on 05/06/2008, -3/+6I disagree. I think they're reinventing the way retail stores work for the better. If you ever get the chance to visit the NYC flagship store (the big glass cube) you can't possibly call it 'bland'; it's like visiting the store of the future.
- protogenxl, on 05/06/2008, -3/+2I went in to the Apple store in Bridgewater and asked one of the guys at the counter if they had any Ipod Radio Remots and he looked at me like I had 2 heads. It got to the point where I had to grab a open mac book and show him it in the apple store.
- rebotfc, on 05/06/2008, -2/+5I don't see how you can say it's aweful Apple retail stores bring more revenue per sq foot than nearly any other retail store.
They all have free wi-fi, you can mess around with their products without people hassling you and they generally are quire spacious. - koft, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Yea, it's just another retail joint.

- PaulGriffin, on 05/06/2008, -11/+24Why?
Why does it need to be so big? It's not like this store will have anymore variety than the other ones.- NegativeIon, on 05/06/2008, -2/+7It's really just a retail space-as-advertisement. They mostly just sell the low end of their product line in the stores. The point is to draw people in and be very friendly, and hope they come back or buy online. also, the point is to advertise that Apple is doing well enough to afford such excess.
- PaulGriffin, on 05/06/2008, -5/+6I always get the feeling they're trying to push their smug douchebaggery on me when I enter one of their retail facilities.
- cthellis, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3I get bothered far less in Apple stores than similar retail outlets. They just put the stuff out there and let me play with it, and look up if I have a question. (Depends on the area, I guess. NJ and NY are great. One NM location had more bothersome employees. BTW: I only like "New" states. ;-) )
I rather imagine that when you toss around phrases like "smug douchebaggery," however, you're in possession of just a LEEEEEEETUL TEEEEENY TIIIIIINY bit of negative bias. - MacParrot, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Three of the Virginia Stores (there's a fourth, but it seems kinda pointless to just go there to see a retail store) have great customer service. They're ready to help, but if you're doing something and they see you don't have questions they back off after the first one. As it should be. Maybe you just need to be less of a smug douchebag ready to be annoyed when you enter a retail location?
- jayobear, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1You missed NH, the happening state.

- Skod, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4I work around the corner from that store(on newbury and exeter), been watching them tear up the building and street for the last while, i just wonder why? Also, they seem to have put it on the wrong side of the block, an apple store seems more the sort of boutique style shop you would find on newbury....
- brufleth, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4They probably couldn't get approval to level one of the buildings on Newbury. Or the prices were more stupid than even they were willing to pay. This way they're between the "City Under Glass" mall at the base o the Pru AND Newbury street so they can get the soccer moms on a trip to shop in the city along with the Ugg wearing masses of wealthy consumers on Newbury.
- jdpalite, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Thank god it is not on Newbury. It's way too big and overly corporate.

