- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31NeXT was sweet. The true predecessor to OS X. Too bad it never gained widespread adoption. Apple's Acquisition of NeXT and Jobs was probably the best thing to happen to both companies.
- perre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14...like running an antique version of os x
- judgeFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Nostalgia.
J - neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I thought I was a dweeb for running nextstep on qemu on my g5...
- judgeFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Many users of Mac OS X will find NeXT really familiar. Here's a clip of Jobs demoing NeXTSTEP way back then, in 1991 - that's 4 years before Windows 95 appeared. Awesome stuff and it's only kept getting better.
Must see:

J - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Look at the color picker in the bottom left screenshot. Look familiar?
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I loved the NeXT Computer. Back in my school days, I used to love to work on the NeXT PC at Florida State Univ.
No one really wanted to work on them and I was happy to work on it.
We had a black and white one.
Eventually, when I started using Linux I used Afterstep as my window manager as it resembled NeXT.
Ah ! Those sweet old days.... - barthosch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh my.. yes! You are right. It has the same colors as Mac OS X has!
- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5sure it has; back up your criticism with something, will ya? I'm curious.. I've used the windowmanager in linux (the one that looks like that, acts like it, whatever) and I think the osx interface is nicer - but thats just an issue of different ways of working i suppose.. and no, I don't care about the gumdrops much. they are tasty though ..
- jeffburg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5now if he could get it to run with boot camp... then i would be impressed
- timta2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Shiptoshore-You should really think about what you say before you open your mouth and let every Digg user know that you are an idiot.
- uncleFester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4... when will someone try BeOS? THAT could be cool.. an mac-alternate os, originally on ppc, ported to intel... :)
- cmfrolick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I had heard a number of times that the original Video Toaster used by macs to produce stunning 3D and video was actually a re-boxed Amiga, designed as a slave, the real work was done by the Amiga hardware. I never met anyone that owned an Amiga that didn't still use it at least 5 years after they they quit making them, and they all talked about how much better it was than their brand new PC. Truly a box way too far ahead of it's time.
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Watching too much CSI?
CSI: Digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I would kill to be able to play with NeXTSTEP. Are OpenStep 4.2 CDs still available somewhere?
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There was a NeXT machine in the computer lab at the University of South Carolina when I was there in the late '80s. It always sat unused, though. I should have messed with it when I had the chance. My platform of choice at the time was the Amiga, though. Another Amiga enthusiast and I put on an Amiga demonstration for the computer lab once. Blew the guy that ran the lab's mind. :)

http://www.blakespot.com/list/images/ns6.jpg - ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love WindowMaker and OpenStep. One of my favorite thing is the way they handle tasks in the Dock. But the Open/GnuStep widgets are so damn ugly.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3DOS was a POS. NEXTSTEP was great. You, my friend, are an idiot.
- bundaegi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Windowmaker is written using the WINGs toolkit rather than GNUStep. There's a rewrite of Windowmaker using GNUStep, though. It's called Etoile: http://www.etoile-project.org/
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Isn't it amazing how advanced NeXTStep was?
- waynechng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Used to be NeXTStep 3.3 tools developer so these screenshots really brought me back. It really was a kick-ass OS and still my favorite after all these years.
- DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That fellow has some nice toys -- NeXT work station and a Lisa. Would love to play with those.
- captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Be careful with versions of NeXTstep prior to OpenStep (anything less than 4, I think). If memory serves, you'll need a Y2K patch. (Or you can just set the date to something before 2000.)
- blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WindowMaker is simply the window manager used by the GNUStep project.
http://www.gnustep.org/ - nkassi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's quite nice to see how far Apple took this gui design.
Window Maker is quite nice but I got to admit I need a little more than it offers. I use GNOME cause I'm lazy.
Nic - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2neozeed - did you ever work at Razorfish? Your homepage design makes me ask...
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4oh man, this is really getting to the Apple nerd in me.
the gui makes me think of what Plan9 looks like now. - blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3finnif,
That is odd - I hadn't noticed it. I would say it is due to the mouse/focus being out of the Parallels window for a few mins before the shot (you can see I'm rolling over the OS X dock in the shot) - but ops continute in the Parallels window even when you detach the mouse. It's not a Photoshop job though, I assure you.
Go install it on an Intel Mac - you'll see it can be done. Actually - go attempt to install NEXTSTEP on an Intel Mac. I'd like to see if that can easily be done...and doubt I'll have the time or energy for that anytime soon. - monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's like the Son meets his father for the very first time ..... so beautiful....
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They changed the capatalization serveral times.. nextSTEP NeXTSTEP NEXTSTEP OPENSTEP... It depended on what major release it was, but I recall OPENSTEP being allcaps....
LOUD eh?
But I guess if you want to change the world, you gotta scream. - blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And Father stands on Son's back, or some such. That's actually a disturbing image.
- blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those interested, a complete NeXT hardware system can be had for pretty little $$.
Back in 2000 I paid $250 for a refurbished NeXTstation Turbo Color (33MHz 68040) w/ 21" color screen and NEXTSTEP 3.3 installed on a 512MB disk. Got it at a refurb house in Frederick, MD. I've since upgraded it to 128MB RAM and a 2GB disk. It's a nice machine. You can see a pic of it in the last photo of the originally linked article.
More pics of it from a while back:

