- pyrates, on 11/02/2008, -6/+66Buried because you didn't link to the *****'n article but just to the front page.
- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -2/+45URL to join the beta (for us netflix users):
http://www.netflix.com/silverlightoptin
*works in firefox now too
**quality with silverlight is excellent! - inactive, on 11/02/2008, -2/+40http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/02/netflix-opens-w ...
sorry about that - inactive, on 11/03/2008, -0/+17Damn, now I have Netflix in my everything (360 too!)
Well played Netflix, well played... - targetpro, on 11/02/2008, -2/+17yay! get popcorn... also: about time Netflix!
- ulmedas, on 11/03/2008, -1/+13Unless you want to watch *instantly*
AssH*oles on TPB always throttle their upload speeds. I am always the only person running at anything over 20kb/s. It takes several hours to download.
Watch instantly is very nice, and quality always about the same. No guesswork.
I am just glad I don't have to reboot to windows anymore. - RudeTurnip, on 11/03/2008, -1/+13The solution is available and you've decided not to use it.
- bitweever, on 11/03/2008, -2/+11Most important part of Digg submission: the link.
- mechnoch, on 11/03/2008, -0/+7Not sure what you're talking about. Image quality was fine for me. And the download/install took all of 30 seconds. Maybe your crappy slow internet connection forced Netflix to throttle your image quality?
- judicar, on 11/03/2008, -1/+8Yeah that would make at least 3 other people happy too
- thelastknowngod, on 11/03/2008, -1/+8what about linux? if hulu can do this with flash why cant netflix?
- RSAgent007, on 11/03/2008, -0/+6Looks like Microsoft's technology (SilverLight) just saved OS X users from a lot of frustration.
Wait, what? - shepstl, on 02/11/2009, -0/+6i have both mac and PC, so these two conditions suck:
Some movies are not yet available to watch instantly with the new player
By joining the beta you will no longer be able to watch using the old Netflix movie player that uses Windows Media Player - thedragon4453, on 11/03/2008, -0/+6I just used watched instantly in firefox on the mac. Is it limited to IE on Windows? Silverlight should work in FF just fine, so if it doesn't work thats pretty *****.
PS: Would like some Linux love over here. - roxgod666, on 11/03/2008, -0/+6Don't worry, since nobody actually looks at the article and blindly comment, it will be unnoticeable.
- GinaJuice, on 11/03/2008, -2/+8Sucks that PPC owners get the short end. G5s were sold all the way till the end of '06, and are still powerful machines, and now they can't even use an online movie service.
It doesn't matter who's fault it is, a large chunk of the user base it still getting screwed.
/Mac intel+PPC owner - vishnumrao, on 11/03/2008, -3/+8Hey Netflix, How bout some love for linux now?
- wontstoptalking, on 11/03/2008, -0/+4Link fail.
- mechnoch, on 11/03/2008, -0/+4It actually works pretty well.
- digitalpencil, on 11/03/2008, -0/+4i see this argument a lot.. it always convinces me i'm using the wrong computer
- Beatmiser, on 11/03/2008, -0/+4This means I can finally delete my boot camp partition. This was the only thing I was waiting for. Thank you Netflix!!!
- mrsteveman1, on 11/03/2008, -0/+4If he does you will be able to watch it instantly
- redwallhp, on 11/03/2008, -0/+4Now where's IE7 for the Mac? I hate having to use workarounds...aka Windows...to test web pages in IE. It's a real pain. Microsoft, either release IE7 for the Mac or, better yet, make your freakin' web browser render pages properly! Mozilla does it right, Apple does it right, Opera does it right, everyone but you has a browser that works properly!
- wcbb, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3your mom's motto...
- RobotBuddha, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3Anyone tried this in linux with moonlight? Planning on giving it a shot later on if nobody else has. Haven't spoofed a user agent in ages.
