- mikek814, on 09/23/2008, -0/+32rock solid and you can always go back. Jailbreaking evolved!
- sungoddess808, on 09/23/2008, -0/+23Finally a list which has bosspref and OpenSSH as jailbreaking reasons.
- robopuppy, on 09/23/2008, -2/+23Some of these are certainly making me reconsider, but I worry about having a crashy phone when I need it. Can people who have jailbroken their iPhones describe the stability? It's not like the iPhone is that stable anyway, so I'm wondering if I should just take the plunge.
- ButlerMonkey, on 09/23/2008, -0/+15I'm surprised that people of Digg would not jailbreak their iPhone/Touch without a second thought - Digg has changed.
I can't stand the default look of the iPod Touch interface so I think Winterboard is enough reason to jailbreak the iPhone/iPod Touch. An example of what I've got going - http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/1944/ipodthemec ...
Various emulators are another good reason - maybe it's just me but I get a kick out of being able to play Super Mario Bros on every device I own. - inactive, on 09/23/2008, -0/+12With the new 2.1 software, the only apps that have crashed on me are the stock apps (safari, etc.)
I've jailbroken my iphone with each software release and haven't had any major issues. - inactive, on 09/23/2008, -0/+11err the worse that could happen is that you have to do a restore from your back up and sync up your file again. jailbreaking doesn't harm th phone/touch one bit.
- prisoner24601, on 09/23/2008, -0/+9I'm just waiting to see Android before I decide if it's worth the cost to get an iPhone. It's very cool, don't get me wrong, but AT&T is so terrified of you and I going Skype-over-WiFi and not using minutes they've got Apple to agree to limitations that just grate on me. Plus even if I jailbroke one and ran Skype, my VoIP calls wouldn't be on the same number as my cell phone number. (Which is why I like T-Mobile's HotSport@Home option.)
T-Mobile seems to be willing to accept "VoIP pricing" is here to stay and AT&T/Verizon/Sprint just think like old "per-minute" phone companies. No matter what hardware they have, they always have dumbed it down and walled it off. (No mp3 ringtones, Vcast instead of supporting common formats/content sources, etc.)
I'm not just hoping to see new apps, but really a disruptive "ecosystem" come into place. They iPhone is a HUGE ecosystem to be sure, and the iPhone hardware is extraordinary, but the overall "mentality" of plans and walled-gardens still feels very "old phone company" to me. - diggymow, on 09/23/2008, -0/+9If anything it's more stable because if there's a problem with the file system you can fix it without a full restore.
- JoeyDeacon, on 09/23/2008, -0/+9Jailbreaking is easy and stable and some of the themes available are very professional and a lot better looking than the default. Why not do it?
- jboitnott, on 09/23/2008, -2/+10I love Intelliscreen, funny but Apple just filed patent for app like that
- Philbert, on 09/23/2008, -0/+7"6. Winterboard: If you want to make your iPhone look hideous, be my guest. If you want to slow down every operation of the system, sure. Next time get a Sidekick."
Sure a wallpaper could make it hideous. If you pick a hideous wallpaper. Personally I chose a nice wallpaper and people complimented me on it. I never saw a single slow down either - brendanryder, on 09/23/2008, -2/+8more like 10 apps, not reasons.
- Jayphen, on 09/23/2008, -0/+6The best reason to jailbreak: the MobileInstallation hack. Google it. You WILL jailbreak.
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -1/+7if you find click 4 times hard then yes it needs a rocket surgeon for supervision while being done.
- joshualamgroup, on 09/23/2008, -0/+6hey, leave the newbie alone.
you weren't geeked at birth.. no one was. - atchon, on 09/23/2008, -1/+6You could always not install everything...
I have had a jailbroken phone since 1.0.2 it has never caused me any problems at all. Just don't be stupid and install a ton of useless *****. - TimmyGUNZ, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5I still don't know why Apple won't at least let you change the background on the main screen. What good is wallpaper on the locked screen?!
- ButlerMonkey, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4I still remember when Jobs was revealing the App Store and it's features and I'm looking at Installer on my jailbroken device thinking I've had that available to me for a year.
- MacParrot, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4You could try getting a job?
- BHSPitMonkey, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4Avoid using apps that perversely change parts of the system, like IntelliScreen. WinterBoard (which lets you graphically theme the OS) is safe. Be discerning about what you install and you'll be good to go.
- cutiewithbooty, on 09/23/2008, -3/+6iphones have pretty buttons.
- Meep3D, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4It's not.
- gandhii, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3I know nothing about the iPhone, but I have an interestingly related story. My HTC Hermes phone which came with Windows Mobile 5 included a promised free update to WM6 when it was ready. AT&T took many months after WM6's official release to finally deliver their official update. WM5 on that phone was horribly flaky and crashed all the time. I'd have to reboot twice a day at least. AT&T's official update to WM6 only helped a little. At this point I decided it was time to try the hacked WM6 OS ROMs that are out there. Suddenly my phone was ultra stable. Now I hardly ever have the OS crash. Only time I reboot, is when I need to change the battery.
