- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7it's not features or ability that make the ipod the people's choice... it's marketing, ease of use and simplicity with style... that's it... that's all people ultimately want, a music player
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That size-gap is a clever marketing system Apple uses to make frenge users spend more money, they would never knowingly eliminate it. Though it would be a win for consumers, it would be a loss for Apple, because they would be selling less of the more expensive 30GB device, and at the same time, using more of their Flash ram (which is already in short supply) for the 12/16GB devices, decreasing the overall number of iPods that can be built.
While some things make PERFECT sense in the normal world, they simply don't make good business sense. A 12GB iPod is sadly one of those things (but I wouldn't hold my breath on an 8GB device). - NoozeHound, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I wonder if it will still only have a 12 month life expectancy from Apple.

Love Apple or hate them, that sort of attitude still sucks big time.
Caveat Emptor at any price. - lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The music you put on it doesn't need to be DRMed, it is only DRMed if you buy it from iTunes, not if you rip it off of a CD or something. An iPod can play non-DRMed music just fine.
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The nano has 2 ram slots. New 4 GB nanos ship with one slot empty and one slot containing a 4GB chip.
Slipping a 8GB chip in the empty slot is trivial. The production price difference between a 4GB and a 12GB would be the price of the 8GB chip .. the sales price would probably be somewhat higher. .. The choice between the most expensive nano and the cheapest full iPod would be .. difficult - lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3er, cant we just get a next-gen ipod?
- Bytor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I guess you wont buy an MP# player then, since just about every player includes some kind of DRM these.
12gb would be the bulk of my music, so I would seriouisly look at a 12G nano, but I doubt that will happen soon. - klang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Makes sense .. the competitors are starting to come out with 4GB flash devices so of course Apple have to put some distance. Furthermore .. there is a "size gap" in the iPod product line between the 4GB nano and the 30GB full iPod .. a 12GB device makes all the sense in the world.
- nerdofnerds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or maybe they could make an entirely solid state ipod w/ video and roll out higher capacity HD baes "proper" video ipods... Both with bigger batteries...
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33- 4GB NAND chips, they could fit that on something roughly half the size of a normal piece of chewing gum (utilizing both sides of the piece, that is).
In fact, 16GB (4- 4GB chips) would fit just as easily, but it would be harder to market simply because of expense. However, in a laptop, the expense could easily be eaten by the platform itself. (Though personally, I can't see Apple going that deep right now; using Flash for laptop production might throw off their supply for iPod construction) - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe they don't (which I doubt), but the people buying the things do care. I'd love to carry my 5G iPod without a case, even if it does save my iPod's ass when I drop it.
- cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That little blurb made the front page? Wow.
On a side note, that's good news. I'd happily buy a 12gb Nano if the price was right. - Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Can they really fit 12 GB into an iPod Nano?"
Ill take that as a rhetorical question. - WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really hope they release this before the "Get a Mac, Get a free iPod" deal ends.
- kola_kidd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Does the tin man have a sheetmetal *****?
- awoodhouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I need a new ipod. But 12GB just isn't enough for most people, even as a second device.
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And by some incredible coincidence, at the time the nano was released, a 12Gigs nano would have cost a fortune, much more than a 30Gigs iPod.
The size-gap is not intentional. Apple has to cover all the size range to remain competitive. Apple probably loses many sales to players that are in the 8-20 gigs range. If people look at the iPod line-up, see a big gap and have trouble deciding which one to take, they will be tempted to seek a compromise (10 gigs for example) from a competitor.
If the competition releases 12 Gigs Flash players, Apple will have to follow. But Apple has to take the lead, like they did with the nano: they will offer they only/cheapest/smallest 12 Gigs player.
About the iPod price: the problem is that when debating about it, we only compare the prices between Apple vs. the competition... When a new iPod model is released nowadays, it's at a very competitive price, it's usually hard to find a player with the same capacity that is as small for under the price of the iPod, in the days/weeks/months after an iPod release.
Eventually, as time goes by in the product cycle, competitors match Apple in price, and Apple makes more profit near the end of the product cycle. But that's the same for competitors. If you take a given mp3 player company and compare their prices vs the rest of the market for a few years, you'll see much the same pattern. The company releases new product at a competitive price, then hold on to the price as long as they can so they can make more and more profit as the parts go cheaper. - ph30nix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Once I passed 25gb of music in iTunes, the concept of buying any player with less than that became unlikely.