- providmike2, on 11/03/2008, -1/+4Btw it also works with FireFox now
- tbenathan, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3OHMYGODimsohappyicantevenusepunctuation
- mpmpmp, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3You have to sign up for the beta.
Link is on third comment from the top.
Video quality looks pretty good, but there is a horrible audio lag (different times for different movies) that ruins the experience. - questro, on 11/03/2008, -5/+8Sad to see that Netflix has chosen Silverlight. This leaves many GNU/Linux users out of the game. I refuse to install Silverlight on my Windows machines and I will not install "Moonlight" on my GNU/Linux systems.
I enjoy Netflix, but will continue to use the old fashioned method....mail/media..until an option is available for my GNU/Linux Ubuntu system! - cadmiumpaint, on 11/03/2008, -1/+4you're assuming it works glitch free....
- palehorse864, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2I didn't, but i've got you covered anyway.

(Go to the previous pages for the best stuff) - Renton, on 11/03/2008, -2/+4Next stop: Linux.
- autonomic, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2and then i did a handstand.
- Ianki, on 11/03/2008, -1/+3one day we'll get firefox support, and i can stop living a dual browser life.
- LastDitchHero, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2But Mono, Novell, Microsoft and Silverlight is EVIL, KILLED MY DOG, and RAPES BABIES!
/sarcasm
In all seriousness they say they won't. Just like all these guys who said "I'll never use evil proprietary flash" yet what did I used to see in the forums, posts about getting flash working with compiz with full screen on sites like Hulu and Youtube. Guess what? I have moonlight and like it. Only problem is some websites deny you based on user agent but a quick work around using user agent switcher. Hopefully they make it work using Moonlight soon. - kangy3213, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2i wish i could use it on my xp media center 2004, can i now, it uses silverlight right?
- fakeplasticsnow, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2so after a year of no watch instantly service for me, I will now have it on both my mac and 360. Well played netflix, well played
- RudeTurnip, on 11/03/2008, -1/+3I would be a happy camper if this functionality somehow found its way into AppleTV.
- meghalc, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2Netflix is gonna be big by the end of this year. First Windows PC, now Mac, and soon Xbox 360!
- cadmiumpaint, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2this could be cool...i don't know how often i'd use it. Part of the reason i use netflix is because i like watching movies on my big tv
- ametitul, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2link fail
- redwallhp, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2Do what I did with my WinXP machine. Run an S-Video out from your computer (assuming your video card has one) to the input on your TV. Put it on channel 3 and voila, Netflix on your TV. You'll just have to listen to the sound via your computer speakers, or get some cable and adapters for that and pipe it into your TV as well...
- tbenathan, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2I'm already watching Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
- cj485, on 11/03/2008, -1/+2about time.
- redwallhp, on 11/03/2008, -1/+2DRM. They use a Windows Media DRM on the videos, and therefore nothing but a Microsoft technology is going to play it properly. I think the reason it's done this way is because otherwise you could *technically* copy a movie using some hack otherwise (which had been done before). Am I right?
- redwallhp, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1I love Instant Play. It's awesome. But it still lacks titles... Why can't the movie industry get off their high horses and let them put more stuff in Instant Play? Not only is there not a great selection, but some of the TV series have episodes missing in Instant Play. Quantum Leap is one example. Great show, it's available on DVD, and some of the seasons are on instant play. Tried to watch season five, and there are some episodes that are only available on the disk...and the discs that I need aren't available (been waiting several months). WTF?
- BrianClio, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1Unless you have a pre-Intel mac?
- ulmedas, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Nah, no matter where I am at.
Granted, sometimes it's fine, but not often. - cadmiumpaint, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1the quality can't be very good. I tried that with Hulu...looks like poop.
i've actually done the reverse...if i have to watch a tv show on hulu (if i forget to DVR a show) i can watch it full screen on my laptop and run the sound out of my headphone jack to my home theatre receiver. Its not perfect but it gives me stereo sound through much better speakers than are on my laptop. -
