- mucko, on 01/11/2008, -5/+21What a lame article. Pick a winner at least! (Though it seems obvious NNW is best.)
- haentz, on 01/11/2008, -0/+16What a useless "article"...
- bawpcwpn, on 01/11/2008, -0/+14Both of these kick NewsFire's slow ass.
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -2/+14I just use Mail in Leopard.
- MattJF317, on 01/11/2008, -0/+11Pretty dumb article.
Basically all it says is that NetNewsWire is faster, Vienna can update more frequently, both are good. - joejoesick, on 01/11/2008, -0/+7They are both now free...genius...
- Firehed, on 01/11/2008, -0/+6Google Reader tbh. While I prefer having the local install, the fact that I won't have it installed on every computer I'll ever use and that even if I did my feeds wouldn't be synced up really kills it for me. With Google Reader, as long as I've got an internet connection, I've got all of my feeds with all of the read/unread/favorite statuses. I've tried several local tools and found them all to be pretty decent, but the global availability (including it being cross-platform) really makes GR the winner for me.
- austinnowlin, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5I just accessed this article via Google Reader, which I love and use daily.
- portilaj, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5Actually you can sync all your feeds accross multiple computers automatically via NewsGator when you use NetNewsWire, It's simple, free, built into the app, they don't need any personal info, and it's got an online-login for when you're using someone else's computer but still want all your feeds.
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -6/+10Remember Vienna is open source.
- mxmbulat, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4actually, the article sucks... just a quick look at both apps and that's it.
- RedS0x, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3It almost completely lacks customization. You can't even reorder the feeds in a group.
- bradspry, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4NetNewsWire downloaded 1464 articles in 17.5 seconds. Wow.
- VTJustinB, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4Hurray for straddling the fence!
Just once I'd like to have a software comparison that wasn't afraid of either side's following throwing a hissy if their product didn't get picked as top. The whole "some people like x, some people like y--which is best? Whatever works for you!!!" review makes me want to punt kittens. - ogmak, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Ditto. I've used both before, but have switch to Mail. I like integration, and Mail does that.
- katsanes, on 01/30/2008, -1/+3I agree! I dugg you up even though others have dugg you down...
- gaoshan, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2You are certainly right about a lot of people not liking Watanabe. The guy is a real tool. Good example, his Inquisitor application is so useful yet it turns out he uses it to push referall revenue his way. If he just stated that his app would sometimes skew search results to allow him some revenue, no problem. He, however, makes no mention of this fact. Also he took open source P2P code, repackaged it and the started making you pay for it (Acquisition), his apps have always phoned home quietly and secretly and he hides this fact. Using a pirated serial on Acquisition (yeah I know but he's charging for an app that people use to... pirate stuff) will result in the app being terminated remotely. You block it from communicating with his server (hard to do now as he hides the address better than he used to) and the app will terminate on your desktop. Heck, even his "free" apps will phone home with god knows what information regularly. Call him out on it, or even just ask for support, and you risk running into his infamous "Are you stupid?" attitude. Charming individual that guy.
Beautiful design, useful apps, shady developer. - machine117, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2Mail doesn't have a built in browser. If you don't mind launching a web browser for every article you want to read further, go ahead, but I prefer to open up the article's links right within vienna.
- SickBoy, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2So you'll get a ton of articles in less than 20 seconds with NNW but you have to wait a half hour before you can refresh them? Kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it?
- VTJustinB, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2That's really why I use NNW. I have newsgator.com for when I'm somewhere random, FeedDemon when I'm at the office woking on PCs, NetNewsWire when I'm on my Macs, and the newsgator.com mobile interface for iPhone. It's great to have that syncronization between all of them, especially how quickly feeds can pile up.
- maubrowncow, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2What makes you think you have to wait half an hour to refresh feeds? There's that big-o "Refresh All" button on the NNW toolbar. BTW, If anybody needs to automatically refresh feeds more often then every half hour, one should probably consider re-examining their feed reading habits.
- MonkeyFarts, on 01/11/2008, -1/+2I used to use Vienna on Tiger and it was a pretty decent solution, albeit sometimes slow and buggy. When Leopard came around I switched to using Mail for the all-in-one convenience of it. But NetNewsWire is starting to grow on me now because of its inline browser (I really don't like launching a new browser window each time I click on an article link), its speed, and its more advanced functionality over Mail. Either way, shareware gone freeware is never a bad thing! The more choices the better, I say.
- windmillninja, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1for the win
- austinnowlin, on 01/11/2008, -3/+4That is the VERY FIRST time I've EVER seen someone access an Apple article on Digg to bash the Mac. You're SO ***** WITTY!!!
- dbr_onix, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1The two applications are far too similar to say one is "better" than the other.
- codazzo, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1google reader + reader notifier ( http://troelsbay.eu/software/reader ).
For The World. - AvidPreatorian, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1don't you have a virus to quarantine or something?
- soleus333, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1I tried Vienna for a time, but the one I settled on is Shrook. But, funnily enough, the site isn't up at the moment for you all to check out. Do check it out when it is working, it's a free app, with the ability to sync with an online version, that part is free for a month, then something cheap, monthly. I have my laptop wherever I need my info, so I didn't do it, but desktop people might find that handy.
- dbr_onix, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1I don't see how an RSS readers "speed" is going to effect the speed it downloads articles.
Much more likely is Vienna was run first, stuff was cached (DNS lookups possibly), which made NetNewsWire faster.. Besides, I'd say that as a "pro" is kind of clutching at straws..
Polling RSS feeds every 5 minutes isn't really a great idea either - the reason NetNewsWire is set to 30 minutes is so it doesn't kill poor web-servers with thousands of people requesting the same feed constantly.. - akatsuki, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1If only reader had an offline Java client.
- DagMX, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1so?
There are advantages to both open source and closed source programs. - uppedbyhiggins, on 01/11/2008, -1/+1Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to start using this...Mail.app is awesome!
- jpincheira, on 01/12/2008, -0/+0Newsfire, although Watanabe is an ***** (which obviously is the only 'contra' in using that app, it's an awesome great created app).
- NextOfKin, on 01/12/2008, -0/+0It seems strange to see anyone say NNW is faster. On my machine NNW has a noticeable half-second lag each time I arrow down to the next headline. Vienna is almost instantaneous. NNW takes longer to update new articles as well. I like them both, but I'm using NNW only because of the syncing ability.
- cajal, on 01/11/2008, -1/+0I have them auto-sort based on which has the most feeds. I find that significantly reduces scrolling.

This is a new news reader on the block. All news in single page! And no Ads! - MBX1, on 01/11/2008, -4/+2I know a lot of people don't like david watanabe but i really like his newsfire rss app and it's my favorite of all of them.
- cajal, on 01/11/2008, -2/+0I like NewsFire and use it daily.
- proverbs17, on 01/11/2008, -2/+0I'm with you. Google Reader is better. Where ever I have a connection, I have Reader (plus all the other Google Aps)
- mxmbulat, on 01/11/2008, -5/+0I'm using this for a while and find it better than Vienna (I do not like the way it handles non English rss feeds).
- morrislevy, on 01/11/2008, -7/+1Duh! The free one! NetNewsWire all the way! w00t.
- abhorsen666, on 01/11/2008, -14/+0wait, theres software for macs