Just recounting this story to say that it appears that professional programmers (or their managers), more often than not, are just trying to get things out the door and could care less about the quality of their work. It is pretty sad when a hacker who has to reverse engineer everything can do a better job in their spare time. - Twinnie, on 09/23/2008, -3/+6I was planning on jailbreaking my iPhone but if these are the best reasons to do it then I don't think I'll bother. The only one I want is the video recorder and it's not worth voiding my warranty for some tacky ad-supported software.
- Jayphen, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3What's that app that displays the weather on the wallpaper?
- ZachJack, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3I do. That boring black screen, it's nice to add some colour.
- amsoell, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3Isn't that a bit like saying that there's nothing your tricycle can't do that my ten-speed can?
- Philbert, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3I just don't know what it says.
- AnAfricanOnline, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3of late i was thinking it had 1!!
- amsoell, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3Sounds like you're thinking of the free MobileTerminal, and not OpenSSH.
But on that note, there is tab completion. And scrolling. And an extensive, customizable shortcut menu.
Have you even tried it yet? - Webjunkie, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2So you restore it before taking it back, no biggy. I had to do this twice. Yeah, I'm on my 3rd phone in a year. :(
- digjam, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2YOU NEED ONLY ONE REASON
ITS SO DAMN EASY THAT YOU CAN DO IT IN 3 MINS AND IT DOESNT VOID YOUR WARRANTY. - diggymow, on 09/23/2008, -1/+3Me.
- lochness, on 09/23/2008, -9/+11You worry about a "crashy" phone... as opposed to the one that Apple supplies OOTB ?
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -0/+211. SpoofApp 3G
- robopuppy, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Thanks for the response (the number of Diggs backs your claim up), I'm gonna go for it!
- chall5, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Jailbroken = stable
If Apple introduced a native Intelliscreen app - basically something that shows me my upcoming Calendar events on the unlock screen I wouldn't need to jailbreak
Boss Prefs is a nice-to-have to hide the useless (to me) Stocks app but I could live without it - Narfmaster, on 09/23/2008, -1/+3I often find Apps I've installed via Cydia run faster. What's up with that?
I modded the crap out of mine before and it ran perfectly. I'd go for it. - quii, on 09/23/2008, -2/+4Funnily enough the only one really worth using and you have to pay for it.
No thanks. - orph3us, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2you obviously haven't used the terminal programs on the iphone. The new terminal on 2.0 software sucks, but the old one for 1.1.4 (vterminal) was awesome, you could scroll, use tab complete and issue control commands by using a circular control that came up when you tapped on the screen.
Touchterm on the app store looks pretty good, but it doesn't have terminal emulation so it can't display commands like top (took that from a review of it, I don't have it) For me, I would mainly jailbreak for Cycorder, the terminal, ssh into and out of the iphone, and any future apps that apple might not like.. - EdwardsNH, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2In this case, ...is so terrified of you and me...
Just take out the "you" and see if it still sounds right.
BTW, totally agree with your points. I'm over the top frustrated with the way Verizon locks up their phones, so I'm switching to T-Mobile next month. - thewildvinci, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2without a doubt my jb'n itouch is the coolest, most stable, most handy thing ever.
if you use the calendar, coupled w/ intelliscreen [which, in my opinion, is very stable, evern teh cracked versions] your itouch/phone becomes the #1 time management tool
along with winterboard, which i use constantly because i like to make it obvious to everyone that my touch isn't like everyone else's you have yourself the coolest peice of hardware ever. - tracydanger, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2I'm hoping apple keeps making improvements & taking cues from things like this to make the phone better as is (not jailbroken) - categories sure would save some time or at least make the little dots at the bottom a little farther apart & able to press any one dot to go straight to that page.
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2no jailbreaking for me. jailbroke my iphone, installed a couple of apps that seemed useful: (categories, status icons, intelliscreen), and my iPhone became far more unstable than any device i have ever used (and that includes early AppStore app crashes). when i un-jailbroke it, all of the Apps that I placed into Categories no longer displayed and I had to rejailbreak, turn their visibility back on, backup my iphone to itunes, then unjailbreak again.
complete waste of my time for zero benefit - mrBitch, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2confirmed, you can "un-jailbreak" your iPhone or Touch back to standard factory settings by just restoring the firmware via iTunes.
- yourbrokenoven, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2nothing on this list seems worth my time. sorry. fail.
- Ziggy7273, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Some people are just lazy.. and stupid and scared.
- Goya, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Give me a voip and ill jailbreak in a heartbeat.
- r3zonance, on 09/23/2008, -1/+2I agree, the tethering app is about the only reason, and I'm still not that fussed.
Most of the iphone owning population (i.e. not geeks/nerds) couldn't care in the slightest about any of this stuff anyway (well, maybe the video). - sgvprelude, on 09/23/2008, -1/+2You only need one reason...Free porn.

What is Digg?
