- hyaena, on 11/26/2007, -2/+36isn't "native emulation" an oxymoron? this is, however, very cool
- totorototoro, on 11/26/2007, -3/+27Get Grim Fandango on there and I'll open my wallet.
- lordsandwich, on 11/26/2007, -0/+21Grim Fandango doesn't run on the SCUMM engine.
- cjschmidt, on 11/26/2007, -0/+18I don't understand how LucasArts (or whatever they're called now) can see SCUMMvm getting ported to a new cell phone and toaster every week and not think "Maybe WE should be doing this...". They're already made! Clean them up and sell them on Live, WiiWare, DS, whatever! Sigh...
- Spamcan, on 11/26/2007, -2/+19Sam & Max running on the iPhone, best news I've heard all week.
- Po0py, on 11/26/2007, -9/+24*cough Nintendo DS *cough
- luchid, on 11/26/2007, -0/+13On "iphone terms" native is the name assigned to apps you install on the phone, as opposed to webapps.
- quaxon, on 11/26/2007, -0/+11What do you guys have against jailbreaking your iphone? its super easy to do (especially in 1.1.1) and it's easily the best part of an iphone. Without jailbreaking, my iphone would suck, the third party apps are pretty much what make it such a great device. If you dont unlock it and just jailbreak your iphone will be safe and you dont have to worry about bricking it, so why are people against jailbreaking it?
- mccarron, on 11/26/2007, -0/+10Day of the Tentacle is supported, #1 on the list even. No Grim though, it runs on GrimE not SCUMM which is what this emulator emulates.
- quoquo, on 11/26/2007, -0/+8monkey island 3 (aka the curse of monkey island) runs on scummvm.
check out the compatibility list for all titles that run on it:
http://www.scummvm.org/compatibility.php - retrovertigo, on 11/26/2007, -1/+8MI3 is good, but it is FAR from being the best of the series. The Secret of Monkey Island (Game 1) had a great sense of humor and was completely different than any other point-and-click game on the market, especially Sierra's adventure games. Not to mention MI2 was just an overall awesome experience. Have you even played the first two games? If you really are only 24, then I think you may have missed out on two of the best games during golden age of adventure gaming.
- braddial, on 11/26/2007, -0/+7If you've used or seen an iphone, you should know that you don't see fingerprints when the screen is lit.
- Chewie67, on 11/26/2007, -9/+15When this is available as a real iPhone App (no jailbrake), I'll buy it.
$4.99 sounds right... - Scopitone, on 11/26/2007, -1/+7*****, I always laughed at people jailbreaking their iPhones for that stupid NES mod but this...THIS compels me to break the ***** out of my iPhone.
Or maybe I'll just do it on my DS. - semthex, on 11/26/2007, -3/+8Thats just awesome!
- alittleroy101, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5It's awesome on the DS. The only problem is that they've not implemented support for RAM expansion, which prevents some of the later Lucas Arts games from running since the DS is so limited memory wise.
- codyman, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6I think I have a mac cd-rom of indiana jones "atlantis", sam and max, and day of the tentacle around here somewhere back from my old 68040 quadra 610 days....
- bigsteve, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5Awesome, and if you have one, I hope it suits all of your needs. Thanks for the update.
The iPhone suits mine. - bigsteve, on 11/26/2007, -3/+8You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Your wit in rhyming Apple with Crapple, your well-supported arguments, your boasting about owning products you find superior... Bravo. Thanks for making digg the shining star in the black canopy that it is.
- jhunt, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Why would you NOT jailbreak your iPod touch? There are no disadvantages to doing so, and it's ridiculously easy. ScummVM is awesome, but there are tons of other 3rd party apps that are just fantastic, and warrant the jailbreaking on their own.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5The Dig, anyone?
- Chrysaor, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4You can use iPhone virtual keyboard with ScummVM, it is available on the portrait mode.
I have Indy: Fate of Atlantis, Full Throttle and Day of Tentacle on my iPhone, they all play great, way better than expected. - bigsteve, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Haha right now, it's a hack all around. Very much looking forward to documented APIs come the (supposed) Feb. Apple-brand SDK.
- postalblowfish7, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4now port hypercard so i can play through myst with my fingertips ;)
- louiedog, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Most of these games are under 100 MB with speech. Hell, you can even compress the audio even more if you want because ScummVM allows it. The ones without speech are ridiculously small, the size of a handful of songs.
- CLShortFuse, on 11/26/2007, -1/+5This article sparked the interest to put it on my AT&T Tilt (HTC Kaiser). Did a quick search and they (ScummVM devs) have had a PocketPC version available for a long time now. I'm installing it now.
I don't know it being "absolutely perfect" on the iPhone, some games (some parts of Loom if i remember correctly) require a keyboard and there's no virtual keyboard in ScummVM. I don't know how precise it'll be using your fingers instead of a stylus. I remember some games were really picky where you clicked but that's probably not an alarming issue.
Oh, and btw, I haven't been able to comment on digg from Opera or IE7 on my WinXP, Vista32 and Vista64 machines for the past week or two. (I haven't tried Safari on my mac yet). Why do I now have to install Firefox on all the machines I want to comment on Digg with? - JoshCBFL, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4The SCUMM engine is proprietary to LucasArts, yes. But, ScummVM has been programmed to run more than one Sierra adventure game.