( there're six pictures ns1 ... ns6 FYI ) - simX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3finnif: The discrepancy in times doesn't necessarily mean that it's a fake. The same thing happens when you install Boot Camp on Windows -- the times get out of sync between the two operating systems, due to differences between them. Here's a quote from an Apple online support article ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303572#faq1 ):
"Why is the time different between Mac OS X and Windows XP on my computer?
The Windows XP and Mac OS X operating systems handle your computer's date and time information differently, so the date and time may be different when you switch operating systems. For best results, use a network time server and resync the date and time whenever you switch operating systems. In Mac OS X, use the 'Set date & time automatically' option in the Date & Time preferences. In Windows XP, click the Update Now button in the 'Date and Time Properties' control panel." - wintermute1974, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, look at this picture from the article:
http://www.maconintel.com/OpenStep_on_MacBookPro/OpenStep_boot_msgs.jpg
Do you see the last line on the screen? It reads:
"[W]ARNING: preposterous time in Real Time Clock -- CHECK AND RESET THE DATE!"
This is interesting: Is the RTC getting today's date (as of 2006)? If so, does NeXT assume that it couldn't possibly be useful as of 2006? - neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its a BSD thing.
kern_time.c
/*
* If the RTC does not have acceptable value, i.e. time before
* the UNIX epoch, set it to the UNIX epoch
*/
if (time.tv_sec < 0) {
printf ("WARNING: preposterous time in Real Time Clock");
time.tv_sec = 0; /* the UNIX epoch */
time.tv_usec = 0;
setthetime(&time);
boottime = time;
printf(" -- CHECK AND RESET THE DATE!n"); - wintermute1974, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The same warning (with the W) appears later in the list of images.
- onefish2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Been there done that, Had OpenStep 4.2 running on VMware Workstation YEARS ago. Nice to see it running on Mac OSX though. Now you can go back and forth to see the roots of the OS.
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@felchmonkey neozeed - did you ever work at Razorfish? Your homepage design makes me ask.
Actually its frontpage 97 If I remember.. I think I spent 10 minutes thowing it together.. Which just shows you why razorfish was a ticking timebomb. - shadedream, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I used to have a NeXT Cube... been king myself the past few years for selling it. I love tinkering with old computers too much...
Hell I'd dual boot or VMware it on my macbook pro (if I had one T_T) - nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My Name says it all
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Add doom 1 with working sound, and you may have a story.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Erm, kinda paranoid there.. The virutal PCs clock can be set to different times.. Not every [something] running on a [something] has been faked..
- Ben - galisus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4GNUStep != WindowMaker
GNUStep is an open source version of the NeXT framework which is the base of OS X.. notice how most Cocoa functions are prefixed with NS? NeXT Step.. - catmistake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not a huge deal, but I believe you got the capitalization wrong... I think it was ultimately OPENSTEP (not OpenStep) prior to Rhapsody. If I'm not mistaken, OpenStep is some kind of library or something. Can anyone confirm?
- tnvwboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Never used NeXT but this is pretty cool.
- alobos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with him. Nextstep has a way more advanced method of handling user interaction with it. The thing is that all those impressive UI elements wouldn't be understanded by OS 9 and (less by) windows users, so hey had to regress it a lot to make it "compatible" with users' way of doing things in the other machines.
I loved the way NextStep handled menus. A lot more intelligent than the way windows or OS 9 does. And what about keeping the scrollbar at the left? Clever! There's somewhere in the net a site that tells the story of the UI elements of NextStep. It's backed by a lot of scientific research! - fogelbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The most amazing thing about Amiga is that you could do something substantial and fast without a hard drive. I had one with two floppy drives and still was able to get real work done. Try that on a PC of the day without pulling your hair out. The entire operating system fit on one floppy, and was still better than anything out at the time.