I can agree that it'd be nice to have 12gb of music in a package as small as the Nano...but I've never been one to complain about gadget sizes, and prefer to have at least one (if not two) complete backups of my music aside from my laptop's hard drive (e.g., external drive and ipod). That and I like having all of my music with me...so that there's never that "I forgot to put such and such on here..." feeling.
For $250 though, I could make a good gift out of a 12gb nano. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Who shops primarily based on capacity? Most people probably fall into one of these groups:
1) I want an iPod.
2) IPODs suck! I'm getting a zen.
3) What does [insert store] have on sale that doesn't look dopey?
Capacity comes second in most people's buying decision, usually influenced by whatever they can afford. - blackmath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great news because then usb thumb drives would come down in price even more. Imagine being able to carry around 8GB on your keychain for $50.
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So I wonder if that means the $200 nano will be 6GB and the $150 3GB. I could see TONS of cheap nanos go if they bump the ones up a decent amount.
- smartydebater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, if you go to Apples Education Store you can get a 30GB VIDEO IPOD for about $250! Why would you pay that much for a 12GB Nano that can't play videos? I'll feel sorry for whoever buys it, I mean they won't by able to watch Diggnation on it!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they might think about putting like a little locator or some kind of beeper on the nano so i can find it with it slips out of my pocket between the seats in my car. 12 gigs sounds great although i'd be happy with 8 even, but they need to think about a software upgrade that lets you like delete songs off playlists and a better equalizer...if you use treble reducer mode to enhance ur bass raise your hand
- smartydebater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would you want a 12GB Nano anyways. You might as well get the 30 GB Video ipod and be able to play movies, and acutally use your ipods harddrive space.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1id rather just have the 30 gig toshiba gigabeat s for almost the same price (from amazon)
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3will their still be no custom EQ? will there still be no drag-and-dropness? Nanos could go to a hundred gb's and i still wouldn't wanna hafta use one.
- gman341, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Question- why doesn't apple just use removable storage on their nanos? I'll buy new apple branded flash media but don't make me buy a whole new ipod just to increase the capacity.. hopefully one day they'll get it.
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I hope you are wrong ;-)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is brilliant news. I have gone threw pretty much every iPod, from the mini, shuffle to the photo and I can honestly say that I found the Nano the best. The size and weight just do it for me. I am close to hitting 60GIG in iTunes so a capacity increase would be more than welcome!
- googlyguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wonder if Vista will support these iPods as plug-in RAM for the system...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1they might think about putting like a little locator or some kind of beeper on the nano so i can find it with it slips out of my pocket between the seats in my car. 12 gigs sounds great although i'd be happy with 8 even, but they need to think about a software upgrade that lets you like delete songs off playlists and a better equalizer...if you use treble reducer mode to enhance ur bass raise your hand
- matt21811, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2err... is $250 the right price?
- Hoffer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have an iPod shuffle and would love to get something new. I'm waiting for the next generation of either the shuffle or nano.
I also have a iPod photo and would replace it with the rumored true video iPod. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Good news, hopefully a nice price (keep it the same or less) and a more durable plastic is used. the Nano is a good product aside from its scratch prone shell.
PS: longofest i was just going to post the same thing untill i saw ur article when it came up as dupe :) beat me to it. - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@smartydebator
Because some of us want to take our iPods to the gym/jogging. Flash ram > hard drive. - D4V1S, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@neocitron
don't forget price! - WeRDevos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I have been patiently waiting to replace my 6GB mini with a higher capacity Nano. 8GB would be great, 12GB even sweeter if it has a minimim effect on battery life.
- andyd2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm in for one if this turns out to be true
- diafel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Can they really fit 12 GB into an iPod Nano?
- xbasilx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3i wouldn't buy an ipod cos of the DRM and it doesn't have a standard battery which i can replace myself.
- f00f, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0why can't they put this sort of storage on a phone? i'm already carrying a phone around, i don't really want to have to carry two devices. phones are warming up to higher megapixel cameras, which if they were better, would be perfect: i'd just have the one device to carry around.
- burr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why is it then, genius, that the iPod mini and iPod nano have been such huge hits with capacities only going up to 6GB?
- splintax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I don't really think they care about how easily it's scratched. It leaves a niche for cases et cetera, and it adds to the "prestige" of the iPod in a way - people take much better care of it because they don't want it scratched..
- Ohwiseone, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0If real cool..I need a new IPOD
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4So how long until creative releases the same thing a few months after the new nano at a slightly lower price point so the apple haters can say, "See, Ipod is teh inferiororz!!"

What is Digg?