- CLShortFuse, on 11/26/2007, -1/+4Ah, sounds sweet. Must be a PocketPC "issue" but since my phone has a physical QWERTY keyboard, it's not a problem for me.

What a hassle. When is Digg going to be coded without cheap Firefox hacks? Isn't that why people hated Internet Explorer so much, the hacks? Use a Web 2.0 fully-compliant browser like Opera or Safari for testing. - bigsteve, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3There's a lot of FUD and misinformation out there making people wary, be patient. You do speak the truth, though.
- sjheil, on 11/26/2007, -1/+4Pardon the confusion here, but to all you folks saying things like 'this is not enough to get me to jailbreak my iphone'...what exactly is the hangup with jailbreaking your iphone anyways? There are plenty of nifty apps out there - including a NES and GBA emulator - and it's not a risky proposition to jailbreak in any case. So why wouldn't you do it?
(Note that I'm not referring to 'unlocking', which, of course is a tad bit risky and not something to do if you don't need to do it.) - psg188, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3Very cool? Yes.
Absolutely Perfect? No way. - louiedog, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3Let me guess, you never played any of these games. Monkey Island and Loom came with my 4x CD-ROM waaaaaaaaaaaay back when 4x was cutting edge. I played those games way more than I played any games on my NES or SNES after getting my hands on them.
- DaveXensen, on 11/26/2007, -2/+4Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade FTW
- FredFredrickson, on 11/26/2007, -2/+4"After trying it I can tell you that, if there's a platform designed to play these kind of games, that's the iPhone."
Actually, I'd have to say that it's more likely the platform these games were originally designed for, the regular old computer. - mashw, on 11/26/2007, -3/+5I can't afford one either.
- bigsteve, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Well that'd be my problem with it, battery life and not having to carry a power brick are important. In college, I'd spend 10-14 hours away from home at a run sometimes. A one device situation of phone + music + movies + camera + games would have definitely been my friend then.
- sakuraz, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2*Cough*PocketPC*Cough*
*Cough*PC*Cough*
*Cough*Linux*Cough* - bigsteve, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2There are lots of open-source emulators for the platforms you've listed. Many already ported to the iPhone's arch. So feel free to, you know, pitch in.
- JohnH91, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Look Behind You, Its a Three Headed Monkey!!
- louiedog, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3Oh, and I hope I don't get dugg down for sounding too much like an ad, but here it goes. Gametap is offering the 4th episode of the new Sam & Max episodes for free for a short time. I suggest anyone who enjoys these old adventure games should try it out.
- honeymustardn, on 11/26/2007, -4/+6I'm pretty sure that people weren't thinking yesterday that the only flaw the iPhone was was that it didn't have ScummVM support...
- fabio1, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I just installed Monkey Island 2 and played a bit. The interface is pretty good, and the screen is just perfect! But it is a bit cumbersome to try and click on something with your fingertips, it feels like I´m dragging a gigantic mouse cursor over the screen...
but the implementation is awesome! I´ll definitely will be (re)playing MI2. - bigsteve, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Just woke up? Either you don't live in North America, or you're a consultant ;)
- alexkorova, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I've been (re)playing these games on my DS, and it works great, this is probably even better. Don't have an iPhone and will probably not buy one though.
- mrgreen4242, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I had hoped that porting ScummVM to the DS would lead to a resurgence in the genre, but it really hasn't. There's been a few point and click adventure type games, but nothing significant.
I think that the real problem is that the DS has so many great games that homebrew stull like ScummVM isn't really a priority for a significant number of its users. The iPhone/touch on the the other hand has practically no games and is significantly easier to make work with homebrew/OSS stuff like this (for the user) so maybe it'll see a surge in popularity. If you think about it, this would be a great market opportunity for the Sierra and Lucas Arts. Rerelease these old games for $4.99 direct sales through iTMS (so pretty much all profit) and if they go well, hire a couple of developers to make some new ones.In comparison to some modern games, point and click adventures are pretty primative. 2D bitmap art, not 3D. No surround sound. No multiplayer. Can be a bit shorter and people won't complain. Anyways, here's to hoping adventure gaming makes a comeback! - TomFrost, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1The games you mentioned run on the SCI engine. You should look up the FreeSCI team and show them your support if you'd like more development :)
- TomFrost, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Keep in mind that this port isn't even in full release yet. The port developer has stated he's looking into solutions for this, such as screen zooming or an under-the-finger magnifier similar to what you see when you move the cursor in a text field when writing an SMS or E-mail.
- oxygen911, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Loom and Indy? simply amazing. now I have to buy an iphone....
- mlambir, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Well... i don't think it's an issue of ages... i'm 22 and i played 1 and 2 several times. i loved to play MI1 on a friend's home, both of us trying reeeealy hard to solve the puzzles (we must have been 10 or so), MI1 and MI2 were 2 of the most rewarding games i've ever known
- TomFrost, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1You're half right -- ScummVM can't play SCI games, but they have many AGI games covered ;-). The FreeSCI project is leading that scene, though unfortunately they're not exactly the most active bunch :-/