- heystoopid, on 05/06/2008, -8/+3Given that Boston is in the middle of a massive financial implosion and total economic meltdown from the mortgage subprime crisis , unemployment sky rocketing to new heights every day sounds like this store is a total folly , as very few Bostonians will have the cash funds needed to pay Apple's higher prices for less computing that cost three times as much as the one's available from it's competitors just down the road !
- danny951, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Please... just because your favorite media outlet is raging about an "economic meltdown" doesn't mean you have to believe them.
- MacParrot, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8Apple pumps money into the local economy by building big store
Apple hires locals to man store so adding more money
Apple clerks might actually be helpful instead of surly like at most other stores "down the road"
There are probably a "few" people in Boston who can afford new computers (Macs or otherwise)
You're yet another idiot troll
Yeah I think that covers everything - brufleth, on 05/06/2008, -0/+9You've never been to Boston have you?
It has a ridiculous number of colleges. Last I heard it was 1 in 4 people on the street were college students during the school year. Many of those students have large disposable incomes and they're also trend conscious which makes them prime Apple customers.
Concerning economic problems in Boston, housing prices in the metro area stayed relatively flat overall (with variation up and down in smaller areas). You have a lot of people who A) bought places for the long term and B) rent from people who have owned their buildings for decades. These people aren't all that affected by the sub prime debacle. While some suburbs are seeing increases in foreclosures you have to go pretty far out to find this.
I know because I live here and occasionally look into buying a place. Prices haven't changed much. There were a number of places that went up for sale a couple years ago because people thought prices would plummet but unless you go out to Dedam or up towards Revere you're not going to see much of a difference.
I haven't heard of any sort of major unemployment issues either. I work for a big company which can't seem to find enough people to hire. As far as I know there is a lack of workers because cost of living and property is so expensive. Plus the weather sucks.- heystoopid, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3Actually in Boston like every other big US City hidden behind the thin veneer of the upper crust rich suburbs lay a number of ghetto's of varying ethnic minorities including illegal immigrants who have fled countries where the US Government has officially backed repressive Military regimes for a new and better life in the land of the gringo's responsible for their repression in the first place what an interesting conundrum !
Now like every other city , there is a pool of very dirty very low paid menial jobs that most White Americans point blank refuse to do but the city would not function for one day without them , but most people take for granted because they refuse to see or remove their rose colored glasses !
Now basically given the existing socio-economic wealth distribution distorted bell curve for the US , a minimum of 90% of all College Students don't have all that much spending power as they don't have rich parents or grandparents like Prescott Bush to support them , they rely on a combination of summer jobs/part time work/government student loans and scholarships to enable them to work their way through college to earn that advanced degree so that every peso they earn is basically earmarked for subsistence living or education expenses for the entire duration until graduation plus when they can earn some real dinero but even then they must pay back those government student loans !
Now below this group are the lowest of the low , which range from ethnic minorities where unemployment ranges from fifty to ninety percent depending on age group and economic times as they are usually the last on so they become the first to be laid off and have low educational qualifications caused by a number of socio-economic reasons ! Below these are two sub groups the even lower paid below $6 per hour illegal migrants who have the dirtiest and filthiest jobs and are basically employed by cheap ass arrogant/racist people seeking the bigger lions share of the pie as they see it , so they can live in luxury in the so called upper class suburbs and in US pre Civil War Era would have been no better then the worst of the Southern Slave owner white trash families Louisiana style !
After that we have the combination of homeless wandering street nomads and others eking a living in various charity hostels run by the Salvation Army and so forth which range from former patients and inmates of closed state mental homes , some made homeless by being victims of circumstances outside their control , others who have drug and alcohol addiction problems and those who have fled to escape abusive and dysfunctional families for wide variety of assorted but well documented reasons !
And as always most Americans refuse to recognize the seedier side of life in their city and the homeless and nomadic population are forever being harassed/abused/tortured by authority figures such as police even more so since 9/11 for no other reason then the usual they have no voice/no money so no one really cares period , so it is open season and beat a bum a day for fun !
It would interesting to know how you can back up your claim with full details of these so called rich high disposable income college undergraduates types as we would all like to be their best friends and leech off them too if possible , plus the fact that in all large cities there is a fair percentage of large underground subterranean tunnels and habitats hidden from view from the surface dwelling occupants who just do not realize just how large and extensive they are and are habitable in adverse winter weather conditions along with large numbers of abandoned inner urban buildings and warehouses and closed factories manufacturing plants on the EPA pollution list and assorted State Institutions from another era just rotting away abandoned !
And yes Virginia , even Boston has it's problems only some people are far too silly to look behind the false picture they paint to cover reality and don't bother to look for the obvious signs for a sub group that always prefers to keep a low profile away from an abusive police force that harasses them !
I luv your lack of basic research , please try again !- brufleth, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2I live here, I'm in the housing market, I went to college here, the 1 in 4 people are students figure was from an accurate source, I work here, etc.
I stand behind my statements. You're full of *****.
- brufleth, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2I live here, I'm in the housing market, I went to college here, the 1 in 4 people are students figure was from an accurate source, I work here, etc.
- Thayer75, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Actually heystoopid, I would tend to believe brufleth is correct. I was a grad student in Boston and I used my student loan money to buy school supplies including a macbook pro. During the academic school year the city is swamped with an influx of students which isn't surprising given the fact that the city a ridiculous number of colleges, including Harvard, Tufts, MIT, Boston College, BU, Berklee, Northeastern, Wentworth, Simmons... (sorry if I omitted someone's alma mater, for the full list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colleges_and_ ... Given that most colleges require or strongly suggest that students have a computer, there's a huge consumer market. Not only that, but college students also buy apple items such as ipods.
Are there people of lower financial means who can't afford or can't justify buying expensive tech products? Of course there are. Like any metropolitan area there is a population of illegals, poor immigrants, people on government support, and the homeless. But that isn't the point of brufleth's post. It's an apple tech submission not a commentary on the social problems in Boston. Way to hijack and add your own random social and political rant.
- heystoopid, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3Actually in Boston like every other big US City hidden behind the thin veneer of the upper crust rich suburbs lay a number of ghetto's of varying ethnic minorities including illegal immigrants who have fled countries where the US Government has officially backed repressive Military regimes for a new and better life in the land of the gringo's responsible for their repression in the first place what an interesting conundrum !
